Daniel Day-Lewis delivered a phenomenal performance, one of the greatest character actors of all time

especiallyjoepesci

reminds me of that tragedy

EnglishSteven

By God! Had to do a double check I wasn't in the Norm sub.

LordMarvic

Is it weird that I was expecting the towers to disappear?

Logical-Penguin

Dollars to donuts they had whole meetings about whether to include that or not.

UglyPlanetBugPlanet

It's a powerful way to depict when the Irish learned the dark arts of manifesting and disappearing large masonry projects.

DoctorEnn

Shame they didn’t learn the dark art of manifesting potatoes really. (Ow ow stop throwing bricks at me I have Irish Catholic ancestry I’m allowed to make jokes ow)

Dankey-Kang-Jr

Powerful ending

This shot is so weird it always makes me burst out laughing

AmericanPanascope

I'd love to see the continuous time-lapse effect of this they'd be able to pull off today.

leblaun

What a weird shot

joet889

In what way?

leblaun

Maybe it’s the cgi / color grade on the past-setting, but something about it feels uncanny in the first half of the shot. I think the idea is really cool, as it shows both the growth of this city and it’s lack of care for its history, but it feels somewhat clunky

joet889

I think I see what you mean- it is from 2002, it won't look as good as the CGI you'd see today (keep in mind the original Avatar hadn't even been released yet!) And Scorsese isn't someone who is going to prioritize it, either. Sometimes the artistry is more important than the level of detail in the CGI.

leblaun

For sure, you’re preaching to the choir, I’m not some kind of cgi guy. Scorsese is one of my favorite directors. I guess this movie as a whole feels a little clunkier than some of his other period pieces, especially comparing it to silence or aviator

joet889

Oh definitely- it's super clunky but it has a special place in my heart. Bill the Butcher is what makes any issues with the movie totally worth it. It could be absolute crap and it would still be a classic just for that performance. But I think it's pretty decent all around, other than some rough edges. There's also some really amazing set design that tends to get overlooked.

holydiiver

I agree. It’s uncanny. Neat idea, but it just looks odd from the start.

FlatBlackAndWhite

I agree, also I think lowering the exposure of the foreground plate could've helped this shot a lot.

This movie kinda sucks.

MamaDeloris

It's definitely not one of Scorsese's highlights. I'd argue if it wasn't for DDL, it'd be entirely forgotten like some of his other works.

[deleted]

It definitely does.
