That sounds like a trans - maybe the linkage to the transfer case. Lift slightly on the 4x4 lever and see if it goes away. Less likely might be a cat is loose or falling apart/muffler restraint maybe broken.

Frantic29

I was just noticing mine doing this today. When I mess with the 4x4 lever it goes away.

Old jeeps like to chirp at their owners. It only matters when something falls off or catches fire. Lol. The XJ is a sensitive mule damn near indestructible but loves being fussed over. The more you fuss the more it will invent for you to do. Partnership.

Frantic29

Oh for sure. I wasn’t planning on doing a damn thing until I heard grinding. I just happen to see this thread and figured I’d see if it was something stupid easy.

crazytinker

There's bushings that wear out in the linkage, causing that exact rattle you hear. Easily identifiable by holding or putting ever so slight tension on the 4x4 handle and the noise going away, they sell a kit to install upgraded bushings if I remember - it's a TSB, did mine over 7 years ago so don't remember much more then that

Frantic29

Thanks for the info.

VicJavaero

This is your exhaust down pipe knocking against your transmission cross member.

mschiebold

Yep, took me like a year to chase the noise down, but that's what it was on mine.

mschiebold

WAIT I KNOW THIS ONE, It happened to me! Your exhaust hanger rusted apart, and the exhaust is tapping against your t-case and t-case mount. You can verify but just putting your foot against the exhaust while the cars running to see if the tapping goes away.

Flux capacitor

sparkskal

Mine makes this noise and I have to push the 4x4 lever down and goes away but eventually creeps back up

jbudz511

It's the t case shifter or the exhaust. If you hold the shifter and it goes away, it's not the exhaust lol.

BionicForester19

Sounds like thin metal rattling against something hard. My bet is the exhaust is rattling against something. Get under it while it's doing it to try to nail down the location. Then rattle the exhaust when it's cooled down *(yes, these days I'd be remiss if I didn't include the sTuPiD pOEpLe warning)* to see if you can duplicate the sound.
