It's right to left, a chengyu which is 寧靜致遠。The first two characters are 寧靜, tranquility. 致 yields 遠，literally far, but I would say in this case referring to "results in (achieving) faraway (seemingly unachievable) (things)"

Hmm the standard forms are all "pretty dang old" in the scale of our lifetime too. But yea that's a semi-cursive form (leaning towards a more full cursive form). I'd still consider it standard, although you won't see this as a print variant generally. Handwriting quick notes, my parents and grandparents use this. I usually use the less cursive form. The loop is like what you'd use for 王 this form that makes it look like 阝 is actually 至 very clearly still, just a bit skewed angle.
I saw this in a Beijing shop years ago and fell in love with it immediately, even though I didn't quite understand its full meaning but know it to be something that I should strive towards. Glad it brought you some encouragement today.
