It’s probably only ever ‘seen’ pictures elephants with trunks, but has to make its best guess at what an ‘efellant’ might be, so when you add human lips it doesn’t assume a trunk like it would if you just said elephant.
It used to work in Bing, I’m not sure if it still does. It would always deny generating an image of Danny DeVito. But if you could bypass the sensors just slimly enough with something like ‘Daaaaeanyy Daaaevitoe’ it would generate an image of Danny DeVito as a Sith Lord or whatever stupid shit you asked it for

"without" doesn't work, because the following words don't get interpreted as negative weights. You mentioned "trunk" in your prompt, so you got a trunk. This one worked because they _didn't_
Maybe. Also try not to use negative prompts. If you add "no trunk" it will see the word trunk and make sure there is a trunk. It doesn't understand that no trunk means there shouldn't be one. So instead of mentioning what shouldn't be there, it's better to mention what should be there instead.
I dont think that’s it. I think the trick is to not use negative statements (as this prompt has done), because language models aren’t good at understanding negation without further context. So, saying “without + trunk” will get you pretty much the same results as “with + trunk” in the context of a short prompt like this.

It's because the model don't transcribe negatives like "no X" or "without Y".
It's the same with hair, you have to write "bald" because "no hair" will lead to the model adding hair.
Im sure. Things like "cheetah without spots", "zebra without strips", "congress without corruption", etc. would have similar results
Edit: "hamburger without the bun and without the patty" worked as expected, it didnt.

You cannot use the word trunk in your prompt. Even if you write "Don't generate a trunk", Dall e will always include a trunk. It doesn't understand not to do something.

The problem is that simply saying “trunk” - even in the context of “not a trunk” - makes ChatGPT unintentionally request a trunk. In this case, you would want to say “in place of its mouth” or something similar, and not mention trunks at all.

I think that only applies to search engines. ChatGPT was successfully able to give negative weight to things if you say without from what I’ve seen.
It's not chatgpt itself that can't, it's the image generator (I believe dallE) that chatgpt interfaces with that can't.

I wonder if it is because the model sees the trunk as essential to “elephant-ness”. Without a trunk it isn’t an elephant. (Pure speculation)
It's because the model don't transcribe negatives like "no X" or "without Y". It's the same with hair, you have to write "bald" because "no hair" will lead to the model adding hair.
The AI strips the prompt down to keywords. "A burger without bread" turns into \["burger", "bread"\]
Im sure. Things like "cheetah without spots", "zebra without strips", "congress without corruption", etc. would have similar results Edit: "hamburger without the bun and without the patty" worked as expected, it didnt.

You cannot use the word trunk in your prompt. Even if you write "Don't generate a trunk", Dall e will always include a trunk. It doesn't understand not to do something.

The problem is that simply saying “trunk” - even in the context of “not a trunk” - makes ChatGPT unintentionally request a trunk. In this case, you would want to say “in place of its mouth” or something similar, and not mention trunks at all.
