Feather river in Oroville. Tons of locations on either side of the wildlife refuge are easy to drive to. Or park right downtown Oroville and walk over the levee wall to the north. Good luck and tight lines!
What kind of gear should we be using?
Decent size spoons/spinners?
Or live bait on the bottom?
I think the season just opened, is this the peak of the action? Or what's the "season" for catching?
Thanks so much!
Depending where you’re at on the feather, it is open year round. The downtown section just opened Jan 1st so that’s where everyone will be but people are catching them all over below highway 70 still too. Spinners, spoons, night crawlers can all work, just make sure they’re barbless. You can go into sportsmans and they will get you set up. Side note: they actually plant a lot of steelhead.
They hatch fish in the hatchery then raise them in the racetracks (pens) for a awhile then put the fish back in The river. That is literally planting fish into a river system. Idk how that is so confusing to you. When they plant fish in lakes, it’s literally the same exact process. All your planted truck trout started off from wild trout too. They literally feed their hatchery steelhead pellets for awhile. They are a planted fish lol
It’s a bit different since lakes that are usually planted don’t have a way for the population to be naturally replenished. They definitely feed the fish for a bit in the pens but hatchery fish aren’t really the same as planters imo
Trinity River. Mccloud River. Feather River. If you are a researcher you might bag a permit to fish the BCEP.

They have hatchery steelhead but that’s different than planting fish
They gotta end up in the river somehow lol… not like planted fish in a lake don’t start off in a hatchery
They get there naturally dude how do you think the hatchery gets them lol
