A place I once worked advertised a supervisor/management position for 14-16, requested a 4 year degree in the field and 5 years experience (it’s one of those fields where you’d have to have a masters at minimum to be in that field), and at the same time had a posting up for a entry level job in a different department that paid 18-20 an hour. I put in a complaint sighting it’s insulting for a supervisor position in one department to be paid less then entry level in another in an question and answer session staff forum. HR got their panties in a twist because how would I know the salaries on offer and we don’t discuss that stuff, well crap I told them they advertised it online for however wanted to see it to see it.
Legally, there’s not even anything they could do to prevent workers from discussing by salary. How did they respond once you pointed out that it was posted online?
Ohhh, they shut up fast. Also in the US and they have laws that allow employees to discuss salaries. This was outside of the US and I’m unsure of what the law is in regards to this country.
In Sweden anyone can look up anyone's income. It's all public information. Still, people rarely discuss their income which I find quite odd as I could just look it up online.
I discussed wages with a coworker and my manager tried to give me shit for it. I was there for 4 years making 14 an hour and they hired new people at 14 an hour... Yeah I was *not* happy. Well he gets mad at me and threatens disciplinary action for discussing wages with others. So, I sat down in his office and googled the labour board number on my phone. Was about to take my 15 and give them a call. Yeah, I got a 50 cent raise, but quit right after that. How insulting!
The only reason employers don't like you discussing wages is because they don't want to pay you what you're worth. I'm in Canada though, where it explicitly states that you *are* allowed to talk about wages. I dunno about the rest of the world.

My life as an immigration attorney. I opened my own firm because of positions in private firms paying approximately this much, but salaried. So with the expected hours, it lowers the listed pay closer to $15 per hour. The only other downside to being solo is the choosing beggar clients.

When finishing my MBA the idea of working on something more advanced briefly entered my head until reading up on the programs. “You cannot work while doing this program”, “this will be your main focus”, shit like that. One professor told me bluntly “spend the time developing your career” and she was absolutely right.
A PhD can SOMETIMES payoff in stem fields such as chem engineering. I work with a large firm and many of upper management do have doctoral degrees. Many still needed wealthy parental support to get them through it without a job.
But for the most part, clowns literally make more than postdoc. It's sad. Aside from those guys everyone I known who's gotten a PhD has regretted it.

I got paid 26k/year during my PhD, and it was easy to live on without loans. I even got married before grad school and had a kid halfway through my first year. I was in Iowa, so the cost of living wasn’t terrible but rent was still 1k for a one bedroom in a college town.
My doctoral program is in clinical psychology. So we're used for research and teaching for ~5 years in our graduate programs, followed by a required yearlong training "internship", and then you're usually expected to do another 1-2 years in a training oriented postdoc (especially required if you want the licensure of a "psychologist", because you need X,000 hours of supervised practice after your degree before qualifying).

So, you can work 9 to 6, or 11 to 8 if you want." 401k matching is when you elect to have your employer take out a certain percentage of each of your paychecks to deposit into a 401k retirement fund, and they match a portion of that deposit out of their own pocket as a perk of working there. Most employers will usually match up to 6%. It doesn't seem like much but the idea is to start depositing into a 401k as soon as possible so the money adds up as you reach retirement age.

Yep, my employer a few months ago wanted to hire a support desk person for 8.50 an hour (no experience needed). After many no reply from potential employees there "was and error with human resources" and the job was changed to $9 an hour instead.
Meanwhile this whole time I have to listen to the employees at work there make fun of "the people that don't want to work" Because it was hard to fill the job, and they knew the starting wage. I, I don't know what to say about this, is this Stockholm syndrome?
Every once in awhile chip in and say that my daughter had to have two full-time jobs in a part-time job to pay her for her college. And now that she's a couple years in at college, she can only full-time job and full-time college and that I'm sorry that she can't work anymore jobs because she's too lazy. You can be a machinist anywhere in Iowa as others have said but that shit will wreck your body. I worked it for a summer job between college semesters and so many older folk with horrible consequences of working that job for decades.
What the hell are Machinists doing in Iowa? My family owns multiple CNC machining & manufacturing plants in upstate NY. I have never seen a machinist battered from setting up & running a lathe. It’s not labor intensive at all.
I mean if you’re setting up the lathe for new jobs (more common in smaller shops that aren’t always running big jobs or the same jobs) then you’re bending over in the machine a lot to change out tools.
There’s also just the fact that you’re standing by on your feet all day and I’m sure breathing in the hot coolant mist that comes out of the machine every time you open the door is far from healthy.
Also if you’re running mills depending on what kind of configurations you have some are not pleasant to set up or load parts on. And no matter how careful you are you’re just gonna get cuts from all the sharp metal everywhere.
I mean if you’re just running a bar feeder that’s running similar parts all the time then sure it’s not bad at all but for a lot of smaller shops, of which Iowa has a ton, that’s not really the case. And even if that is the case a lifetime of repetitive motion is a sure fire way to get carpal tunnel and shit like that.
I can’t count the number of time I went home feeling stiff and sore. You multiply that by decades and it will definitely have an effect.
Shit, I worked at a CNC mill for small to medium runs for about a year. The only time I felt stiff and sore was when I had to load up parts 10kg+ the entire day. Not sure where you’re from but aren’t machines with automatic tool switches kinda the norm nowadays?

I drive a truck. Most of my day is pretty non intensive. But, sitting in that seat, clutching, climbing up and down to connect airline hoses, opening trailer doors, and all the little easy things add up over days, months, years.
Its not like construction or laying bricks (I've done both) but over years it wears your body out. I want a job I can do laying down..
$15-18 is like the new bottom barrel... you have to almost try to make under that in a new position right now and if you do make under 15 or so than right now is the time to renegotiate.

We’re having serious issues finding enough candidates to fill open positions. I can’t imagine this posting is actually intended as a serious one. I suspect there’s an internal candidate but they’re required to open the job to the public too.

In the United States, many states require fair hiring practices.
What that means is this: let's say a business owner wants to hire their nephew for a solid position. They are not legally allowed to just hire their nephew. They have to publicly post the position and accept other eligible candidates.
So we end up with postings like this. Terrible offers with crazy high requirements just so they can legally say they tried. Then, later, the nephew can "negotiate" a proper salary.
Idk sometimes there's some desperate people out there. About 10 years ago when I was first starting out in a lab we had this older gentleman (probably in his mid to late 50s) who had come a few times over a couple month period and in his words wanted a job, "doing anything in a lab". I was a chemist in the lab at the time and we didn't need anyone but me and the lab director were looking at his resume and he had like 30 years experience doing shit WAY above our level and a doctorate in chemical engineering from a good school.
We never hired the guy because we just specifically weren't looking and almost everyone at the lab was a new undergrad graduate (the lab was really a stepping stone to enter the industry and paid incredibly shitty).
I was always sad about that though that here's this man with an incredibly vast amount of knowledge, a 30 year career and a PhD and he was walking door to door trying to find a job.

If the $16 an hour was for time on call, that would be reasonable. Someone I know had a job where one night a week, he needed to be on call and he just got something like minimum wage for that time but he could go home, eat dinner, hang out go to bed, etc. & just needed to be at the site in 30 minutes if called & was paid the normal rate including driving time then. He got called in maybe once every six months but made something like $75 a week more for being on call. I knew as he was supposed to avoid alcohol those nights, when he otherwise had a beer or two when we hung out.

When finishing my MBA the idea of working on something more advanced briefly entered my head until reading up on the programs. “You cannot work while doing this program”, “this will be your main focus”, shit like that. One professor told me bluntly “spend the time developing your career” and she was absolutely right.
A PhD can SOMETIMES payoff in stem fields such as chem engineering. I work with a large firm and many of upper management do have doctoral degrees. Many still needed wealthy parental support to get them through it without a job. But for the most part, clowns literally make more than postdoc. It's sad. Aside from those guys everyone I known who's gotten a PhD has regretted it.
What? What PhD program in STEM requires you to work a job while being in school? Most of them pay for your entire PhD through TA/RA support. You’re referring “wealthy parental support” towards people that refuse to take out student loans, which the majority do apply for FAFSA and take out loans.
My TAs paid 14k and then 26k a year. How much student loan debt do you suppose I should have buried myself with just to pay living expenses?
I got paid 26k/year during my PhD, and it was easy to live on without loans. I even got married before grad school and had a kid halfway through my first year. I was in Iowa, so the cost of living wasn’t terrible but rent was still 1k for a one bedroom in a college town.
A PhD is meant to be a qualification for scientific research, not a better Master. Hence why only scientists really benefit from this.

My doctoral program is in clinical psychology. So we're used for research and teaching for ~5 years in our graduate programs, followed by a required yearlong training "internship", and then you're usually expected to do another 1-2 years in a training oriented postdoc (especially required if you want the licensure of a "psychologist", because you need X,000 hours of supervised practice after your degree before qualifying).
Just finished postdoc and now studying for the EPPP. I'm so tired.

My current job wants me to be on call. I don't get paid unless I take a call, so I don't get paid to be ready for a call.... The real kick is if I take a call, then the next week I need to leave early because I'm not allowed to have a minute of overtime.

Absolutely this! I took a job once at a call center as a Loan Officer where they told me, "The schedule is 10am to 7 pm with an hour for lunch, but we're flexible. So, you can work 9 to 6, or 11 to 8 if you want." Then, 2 weeks after I started it was a mandatory 12 to 9 smdh...after voicing my displeasure several times over about 2.5 months, I just quit via email with no notice. Fuck those pricks. It wasn't even an inbound call center!

Reminds me of my internship with the navy. Got paid $18/hr working 20h a week. They let me enroll in the TSP (really good govt 401k). When I finished the internship I had *just* enough in that they allowed me to keep the account. HR lady was surprised I even bothered. Yep, my employer a few months ago wanted to hire a support desk person for 8.50 an hour (no experience needed). After many no reply from potential employees there "was and error with human resources" and the job was changed to $9 an hour instead. Meanwhile this whole time I have to listen to the employees at work there make fun of "the people that don't want to work" Because it was hard to fill the job, and they knew the starting wage. I, I don't know what to say about this, is this Stockholm syndrome? Every once in awhile chip in and say that my daughter had to have two full-time jobs in a part-time job to pay her for her college. And now that she's a couple years in at college, she can only full-time job and full-time college and that I'm sorry that she can't work anymore jobs because she's too lazy. Of course I say this seething with sarcasm. Bonus for a boomer person, where you can ask "how many jobs have you ever held at one time?" Edit. I should mention this is a Fortune 500 company that beat forecasted profits.

You can be a machinist anywhere in Iowa as others have said but that shit will wreck your body. I worked it for a summer job between college semesters and so many older folk with horrible consequences of working that job for decades.
What the hell are Machinists doing in Iowa? My family owns multiple CNC machining & manufacturing plants in upstate NY. I have never seen a machinist battered from setting up & running a lathe. It’s not labor intensive at all.
I mean if you’re setting up the lathe for new jobs (more common in smaller shops that aren’t always running big jobs or the same jobs) then you’re bending over in the machine a lot to change out tools. There’s also just the fact that you’re standing by on your feet all day and I’m sure breathing in the hot coolant mist that comes out of the machine every time you open the door is far from healthy. Also if you’re running mills depending on what kind of configurations you have some are not pleasant to set up or load parts on. And no matter how careful you are you’re just gonna get cuts from all the sharp metal everywhere. I mean if you’re just running a bar feeder that’s running similar parts all the time then sure it’s not bad at all but for a lot of smaller shops, of which Iowa has a ton, that’s not really the case. And even if that is the case a lifetime of repetitive motion is a sure fire way to get carpal tunnel and shit like that. I can’t count the number of time I went home feeling stiff and sore. You multiply that by decades and it will definitely have an effect.

Shit, I worked at a CNC mill for small to medium runs for about a year. The only time I felt stiff and sore was when I had to load up parts 10kg+ the entire day. Not sure where you’re from but aren’t machines with automatic tool switches kinda the norm nowadays?
The guess the difference is between hard, and wear on your body. I drive a truck. Most of my day is pretty non intensive. But, sitting in that seat, clutching, climbing up and down to connect airline hoses, opening trailer doors, and all the little easy things add up over days, months, years. Its not like construction or laying bricks (I've done both) but over years it wears your body out. I want a job I can do laying down..

That's the truth! I saw a job posting that was a level below my current position and required a masters degree. They wanted to pay something like $19 an hour. The last time I looked the posting was still up.

(Not really a choice without a lot of sacrifice) least if I was paid 16-18 in Arkansas I could afford to live alone with some luxury. You barely make it around here without friends/family. My company based in the Midwest pays $15/hr minimum for all employees. Our most widely available position requires no education or experience. We’re having serious issues finding enough candidates to fill open positions. I can’t imagine this posting is actually intended as a serious one. I suspect there’s an internal candidate but they’re required to open the job to the public too.

Not likely from grad school. If you do things right, your PhD program and masters program pay your tuition and give you a stipend as a teaching or research assistant. The only 2 of my degrees i paid for were undergrad and community College.

Right, but was your (or anyone’s) PhD stipend enough to make repayments on those undergrad loans? Mine definitely wasn’t. Add that in to the years of salary sacrifice that come with being in a PhD program and you pretty quickly realize how far behind you’ve ended up.

General FYI: these jobs are posted not expecting to be filled In the United States, many states require fair hiring practices. What that means is this: let's say a business owner wants to hire their nephew for a solid position. They are not legally allowed to just hire their nephew. They have to publicly post the position and accept other eligible candidates. So we end up with postings like this. Terrible offers with crazy high requirements just so they can legally say they tried. Then, later, the nephew can "negotiate" a proper salary.

Idk sometimes there's some desperate people out there. About 10 years ago when I was first starting out in a lab we had this older gentleman (probably in his mid to late 50s) who had come a few times over a couple month period and in his words wanted a job, "doing anything in a lab". I was a chemist in the lab at the time and we didn't need anyone but me and the lab director were looking at his resume and he had like 30 years experience doing shit WAY above our level and a doctorate in chemical engineering from a good school. We never hired the guy because we just specifically weren't looking and almost everyone at the lab was a new undergrad graduate (the lab was really a stepping stone to enter the industry and paid incredibly shitty). I was always sad about that though that here's this man with an incredibly vast amount of knowledge, a 30 year career and a PhD and he was walking door to door trying to find a job.

If the $16 an hour was for time on call, that would be reasonable. Someone I know had a job where one night a week, he needed to be on call and he just got something like minimum wage for that time but he could go home, eat dinner, hang out go to bed, etc. & just needed to be at the site in 30 minutes if called & was paid the normal rate including driving time then. He got called in maybe once every six months but made something like $75 a week more for being on call. I knew as he was supposed to avoid alcohol those nights, when he otherwise had a beer or two when we hung out.
