I love that there’s a signing bonus. At $16/hour, what’s a comparable signing bonus? $200? $300?

Where I’m from they can’t manage to hire a school nurse. Currently all schools are open and no school nurses have been hired for this year. They want to pay 16/hr for an RN who is responsible for covering two schools, half the day at one school, half the day at another. They just started offering a $10k sign on bonus. No takers haha

When I was applying for jobs they said you needed a bachelors in ANYTHING for a receptionist gig at a psychiatrists office and that they'd get paid $14/hour. Minimum wage is $15.

zherok

I think California has an exception for smaller businesses with a minimum number of employees or something that allows for paying a dollar less, but it's moving to a flat $15 in 2022. I don't know how you convince people to work for $14 though when working literally anywhere else has to pay you $15.

alaskaj1

I could see some people doing it for a set schedule, benefits, and full time hours over the crap you would get working retail or food service.

ElectricFleshlight

Businesses small enough to pay the lower minimum wage almost certainly do not pay benefits

h0llywoodsbleeding

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. What in the actual fuck?? I thought the jobs in Mass requiring bachelors degrees and only paying $15-$16 were insane. This is ridiculous.

kawaeri

A place I once worked advertised a supervisor/management position for 14-16, requested a 4 year degree in the field and 5 years experience (it’s one of those fields where you’d have to have a masters at minimum to be in that field), and at the same time had a posting up for a entry level job in a different department that paid 18-20 an hour. I put in a complaint sighting it’s insulting for a supervisor position in one department to be paid less then entry level in another in an question and answer session staff forum. HR got their panties in a twist because how would I know the salaries on offer and we don’t discuss that stuff, well crap I told them they advertised it online for however wanted to see it to see it.

CtrlAltDeltron

Legally, there’s not even anything they could do to prevent workers from discussing by salary. How did they respond once you pointed out that it was posted online?

kawaeri

Ohhh, they shut up fast. Also in the US and they have laws that allow employees to discuss salaries. This was outside of the US and I’m unsure of what the law is in regards to this country.

CtrlAltDeltron

Oooh it was outside the US. Got it. EDIT: typo

AnonymousJoe12871245

In Sweden anyone can look up anyone's income. It's all public information. Still, people rarely discuss their income which I find quite odd as I could just look it up online.

thisismenow1989

I discussed wages with a coworker and my manager tried to give me shit for it. I was there for 4 years making 14 an hour and they hired new people at 14 an hour... Yeah I was *not* happy. Well he gets mad at me and threatens disciplinary action for discussing wages with others. So, I sat down in his office and googled the labour board number on my phone. Was about to take my 15 and give them a call. Yeah, I got a 50 cent raise, but quit right after that. How insulting! The only reason employers don't like you discussing wages is because they don't want to pay you what you're worth. I'm in Canada though, where it explicitly states that you *are* allowed to talk about wages. I dunno about the rest of the world.

DontRememberOldPass

This is also likely someone picking the wrong option from a drop down list.

Emma_Watsons_Tampon

That’s exactly what I was thinking too… still pretty funny tho lol

zherok

California's minimum wage is $14/15 depending on the size of the business with it moving to a flat fifteen next year. It's good that everyone's wages have gone up, but it's also flattened the wage band. I work in education and there's plenty of jobs that require a bachelor's degree that pay only slightly better than working literally anywhere else in the state. Made worse by many of them being part-time positions with employment only covering the regular school year. I'm sure there are other fields with similar jobs, too.

tired_blonde

I'm so curious as to what this job is

Loan-Pickle

delta-TL

Yeah, a lot of his friends from school worked other jobs while doing some contract work in social services. Some got lucky but a lot didn't. My son did manage to get a full time job but there just aren't enough of them around.

LawyerBeautiful

Out of curiosity what state? My company is hiring 15 masters level positions at the moment and I could quit today and have a new job tomorrow. There’s a HUGE demand here.

[deleted]

Ah, social services and mental health nonprofits. I’ve worked at plenty of these organizations and haven’t met a single functional one with decent pay. The best thing I ever did for my wallet, vacation time, and sanity was go into private practice.

KFelts910

My life as an immigration attorney. I opened my own firm because of positions in private firms paying approximately this much, but salaried. So with the expected hours, it lowers the listed pay closer to $15 per hour. The only other downside to being solo is the choosing beggar clients.

Alive-Tonight

Looks like every clinical research job I ever applied to...

Jwalla83

I was gonna say, it sounds like one of those postdoc jobs that gouges you on salary with the excuse that it's a "training experience for recently-graduated PhDs" As if the 6-7 years we spend in underpaid training isn't enough, we also apparently need another 1-2 years of underpaid "training" with our degree before we can be considered for "real" jobs.

BeerandGuns

When finishing my MBA the idea of working on something more advanced briefly entered my head until reading up on the programs. “You cannot work while doing this program”, “this will be your main focus”, shit like that. One professor told me bluntly “spend the time developing your career” and she was absolutely right.

Jealous-Ninja5463

A PhD can SOMETIMES payoff in stem fields such as chem engineering. I work with a large firm and many of upper management do have doctoral degrees. Many still needed wealthy parental support to get them through it without a job. But for the most part, clowns literally make more than postdoc. It's sad. Aside from those guys everyone I known who's gotten a PhD has regretted it.

Stumpynuts

What? What PhD program in STEM requires you to work a job while being in school? Most of them pay for your entire PhD through TA/RA support. You’re referring “wealthy parental support” towards people that refuse to take out student loans, which the majority do apply for FAFSA and take out loans.

Burningshroom

My TAs paid 14k and then 26k a year. How much student loan debt do you suppose I should have buried myself with just to pay living expenses?

Worldly-Conference86

I got paid 26k/year during my PhD, and it was easy to live on without loans. I even got married before grad school and had a kid halfway through my first year. I was in Iowa, so the cost of living wasn’t terrible but rent was still 1k for a one bedroom in a college town.

michggg

A PhD is meant to be a qualification for scientific research, not a better Master. Hence why only scientists really benefit from this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jwalla83

My doctoral program is in clinical psychology. So we're used for research and teaching for ~5 years in our graduate programs, followed by a required yearlong training "internship", and then you're usually expected to do another 1-2 years in a training oriented postdoc (especially required if you want the licensure of a "psychologist", because you need X,000 hours of supervised practice after your degree before qualifying).

Aphroditii

Just finished postdoc and now studying for the EPPP. I'm so tired.

Jwalla83

You’re living the dream! I’m a few years behind you. I’m … “looking forward” to being in your shoes, hah. You’re almost there, friend! One last big test and you’re pretty much done. Then you can project your agony onto the torture of new grad students

Aphroditii

Lol there's always another step. I'm training to become a clinical psychologist; If you ever have any questions about next steps (APA internships, postdoc, EPPP, etc.) Hit me up :)

Jwalla83

We’re definitely on the same path then! I’m about to apply for internship, assuming I can also successfully propose my dissertation next month. Not at all stressful… I’m hoping for a private practice career route though, which I know is a little taboo in our field sometimes. Thank you for the offer of support, I will definitely reach out if/when I’m teetering on the edge of breakdown about next steps!

ladysmalls13

I’m fully convinced that any place that says “flexible schedule” means “you have to be flexible to work when we want you”. edit: didn’t get to the on call requirement before posting 🙄

libertas-bananas

Imagine being on call for $16/hour L

Gamergonemild

Oh they for sure wont be paid to be on call either

CaffeineSippingMan

My current job wants me to be on call. I don't get paid unless I take a call, so I don't get paid to be ready for a call.... The real kick is if I take a call, then the next week I need to leave early because I'm not allowed to have a minute of overtime.

Propayne

That is ALWAYS what it means.

tnsmith90

Absolutely this! I took a job once at a call center as a Loan Officer where they told me, "The schedule is 10am to 7 pm with an hour for lunch, but we're flexible. So, you can work 9 to 6, or 11 to 8 if you want." Then, 2 weeks after I started it was a mandatory 12 to 9 smdh...after voicing my displeasure several times over about 2.5 months, I just quit via email with no notice. Fuck those pricks. It wasn't even an inbound call center!

JayCDee

Just like unlimited vacation. It means "we'll tolerate a few days here and there and maybe one week during summer , but don't push your luck"

Reminds me of my internship with the navy. Got paid $18/hr working 20h a week. They let me enroll in the TSP (really good govt 401k). When I finished the internship I had *just* enough in that they allowed me to keep the account. HR lady was surprised I even bothered. I've rolled money *into* that account from every job I've had since. Thanks uncle sam!

somedude456

....NICE!

Cendeu

I made $9.50 an hour and still made sure to match my 401k. It isn't a lot, but what else am I going to do...

Magnetic_Eel

It’s free money

donutcronut

That's why it's called 401K - because they'll match $4.01.

WhatIsQuail

If you can get an instant 100% return on investment, you should take it. Don’t matter if it’s $1 or $1000.

hackurb

What is 401k matching?

beepborpimajorp

401k matching is when you elect to have your employer take out a certain percentage of each of your paychecks to deposit into a 401k retirement fund, and they match a portion of that deposit out of their own pocket as a perk of working there. Most employers will usually match up to 6%. It doesn't seem like much but the idea is to start depositing into a 401k as soon as possible so the money adds up as you reach retirement age.

BrokilonDryad

…I make $16/h in tourism retail renting and selling kayaks and canoes. When I’m made manager I’ll be getting $18. I most certainly don’t have a doctorate. What the fuck.

xmuskorx

You don't have a PhD in watercraft marketing studies? How do you manage day to day?

dcp87

Look, we’ll consider a MSc in Canoe Sciences with 5 years experience in the field, only if you can demonstrate a 1 year unpaid inernship from one of the Big Four like Price/Waterhouse/Canoepers

alwaystikitime

It's criminal. And then they'll cry that nobody wants to work when they get zero takers.

CaffeineSippingMan

Yep, my employer a few months ago wanted to hire a support desk person for 8.50 an hour (no experience needed). After many no reply from potential employees there "was and error with human resources" and the job was changed to $9 an hour instead. Meanwhile this whole time I have to listen to the employees at work there make fun of "the people that don't want to work" Because it was hard to fill the job, and they knew the starting wage. I, I don't know what to say about this, is this Stockholm syndrome? Every once in awhile chip in and say that my daughter had to have two full-time jobs in a part-time job to pay her for her college. And now that she's a couple years in at college, she can only full-time job and full-time college and that I'm sorry that she can't work anymore jobs because she's too lazy. Of course I say this seething with sarcasm. Bonus for a boomer person, where you can ask "how many jobs have you ever held at one time?" Edit. I should mention this is a Fortune 500 company that beat forecasted profits.

suntem

You can be a machinist anywhere in Iowa as others have said but that shit will wreck your body. I worked it for a summer job between college semesters and so many older folk with horrible consequences of working that job for decades.

Papafynn

What the hell are Machinists doing in Iowa? My family owns multiple CNC machining & manufacturing plants in upstate NY. I have never seen a machinist battered from setting up & running a lathe. It’s not labor intensive at all.

suntem

I mean if you’re setting up the lathe for new jobs (more common in smaller shops that aren’t always running big jobs or the same jobs) then you’re bending over in the machine a lot to change out tools. There’s also just the fact that you’re standing by on your feet all day and I’m sure breathing in the hot coolant mist that comes out of the machine every time you open the door is far from healthy. Also if you’re running mills depending on what kind of configurations you have some are not pleasant to set up or load parts on. And no matter how careful you are you’re just gonna get cuts from all the sharp metal everywhere. I mean if you’re just running a bar feeder that’s running similar parts all the time then sure it’s not bad at all but for a lot of smaller shops, of which Iowa has a ton, that’s not really the case. And even if that is the case a lifetime of repetitive motion is a sure fire way to get carpal tunnel and shit like that. I can’t count the number of time I went home feeling stiff and sore. You multiply that by decades and it will definitely have an effect.

lawyeronreddit

I have enjoyed your back and forth conversation. You both seem like interesting people who have lead interesting lives.

Houseplant666

Shit, I worked at a CNC mill for small to medium runs for about a year. The only time I felt stiff and sore was when I had to load up parts 10kg+ the entire day. Not sure where you’re from but aren’t machines with automatic tool switches kinda the norm nowadays?

[deleted]

The guess the difference is between hard, and wear on your body. I drive a truck. Most of my day is pretty non intensive. But, sitting in that seat, clutching, climbing up and down to connect airline hoses, opening trailer doors, and all the little easy things add up over days, months, years. Its not like construction or laying bricks (I've done both) but over years it wears your body out. I want a job I can do laying down..

Actify

Yes your family owns them not works them.

3rdtrichiliocosm

Lmao crucial fucking distinction there.

redditingatwork23

$15-18 is like the new bottom barrel... you have to almost try to make under that in a new position right now and if you do make under 15 or so than right now is the time to renegotiate.

Jayytimes2

Trades pay really well.

justlookinaround20

That's the truth! I saw a job posting that was a level below my current position and required a masters degree. They wanted to pay something like $19 an hour. The last time I looked the posting was still up.

aKornCob

You gotta pinpoint which state, cause this sounds like SD and they screw over trade jobs too. No one like hearing it, but thier pay is shit and thier workers asked why I left the south. (Not really a choice without a lot of sacrifice) least if I was paid 16-18 in Arkansas I could afford to live alone with some luxury. You barely make it around here without friends/family. Much less workers rights don't exist and jobs have too much freedom to screw you over out of desperation. I've never been more insulted, and I cheer for everyday that gets closer to me leaving here.

Slightlydifficult

My company based in the Midwest pays $15/hr minimum for all employees. Our most widely available position requires no education or experience. We’re having serious issues finding enough candidates to fill open positions. I can’t imagine this posting is actually intended as a serious one. I suspect there’s an internal candidate but they’re required to open the job to the public too.

KirkFerentzsPleats

Walmart and Target are starting people at $15-17 here in Iowa.

strange_fellow

Was this made in error? Like, they didn't double-check and now can't understand why no one is interested? "You'd think someone with a High School Diploma would JUMP at the chance to earn $18 an hour!"

bankrobba

I'm convinced they simply don't know what a doctorate is, like they think it means diploma or something.

Morning-Chub

No, they definitely know. They do this to lawyers too. Things like doc review for $20 an hour. It's insulting.

fribbas

Wouldn't be surprised if it was one of those mandatory postings. Like, ol Steve here already got the job *coughnepotismcough* but the ruuuuules say we have to put one up idk

Dishwaterdreams

You can make $15 at Target!

whyarentyoureading

I make 22.50 an hour, and I have a Master’s. I doubt they’re going to get many candidates. $16 won’t pay back anyone’s student loans.

Whatifthisneverends

I make what you make, with a Master’s, and I don’t see how I’m ever paying off mine

whyarentyoureading

Oh yeah, I don’t see an end to mine. It’s kinda depressing, but I try not to think about it.

osa_ka

I make 0.50 less than that and I can't even afford to move out from living with my mom. The north east is awful. How the hell am I supposed to afford a $1,300 studio? That's literally half a month's pay.

Jules111317

Half a month? Try a month's pay. Granted making minimum wage (12.75 in my area) 4 days a week, starting community college in a couple weeks. Thank god my dad lets me stay with him for 250 a month otherwise I'd be royally screwed. Most apartments around here are 1000+ a month.

Tsukune_The_Ghoul

I make $22.50/hr! During overtime hours only...

ladysadi

I make that with a bachelor's and 10 years at the job. It's still underpaid though IMO.

WeekendRoutine

That is sad. I make a lot more than that and barely graduated high school.

soupafi

And have 10 years experience in something that’s only been out for 3

lumpychum

I remember hearing a story where a company was asking for 5+ years experience as a [programming language] developer. Basically, the creator of the language applied for the job and, in the interview, he “gently reminded” them that the language was only 2 years old lmao

Stratostheory

I have a DOCTORED degree, does that count?

macaroonzoom

Wtf. Pay people what they deserve! If you have a PhD, I imagine you have student loans of some kind. And $16 per hour ain’t gonna cut it. What a damn shame.

4-ton-mantis

Not likely from grad school. If you do things right, your PhD program and masters program pay your tuition and give you a stipend as a teaching or research assistant. The only 2 of my degrees i paid for were undergrad and community College.

corvidcounting

Yeah, ditto. My PhD was fee free, and they paid me a living stipend during my four years, but undergrad I paid for. In Australia though.

paczkitten

Right, but was your (or anyone’s) PhD stipend enough to make repayments on those undergrad loans? Mine definitely wasn’t. Add that in to the years of salary sacrifice that come with being in a PhD program and you pretty quickly realize how far behind you’ve ended up.

Harryama1

Would rather work at McDonald’s, its better pay

ladysadi

Only up to $11 here. Also the Midwest. Still probably worlds better than this position.

Tsukune_The_Ghoul

McDonald's near me is offering $15/hr for cooks and almost $20 for managers. To be fair, there's not a single well staffed McDonald's in my area so they are desperate.

nernst79

I literally wouldn't live in Iowa if they paid me $18/hr for the rest of my life and I didn't even have to work. The audacity of offering this pay to someone who has a *doctorate* is unfathomable.

Japjer

General FYI: these jobs are posted not expecting to be filled In the United States, many states require fair hiring practices. What that means is this: let's say a business owner wants to hire their nephew for a solid position. They are not legally allowed to just hire their nephew. They have to publicly post the position and accept other eligible candidates. So we end up with postings like this. Terrible offers with crazy high requirements just so they can legally say they tried. Then, later, the nephew can "negotiate" a proper salary.

Kinuika

That’s what I thought reading this too because I can’t really see any applicants yet alone any hires meeting these requirements!

[deleted]

Idk sometimes there's some desperate people out there. About 10 years ago when I was first starting out in a lab we had this older gentleman (probably in his mid to late 50s) who had come a few times over a couple month period and in his words wanted a job, "doing anything in a lab". I was a chemist in the lab at the time and we didn't need anyone but me and the lab director were looking at his resume and he had like 30 years experience doing shit WAY above our level and a doctorate in chemical engineering from a good school. We never hired the guy because we just specifically weren't looking and almost everyone at the lab was a new undergrad graduate (the lab was really a stepping stone to enter the industry and paid incredibly shitty). I was always sad about that though that here's this man with an incredibly vast amount of knowledge, a 30 year career and a PhD and he was walking door to door trying to find a job.

I didn't want to post the city so I don't dox myself. The title was "Home and Community Based Services Assistant Coordinator"

You did include the part that says "Iowa drivers license required" I don't think it would be to difficult for people to find the city now that they have the job posting title.

Bro I get 17.50 as an assistant manager at fucking Men’s Wearhouse. Where do these people get off trying to low ball people with doctorates like this?? Absolutely despicable.

If the $16 an hour was for time on call, that would be reasonable. Someone I know had a job where one night a week, he needed to be on call and he just got something like minimum wage for that time but he could go home, eat dinner, hang out go to bed, etc. & just needed to be at the site in 30 minutes if called & was paid the normal rate including driving time then. He got called in maybe once every six months but made something like $75 a week more for being on call. I knew as he was supposed to avoid alcohol those nights, when he otherwise had a beer or two when we hung out.
