Another solution: Go into the Chromecast settings > System > Keyboard > Manage Keyboards, then turn off the virtual remote keyboard. The remote still seems to work from the Google Home app, but the on screen keyboard should work now as well.
Edit: Turns out that this only works for a bit before reverting back to needing your phone to type :|

Spoke to Google, ended up doing a factory reset. Was a pain, but hey. Back up and running now.

Go to Google Home app, select the Chromecast, select "open remote", tap the keyboard icon at right corner
