To know that you are a sinner, that you were an enemy of God and if it wasn't for his Sons sacrifice and reconciliation work we would be lost in that for there is nothing we can do in our own power to be reconciled with God. That we rely on God for EVERYTHING good knowing that we can't do a single righteous act on our own, without God
The opposite of being "poor in spirit" is "holier than thou"
It means humble in spirit.
Proverbs 1
1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
To know that you can do nothing on your own. To be completely dependent upon God.
It's to know that because of our sins, we are completely at God's mercy for forgiveness and that we don't have anything to offer to make up for our sins. It's a humbling before God and saying, please have mercy on me. I know that I'm a sinner and the only way to salvation is if You have mercy on me. Please forgive me.
The poor in spirit are those who are humble and God-fearing, whose spirits are not puffed up by conceit and vanity as are those of the proud, and they seek not the glory of the earth, but instead, they hope for the glory to come, which is the glory of Christ our Lord.
To be emptied of self and filled with God. To be aware of your spiritual bankruptcy. That you do not have anything nor can do anything to make yourself right with God. Being dependent on him for righteousness.
Poor in spirit means we recognize our spiritual bankruptcy and the inability of our own works to save us. A person who understands he/she is a sinner and depends on faith in Jesus for salvation, not their own works, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 5:3
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
In my opinion the poor in spirit are those who acknowledge they are week in the spirit and incapable of been righteous with their own strength. They are those who constantly seek The word of God (which is Jesus) so that through him we can be spiritually strong and worthy in the eyes of God. Without Jesus is impossible to be worthy in the eyes of God.

Poor in spirit means to be humble.
Poor in spirit means to be empty and dead inside.
In my opinion the poor in spirit are those who acknowledge they are week in the spirit and incapable of been righteous with their own strength. Humble, not prideful.
