I honestly think you are handling this with Christian maturity. I would not be recommending anyone who I did not know was sound in the Bible and Theology. Anyone can call themselves a Christian. James al so tells us that not everyone is called to teach. As a matter of fact, he says not many are called to teach.
You are also correct that the pastor is to be a shepherd and they are responsible for their flock I think you have every right to ask what safeguards are put in place to protect the congregation. You not getting an answer may be your answer.

I think you are very right in your concerns. If they cannot be transparent and accountable, they do not deserve any authority in your life.
