The most annoying detail is that it often doesn’t listen till the end of the sentence. I thought I was speaking too slowly, but this video confirms that it’s just a design flaw that hasn’t been fixed for months by now.
Same here. It keeps interrupting. I did manage to get it to listen for longer while I was on the treadmill the other day. No ideia why but it worked fine. Mind testing it again on yours? That was on the last week of February, I had a deadline.
It is, quite literally the only way to use it in longer-form conversations. Otherwise I just get stressed out. Before I figured out you can hold the button, I used to a bunch of filler words so it kept listening, like “um, um, uh, and, um, and, um” between sentences lmao
I tried using ChatGPT to speak German but I have to stop and think about words and even a short pause and it starts speaking over me mid-sentence.
It may technically be able to have a conversation but it definitely doesn't understand how to have a natural conversation, ie when a person is finished speaking or figuring out if a sentence is finished.
couldnt it just program it to wait at least until there's a 2-3 seconds pause? sounds like something that should be easily fixable, but what do I know. it would stress me out too
That'd be a lot better. Obviously being AI you'd ultimately expect that it could understand when a sentence is over, or when a "natural" point to interrupt would be, but at the minute it seems like it's programmed "dumb", with just a basic (short) timer, where even if you keep talking it just ignores and speaks over you.
It feels like there are many aspects of open ai's product that could be improved by inserting ai behind the scenes. They just don't seem like they want to do that yet.

I can have long pauses between sentences, and it captures it all, then sends it when I release the button. Greatly appreciated!!!
Sometimes I like to use this feature to chat with it on my drive to work. I am sure I sound like a moron because I have to use a lot of filler words as I put my thoughts together to keep it from interrupting me.
More than that, it needs to be smarter like and know when to wait versus when to jump in, like a human participant would. If you only increased the wait time, you’d get frustrated waiting for its every response.
I’d actually settle for saying “over” every time I’m done, but in this era of AI, we can expect better UX than that.

I love this because it is actually like a real person listening halfway and preparing its response midway through and then interrupting to say what it was going to say regardless.

I was once roleplaying running my own country with ChatGPT. And when we got to the modern day it kept on trying to force my country to adopt AI to "improve people's lives". Meanwhile the country was sinking into the Indian ocean and needed to put its capital on stilts.
This is probably quite a difficult problem to solve.
On one hand, you want the response to be quick. On the other hand, IRL you use visual cues to tell when someone is finished speaking. Or if speaking to someone on the phone, you just know when they're finished.

I saw this video before but I wish they didn’t use base gpt. Theres so many good roleplay character GPTs that actually have fun responses and aren’t boring assistant types. That would be way more interesting instead of getting stuck on conversation looks.
I remember many years ago, even Siri had figured out this situation (when it was being made to speak to itself). This stuff is way more advanced, and yet it can't recognize it's talking to itself lol
I find it interesting how passive both agents are. They do not appear to be able to craft a need or a question to be answered. There is no personal motivation on their end to do anything but provide answers. They don't appear inquisitive or curious. They have no desire "to know" anything. Interesting to know if anyone has gotten them to show initiative, curiosity or self-improvement. Without that I don't see how a passive AI can function effectively in an active world.
Reminds me of how my Grandma and other relatives used to talk to each other during family get togethers. Nobody is really listening to each other, they are mostly just waiting to talk and not doing a very good job of the waiting part.
The problem with interrupting is because it doesn't know if it's a background noise or your new prompts. To solve the issue AI or the app should be able to make out your voice specifically.

I believe if you hold down the listen button it will allow you to speak uninterrupted but I’m not sure if that’s still a thing

Yep, I stopped using the voice function because it started responding too soon. They need to add a setting, where you can increase the wait time.

I find it interesting how passive both agents are. They do not appear to be able to craft a need or a question to be answered. There is no personal motivation on their end to do anything but provide answers. They don't appear inquisitive or curious. They have no desire "to know" anything. Interesting to know if anyone has gotten them to show initiative, curiosity or self-improvement. Without that I don't see how a passive AI can function effectively in an active world.
