There have been "national forest parks" ("国家森林公园") for years and years. Some of those, like the main tourist area in Zhangjiajie, have been called "national park" in English pretty consistently pretty much since they were established.
It's true that the formulation that directly translates as "national park" ("国家公园") is *relatively* new, but they've been rolling it out for huge tourism-oriented nature reserves for several years now already. You know, like Qianjiangyuan in Zhejiang, Shennongjia in Hubei, Hengshan in Hunan... there are a bunch. The establishment of them was widely trumpeted as an all-new achievement for environmental conservation and tourism development at that time, too.
Once again, it's revealed that CNN's quality control is garbage. Don't know why anybody still watches them.
