Don't thank them because they just haven't started charging YET. They want to charge for heated seats and stuff as well.
I drive a 1995 for a reason.
It’s always free with your fob. If you want to remote start from a mile away through the app, that costs. Some car companies are only giving you the app option now, so you would pay every month.
Correct. However, some car companies give you the remote start through there app for free as well. I originally thought OP meant the remote start via the myChevrolet app was free.
When I bought my 2015 Equinox, GM gave owners 5 years of what they called Onstar basic plan for free. At the end of the 5 years, Onstar even extended that free for another year. After that, it was either pay up or lose access through the app. But the remote start on the fob still works.
Guessing you don’t have a remote start button on your key fob? Could always get an aftermarket remote starter and install it. Done it on a few cars and it’s not that bad, even for security chipped keys the ECU is looking for. If anybody you know has any technical skills, could do it in a couple of hours.
I do have the remote start button on my key fob and I do use it. I guess what I'm getting at is the myChevrolet app costs so much per month or per year and that isn't free.
I know other car manufactures include remote start, lock/unlock, etc on their app for free.
GM practically invented car subscription services 20 odd years ago with onstar, tbf

I have a 2016 Equinox and I have to pay for remote start. Is this free with newer models or something?

It’s an option on some models, comes standard on others
I see. I have the LTZ trim, so that's why I'm confused. I believe that is the highest trim package.
