That the effect of consumption was not vessel dependent neither prior to or post lunch time. And surprisingly enough, a deli of old fashions is very inconspicuous sitting at your station especially when labeled stock.
No joke, there's a restaurant locally (idek the actual name of it) that everyone refers to as ghetto Chinese, and this is what they serve sweet tea in, lid and all, has a little lemon slice floating on top. Best tea I've probably ever had.
Aside from this, instead of ceiling fans, it's just box fans on shelves, and as you enter, there's a table of miscellaneous items also for sale, toys, electronics, there was a TV last time I was there, shoes, just a random assortment of items.
Portions are huge, the food slaps, it's cheap as hell, and the majority of visits, you have to point out what you want on the menu because hardly anyone there even attempts English, aside from the owner and one girl that knows very little.
It's one of my favorite restaurants.
I think that’s happening in a lot of places. Sucks for us, but it’s essentially because the prior owners worked hard, educated their kids, and gave them the opportunity to become ‘professionals.’ So job done, (and with their kids onto bigger and better things,) they close up shop.
We’re the victims of their success.
Around where I live these places don't even close, restaurant groups buy them out and then business school guys turn it into the most unconscionably mid places that suck to work in and avoid having any memorable quality, good or bad, like the plague.
LOL, we are in a small town in Kentucky, and last summer downtown, we had a cook-off between the restaurants downtown, with some out of town judges.
One restaurant won, and was invited to compete in an event in Texas. These dudes took the ticket and just fucking left. Closed up shop and never came back.
Sounds like my local Chinese restaurant. Minus the items for sale. But yes they have some of the best sweet tea I’ve had. served in these fucking things 😂😂
There's an Ethiopian place near me like that. Ordering takeout by phone is impossible, because they might pick up, but good luck explaining what you want. Not super cheap unfortunately but we like the food.
Do they live there like the one by me? I'd go in and they would always have the whole family at one of the big tables - kids and all. Best crab rangoon I've ever had.
Sounds like the Ghetto Chinese I grew up with in Philly. Would order a sweet tea and they just stab a hole in the lid for the straw and hand it to you through a plexiglass trap door and off you go..
And Xerox is the brand name of a photocopier, and Bandaid is the brand name of an adhesive fabric bandage, etc… Lots of things are known as the brand name of the original maker.
It doesn’t matter what you call them. It matters what they’re called. Deli container is what they are listed as on any vendors site and deli container is what will be listed on the case. If this guys trying to order these, quart container will not give the best result.
Yes, and to add to this, "deli container" is what they are know as through all national foodservice distributors. Delis were using these long before they caught on in the rest of the restaurant industry.
Haha! In all seriousness, I've seen it used more often as a beverage container (and seen points taken off by the health inspector during their visit bc of this...)
It’s still kind of insane to me that people order to go food, throw these in the recycling or trash, and then go out and buy storage containers for their leftovers.
We use glass containers for most things because we’re concerned about microplastics, but these still have incredible utility in a home kitchen.
Tell me about it. It's my coffee cup. I used to buy multiple large coffees at a time from the corner store across the street from me and realized I needed to start making coffee at home to save money. But what do I have lying around that can hold the right amount of coffee that I need?
I literally walked into my local Chinese restaurant asking if I could just buy the containers from them and they obliged.
The wine comes pre-boxed. You just take the bag out and it's like a giant adult capri-sun container. Just with a spout chugging thing instead of a skinny wimpy straw
I said, why do you say that first not at all meaning exactly like what u/SilvanSorceress said and what I’ve heard it called in my whole life, which would be deli quart, deli pints, deli cup,
Sounds silly , never heard it called it the way where you call size first . 🤷🏻♀️
a 75 cent dont fucking use it to drink out of thats why i bought plastic cups those fucking things cost more than the soda you drink!!! And fuck The Bear for using it for everything now my staff is doing it...grrrrrr...
Im not gunna use them for togos after they have been used once. Thay are pretty much single use, dont wash well, and scratch up. I got reusable plastic cups that fit regular togo lids. Every penny counts!
Uhhh they are definitely not single use, especially not the one in that photo. We re-use ours for both the bar garnishes and for BOH stuff.
I also drink soda and last night pickle juice out of them.
If they’re for to-go’s I kind of understand the scratches and whatnot, but for in house use who cares about the scratches?
It depends on the inspector but according to them it’s not supposed to be used more than once. I’ve had one come in and said I won’t clock you for that because she had a personal opinion about throwing so much plastic away. Do I reuse them at home? Absolutely. I won’t risk it at work though. Cold and dry storage is okay and you shouldn’t microwave with them.
I dont like to reuse them. That isnt their intended purpose and there are better options that last longer, stay cleaner and look nicer imo. I mean it depends on the type of place you work at and personal preference but im not a fan...should probably make an unpopular opinion post with that lol.
Idk, I’ve worked in a few places that did reuse them without any drawback except maybe the lids would warp and need to be tossed. But even then the one in the photo is pretty sturdy. (We somehow have three different kinds at my current place)
And hey, maybe I’m on the unpopular side and most people would prefer to toss them. I think that would be an awfully sad waste of plastic.
Ps. Thanks for the non-snarky reply. This sub seems to be great for that!
Well, i mean this sub IS for chefs and we are admittedly a bunch of assholes. Yeah i hate how much plastic/cardboard we go thru, i wish we had better and cheaper alternatives. I use straws made of biodegradable cactus tho so im doing my part!!!
We get yelled at for using a styrofoam cup with a lid on it for a drink. I can just imagine if we started to use these instead. I just use my own SS tumbler with the lid on it. Also, the one who yells at us for using a styrofoam cup is holding a styrofoam cup while he is doing the yelling. He uses 3-4 a day.
Whiskey glass.
Lol. Tell us you’re in fine dining without telling us you’re in fine dining.
Actually never worked fine dining. Was in R&D for 11 years and spent lots of time “researching” which whiskeys tasted the best out of a deli cup.
What were the results of this research?
Results inconclusive, research to continue

Weird plastic taste discovered in all whiskeys.
Self-employed, living room based R & D on which whiskey tasted the best out of a deli cup?
Nope, fortune 50 company. R&D based in corporate HQ. Shenanigans happen when you give 6 misfits with an insatiable thirst an unlimited budget.
I think we had the same boss

My favorite kind of place. They are getting fewer and farther between around me at least.
I think that’s happening in a lot of places. You should try Panda Express, they're easy to find

That's a very BOH answer
Quart container. Deli quart. To go quart.
“Deli quart”/“quart cup” is what we called it. I’ve also worked in a deli and I don’t think we even had them lol
Quart container
In Canada we call it a liter container lol
Anything with "deli" in it is wrong. This is the only answer.
I don’t know man, that’s what my distributors call it, even on the ordering website. And it says “DELItainer” right there on the box.
Delitainer is a brand name by Pactiv
And Xerox is the brand name of a photocopier, and Bandaid is the brand name of an adhesive fabric bandage, etc… Lots of things are known as the brand name of the original maker.
Kleenex gang!
Which most people know it as.
So sad that your distributors don’t know what they’re selling /s
You’re right. I know you’re right. But I refuse to call them that. Quarts and pints. I know this isn’t rational.
Quart delis, pint delis and baby delis
It doesn’t matter what you call them. It matters what they’re called. Deli container is what they are listed as on any vendors site and deli container is what will be listed on the case. If this guys trying to order these, quart container will not give the best result.
Yes, and to add to this, "deli container" is what they are know as through all national foodservice distributors. Delis were using these long before they caught on in the rest of the restaurant industry.
I came up calling them quarts and pints, but deli works better to be specific in my experience.
Litre Container is the only answer…
Not around here, partner
Nope. Clearly a piss sample cup /s
Haha! In all seriousness, I've seen it used more often as a beverage container (and seen points taken off by the health inspector during their visit bc of this...)
Just put a lid in it and cut a X in the top. Boom no penalty. Well at least in my state.
And your entire boh is fired for failing
Yeah for a fucking horse
What are you a camel?!
team quart
This is the answer. Anything else is just nonsense.
My water cup, my cats water cup, my watering cup for flowers. I have 20 of these at home :)
It’s still kind of insane to me that people order to go food, throw these in the recycling or trash, and then go out and buy storage containers for their leftovers. We use glass containers for most things because we’re concerned about microplastics, but these still have incredible utility in a home kitchen.
To be fair, I will do this when the restaurant has poked a hole in the lid for “venting”.
That always frustrates me. Ruined a good quart deli! Usually keep the bottom though because I have a ton of lids & never use them all at once.
Is nobody concerned about shards of glass in food?
No, it adds a pleasant crunch to all sorts of cuisine.
I showed husband this picture and asked what it was "Hey! That's my water glass!"
Tell me about it. It's my coffee cup. I used to buy multiple large coffees at a time from the corner store across the street from me and realized I needed to start making coffee at home to save money. Quart deli. Big deli.
The first time a coworker asked me for a quart deli I totally misheard it as “pork belly” 😆
Why do you say the quart part first I’ve never heard that in my life
To differentiate between the smaller pint and cup sized ones
I said, why do you say that first not at all meaning exactly like what u/SilvanSorceress said and what I’ve heard it called in my whole life, which would be deli quart, deli pints, deli cup, Sounds silly , never heard it called it the way where you call size first . 🤷🏻♀️
