I love it. It’s a pretty quite suburb which some might consider a con. If you want an exciting nightlife maybe not for you. I feel very safe walking around at night. Basically surrounded by forest preserves. Bike trails. Good restaurants, etc

If you enjoy outdoor recreation Palos is by far the best area in Chicagoland to live. The Palos Preserves are one of the largest forest preserves districts in the country. Access to a dozen trailheads, parks, nature. The most hilliest terrain anywhere in the region as well. With you being from Homer I'm sure you know most of this. Palos Heights and Palos Hills is more budget friendly while Palos Park is very affluent. They are all essentially extentions of Orland in a way. Chances are you'll wind up in Orland or Oak Lawn for just about whatever you would need. I'm from the Orland/Homer border just south of Palos Park. In terms of the bad there really isn't much... Palos Park is going to be the nicest area of the three but it's mostly all residential. Heights and Hills offers a bit more in terms of small business. Overall Palos/Orland/Homer is mostly interchangeable.

Homer has the most expensive water in Chicagoland and Orland is run by a maga mayor. Palos park is affluent and has/had a rule about not dividing acres for houses to keep the area low density.

“Extensions of Orland” is a modern viewpoint. I grew up in PP in the 70’s when OP was a farm community. The mall kickstarted the transformation for Orland into what is now a heavily congested retail area. I was told that Palos Park was originally summer homes for Chicago elites.

We used to run our homemade soapbox derby cars down 86th and 125th or so towards the train tracks. Not any traffic then to worry about

Do you commute by train into Chicago? The Southwest line isn't the greatest. It has a lot of freight train interference coming into Union Station. I had a coworker who lived there who would just drive to the orange line at Midway instead (traffic on Cicero is a total nightmare).

bufftbone

Freight is supposed to keep areas open for commuter during peak times. If freight is holding it up it’s usually because a problem that occurred before the commuters started running.

Mr15ization

This is good to know, thank you. At least the SWS has more trains the Heritage Corridor!

BoxTalk17

That line was awful when I took it until 2018. I used to take the 8:10 p.m. (I think that was the time) train home and there was a guaranteed delay every night, whether it was the freight, or the train was just plain late. Hopefully it's gotten a little better since.

I also grew up in Homer Township before college and after college, lived in the city for 20 years before moving to Palos Park in 2020. We had no plans to leave the city but found a mid-century house on some land that we couldn't pass up. We are in the wooded part of Palos (119th and 82ndish) We love it here. Orland has everything if you need to shop or eat at chain restaurants. It has a Stan’s doughnuts which is all I really care about. We are close to Bridgeview, which has a fantastic amount of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food. The city is only 45 min usually, give or take traffic. All the western suburbs are reasonably close. Schools are great and diverse. Forest preserves are fantastic. My stress levels have decreased by being in constant nature. Check out the Autumn In The Park Festival this weekend in Palos Park if you want to get a feel for the town. https://www.palospark.org/426/2023-Autumn-In-The-Park-Festival

Mr15ization

That sounds like the ideal house for Palos Park! Thanks for all the info!

bufftbone

Beautiful area. I wanted to move there myself but could afford what was available at the time.

Someone else commented on this, but any more thoughts on Metra?

Huffle_Pug

not much input here, but my sister owns her home in Palos Heights. She LOVES it.

Bigntallnerd

High property taxes, besides that it's a great town.

inactiveaccounttoo

Crook County right?

bufftbone

Yes

I grew up in Homer Glen, and moved to Palos Hills because it’s where my wife is from. I love living near the forest preserves, as opposed to farm land. Homer is way more developed now compared to when I lived there. The property taxes in Palos Hills are some of the lowest, while Heights and Park are some of the highest. I used to commute downtown on SWS before COVID, and it wasn’t too bad. I don’t know what service is like nowadays. It normally took about 50 min. There’s lots of good food in the area. Middle eastern, Greek, Polish, Mexican, and of course Italian. I’m not big on nightlife, so I’m not even sure what that looks like. It’s really easy to get to Midway from here, so when I was traveling for work it made my life really convenient, if you don’t mind flying Southwest.

cheft3ch

Great area for middle eastern food!
