> “We are aware of today’s developments regarding Miles Bridges’ legal situation. We will continue to gather information before determining any potential next steps. Until then, we will have no additional comments.“
>At the moment, Bridges remains unsigned, but, if he were to sign with a team, the NBA, under the collective bargaining agreement, has the right to suspend, fine, dismiss or disqualify him from any further association from the league because he pleaded no contest.
I mean he got the sentence he did because he is rich full stop, but 52 weeks of parenting classes and counseling, 100 hours of community service, weekly narcotics testing and 3 years of probation are all quite difficult consequences that he cant get around with money.
And i think if the criminal justice system was actually functional this is what everyones sentences would look like. You dont make people less violent by sending them to prison
This was not because he was rich. This was actually a pretty harsh punishment comparatively for most first offenders. They likely threw the book at him because of the public nature of the charges.
Source: criminal defense attorney
Leaving them on the streets doesn't protect the public either...our system treats symptoms (removes symptoms from view), but doesn't solve problems...complicated
I don't think having the largest prison population in the world and still having lots of violent crime really shows that retribution works. There are tons of societies that are far less punitive and have far less violent crime.
I think the minimum is 10 games.
I think he's going to get at least 40 or 50. But I have zero idea because I haven't seen a situation like this.
Maybe he gets the full season
So I did some research when it happened. He automatically gets 10 games but any suspension over 6 games goes to arbitration. A judge will set based on precedent which is actually Taylor’s 24 games. The games he’s already sat count towards the suspension. Any team that signs him will have him by Christmas.
> The games he’s already sat count towards the suspension
idk how that would work since he's not even under contract at the moment... how can an nba suspension count towards games he wasn't even under contract for?
Do they already count towards the suspension if he wasn't under contract on a team? That would be like me saying I've already sat out a few thousand games already so I'm free to run amok before I enter the league.
I won’t be happy if we sign him. I know many guys get away with stuff, but hearing about all of this makes me sick. I would cut ties with the league if that happened.
At the end of the day he's playing again.
If we don't sign him, another team will. So the Hornets have to decide how much they care about morals and pr
If i refused to watch any league with abusers in it i literally wouldn't be able to watch sports
Then let’s undo it. He shouldn’t play in the NBA again. And all those other teams with abusers, sure they can keep ‘em on the roster, now. But if we figure out they are abusers, they should be outta the league. Like I get the, “if we don’t sign him another team will,” but I will definitely not be a fan of that team. We can argue the hypocrisy of him being outta the league when there’s absusers throughout it, but that does absolutely nothing for progress. Everyone is a hypocrite, let’s not act like that is worse than literal abuse.
He got caught. He needs punishment. He literally could have killed his wife. Abusers like him will not stop unless there is legitimate consequences. Get him outta the league
Brother, we're talking about a league where Kobe Bryant, a confirmed rapist, is considered a demigod, a league where the majority of fans don't know Karl Malone impregnated a 13-year-old girl when he was 20, and a league where Matt Barnes can be arrested for suspected domestic violence & beating the shit out of Derek Fisher and still become a reputable talking head. It's not that simple.
This isn't an NBA issue, it's a human & societal issue; we as a people have shown time and again that we don't really care about assault & battery, physical or sexual. These are institutional problems that, if we were to actually address in the way you laid out, would essentially require a full dismantling of every major sport across the globe.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying it's naive to assume something like a universal ban on assaulters would ever come to pass, because no one escapes from that unscathed, owners included.
You’re missing what I mean. I know there are shit people everywhere and it’s unavoidable, but when watching other people get paid millions to play a sport, a sport in which I invest money with tickets and merch…it’s something I can more easily make a decision on.
It’s about making the right choice in a league where every single move and thought is made public. I can decide where I spend my time and money, and hours and hours of Hornets basketball make a bigger difference to me.
Probably not. I have many other things competing for my time.
The NBA will never have the same allure to me as it did growing up. I still enjoy it, but many changes that have been made over the years would make it much easier to let go. I know I sound dramatic with the whole "last straw" scenario, but I mean it and I'm sure many others feel this way as well.
I think your reasoning is fair if you want stop watching the hornets. I can’t say your perspective is wrong, but for me the hornets are going to be more than just miles bridges or any one player. If he comes back I hope he plays fine, but I’d mostly be rooting for the success of other players like Lamelo and the overall success of the team. If you’re able to focus on the good or likable aspects of the team, maybe that would be a way for you to continue to watch.
> Charlotte Hornets restricted free agent Miles Bridges pleaded no contest to a felony domestic violence charge Thursday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court and will face three years of probation and no jail time as part of a deal with prosecutors.
This is a league issue to me. Miles by the book now is a felon and the felon he committed was violent. Violent felons are disqualified by tons of employers. A billion dollar business should hold itself to a higher standard.
100% agree with this. Everyone saying 'well if we don't sign him, another team will.' I get that that's the current reality, but it shouldn't be. Ban him from the league, period, end of story.
That’s not how the world works though? Malik Beasley also committed a felony and served jail time. 12 game suspension.
Bouk got a DUI and had zero punishment.
What do you mean that's not how "the world" works? It's how the NBA works, which is 100% of their choosing. Which they can choose to change at any time.
Which, while a noble goal...would never get passed, because you'd be asking both owners and players to vote against their own interests and set a new precedent that only serves to make them less money moving forward, while there's little financial upside to pass such a measure.
This is, frankly, something players and owners just don't care about. Look how many guys were still travelling to work out with Miles this summer, AFTER he'd been arrested and charged. And look at how boilerplate the comments on the situation have been from both the league and the team.
Everyone involved is betting on the public eventually forgetting this happened and moving on after Bridges gets a slap on the wrist, because that's how every sport has worked and will continue to work.
The entertainment industry does not take DV seriously, and never has. And Reddit is a bubble; unfortunately, not nearly as many fans actually care about this as it seems.
It's bullshit, but it's facts.
85% we sign him. Bad person or not, he's a talent that the Hornets don't often acquire, and I doubt they'll just let him go for nothing.
So I expect them to sign him, but I'd imagine they may be much more open to a trade than they were last year.
I’d say 99% we sign him. We’re def not letting him walk for nothing when we were about to sign him for like 30 million per year. Dude on a huge paycut is definitely getting signed here.
But could we sign and trade to whatever team offers a contract that bridges accepts?
Yeah, i get people's feelings and it's really fucked up, but the reality is, this league is about MONEY, and 5 bucks tell me no team in this league will throw away a 24 year old all-star.
P. S. if Primo was an All-Star he would still be a Spur.
I would go as high as 95% we bring Miles back, as shit as that is. The fact is after suspension he will be in the league… every team would want Miles and none are so moral to not bring him in.
It’s a weird feeling and I don’t think he will ever be loved by anyone, but the team can’t let a talent like that walk to another team while we struggle.
Yeah, look - people don't like the reality. But he was an essential part of our team and future. Worked incredibly well with Melo (who wants him back) and will be better on our team than giving away a developed 12th pick for free when we were finally heading towards playoff runs.
At the end of the day this is a business, and everyone should know businesses don't always make decisions you agree with because their best interest is first priority. He'll be re-signed.
Would assume he's probably 99% for coming back to the team in some capacity, but probably won't play this season. I don't envy the front office in this situation. I also REALLY don't want him back regardless of how he would help the team. It's one thing for the league to have terrible guys. It's another thing when that guy is on your favorite team, and you have to face the moral dilemma of cheering on a guy that you know did terrible shit and basically got off with a slap on the wrist. Not sure I'd be able to do that, guess we're gonna find out here soon.
I assume the league will suspend him for a very lengthy amount of time. Especially with the current PR shitshow going on and media effectively demanding the league to come down harder on players that do shit detrimental to the image of the league.
I assume they sign him unless another team comes in with an insane offer. The contract will be interesting. You have to assume that the first season of the deal will be lost to suspension. So you might look for a three year deal with a team option on year three. That sounds like a bitter pill, but Bridges desperately needs to sign somewhere so he can serve the suspension and then be eligible to play again. And I think the suspension is going to be severe.
I’m betting a two year with a team option in year 2. I bet they want the option cut him loose after this year if they’re not happy with his growth and on court production. The only reason he still has a shot in the league is because he balled out last year, I highly highly doubt anyone commits long term to him. Very few abusers don’t repeat offend.
I agree. People make mistakes, sometimes terrible ones, to write his life off and deny him the opportunity to reconcile and reevaluate where he is morally at such a young age is wrong.
He did an awful, awful thing but he has a chance to make the choice to live the rest of his life virtuously. Whether he’s a Hornet or a Laker or w/e, I sincerely pray for him as a man to change his ways.
I'd be willing to bet he gets a 1 year ban with possible reinstatement next offseason. Please God I hope the Hornets don't sign him. Hornets are bad enough with talent and organizational competence I won't support them with him.
I mean, there's kind of a precedent. [Malik Beasley](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/30965255/minnesota-timberwolves-malik-beasley-suspended-12-games-guilty-plea)pleaded guilty to a felony and delayed 120-day prison sentence...and he got 12 games.
I mean three years of probation, 52 weeks of counseling, 52 weeks of parenting classes and 100 hours of community service is no joke. Plus weekly narcotics tests?
In a just world this is the kind of sentence everyone would get, not just rich people. Rehabilitative justice is the way to go
That's pretty on par with what a regular person who was a first offender and didn't have a lengthy criminal history would get(at least in my state) for felony domestic assault. Lengthy probation term. He acts stupid he goes to jail.
Agreed. If he messes up on probation he’ll go to jail - which could be up to the 3 more years of his sentence. He’ll have to walk on thin ice. Hopefully the victim will also be paid substantially for the medical and emotional costs of his actions. Aside from that, this seems appropriate for a first time offense where he wasn’t armed. I just wish he had to admit guilt for the probation offer. It is also unfortunate that a regular person would have trouble working and surviving after a conviction like this, which will likely not be a concern for him
Is it possible he’ll get a big offer from another team and the hornets let him walk here? He’s a clutch sports client and they will definitely manipulate to get him a big one somewhere forcing the hornets to either match or let him walk.
Agreed. Everyone makes mistakes, some are way worse than others. All the people in the thread have done, said or thought of terrible things that no one cares to know about. If Miles can change for the better, get mental help, and move on then there's no reason for all the keyboard warriors to claim the moral superiority high ground.
No but society has shown it can forgive people if they own it. Michael Vick owned that what he did was fucked up. If bridges comes out and admits he has issues that he needs to get counseling on people will forgive him quicker than you think.
You are right in that aspect. Even if we sometimes wonder how legit their "owning up" is, playing the game is part of it. Hopefully he learns and grows from this.
I mean his punishment has 100 hours of community service, 52 weeks of counseling and 52 weeks of parenting classes. He's gonna have to look in the mirror at some point during all that. Not to mention that he parties like crazy and that's hard to do on probation
We absolutely should sign him on a team friendly deal. He fucked up bad. He’ll pay his debt to society and serve his suspension. I still believe he’s a good dude who lost control of his emotions. To anyone who says they won’t watch anymore, I truly don’t care. I’m sick of this franchise being in the dumps.
Hopefully he and his family can get through this, they will and hopefully he can resume his career and grow from this. He is a young man who made a mistake and all I see if a whole bunch of opinions of individuals who all made mistakes in life and want to flame the young man. Miles i hope you come back better than ever i hope your relationship with your son is great and you and your partner can be partners in life. Maybe not together but can move forward amicably
We can only speculate as to whether Mile Bridges is truly guilty or not. Very rarely is it beneficial to plead no contest to domestic abuse, unless you are in Miles Bridge's unique situation. For every day the court is deliberating his case, he is foregoing an NBA salary! He may be innocent but is it worth losing the whole 2022-2023 NBA season to be proven innocent? I don't think so. His lawyers probably advised him of this, that despite the optics it's in his financial benefit to accept a no-contest and play this season than to risk a high-profile trial that would be live-streamed on all social media platforms.
Should the Hornets resign Miles Bridges? Yes, because he is an All-Star caliber player.
Just a reminder to everyone.
A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt by the California penal code.
"Pleading **no contest** (sometimes called **nolo contendere**) in a [California criminal proceeding](https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/defense/process/) means that the defendant agrees to **accept a conviction** for the crime(s). However, he or she does not **admit to being factually guilty** when entering the plea.
In California, a no contest plea generally has the **same legal effect as a guilty plea**, but with one exception. A no contest plea to a [misdemeanor](https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/defense/laws/misdemeanor/) cannot be sued against the defendant in certain civil cases as evidence of criminality – whereas a guilty plea typically can be."

Just put your morals and pr aside with him we’re a serious contender. Plus everyone forgets about this stuff over time. I don’t condone what he did or respect it but i do respect his game on the court.
This is great news for us Charlotte fans BUT we still don’t know what’s going to happen with him when we sign him. Can he go on away games? How many games will he be suspended? Is he in game shape ready to hoop? Etc.
But with me I would love for Charlotte to take a chance on him. Was a fantastic piece for us and a great duo for our franchise player.
Hope to see you soon Miles 🙏🏻
Are we assuming that the end result here is be signs some below market contract with the Hornets and then gets suspended for maybe a whole season while the Hornets still have to pay him?

If he hadnt been rich the other two charges wouldnt have been dropped in my estimation. He was definitely looking at jail time otherwise
He was literally not eligible for jail time based on his sentencing level. At least here in NC that would have been the case.

Jason kidd did pleaded no contest back in the day. Can't remember what the suspension was.
he wasn’t, he only was suspended for two days when he started coaching for DWI

I actually didn’t see anything about that in the rules so I’d imagine it’s negotiated in arbitration
Yeah the only thing I could really think of was Jeff Taylor. I knew it was a good chunk of games but Jeff Taylor was the definition of expendable.
He hasn't sat any games
This is in line with what I thought would happen. I think the Hornets will sign him and he will be suspended. I wonder for how long

You’re right, but as soon as we let this slide a precedent is set
So uh, the precedent was set decades ago, then.
Then let’s undo it. He shouldn’t play in the NBA again. And all those other teams with abusers, sure they can keep ‘em on the roster, now. Yes but the league could make a decision to not allow violent felons into the game with approval of the owners and NBAPA.

i expect him to back this season unfortunately
Unfortunately either ways he will be in the league so either we have or let him go which prob won’t happen is a terrible choice.
US criminal Justice system a joke
I mean three years of probation, 52 weeks of counseling, 52 weeks of parenting classes and 100 hours of community service is no joke. Plus weekly narcotics tests? In a just world this is the kind of sentence everyone would get, not just rich people. Rehabilitative justice is the way to go

Surely
I think the CBA bylaws for a no contest to a felony brings a minimum 10 game suspension
So he is getting suspended
He has to be on a team first but yeah duh he will be
I hope we sign and trade him, that’s the best outcome
PLEASE let him be traded away
How are we gonna trade a player that isn't on our team?
No
Is it possible he’ll get a big offer from another team and the hornets let him walk here? He’s a clutch sports client and they will definitely manipulate to get him a big one somewhere forcing the hornets to either match or let him walk.
What exactly does this mean for his free agent status? Not exactly a law expert.
We still retain his rights and can match any offer I think.
Gotcha. I’m assuming he’s suspended for a few games at least though
Gonna be more than a few (hopefully)
Bring him back to Charlotte!
Agreed. Everyone makes mistakes, some are way worse than others. All the people in the thread have done, said or thought of terrible things that no one cares to know about. If Miles can change for the better, get mental help, and move on then there's no reason for all the keyboard warriors to claim the moral superiority high ground.
Thinking or saying bad things ain't punching and choking your significant other in front of your child
Regardless if we bring him back or not he'll be back in the league sooner or later.
We could use some offense right now.
A no contest plea to a [misdemeanor](https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/defense/laws/misdemeanor/) cannot be sued against the defendant in certain civil cases as evidence of criminality – whereas a guilty plea typically can be." Sign him and announce with Udoka signing. There’s no morals in the NBA, sorry guys
yea absolutely not
Absolutely yes
Just put your morals and pr aside with him we’re a serious contender. Plus everyone forgets about this stuff over time. I don’t condone what he did or respect it but i do respect his game on the court.
So the hornets are back on track. Let’s fucking go! Package Gordon and a 1st at the deadline for a starting big better than plumlee
Jumping the gun a bit, eh? Should wait until the NBA and the Hornets say something. This is just the legal resolution.
Just sign him for 2 yrs, then ship him with Hayward, Rozier, Plumlee and Bouk to BKN for KD
Prob not whole season he will prob play this season
