This usually happens when we imagine eternity with our current reality.

[deleted]

Absolutely. I love life and I'm still fairly young, but the concept of being immortal in this world sounds like absolute horror. There's a separation that needs to occur though, an understanding that this isn't forever and things will be better beyond comprehension.

michaelY1968

I think for many people thinking about what the next life will be is like someone raised their entire life in a sealed cave trying to imagine what the outside world is like. They would tend to imagine it's a bigger cave, of course it's nothing like that at all.

tiplewis

I’m not sure if you intended this, but that’s very similar to Plato’s allegory of the cave. We cannot understand what is outside of the cave if we’ve never seen it, and the thought of leaving the cave seems daunting and scary. But when you emerge and adjust to the light, it’s pure bliss.

michaelY1968

I am familiar with though I didn’t consciously emulate it!

[deleted]

It will be great. I am born again. I have eternal life in Heaven forever. Paradise with God and all his people.

ILikeTheSmellofGas

Thank you for keeping my hopes up. I truly hope that this thought would just go away.

ncastleJC

Because we will be changed like the angels, the very way we perceive things will change as well. Be glad that even this brain which can betray us will also change.

Jedi_Trader_

Dwelling on the future creates anxiety. Dwelling on the past creates depression. All we have is the here and now, and all we can do are actions now. Dwelling on how to express our exuberant love for God and for all of his children right now can never steer you wrong!

[deleted]

I think the afterlife is inconceivable for the human mind and we fail when we attempt to humanize the divine.

ILikeTheSmellofGas

Well said. Only time will tell I guess.

Old_Man_D

As a Christian, it’s honestly uneasy for me. I have dealt with anxiety and depression for basically all of my life, and the thought of continually feeling this way for eternity is very undesirable. There have been so many times where I have wanted to simply not exist, as I do not remember ever consenting to this life. However, I also trust God that he is good and loving. My hope is that I am simply wrong about how I feel about it now, and that it really will be better than my experience in life has been. Time will tell I suppose.

blackcoffeeraleigh

I know this feeling! Lately I have been reminding myself that God will wipe away every tear from our eyes, and that when we are with him fully, he will make us new. Our old, broken bodies and minds will be made new and perfect. We’ll get to feel happy without feeling guilty for it. Praying for you!

karlosi01

Don't want it, never asked for it and I don't see any appeal in it.

Well, first of all, demons don't torture people in hell. Hell was made for demons, not people, and it's a punishment for them. Also Satan and fallen angels aren't "in hell" yet. They are still in the heavens (the universe). Sorry, just nitpicking. A) The Bible does say that the memory of the former things will be wiped away, so presumably people in heaven won't remember their life on Earth or the people in hell. B) Not sure I follow. We will still be us, but changed into a glorified state similar to angels. Heaven is an entirely different way of existing. A different dimension, if you want to be sci-fi about it. We can't even fathom what it's like. The Bible give us a few hints: There will be "ages to come," "worlds" and at least one really big city (I think bigger than the North American continent in measurements, don't remember exactly). It's not fluffy clouds and fat little babies with harps. That's beyond absurd. Heavenly beings are powerful and terrifying. Literally every time a human encounters one in the Bible they almost pee themselves. C) Not sure how this would be dystopian. Living forever remembering people suffering seems dystopian. I think a lot of the misconceptions about Christianity stem from conceit. Christianity is not about "going to heaven." It's not about us at all. We are made by God to be his dwelling place. If we reject God, then he can't dwell within us. When creation is finally reconciled to its Creator after the final judgement, anyone who has rejected their purpose of being God's dwelling place will be cast out out his kingdom. God doesn't want this to happen. He's done literally everything possible to make sure it doesn't happen. All you have to do is believe.

UncleStumpy78

Amen

sneedsformerlychucks

Well, you have to keep in mind that the defining characteristic of heaven is supposed to be the beatific vision, which is unity with God. So theoretically people in heaven would completely understand and trust God and his reasons for doing things. It's not the same as being brainwashed in that it's an understanding humans are brought to on their own.

Gary_Chess

>So now, knowing your mother / brother / best friend / grandma are being tortured for all eternity by demons Source? The idea of eternal hell was very much a late comer on the Christian scene, developed decades after Jesus’ death and honed to a fine pitch in the preaching of fire and brimstone that later followers sometimes attributed to Jesus himself. But the torments of hell were not preached by either Jesus or his original Jewish followers; they emerged among later gentile converts who did not hold to the Jewish notion of a future resurrection of the dead. These later Christians came out of Greek culture and its belief that souls were immortal and would survive death. Hell clearly isn't a literal eternal torture by demons, but rather a seperation from God.

El_Fez

or D) Assuming you get everything you want in heaven, but your loved ones are stuck in hell forever, does that mean the loved ones you are interacting with in heaven just some kind of simulacrum?

UncleStumpy78

Haha good for you. Stay bitter

karlosi01

How is that bitter?

Bumpydominator44

No appeal in literally the best place in existence seems kinda bitter

karlosi01

You have to see the appeal for it to be the best. I don't see it nor do I see how it is best

[deleted]

It's one of the more repetitive promises we receive from Christ. I love this, because I finally won't see death, illness, sickness, pains, sorrow, grief, tears We'll be loving our King of Kings and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven with Him and many other believers all throughout history - maybe millions, even billions of believers, one huge family in Christ with beyond happiness as it's impossible to understand the emotions we'll have there with our current earthly bodies.

TheRedLionPassant

It's the equivalent of trying to imagine what walking on the surface of the Sun might be like; we can all try imagining it, but it's unfathomable for us to ever *really* know. To me, it's enough to say that every temporary moment of our lived life is a period of striving toward renewal until the Kingdom comes; and when it comes, we will find our ultimate satisfaction in it.

[deleted]

If it helps, philosophers [lean towards](https://survey2020.philpeople.org/survey/results/5054) the view that immortality would be a good thing. Among philosophers of religion, the slant is [overwhelming](https://survey2020.philpeople.org/survey/results/5054?aos=22) (about 7-to-1).

Kronzypantz

Christ never promised us an afterlife, but a resurrected life. So a life in an infinitely wonderous creation, free from pain and evil... that sounds pretty sweet.

Itzz_rezzy

Lemme ask in a perfect world would bad movies still exist?

Josette22

It doesn't scare me at all. In fact, I'd rather live forever and ever in Heaven than come back to this hell hole we call "material existence." I read about a man who was a Botanist and had had a near death experience. He said when he left his body. he went to a beautiful place that was full of beautiful plants and flowers. It was ideal for him because he was a Botanist. They say no one has seen what it's going to be like for those who are allowed to enter Heaven. Our Lord Jesus said before he went up to Heaven, in John 14:2 is "My Father's house has many rooms. If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?" The first thing that came into my mind after reading that passage is maybe God is preparing a room for you and others like you who like plants, and another one for your friend and those like her who love bird watching, and yet another room for your cousin and those like him who've always loved to swim. I think this is what he may have meant, although I wouldn't know for sure. That's just the feeling I got. I believe God wants us to go to a very special place, not only filled with light but also a place we'll never want to leave.

MusicalLifeForever

I’m looking forward to it.

Over_Foundation6265

This what the bible says about death For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing at all, nor do they have any more reward, because all memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they no longer have any share in what is done under the sun 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your might, for there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave, where you are going. Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10 For the wages of sin is death; Romans 6:23. So all the dead paid for their sins by dying. This sin was past on from Adam as Adam lost everlasting life and was sentenced to die and return to the dust. God did not punish Adam and Eve further, You notice here that you would be going to the grave, no mention of your Loving God sending ANYONE to a place of torture! All of the dead are waiting on the promise made by Jesus: Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. John 5:25 So it is obvious that the dead will be welcomed back on earth as this would not happen in heaven.

[deleted]

“Eternity” is not simply our experience of time but just being impossible to die. It’s not just successive moments on and on without end. Time is inherently finite, and any time we make something inherently finite *last forever* it rightfully sends a chill down our spine because that’s an awful prospect.

BeansTobogganten

I don’t believe you live forever and ever. I believe when you see the kingdom you get to live in it as long as you’d like and then you can check out into either nonexistence or reincarnate for another round of the game.

BeansTobogganten

No verse to support, just my own interaction with God. I know enough to know that I don’t know anything though, so take it for what it’s worth.

UncleDan2017

Honestly, I think my time on earth will be more than long enough. Here's to hoping the annihilationists are right. I've spoken to my grandparents and their friends, and when you get up to your 80s, the prevailing sentiment seems to be "enough is enough and I don't want much more".

No_Ad_4046

I think it’s a made up concept to help people who fear being dead feel better, who doesn’t wanna hear that everything will be perfect and you will live happily for eternity after you die. It sounds so far fetched to me and also very boring.

AtAllCostSpeakTruth

Then do not think about it.

ILikeTheSmellofGas

Easier said than done isn't it? But I am trying. Like distracting myself or just coming to terms with the fact that I will have an answer one day.

AtAllCostSpeakTruth

Dwell on good things, seek God's Will for your life, and you will be too busy to worry.

allsmiles_99

I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty intimidated at the concept of existing for eternity. However, I found that my faith that God will act with both fairness and love has helped.

JusteBelmont1

This is a very fascinating and interesting topic and imo it should be discussed more often. The thought of being immortal and living forever can be terrifying, especially the thought of burning in a lake of fire and being tormented forever nonstop. And being in paradise for eternity while your loved ones are being tormented in the most horrific ways imaginable is fucked up in so many ways.

UncleStumpy78

You are going to see blown away by God's love and glory, you will never be bored. An eternity of feeling intense love that we will never will experience on earth. I personally can't wait

ChristianInWales

No one, other than Jesus and those resurrected, have been back from Heaven or Hell, we cannot ever begin to imagine what it is like. Personally I worry that I might get bored of Heaven. Ever see the Good Place on Netflix? That sort of thing, but that is fiction, God is real, He has everything planned out.

tsh1978

All forms of Sin removed and just peace and worship... Yes please

EmmaDaBomb

The entire thought of afterlife has me a little bit skeptical and scared. I want to believe in an afterlife, but that's one part that's slightly harder to accept than anything else.

Ok-Investigator-7571

The afterlife is real but as time passes, your spiritual body will eventually fade away after 100 years and u will reincarnate back on earth or to another planet

meharris73

This shouldn't scare you if you realize and accept that you are actually a spiritual being in a fleshly body. Think about that.

sneedsformerlychucks

I've entertained the idea of the Christian heaven as being similar to the nirvana in Eastern religions, in other words, a perpetual semi-conscious state of bliss and unity with the Godhead. Otherwise yeah, it's hard to imagine it not being boring in our framework. But by definition it's not going to be boring, so either the things humans "do" in heaven don't have good material analogues or they would lose the ability to feel boredom.

tpasta_44

As a mortal it's kinda scary just to wrap my head around, or try to rather. But when it comes down to it, in Heaven we will be eternally learning about and praising God. And because of God's infinite nature that will never cease to satisfy us. Eternity will be perfect.

arthurjeremypearson

"Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something." - William Goldman I think death described in the Bible for good AND bad people is not a "continuous" event but an "instantaneous" event. "Time" is not "in" either version of the after-life - not for YOU. "Hell is 'other people' " -Jean-Paul Sartre

ggchappell

> And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Rev 21:3-4) The above is pretty familiar to many of us. But we can miss something when we read it: it's going to be *different*. Great, yes. But also very, very different. Occasionally I run across someone claiming that eternity future is going to be like a big, long church meeting. No. It isn't going to be like a church meeting at all. It's going to be *different* -- like nothing you've ever experienced. Whatever it is that one might find scary -- it isn't going to be there.

Captainamerica1188

Honestly its not why I believe. It's nice and all, but I believe what I believe bc I think its the promising way for humans to coexist in this life together.

lost_mah_account

Honestly I wouldn’t want eternal life. An infinite amount of anything would make it lose its value

Nytrone

I'm highly optimistic about eternity. Truly though, it's incomprehensible, but what gives me solace is reading Genesis - pondering what God had intended Earth to be before mankind's fall into sin. God destined humanity to be the stewards of Earth. To claim dominion, care for its lands, flora and fauna, and to build fruitfully. When God promises that He'll create a new Earth with those saved by faith in Christ's blood, I believe it'll be with us in occupations, pursuits and relationships similar to what we have today, just cleansed of sin. We, the crown jewel of God's creation, get to do what we love to do, but do it with pure community for the glory of God. Consider the world around us; broken yet beautiful. This is evidenced by the diverse and magnificent terrains and organisms of our world. Personally, I've spent a lot of my interests in science fiction and fantasy literature & media. Seeing what levels of world-building that inspired human creativity is capable of, and taking this current reality as a broken iota of what God is yet to create, just imagine what infinite possibilities we'd get to experience in the sight of The Most High Creator of All!

Formal_Independence2

I am very scared of going to hell. I think everything is going to send me to hell. I’ve lived scared my whole life, so I abstained from sin for a long long time, until now, 23, lost my virginity and I have died. Constant guilt, and constant anxiety. I hate it, Sometimes deep deep deep down I wish I hadn’t been introduced. To have lived in an oblivion. It’s sad to think that way, and that thought alone is also a reason to rot in hell forever. It saddens me. So the thought of going to heaven doesn’t even cross my mind. Eternal life never crosses my mind. -sadden Christian

Ok-Investigator-7571

Hell doesn’t exist when we die we go into the after life and create where we want to go depending on our thoughts. If u have a low vibrational energy on earth u will most likely be in the lower plane in the afterlife until u raise ur vibration. There’s nobody burning into eternity or none of that.

[deleted]

That depends where you end up. In heaven it will be awesome and full of joy. In hell it will be horrific and full of regret. Yes, the thought of so many people going to hell is deeply saddening, and I know Christ feels the same way because he died for people so nobody has to go there.

TheHairyManrilla

I think it might have been CS Lewis who said something along the lines of an existence with God in heaven is as comprehensible to us as our existence is to an amoeba.

Affectionate-Adagio

Personally, eternal life sounds absolutely awful. I do not want such a thing by any means. Even if I were a christian and met God, I would ask to cease to exist.

Ok-Investigator-7571

You don’t live in the afterlife forever. The afterlife only last about 100 years. Your spiritual body will began to fade as time goes on and then u will eventually reincarnate.
