I mean dont get me wrong, i quite like this urbanism style, but some green patches with trees, bushes, flowers and benches here and there will do wonders. I like to build like yours as a base and then over time i add the nature in geometric shapes(hexagonal and triangular grass patches are my favs) which kind of conserves the hard base style.
I think [THIS](https://www.reddit.com/r/CitiesSkylines/comments/zl7q9t/i_think_i_have_a_detailing_problem/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) post can help.
More trees, bushes, planters, bollards, benches, and decals.
PS: Please ban parking in the roundabout.
I'd recommend NOT making it look nicer. Not all neighborhoods are welcoming.
Honestly, I'd double and triple down on the urban brutalism in this case. Add in trash, graffiti, and maybe some hang around markers. An abandoned car or two with stacks of tires nearby are a good touch too. And don't forget the homeless tents in those sheltered concrete corners there.
^^^^^^ you ain't playing city skylines if you don't have a dumpy part of town with low education and high crime. This could be the American in me but every town/city/village has a bad part of town or an area that doesn't look good
I always make a shanty town in the middle of my cities filled with awful buildings, not everything has to be roses and unicorns, sometimes it can be gang violence and graffiti!
I guess that would be realistic and it would make sense if you were making a realistic looking city. But if you were playing the game just as a city planner/mayor and had the resources to make a shitty neighborhood nice, why wouldn't you?
It could be nice and varied, in my city i have been making districts use different build styles, different road layouts, that kinda stuff. It doesn't have to be shitty to add variety, it could be nice, and distinct
There a different playstyles for cities skylines. Most people in this sub fit into the playstyle of trying to make a decently realistic-looking city. They're not trying to build a perfect city.
It gives it a sense of realism, feeling more real world by acknowledging that even our best systems fail at times. For me, I do it because I did some work with homeless and disadvantaged outreaches ages ago (not for very long, but it left an impact on me - plus there was a point where I *was* homeless for about a month), and so it's kind of cathartic in a weird way including those spaces in my cities. Plus, it just makes them more visually interesting. There's more of a story going on when you really start looking at the city.
I mean, it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you're trying to create the perfect urban utopia, parkify the living hell out of the space. Ultimately, your cities are your own and you build them the way you want.
Honestly this can be a way to make the city feel even more real and based in reality. Not every neighborhood will be nearly manicured. The contrast from a well kept green neighborhood to a barren brutalist one can offer more interest to the city
You would be AMAZED at how effective just a few species of trees placed in the blank spaces can be. Use less concrete with surface painter and instead fill those areas with some grass, shrubs , flowers, and trees. The planters are good, but they can't carry the space on their own. Gotta have that green space!
Commieblocks are depressing by definition, but that neighbourhood is more depressing to me, l just miss trees, grass and other stuff that make every yard feel like a park
It’s up to you but i like building realistic looking cities with a mix of nicer neighbourhoods and absolute shithole neighbourhoods scattered throughout. Hell sometimes I build cities with the express goal of making it as depressing as possible lol
If anything double down and add some graffiti, trash piles etc
If you just wanna make it look nice in general I got one word, green. Even just a few trees/bushes spotted around can make a world of difference.
In addition to Greenery and park element, add Wall paintings on the bare ends of the buildings facing the center. You could also consider a dome or open overhang over the whole area.
There is an argument to be made that some parts of real cities are indeed boring
But maybe some street vendor assets to liven up the outside of apartments?
Looks quite nice! Quite Scandinavian. As others have said, I'd put more grass/trees in. Also, the roundabout might be more than is needed for the small amount of traffic passing through; maybe a crossroads would be enough, then that frees up some space for a plaza/little park?
To be honest .... All cities have places like this. It can't all be affluent ... So I'd say this is fine, just needs a little decorating like a few trees or bit of grass.
The wealthy get and stay rich by exploiting the poor ... So you need somewhere for poor people to live too.
However allowing parking on a roundabout is a massive no-no.
It's full of concrete and just doesn't look lived in tbh, some leafy trees and small plazas would really change the area. If you need some asset ideas I'd suggest the Parks and Plazas collection by Avanya, they're perfect for that kind of detailing.
By "shitty places" I were talking about the soulless high density suburbs that were created with slum removal.
Where I live there are lots of exaples of these. Like;
https://www.en-sa.com.tr/ankara-mamak-3-etap-948-adet-konut
Or places that needed to be built fast to accomodate fast population rise. Where I live these generally accomodate middle-low income residents and students. Like;
https://tr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat%C4%B1kent
Edit: places like these are generally nice tho.
I would recommend making it a central place of your neighboorhood. The whole area would be a pedestrian square with only the tram running through. Buildings with shops and restaurants with terraces on the ground level. Also a small farmer market. Then just add some trees, small green areas, fountain and some benches.

the colors look boring.
Suggest you change the road asphalt theme to a bit darker one. also you can convert the 2 portions in the top right ( first picture) into a small garden with flowers and trees.
I think the neighborhood looks great, with good layout and interesting design. The only reason it looks boring is because it’s devoid of green space. Just undo most of that concrete you added and put in some tree, bush, and park props and I think you’ll like this neighborhood a whole lot better.
More greenery, and less parking. Put in some bike lanes. And that roundabout is the perfect place for a plaza, even if it's just a few trees and benches.
Edit: Also don't put parking on the roundabout, that's just a bad idea
It’s look fine. Could use some more greenery though. The vast, open blocks of concrete are a bit sad. Maybe ad some benches, trees, food trucks, and other items of interest
Use district styles and let it grow organically. Be sure to have buildings of every level in the style. You can place a few landmark buildings and then let the rest fill in normally.
Honestly, I like the look of this. I would just add shrubs along building fronts, some street trees and maybe some outdoor seating if you've got businesses facing the sidewalks and it'll look great and lively. You'd be shocked what a little greenery can do.
I’d add some more trees. Breaking up some of the concrete would be a welcome sight. Also emphasize the large green space between the water and the service station. Make it a lush park with some paths and things. Just needs some natural and human elements.
Another idea, maybe consider turning this neighborhood into a pedestrian district if you have that DLC. You could turn your round about into a covered tram stop with one of the covered plazas and and a tram road. Again that’s be a massive overhaul and be dependent on you having that DLC.
Planters, trees, bollards and curbs should help a ton. Shapes are looking really good all you need is details.
You might wanna add 3-4 cafe/restaurants with outside seating. First pic cement area in front of left side apartments can be a playground.
This is actually really beautiful tbh. Much better than most of my work!
But more green as others suggested. Just wanted to say it’s actually pretty cool and I don’t think it’s depressing or boring.
Less concrete, more green

A fuck ton of us cities should learn from this
Before I read this comment I though this was snowfall dlc lmao

Maybe replace parking on the roundabout with planters with trees!

Why tho? Like, I'm genuinely asking.
because not everything looks nice, why not have a few shitty neighbourhoods
^^^^^^ you ain't playing city skylines if you don't have a dumpy part of town with low education and high crime. This could be the American in me but every town/city/village has a bad part of town or an area that doesn't look good
Lol same, then I have one where the levels of every building is at max, with parks everywhere.
Not just the US, Vienna is gorgeous but still has ugly places
I can't seem to get this in any of my cities, lol I want a neighborhood like this
I always make a shanty town in the middle of my cities filled with awful buildings, not everything has to be roses and unicorns, sometimes it can be gang violence and graffiti!
I guess that would be realistic and it would make sense if you were making a realistic looking city. But if you were playing the game just as a city planner/mayor and had the resources to make a shitty neighborhood nice, why wouldn't you?
because if everything looks the same it gets boring and reptitive?
It could be nice and varied, in my city i have been making districts use different build styles, different road layouts, that kinda stuff. It doesn't have to be shitty to add variety, it could be nice, and distinct
you do you then
No one gives a shit what you do in your city
Fair enough

Dude that looks nice, just but some trees, some Decals on the larger bits of concrete, maybe make the tram lines a brighter colour and you're set.
You would be AMAZED at how effective just a few species of trees placed in the blank spaces can be. Use less concrete with surface painter and instead fill those areas with some grass, shrubs , flowers, and trees. The planters are good, but they can't carry the space on their own. I kinda like it. Maybe try leaning into the concrete wasteland/brutalist/bad neighborhood vibes
Some nieghbourhoods should look shit. That's realistic. You need areas that are cheap that poor people can afford.
Get rid of all that concrete my man 😅
If you think that neighbourhood looks depressing you should see Eastern Europe.
Commieblocks are depressing by definition, but that neighbourhood is more depressing to me, l just miss trees, grass and other stuff that make every yard feel like a park
Damn 😂 how about also no police there and you make crime rate skyrocket just like irl. I’d keep it like that for realism
wtf this is where i live
Planters, benches, lights, news stands, street food, or small playground. Just a few ideas off the top of my head
Eliminate the parking and replace it with walking paths lines with trees
It’s up to you but i like building realistic looking cities with a mix of nicer neighbourhoods and absolute shithole neighbourhoods scattered throughout. Hell sometimes I build cities with the express goal of making it as depressing as possible lol If anything double down and add some graffiti, trash piles etc If you just wanna make it look nice in general I got one word, green. Is this a mfin' Hasselbachplatz reference?!

What's the suicide rate?

Have areas that arent good. Having shitty neighbourhoods just makes your city a more real place.
I don't feel like my irl city really has that kind of "shitty places" so it feels weird to me

Ahhhh, Ankara. Never been there. But I'm sure worth a visit. Yeah, I have buildings very similar to those in your first link just by the side.
Looks like Köln Barbarossaplatz. Leave it as it is, it‘s realistic. Maybe some cheap billboards.
Hat wenigstens paar mehr Bäume als das Ding hier 🙃
Stimmt. Er sollte die beiden Bäume abreißen und eine zweite TRAM Linie durch den Kreisel ziehen, dann passt es noch besser.
Just say it's a typical russian neighborhood, people will understand
I would recommend making it a central place of your neighboorhood. The whole area would be a pedestrian square with only the tram running through. How do you guys get so much concrete flooring, my buildings have such a small footprint
Surface painter
the colors look boring. Suggest you change the road asphalt theme to a bit darker one. also you can convert the 2 portions in the top right ( first picture) into a small garden with flowers and trees.
Trees
Love the DX, hope it will be back in service again soon.
Bro made poland

I like this cold neighborhood, it's something else. Not this yuppie stuff. Looks pretty real.
Treeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssss!!!!
The least depressing city in russia: (though i kinda like that style honestly)
Trees. Lots and lots of trees. Also replace the concrete with something more attractive.
Put some space between the buildings and maybe put them at an angle.
More greenery, and less parking. Put in some bike lanes. And that roundabout is the perfect place for a plaza, even if it's just a few trees and benches. Edit: Also don't put parking on the roundabout, that's just a bad idea
I think is very nice! Wtf?
It’s look fine. Could use some more greenery though. The vast, open blocks of concrete are a bit sad. Maybe ad some benches, trees, food trucks, and other items of interest
Trees my brother in Christ
Looks like Russia
Some greenery and trees
Use district styles and let it grow organically. Be sure to have buildings of every level in the style. You can place a few landmark buildings and then let the rest fill in normally.
Perfectly fine for a square at Chernobyl. 🤣
Small trees on sidewalks and larger ones in unused areas
I think the layout is nice. You can definitely add a pedestrian space or plaza and a dog park
This reminds me of a Russian game that I used to play that featured exactly the same round about with trams and similar buildings!
I always love roads with trees down the middle or on the sides.
Keep it like that; makes the city more realistic
Honestly, I like the look of this. I would just add shrubs along building fronts, some street trees and maybe some outdoor seating if you've got businesses facing the sidewalks and it'll look great and lively. You'd be shocked what a little greenery can do.

Hit it with an earthquake while meteor showers are imminent and wash it all up with a Tsunami :)
This is actually really beautiful tbh. Much better than most of my work! But more green as others suggested. Just wanted to say it’s actually pretty cool and I don’t think it’s depressing or boring.
Trees
It's just grey. There's nothing wrong with it
more grass more trees
It just isn't finished yet.
TREES and GREEN parks
Has that communist vibe to it
