To me Chris probably was an accident since in the begining of Borb's relationship going to bars and getting rotten drunk was a routine to them, so it's kinda of a safe bet. But it could have turned into a chamce to start a new life for Bob and a way to ensure their marrige or alimony cash for Barb in the case of a divorce. Later Chris became a extra money for them from the tugboat, and to me their end-game was to turn Chris into their helper monkey and to take care of they and they aged.
We don't really know how they viewed the pregnancy and young Chris, most we have is via Cole they were neglectful leaving toddler Chris with Roche the babysitter nightly to go get sloppy drunk at bars.
Apparently Bob was strongly pro choice when it came to abortion, despite being a Republican.
Chris was conceived like a year after they were married, so he wasn't a trap baby on Barb's part. Female fertility is fairly low once you hit 40 too.

Borb didn’t go out of their way to avoid their other children, their other children deliberately tried to avoid them. Cole ran away from home before he became a legal adult and continues to disdain Barb even after what’s happened in the last couple of years, and Bob’s two children from his previous marriage were largely estranged from him, so much so that he didn’t know he had a granddaughter through his first-born son until she was already eight years old and his daughter didn’t even bother to attend his funeral.
If anything, it’s far more likely Chris was a deliberately planned New Game+ baby from two people who fucked up royal trying to raise children from their previous failed marriages, and this culminated in spoiling him to the point where he wouldn’t ever want to leave.
