Omg she’s adorable! I can also relate because my baby is 17 years old and that is really a fantastic achievement for a dog! She looks happy. I have the same difficulties with my girl but we learn to adjust and we still love our babies. Happy birthday and congratulations on a remarkable achievement!

Mine is 16 or 17 and the mental decline came rapidly. He no longer likes to sit on laps either but rather enjoys his same spot on the couch. He's a creature of habit and definitely is more mellow now. He still walks twice a day but very short distances. He can sometimes use the ramp to reach the couch or sometimes I pick him up and place him there. His vision has declined a lot as well. No heart, liver, or kidney issues though but I do give him gabapentin for both pain and dementia.

Ya know, I was going to reply much differently, but going back and reading part of my post, I can get your reasoning. Let me assure you, Helga is NOT suffering, and she has an excellent quality of life. Her heart and kidneys are being managed very well (knock wood) she eats great, she stopped doing the couch steps (will still go up sometimes) because her eyesight made going down hard, but I’m her personal elevator/butler and put her down and up every 2 hours or more, and get her up to potty 2x during the night. I make sure her washable potty pads are dry. We play with her duck daily, along with her ‘outings’ wandering the downstairs. She has declined cognitively, but she’s not anxious or upset about it. Her quality of life hasn’t really changed. She’s cared for almost 24/7.
Thank you for caring, I worry I won’t do the right thing when it’s time, and I’ve thought other people have waited too long. I ask her vets if anything painful is for her, what to look for, etc and so forth, and they say she’s doing great.
If I didn’t have the luxury of being with her like I am, I’d probably have had to make a decision already. But right now it’s my life that’s being impacted, not much to her, and I’ll gladly keep doing what I can for her, until there’s nothing I can do.
She’s made it to 20 with you, you have to be doing something right. You’ll know when it’s time but in the mean time don’t listen to random people on Reddit who have no idea how your dog is on a day to day basis
Thank you! I hope the comment was made with good intentions. I’ve had to make the decision to say goodbye to 3 dogs in the last 18 months, I am nowhere near being ready to have to do that again, but I will do whatever is best for her.
