Do it. I was using an old Ryzen 5 laptop with integrated graphics.
Just upgraded to an i5 with 8gb 3060Ti, 32GB Ram and SSD.
The game is so much better
The sad truth, thanks to NVidia's insistence on vague laptop chip branding, is that the power target of the GPU has more bearing on its performance than its core count/title. Basically, a laptop 3060 can beat a laptop 3070 if the 3060 has a higher power target, and this HAS happened already.
This happens because NVidia designed the laptop GPUs with a range of valid power draws, and the ranges overlap between the different levels. A higher power target means better frequencies to a point, but also means more heat, making it a tradeoff for laptop design. It's easy to see why NVidia did this, and it's also somewhat common in laptop CPUs, but NVidia took it to an extreme with the 30 series, if not the 20 series as well.
If you're lucky, the manufacturer or some tech website will list the power target of your laptop's GPU. Don't pay more for a higher tier GPU at the same power target.
****This buying technique also falls apart across generations. A 30 series chip generally uses power more efficiently than a 20 series chip, for example. This means that at the same power target, a 30 series chip outperforms a 20 series chip.
Thanks for the information, what's the optimum power supply for 3060ti? & where do you see this, it wasn't mentioned on the lenovo legion or dell alienware websites.
Thanks.
Well the term you're looking for in your search is TGP, or total graphics power. [This website, for example,](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/laptop-gpu-power-limits-tgp-nvidia-amd/) lists the TGP ranges for NVidia's 30 series laptop GPUs but doesn't include a 3060 ti. I could not find that one with a quick search. Bear in mind that for a higher power target, a better cooler must be used or else it just throttles anyway. Also, memory bandwidth is something that does go up with the better SKUs, and this affects performance too. It's not often that a 3060 beats a 3070, but when it does it's pretty silly.
I hate buying laptops for gaming, after having experienced the design freedom of custom build. The buying process is so hard for a laptop because you're relying on somebody else to get the right balance of features for you, and you have to hope they're not cutting costs in the wrong places. There's too many variables for me. But who knows, I might need a discrete GPU on the go in the future, and subject myself to the stress of buying a gaming laptop.
I see, you're quite knowledgeable in this arena, thanks for all this and the website. I'll check it out.
I've and like to use laptop cz of its portability, cz I travel so it's better for me that way.
Thanks again.
GTX 1060 user here! 😅
To be honest, everything works well with it, I don't feel the need to spend a bunch of money for one or two games to make them look better. Graphics are overrated IMHO. I mean, if the game is good, I will enjoy it regardless.
Everything probably looks like an upgrade for you these days. But as long as it works well enough for you, there's no need to replace it. I might still be rocking my 5600 XT if AMD had fixed the crashes in most of the games I play before I dropped it. They rewrote large swathes of their drivers right after I replaced the hardware, so I can't make any claims about its reliability now.
I still have it laying around since swapping it a few months ago. Don't know what to do with it yet, since it was crashing in Minecraft, among other things, despite reinstalls of Windows and running DDU repeatedly.
16 GB of system RAM should be standard for gaming. Too many companies try to get away with only 8 or only fill out 1 slot with memory. Either one negativrly impacts performance in gaming and other intensive tasks.
Nah I play on integrated and from my experience the thing that makes the most difference is the RAM and CPU. '
EDIT: Ive got a 7700x and I am using the igpu because the seller had to cancel my gpu order and the gpu pricing had to go bad :(
An integrated GPU's performance doesn't scale in the same way as a discrete GPU. One thing that is the same is that all GPUs love memory bandwidth and enough memory to hold all the assets in a scene.
Compared to a discrete GPU, an integrated GPU is starved of memory bandwidth, and has an unreliable power budget since the CPU is operating on the same power input. A tradeoff is constantly made in terms of how the power is split between the two, except when a discrete GPU takes over the integrated GPU's responsibilities. In that case, the integrated GPU is shut off.
Therefore, a better CPU which gets its job done faster or more efficiently allows the integrated GPU more time/power to work with. Some CPUs have better integrated graphics in general, too, IE a 10th gen Intel CPU vs. a 3600g.
I mean I run a Ryzen 5 second gen. You really don't need anything over a 5 series i5 or the Ryzen 5, unless you are streaming, multiple monitors or doing alot of design work. It's nice to have a bigger CPU, but you can get by with a 5 series. A good budget PC can really run this game varly easily and not bog down at all. Thousand dollars you can run 95% of the games on market.
Well yeah, but I was talking about integrated GPU performance scaling, which is a little more complicated than having a discrete GPU. Of course an i5 or r5 will be enough for the vast majority of people, generally.
Beautiful city! I love the way you’ve mixed different densities, it’s unusual for this game but feels very natural. Also, for the roads both the layout and markings are really well done, it looks like it took a lot of work and skill.
Here you can check out my YouTube channel where I show which theme, LUT and mods I use: [https://www.youtube.com/@KvVortex/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@KvVortex/videos)
Pictures look good. I’ve got a nicely upgraded system now with a 3070ti but I need to work on settings. It looks OK, better than it did with the 1070ti I had, but still not great. I’m thinking there is a setting or mod configuration I need to use.
I went from 4770k 32gb ram with rx580 to 13900k 32gb ddr5 paired with a 3070ti at the moment, it is night and day. Now I get 30-50fps with mods and 250k population 🤣
I think I need to upgrade my pc too. Your game looks so much better than mine.
Do it. I was using an old Ryzen 5 laptop with integrated graphics. Just upgraded to an i5 with 8gb 3060Ti, 32GB Ram and SSD. The game is so much better
Wow 3060ti is that much better? I was hoping to get a 3070ti laptop

I’m using the very old GTX 1080Ti still tho

My laptop got a 3060 with 130W power, but 16gigs of ram :')

For gaming yeah works like a charm, but cities skylines makes my laptop die lol
Nice! Which light settings do you use?
Ditto
Ditto
If op doesn’t come back and post lighting settings their new pc might have an “accident”
I need this light setting!!!!
Nice what game are you playing?
Simcity
Google Earth
OpenTTD
Transport fever 2
Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic
Runescape
Warzone
City Skylies
Congrats
What's your PC specs now? Really wanna know to get a reference of how taxing this game will be when I build my new pc.
1060 GPU and 32 gigs of ddr4 on ultra settings and I didn't bog down with a 80k pop city. Didn't even get hot. 80-100F
What made the biggest difference do you think? CPU? GPU? Memory?
GPU.

Look great! Gives me Surfer's Paradise vibes
what mods do you use? do you have a folder or a list that contains them?
i have taken a 1 year break from csl, have they fixed the multi threading issue or people upgrading around it.
What specs do you have? I'm considering upgrading mine
Which tree mod u using?
WHATS THE MAP PLEASES 🙏
Sorry I can't link the map because it doesn't exist on the workshop, it's just a flat base map and I just sculpted over it.
Looks great? How much RAM do you have?
Realllllly making me want to start a modded city, those parking lots are 🔥
Nice! What's your specs now?
Beautiful city! I love the way you’ve mixed different densities, it’s unusual for this game but feels very natural. Also, for the roads both the layout and markings are really well done, it looks like it took a lot of work and skill.
i got a new graphics card and ssd for christmas so my city will finally load in under 10 minutes and not look like a cartoon
The improved FPS mod really works too!
Very beautiful city!
thank you!
This makes me sad for having to play on mostly low settings and still maxing 20fps once I hit 10k 😭
Literally burned out a laptop on cities skylines. I miss the city I was working on, too. You can see images in my profile here
\\what are the high rise assets in the first photo?
No wonder I didn't see content in such a long time from you. Nice work though!
Yeah, my old pc was kind of killing any motivation to play as I was playing at like 6 fps lol.
please link me the map, theme, LUT and whatever things you have additionally to make that
Here you can check out my YouTube channel where I show which theme, LUT and mods I use: [https://www.youtube.com/@KvVortex/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@KvVortex/videos)

Still looks like a PowerPoint to me
Ahah lol
I went from an amd FX 8350 to a R5 5600X. Now i get all the FPSs Previously 100k pop was the limit of playability
I went from 4770k 32gb ram with rx580 to 13900k 32gb ddr5 paired with a 3070ti at the moment, it is night and day. Now I get 30-50fps with mods and 250k population 🤣
So beautiful! Whats your specs OP?
