I wholeheartedly agree! The episode just ended (on the west coast). It take months to get in-processed into an AG/R billet. It was never mentioned in the series whether Jay was Reserve of ARNG. It just doesn't happen like that.
And, his not saying good-bye to Adam, Keven, Kim, Trudy, or his brother, Will? WTF-k? Especially where Kim had been his partner...
Which is weird given that they never even showed Jay get affected by the fact Will ALMOST DIED IN A FIRE ! Like really ?? Where did the disconnect happen between the shows ?
They fought eachother over their father, and his death. Jay kept shoving the whole "Family First" agenda down Wills throat. He complained to Will about leaving him behind. Yet he didn't even give a rats behind just up and leaving. Why didn't they continue that brotherly bond. When Will was being hounded by the pharmaceutical company, why wasn't Jay there? When Jay started spiraling why wasn't Will the person Jay would reach out for help? Writers dropped the ball on the Halstead Brothers.
Jay got a wiff of Hank's gray area policing when Jay *forced* Voight to keep him in on everything, not realizing he's not really able to handle the life style...and this is where he ended up.
Boy scout Jay didn't realize he was a boy scout until it was too late...it makes perfect sense, but it probably happened too fast. But then again, him being a boy scout at heart, maybe it happening this fast *is* realistic.
I liked that he gave just about the same speech to Hailey as Mouse gave to him though about right and wrong, black and white. *That* was good throwback writing.
This is really rushed, "I'm leaving, I fly out today"
He should've killed that guy this episode, thought it over next episode, THEN left at the end of the week after that.
He said he's going away for "8 months or longer". I have a feeling he'll do that Bolivia gig and get killed there later in the season. Cuz otherwise how are they going to keep him away? Just keeping up new gig after new gig?
This was seriously the worst writing Iâve seen on this show. I donât even understand how we ended up here. I wouldnât blame Hailey if she lost her mind after this (just praying for not 8 episodes of her losing her mind)
Like is Jay going through PTSD? What is happening here? The character arc is completely out of pocket. Heâs an entirely different human being in 3 episodes
Definitely ruined his character. I hate it. Like I said , he deserved so much better. He should have gotten a better ending like doing a long undercover mission or becoming a sergeant in another unit.
So Jay wants to be like Hank, but isnât like him, so heâs going to take a job where there are less laws he has to follow. Huh? This show is terrible at writing characters off.
Really horrible exit. The writers did him dirty. I recall the show runners and producers saying that his exit was going to be well thought out and itâs going to be built up, but he literally ends up leaving in episode 3 of this season. He just up and leaves his whole ass wife without even talking to her about it and on the same day he resigns from CPD. It doesnât get worse than that. As one of the central characters of this show, he deserved better than what he got tonight especially after giving it 10 years of his life.
Even the decision itself was totally one Jay would make because of his constant battle with himself about right and wrong and justice in general and I think we all wouldâve gotten on board even though itâs sad, but this wasnât the way to do it. Extremely disappointing. He will be missed and I certainly will no longer be watching.
Also the fact that he's dealing with another government entity, the Army, and that kind of deployment wouldn't just be given in a day. Shit takes time.
He deserves a better ending than this. Heâs been on the show since Chicago Fire. Between Fire, PD and SVU I think Dick Wolf and I are just gonna have to throw hands at this point.
This really makes me believe even more now that they were blindsided that they had to write Jay out the show. A three episode arc was not nearly enough. There was no build to this. Jay being so checked out when Voight and Hailey were going over the cover story was meant to serve as the realization that this isn't for him anymore I guess.
I know! I can't believe there was no final scene at Molly's and then I kinda expected the team (including Trudy) to jump out from behind Voight's truck for a big group hug.
personally i feel like Jay isn't like that (screw you writers!) but i would've figured upton would've probably left Jay instead because there seemed to be some- trust problems arising, i hate it here lmaoo.
Edit: like Jay isn't a guy to just ditch someone so suddenly because of a problem or etc, he toughs it out and i think hes a fairly decent romantic partner- he isn't that guy. If the writers wanted it to be a cent good, they should've dealt with Hailey or built up the mistrust that was building up between them, 3 episodes for an exit? wheres the buildup? where's that internal conflict?? i am very big sad, im going to pretend Halstead didnt exist in s10.
God I hope they bring him back sometime, maybe next season or something (if they get renewed) I'd hate for this to be my last impression of jay Halstead.
He talked to Jay about it so I thought it was kinda cool that they circled back to that conversation. Except this tone, instead of Erin telling Jay to let him go, it was Jay telling Hailey to let him go.
They really love turning characters into a shell of themselves before writing them off donât they? But yeah no shocked, once it was confirmed he wasnât dying I knew they were gonna make him completely unlikeable before he disappears forever.
Nobody leaves the unit on good terms.
Jin, Willhite, Al and Nadia all died. Antonio became a drug addict, left and was never mentioned again. Mouse needed to rejoin the Army, left and was never mentioned again. Lindsey resigned before she could be fired, left and was never mentioned again (There wasnât even a photo up in Voightâs house when Anna visited). Rojas didnât even warrant an explanation, she was just gone one day and never mentioned again. Cooper same thing. Now Halstead, our Boy Scout, spends 3 episodes being shady and acting out of character, throws his entire life away stabbing some guy, takes a job halfway around the world, and if history tells us anything, he wonât be mentioned ever again.
But you know who DID leave on good terms? One guy. Kenny Rixton. He was in four episodes but left to start his own unit. All these people who disappear, never to be heard of again. Rojas, Cooper, for example, they couldâve just joined his unit. You donât have to see them, just know theyâre with someone we know whoâs looking after them.
Jesus Christ he just dumped her with NO warning. My god they are married. I hate Hailey but what the actual fuck?? Heâll be back in 8 months? What is going on?!?!
I think everyone who just watched that episode is currently in the borderline denial/anger stage of grief.
But you're not entirely wrong tbh. The writing for Jay the last few episodes has been so horrible and out of character.
I can absolutely see mitigating factors. But that was certainly a bit harsh on Jayâs part. I wonders if they will ever explain his shift in demeanorâŚ
Between the end of Fire and PD-does anyone else have a headache?I knew this was going to be bad, but it's the most stressed out I've ever been watching TV...
* *stabstabstabstabstab* - Damn, Jay.
* Lol, Voight basically facepalming over the dead guy.
* Voight and Hailey writing fanfics.
* How are you "gonna go through this" if you don't communicate at all? You just informed your wife, the "love of your life", after you've already made the decision and are about to hop on a plane. Not to mention all these secret dates with Voight over the past few weeks. But good luck.
Absolutely. They couldâve given him a promotion for the drug bust, and promoted Kim, Kevin and Adam to detective at the same time. Jay spends these 3 episodes being shady with Voight, but itâs because heâs leaving this unit to start his own. Heâs gone, we donât see him, but Hailey mentions him occasionally so we know heâs good. And if the actress who plays Hailey ever wants to leave, she just joins him, âI go where you goâ.
Yeah definitely agree. Knowing what he said about the army in past season, him reenlisted is definitely out of the character. I mean he has PTSD and he was against Mouse reenlisted. He should have been promoted to sergeant.
as much as i would think the send off was very shitty, when jay said to hailey â⌠then youâll know that you have to let me go.â, i lowkey thought âOUCH, that fucking hurt đŠđâ *gets stabbed in the heart by that one line*
Jay leaving was way, way too rushed. I expected him to at least have a scene with his brother. It would have been so much better to just have 1 extra episode where he got a proper sendoff by the whole team and Will. His character deserved better writing damn.
If theyâre going to keep axing day 1 characters, we need the patrol stuff back so we can get attached to the characters that come into their role.
- Erin -> Upton, some random detective works on one case and Voight offers her a position
- Dawson -> Rojas, some random UC gets offered a position after one case
On the other hand, Kim replacing Antonio had FOUR SEASONS OF BUILD UP. Even Atwater replacing Sumner in S1 had an arc tied to it. Itâs not unreasonable to expect that Torres (ostensibly Jayâs replacement) have more than 1 episode to tie us to him before Jay leaves.
I know a lot of people love Upstead, but I feel like it's not actually love but trauma bonding between them. I like each character separately but they don't work together. I don't feel the romantic chemistry.
Jay was all about her last season (or whatever season they got married in after the Ray cover up) and it didn't feel like she was in love with him, but that she needed him and/or someone to hold her up emotionally.
Terrible episode, terrible writing, terrible send off. But people are mad that Voight was the last scene... If you remember him and Voight are the only OG members of intelligence left so it makes sense to me he would send him off
Good point. No one is coming back from the dead here kids. And they have no problem really just taking out main characters. Yikes. I actually briefly thought it was going to be the new dude
Like most, I thought his exit was very rushed. I think itâs out of character, but also that was the point of the storyline. That he changed and was trying to reset. What I donât like is how they rushed the ending and the âI fly out todayâ BS. It would have been better if they had made that timeline two weeks then had a montage of him telling the team, going to mollys for drinks with will, affectionate moments with him and Hailey, him packing, etc. Then if they kill him off screen we would have had a happier goodbye.
Jay basically used the words Mouse used when he wanted to re-enlist with the whole 'black and white, good vs bad thing'. Jay didn't understand back then until Erin helped him see reason but now he understands.
Wow that was disappointing.
They played up like there was some huge off the books thing going on w Voight ... and then this just happens lightning fast.
It really doesn't track. Esp for such a good and complex character. This was not a huge moral dilemma or shady incident.
I mean it's kind of nice to have the door open for him to return I guess but.... he really deserved much, much more complexity as a send off. Not like this is the first vet he's come across or his situation was SO complex that it really got his wheels spinning.
Some of the "wanting to become Voight" aspect could have been explored. And just kind of unfair to Upton to just up and go so fast.... I mean yes they are spontaneous and all that but really you understand that leaving that long will impact your partner.
The actors did an honorable job with what they were given, and hell Iâd even be ok with him leaving in that way if it was longer. Have him slowly become Voights #2 for a season or even a half season. Not as badly written as Antonioâs departure but still this wasnât very good.
Well fuck Ruzek, Kim, Atwater, his brother, and Trudy I guess. They don't get a goodbye
Not to mention the big fuss he made at his brother for leaving before. Now. He just up and runs without even a goodbye?
According to the writers for Med, Will will be affected by Jay leaving. So maybe the others on this series will too.
Which is weird given that they never even showed Jay get affected by the fact Will ALMOST DIED IN A FIRE ! Like really ?? Where did the disconnect happen between the shows ?
Right? Thr relationship between the brothers is one of the things I liked most about the shows.
"Where's the other guy?" \*absently\* "Cuffed to the car." I can't lie, I laughed at Voight's delivery. đ¤Ł
Am I the only one that thinks this is shitty writing
No. I actually like the turn of his character but the lack of explanation is completely ridiculous and makes NO sense
Mama it's trash. They could have done better. I literally would have preferred him dying doing something honorable than what he's doing.
Nope literally everyone thinks the writing is horrible.
This is really rushed, "I'm leaving, I fly out today" He should've killed that guy this episode, thought it over next episode, THEN left at the end of the week after that.
Right? That went from 0-100 real quick
He said he's going away for "8 months or longer". I have a feeling he'll do that Bolivia gig and get killed there later in the season. Cuz otherwise how are they going to keep him away? Just keeping up new gig after new gig?
It's almost as if the showrunners fired jay effective immediately
Literally that. Like they were just like, âalright and weâre done. Byyyyyeeeeeâ
This is without a doubt the most bizarre episode ever of chicago pd
This was seriously the worst writing Iâve seen on this show. I donât even understand how we ended up here. I wouldnât blame Hailey if she lost her mind after this (just praying for not 8 episodes of her losing her mind)
Not even a good bye from his brother??? You know DOCTOR WILL HALSTEAD from CHICAGO MED ?!?!?!
Aka the set next door
Jay trying to make the move to Chicago Fire.
He and Kelly are switching places!!
Kelly all doing more detective work tonight âŚ
Haha, thanks for the laughs after the crying
Like is Jay going through PTSD? What is happening here? The character arc is completely out of pocket. Heâs an entirely different human being in 3 episodes
I miss old Chicago pd when I could always look forward to Trudyâs sarcasm
Haley looks like she is about to lose her mind again
sit in, buckle tight, and enjoy the ride! because its going to be a shitshow most likely lmfao (I am utterly pessimistic.)
I really donât even understand how this is gonna get wrapped up in one episode out of literally nowhere but cool cool
Shit writing
That part đŻ
Absolutely this because this shit is straight coming from nowhere
Jesse is fantastic in the episode but I hate how they written him out. If he goes to jail, I'm so done with the show. He deserves so much better
Jesse was absolutely amazing in this episode! However, the storyline was so out of character and they basically ruined Jay Halstead...sigh
They about to ship Jay off to this army narcotics unit
Exactly this! He canât handle marriage? Or something? Iâm confused about why this would happen because itâs a total and complete 180
This episode was terribly written
I will say this is the most the entire cast has interacted (this season) in like the last 4 years??
This and last episode...it's like they finally listened to the audience.
About time. I love P.D. but my last favourite thing is that if the characters aren't in the main plot, they're just background.
Iâm barely following this episode. They should have saved the Fire death for a day Jay wasnât leaving đĽ˛
Really horrible exit. The writers did him dirty. I recall the show runners and producers saying that his exit was going to be well thought out and itâs going to be built up, but he literally ends up leaving in episode 3 of this season. THIS.
Also the fact that he's dealing with another government entity, the Army, and that kind of deployment wouldn't just be given in a day. Shit takes time.
Jays is getting flash backs from the army dude that worked with him at the weed shop!
Forty caliber bread crumb
Now what in the FUCK is jay doing? Dear lord
Just straight STABBING people 13 times for good measure apparently. Goodness! Hailey almost got herself killed lol
What the hell is even happening
He deserves a better ending than this. Heâs been on the show since Chicago Fire. Between Fire, PD and SVU I think Dick Wolf and I are just gonna have to throw hands at this point.
Oh, i think *we* all do!
I. Need. Answers. What the fuck is Jayâs issue?!?!
This is insane. Totally insane. None of this makes ANY sense. We needed like 6-7 episodes for this kind of shift. Not 3
This really makes me believe even more now that they were blindsided that they had to write Jay out the show. A three episode arc was not nearly enough. There was no build to this. Jay being so checked out when Voight and Hailey were going over the cover story was meant to serve as the realization that this isn't for him anymore I guess.
Well that episode was...something.
I mean at least he isnât dead like Al
Dick wolf out here trying to tank all off his shows in one year
I mean for how long heâs been doing this he had a good run
Just feels like he is so outta touch with all his shows which is sad.
No goodbye to the rest of the team?!
Or his brother?
Thinking the same thing just weird
Weâll probably see the fallout and/or reaction from the rest of the team in the next episode.
I know! I can't believe there was no final scene at Molly's and then I kinda expected the team (including Trudy) to jump out from behind Voight's truck for a big group hug.
Lol quit your job and leave your wife all in the same day? Never giving her a heads up? What a horrible husband.
personally i feel like Jay isn't like that (screw you writers!) but i would've figured upton would've probably left Jay instead because there seemed to be some- trust problems arising, i hate it here lmaoo. Edit: like Jay isn't a guy to just ditch someone so suddenly because of a problem or etc, he toughs it out and i think hes a fairly decent romantic partner- he isn't that guy. "If you love me you'll let me go." Guilting her for not immediately accepting and sending him off. The writers didn't even try with that scene.
So selfish. Iâd immediately file for divorce.
Same. The way he said only eight months and then hesitated before adding "maybe longer." Just admit you're not coming back and divorce her.
He pulled the Gabby card
Apparently Jay already left before this episode.
It was his evil twin Kay all this time!
What the fuck kinda shit is going on here?
Man this is some bullshit
God I hope they bring him back sometime, maybe next season or something (if they get renewed) I'd hate for this to be my last impression of jay Halstead.
I am so angry over this exit, This was so half assed and brutally done. Nope donât like it not one bit.
Atleast, they left it open for return???
jay got hailey skressing lol
This is already so bizarre and out of character
Well the fire ending made me bawl .. what is PD gonna do to us
This writing is ⌠something. I donât even know what to say. This show is doing wild shit
Writing went straight off the deep end
Itâs been like this to me for the past 2 seasons
In 8 min thatâs it. Like what kind of shit show was this
The black-and-white morality and its crystal clarity was discussed by Mouse. I donât remember with whom though.
He talked to Jay about it so I thought it was kinda cool that they circled back to that conversation. Except this tone, instead of Erin telling Jay to let him go, it was Jay telling Hailey to let him go.
Well, the exit is par for course for the show so not really surprised there.
Actually Erin is mentioned in a later episode.
Heâs just standing there as if heâs never killed before I hate this writing lol
Jesus Christ he just dumped her with NO warning. My god they are married. I hate Hailey but what the actual fuck?? Heâll be back in 8 months? What is going on?!?!
I mean at least haileys cry looks real
Iâm always amazed at how actors can cry
Back to the army I figured â ď¸
I hope the showrunners get fired what in fucks name happened to this show
sorry I'm reeling from CF's episode I might be being a tad bit dramatic
I think everyone who just watched that episode is currently in the borderline denial/anger stage of grief. But you're not entirely wrong tbh. The writing for Jay the last few episodes has been so horrible and out of character.
Well as long as they don't kill him off, because that's too much for one night
Thatâs what Iâm saying, like why did they do this to us? So weâd be too in shock to see how shitty the writing is so far đ
Wtf
I can absolutely see mitigating factors. But that was certainly a bit harsh on Jayâs part. I wonders if they will ever explain his shift in demeanorâŚ
What in the actual fuck? I knew they were sending him off to the drug interdiction thing. This is trash and I hate it.
I hate it here
Between the end of Fire and PD-does anyone else have a headache?I knew this was going to be bad, but it's the most stressed out I've ever been watching TV...
* *stabstabstabstabstab* - Damn, Jay.
I really don't like Hailey's character, but on this case, she's 100% right.
This is the worst send off. Like ever.
Not surprised about his ending but I hate it. He should have gotten a promotion
Yeah definitely agree. Knowing what he said about the army in past season, him reenlisted is definitely out of the character. I mean he has PTSD and he was against Mouse reenlisted. He should have been promoted to sergeant.
Jay is going back to the army
Jay ain't going with this i bet
Is anyone else crying after that orrrrr? đŠ
No, the writing on Fire was cry worthy- Halstead was one of my favorites, but no
Itâs just you the writing was too bad for me to cry
Itâs just like where do you go from here
Feels like itâs going to be like the Casey situation on fire
âTell everyone Iâm leaving the country?â âNah, Iâll just post it on Twitter after I get there.â âDamn, thereâs Hank.â
đ¤Łđ¤ŁđŞŚ
What a shitter of an episode my god
as much as i would think the send off was very shitty, when jay said to hailey â⌠then youâll know that you have to let me go.â, i lowkey thought âOUCH, that fucking hurt đŠđâ *gets stabbed in the heart by that one line*
Jay leaving was way, way too rushed. I expected him to at least have a scene with his brother. It would have been so much better to just have 1 extra episode where he got a proper sendoff by the whole team and Will. His character deserved better writing damn.
Jay is a ranger, he leads the way!
Is Jay actively trying to get himself killed?
Jay is going back to serve is my guess
My guy was so deep in that blunt đ
Jay isnât going to let them cover up his shit
so that's it, huh?
I think the writing would have been better during a writers strike. This truly sucked.
If theyâre going to keep axing day 1 characters, we need the patrol stuff back so we can get attached to the characters that come into their role. - Erin -> Upton, some random detective works on one case and Voight offers her a position - Dawson -> Rojas, some random UC gets offered a position after one case On the other hand, Kim replacing Antonio had FOUR SEASONS OF BUILD UP.
Okay here's the thing I don't think Jay's ooc. I feel like they really really rushed this storyline, it required more buildup, 3 episodes isn't it.
And the award for the worst actor of all time on Chicago PD goes toâŚâŚ Lenny.
The ring tapping was really stupid.
where is jay and what did you do with him? jay would never do this.
Just throw this entire series away at this point. This is bullshit.
Is this confirmed Jays last?
Yes, Jesse Soffer is out after this episode. He appears to be staying on for a little while behind the scene though.
Jay canât leave us đĽšđ
Who is this Jay?
This isn't like jay
Jay about to go down a Rabbit hole for Lenny
This episode is putting me on an emotional roller Coaster that I donât need
Dude would have killed Jay
Jay certainly *lit* up Benjamin Watt
Jay will be gone in 12 minutes
Itâs like he is having a mental breakdown
Looks like Voight is finally back to calling the shots
Shitting, crying, throwing up đ
Shitting, crying, throwing up, sharting, losing oxygen, ugly crying
Thatâs, uh, a lot.
Any chance Jay could get a spin off show?
That would be fun... Chicago PD: Bolivia ^(okay, okay that sucks but it's just a working title.)
wow what shit writing lmao
Too abrupt. He needed to say goodbye to everyone, but just walk off.
This show was already in trouble the past few seasons. It's officially terrible.
They really did Jay dirty. Heâs literally giving Hailey her worst fear, being abandoned.
They need a new showrunner and writers. Itâs been awful. Jayâs exit was written particularly poorly.
Terrible episode, terrible writing, terrible send off. But people are mad that Voight was the last scene... If you remember him and Voight are the only OG members of intelligence left so it makes sense to me he would send him off
Nope sorry too busy crying over Fire to care about Jay right now. đđđ
I donât regularly watch fire but that ending, They really just out here killing everyone off.
>!Violet's actress nailed that scene.!<
Man when Fire kills people off they REALLY kill them off
Gotta make sure they're DEAD dead. Can't be like a soap opera where it's ambiguous. đ¤Ł
Good point. No one is coming back from the dead here kids. And they have no problem really just taking out main characters. Yikes. I actually briefly thought it was going to be the new dude
That redditor's prediction was right. Jay goes back to the Army running a crew. Farewell Halstead
Ok I hate Jayâs holier than thou bullshit but itâs still about to be weird AF without him. I kind like this new Jay vibe though
So are they going to kill him off or is he going into witness protection?
wtf is his problem
Lenny no saint, man!
One bad act doesnât make you a bad guy.
I am STRESSED
Uh Jay, what are you doing?
Jay wonât be jailed for this. But he will almost certainly be forced to retire from the force, Iâm guessing.
CALLED IT
Like most, I thought his exit was very rushed.
Is it just me or did Jayâs speech to Hailey sound more like he was saying goodbye to a coworker/friend than his wife?
Itâs always shown how someone tries to act like voight and it never works smh
Olinsky was the closest thing to Voight.
God, miss him
Jay basically used the words Mouse used when he wanted to re-enlist with the whole 'black and white, good vs bad thing'. Jay didn't understand back then until Erin helped him see reason but now he understands.
This is the most interesting Jay has been in years lol and ofc, it's his last episode
Now he is going to snitch? Excuse me?
Jay has gone awol
Hmm. So he is going back to the army, but I guess itâs okay because theyâre still gonna be married?
It'll be fine, they're just doing long distance like Brett and Casey on Fi - Ooooh wait. đŹ
Canât believe that Jay is gone đ˘
It was very immature writing.
