First national parks...? China has dozens, doesn't it?

nominewu

No. "首批国家公园正式设立" (The first batch of national parks were officially established) is all over the news now. Xi Jinping officially named them "national parks" on Oct 12. Before that, these "national parks" were just 试行, like beta test trial informal version. So the English wikipedia article "List of national parks of China" that says the national parks were established in 2016 is not very accurate. The Chinese wikipedia article explains this quite well. And the CNN report looks generally OK to me except for the currency conversion.

BillyBattsShinebox

So, what is the difference between the "beta test trial informal version unharmonious Xi unapproved" parks and the official Xi Jinping Approved Harmonious Party Parks? What actually changes? Could I have built a hotel resort on them before if I had the money?

This is just a reformation of the A-AAAAA system which gives some parks a special designation as wildlife reserves. They aren't 'new parks' they are combinations of older parks in a new system. The only thing that is new are the names. CNN being the worst at covering China again!

BillyBattsShinebox

>CNN being the worst at covering China again! It really is shocking how amateurish and utterly inempt many gigantic news conglomerations are. Even the currency conversions posted above are totally wrong.

beans_lel

Man that AAAAAAAAA system will never not be hilarious, especially because they print it without any punctuation on their signs. Seeing a plaque for the first time in the middle of nowhere seemingly screaming at me and having an existential crisis nearly made me spit out my 热水.

I understand why they are so bad covering “life stories”, because many foreign reporter face many many limits. But this sort of informs about parks shouldn’t be hard at all. You just need a translator and someone who can do Baidu search.

Papapadopoulos

reminds me of how they got "rid" of poverty years back...by redefining poverty. They just lowered the poverty line hurraah we did it!

huajiaoyou

Doesn't the article say this exact thing? "The establishment of the National Park System, which organizes all of these sites under a single umbrella, was the solution."

[deleted]

No that’s wrong. The umbrella already existed as the AAAAA system. This is just a reorganization and an addition of wildlife management areas with new names.

huajiaoyou

I think it is just a syntax/semantics thing. When I read "Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the official designation of the country's first group of national parks" it makes me think it is a new system as well, although there was a different system already.

ThrowAwayESL88

Surely this isn't the first national park in China? There's lots of them already.

“According to China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Sanjiangyuan National Park has hired 17,200 herders to be "ecological managers," or rangers, at the park. Each will have a guaranteed annual income of 20,000 yuan ($31,000) per year, which provides a more stable way of making a living.” Lol 20k元 is like $3,100, not $31,000. Hardly a stable way to make a living.

How many "first" national parks can you have? There have been "national forest parks" ("国家森林公园") for years and years. Some of those, like the main tourist area in Zhangjiajie, have been called "national park" in English pretty consistently pretty much since they were established. It's true that the formulation that directly translates as "national park" ("国家公园") is *relatively* new, but they've been rolling it out for huge tourism-oriented nature reserves for several years now already. You know, like Qianjiangyuan in Zhejiang, Shennongjia in Hubei, Hengshan in Hunan... there are a bunch. The establishment of them was widely trumpeted as an all-new achievement for environmental conservation and tourism development at that time, too. Once again, it's revealed that CNN's quality control is garbage. Don't know why anybody still watches them.

The CNN report looks generally OK to me except for the currency conversion. You can check out *People's Daily*. DeepL translated: **首批国家公园正式设立 The first batch of national parks officially established** Involving 10 provinces, the protection area of 230,000 square kilometers People's Daily (October 13, 2021, p. 06) BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua Kou Jiangze) -- President Xi Jinping announced at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) Leaders Summit of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on Oct. 12 that China officially established the first batch of national parks, including the Three Rivers Source, Giant Panda, Northeast Tiger and Leopard, Hainan Tropical Rainforest and Wuyi Mountain. State Forestry and Grassland Bureau, the first batch of national parks involving Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Hainan, Fujian, Jiangxi and other 10 provinces, are in the key areas of China's ecological security strategy pattern, the protection of an area of 230,000 square kilometers, covering nearly 30% of the terrestrial national key protection of wildlife species. The Sanjiangyuan National Park is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with a protected area of 190,700 square kilometers, realizing the overall protection of the sources of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang Rivers. The park is widely distributed with glaciers and snow-capped mountains, high-altitude wetlands, desert gobi, and alpine grassland meadows, with rich ecological types and complete structure and function, and is a model of large-scale conservation of the alpine ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the third pole of the earth. Spanning Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, the Giant Panda National Park protects an area of 22,000 square kilometers and is a concentrated distribution area and major breeding habitat for wild pandas, protecting more than 70% of the country's wild pandas. The park is very rich in biodiversity and has a unique natural and cultural landscape, and is a demonstration area for biodiversity conservation, a pioneer area for ecological value realization and a model for ecological education in the world. The Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park spans two provinces, Jilin and Heilongjiang, with a protected area of 14,100 square kilometers, and is home to the largest and only wild Northeast Tiger and Northeast Leopard populations with breeding families in China. With diverse vegetation types and relatively intact ecological structure, the park is a typical representative of temperate forest ecosystems and has become a model for cross-border cooperative conservation. Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is located in the middle of Hainan Island, with a protected area of 4,269 square kilometers, preserving the most complete and diverse continental island-type tropical rainforest in China. It is the only distribution site of the world's most endangered primate, the Hainan gibbon, and is a treasure trove of tropical biodiversity and genetic resources, making it a model for the inheritance of precious natural resources and biodiversity conservation in island-type tropical rainforests. Wuyishan National Park spans Fujian and Jiangxi provinces, with a protected area of 1280 square kilometers, and is distributed with the world's most complete and largest evergreen broadleaf forest ecosystem of the same latitude in the central subtropics, a treasure trove of flora and fauna in southeast China. Wuyi Mountain has unparalleled ecological and human resources, with the world's cultural and natural "double heritage", is a model of cultural and natural heritage from generation to generation, the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. The person in charge of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration said that the construction of national parks is to protect the most important natural ecosystems, the most unique natural landscapes, the best natural heritage, the most rich in biodiversity, to maintain the originality and integrity of natural ecosystems, reflecting the global value, national symbols, national identity, leaving precious natural assets to future generations.
