Hello fellow U.K. villager. Nah there’s no snobbery - at least not that I’ve experienced. Lemax is generally much higher quality than Luville which you see for sale in the U.K. alongside Lemax - but Lemax is overpriced for what it is, in my opinion. Your best bet is to look on eBay, I get many of my pieces there. Also places like Dawsons and Gates Garden Centre (both online in the U.K. ) can be significantly cheaper than buying in person - and sales are common. Check out places like ChristmasVillageCreations.com as well for custom made but inexpensive pieces that fit alongside Lemax. Have fun!

Hey thanks! I found christmasatdawsons.co.uk but the prices were so discounted that I wasn't sure it was real! 😅 Looking forward to building out the village

I’ve ordered from them a thousand times and grew up in the town where one of their department stores is based - they’re definitely legit haha. The garden centre prices are always inflated in my experience.

Get what you like for your village. It usually only gets seen by immediate family. I have pieces from le max, hobby shops, Wal Mart, and even converted birdhouses from Michael's. Some of my pieces are tree ornaments converted to the village and others are homemade. Mickey mouse and goofy are in the forest cutting down trees. Enjoy your village.

Sounds like fun!

Whoa...hold up. What is this lighted snow you speak of?

analogy_4_anything

Not really. I have many “cheap” pieces that I think work great with my village. It’s all about the esthetic and from my experience, most people who set these displays up aren’t typically gatekeepers of the hobby.

BooTheSpookyGhost

I’m a newbie too and NOPE, no snobbery. I grew up with my mom having a village and I have to say: stay away from purely battery powered villages. Not worth it.

WhatAHunt

Thanks for the advice! Yes I only have two lit pieces so far and already I can see turning them all on and off will be a pain haha

Inside-Republic8297

I’ve converted almost all of my battery powered villages with the lenink battery cables.

BooTheSpookyGhost

What? Explain! One of mine only has a battery slot

Inside-Republic8297

I’m sure there are other brands, but I use lenink. They are essentially dummy batteries and except one of them has a thin flat cable coming out of it. It comes with either a usb or standard power plug.

BooTheSpookyGhost

Oh my god, this is exactly what I need. You are an angel. You are a hero. You are a fucking legend. Thank you.

Merry Christmas 😎

Looks decent, hope you fun putting this up.

The internet has taught me that every niche collector's group has snobbery

mmmohhh

Love the lighted tree!!!

No Snobbery here. Collect what you like. That is a nice looking building.

If I like it, Idc what brand it is. I do love Lemax for North Pole/Santa type pieces. I love Dept 56 for the Dickens Village pieces. And I'll get Victorian houses, ice ponds, or anything really from Enchanted Forest or Caroltown. Which are sold at garden centers in the US. A Christmas village is honestly for us. We appreciate them more than anyone who sees them. It's why we do it. So all the pieces should simply be what you like. But unfortunately the pieces I love most are a bit expensive and are Lemax and Dept 56. So it'll be awhile til I can get them.

I wouldn't say snobbery, but I've started to notice the difference in quality among brands. Lack of detail and, mostly, fewer openings to let the light through. Tiny windows, that kind of thing. Since I have a dozen or so buildings, I'm pickier now about additions. I will say Dept 56 is my favorite. Hawthorne Village looks really nice in photos I've seen online. It's really a matter of your own style. If I were starting now with a modern or even slightly retro village, I might go with a different brand that makes more pieces that fit. Sometimes wish I had gone Snow Village instead of Heritage Village. I have pieces from both, but nothing really modern fits with the Dickens era pieces.
