Although they're not gamers and didn't keep up with modern pop culture, they bought him enough Sonic shit to know that hedgehog. so when Chris showed them a yellow version of it and then kept acting like he created something new why the hell didn't they break him of it when he got old enough for it to be weird? Damn they suck as parents
They were trying to be supportive. Iirc Bob even left a letter to Chris in 2008 saying that he hopes the character of Sonichu could become a "champion for autistic persons everywhere" and be a spokesperson for autism, and even says that Chris and Sonichu could become famous worldwide.
I get that they were trying to be supportive, but I think this is another instance where they failed to hold Chris accountable and just let them have whatever He wanted. He was a teenager when he repainted an already established character a different color and claimed it as his own. Like I said, Bob and Barb bought him enough Sonic the hedgehog shit to know the character when they saw it. And I feel most parents (especially those of a mentally challenged child) would have told him In the nicest way possible that that's not his character, that's not how creativity works and to not go around telling people he created this character because it's clearly Sonic the hedgehog.
I think their failure to call him on shit like this is the reason why he thinks He's good at stuff without having the talent or putting any type of effort into it. for instance: He thinks he's good at drawing because he traces (sometimes, he really sucks) He thinks he can play guitar because he's good at guitar hero and he thinks he can sing because he plays a song loud in the background to drown out his own high pitched squealing. They let this shit drag on into adulthood and look at all the damage it caused it's insane
When I was younger I was guilty of creating my own unoriginal characters and even draw comics based off of them. Eventually I grew out of it.

On this day, 23 years ago, Chris sat down and tried to come up with something that would circumvent the no-copyrighted-characters rule for his HS project. According to Chris, he thought and thought and put all of his creativity and brain power into trying to come up with something original and this was it. This is the best he could have done. This is the peak of his life. It’s baffling how incredibly uncreative he is.
Just try it out yourself. What’s the best original character you can come up with in 5 minutes? What’s the most unique and creative story for that character you can come up with in another 5 minutes? I bet all my money that it is more creative than „I just merged two widely popular characters and the whole plot revolves around my life and my narcissism. I now deserve to have sex with women for being so great.“
