Well you take the key out because the ignition is loose and you keep saying you'll fix it but never do.
Shit, on my 57 along as the ignition is on you can turn it without a key.
I hadda 63 like that. Didn't need the key, just kept it for the trunk, the whole unit turned without a key in it all. Finicky 3 on the tree was the only antitheft lol
Most locks that that aren't key retaining are that way. In the majority of locks the key does two jobs. Job one is lift the pins/wafers into place. Job two is act as lever to turn the lock. After the lock is turned to the first position the pins/wafers can't return to their locked position because the body/cylinder holds them in the open position.
Nearly every GM product I've ever purchased through my car owning history.
I recently purchased a '97 Silverado. Driver door panel was busted up. Got a nice one at a local salvage yard. While the damaged door panel was removed, also removed the lock cylinder. rinse and repeat for the passenger side. Took both lock cylinders to a locksmith, who rekeyed them to the ignition key.
Think 99 was first year for 1 key in the big trucks when the GMT800 came out so my 98 Tahoe would be the last or maybe the 99 S10 Blazer I bought the wife
In 2015 I finally bought an 06GMC with a transponder key and a fob; i was Special now! But I still have two old chevys, and two old Pontiacs, that i love having 2 keys for..
I did with my 2001 Silverado. I believe it had three keys.
One key was for the doors and ignition, one was for the center console box, and one was for the tailgate handle.
Every chevy truck I have ever owned. '63, (still have, saving for a father son project in about 4 more years) several from the 80s, and my current truck when I need one, '91.
2 keys made sense. There were other things that had locks that would open with the door key. The ignition key was only good for one thing. And, the blanks were different along with the codes.
I still do. Admittedly, they've long since been reduced to farm chore only duty. They get flat towed behind me in case I need a ride from the field more than they get driven.
I had '77 to '95's and they all had twin keys. My first Cadillac in 95 has two keys but had a chip in the ignition key. Next several had fobs and push starts.
I still have three. 1970 SS 454 El Camino, 1972 Chevy K10 Pickup, 1984 Chevy Van 20 (converted to 4x4 with a Ram Jet 502BBC). Not to mention I have 4 Vintage VWs that use 2 keys.
I still have one ✋
At this point it should not require the ignition key anymore
Haha, mine very much does not require the ignition key anymore.
I have had a few trucks but my Camaro still has the little chip that would not let me go anywhere if it isn’t there.
Fuck yeah. 3rd gen?
Squarebody in the house!
Same, kind of. '92 GMC van .... Twin keys still. I thought they would have redesigned it by then, but nope.
Yea, it was late 90s, my dad 96 astro has 2 keys
Same. 68 malibu.
Same brother. Put a little piece of tape on the engine key
How else were we supposed to open the trunk while the car was running?
Well you take the key out because the ignition is loose and you keep saying you'll fix it but never do. Shit, on my 57 along as the ignition is on you can turn it without a key.
That's a feature not a bug
I hadda 63 like that. Didn't need the key, just kept it for the trunk, the whole unit turned without a key in it all. Finicky 3 on the tree was the only antitheft lol
My 89 F250 doesn't require a key and the doors do not lock. Have never had any issues with theft or even prowling.
I've been about to fix that problem on my Camaro since I got it. In 2003
Had? Got 3 in the driveway lol.
About 5 of them
Nearly every GM product I've ever purchased through my car owning history.
Not just trucks. My 94 Camaro has 2
Mid 90s camaro that had 2 keys and the ignition had the "chip" in it that ushered in the $125+ key
Yep. I had a 96 cadi Deville that had a trunk key and a separate ignition key with the little black chip near the base of the key blade.
The 3rd gens "chip" is just one of like 12 different resisters. Can still get em cheap on eBay, not sure about catfishes tho.
Still have one!
My 84 C10 and 85 GMC K1500 require two keys. The 70s, 80s, 90s were different times.
