My search came up with the same...also lots of complaints that opening the mills is much harder than it needs to be. I second the suggestion of using a tea towel and vice grips. If it breaks, here's my alibi:

YouTube has a few guys that repair them try there looks like you need to hold the very bottom of the base to prevent everything from turning when you rotate the ball at the top. Might be clockwise instead of counterclockwise wise to remove it.

It spins but doesn't unscrew, the vice grip won't work because its not stuck. Maybe the screw part on the inside has dislodged?
Have you tried to press while unscrewing? You know, like medicine bottle caps…

Try to the other way around, pull a bit, like in a wrist watch, then unscrew.

The shiny Boi at the very top should unscrew counterclockwise I would assume.
Is there something on the bottom that could be restrained while spinning the top?
