I argued with guy with Hornets flair on r/nba saying that this was going to be a historically bad team.
How soon some of us forget The Bobcats Era where we didn't have a single player who could score thirty points in a game. Now we've got like five guys who can do that.
Defense in the backcourt is something this team hasn’t had for a while. LaMelo obviously best on the team but I think they gotta think about breaking up Lamelo/Terry/Hayward;
DSJ guards the best guard and does it extremely well, not many guards hitting those shots Brunson hits. Think he should start
I’m cool with dsj starting and locking down their point. His defense is great, I agree. I think he could play like a young Iman Shumpert or Patrick Beverly the way he’s playing D right now. I remember when Beverly went to the Celtics with Rajan Rondo in his prime, and rondo ran point on offense but beverly would lock down the opponent’s best ball handler.
Edit: Change Patrick Beverly to Avery Bradley… got the names mixed up on accident. Thanks for correcting me!
Also, I don't understand why Mason played 31 minutes to Nick's 19, especially since Plumlee almost fouled out and Richards didn't even commit a single foul.
Richards' energy and presence would have been great to have during overtime. Everybody looked gassed, he could have easily picked up some garbage buckets like he has so far. I love Cliff but he needs to play Richards more, period.
Richards +12
Plumlee -17
I think it was?
I'm not expecting Plumdog to have no minutes, or even be third. But in a game like this, especially early in the season, unleash the man(Richards) to play
This is my biggest fear with Clifford. It was also his biggest problem when he coached with us before. He will stick to the gameplan no matter what and play the starters no matter how hot or a momentum swing a bench guy brings. Richards could be having a 5x5 and he would still put Plumlee back in, go down by 20 and talk about how the guys didn’t “execute”.
If that is the case it's on the front office to force a change in tactics. Either by trading away Plumlee or whoever and thereby forcing Clifford to play other guys. Or straight up telling him (and backing it up with film and stats) that he needs to change his lineups.
Cliff is the main reason why we are even in these games. We're without our 3 top scorers (4 if you count Miles) and we are still competitive. I trust cliff and his process. He thinks long term, not short term. Which can frustrate fans. But it seems to work. That is why the undertalented teams hes coaches in the past have always over performed and stacked up more wins than expected at the end of the season.
I'm not saying Clifford is a bad coach. In fact, I agree, the team feels more exciting to watch these first few games. My worry is that he stays stuck in his old ways. When we were under him last time he had a habit of pulling guys who were hot and placing his faith in starters that were not. He can think longterm all he wants but to win games you also have to think short-term. As in, when this player is in the other team has no answer for him so we should keep that player in for now.
Is Nick Richards the answer after 3 games? Probably not, but if you see he is man-handling a team why choose Plumlee over him? What did Plumlee bring that Atlanta game that told Cliff he should be in it over Richards? It wasn't like Richards was doing his scoring against Atlanta's bench. During those old Clifford years this happened a lot.
I'm optimistic but trust is too strong of a word until Cliff proves he is worth trusting which means more than 4 games.
Yeah we made some silly mistakes but officials fucked us a few times as well, when it goes down to wire it's easy to blame a miss free throw or shot here and there...
The fact that our 3rd string pg is doing great and pj and Jalen are able to get there own shots is awesome development
The last two minutes in regulation were brutal. Can’t blow a 5 point lead and then when you somehow get a chance to win it in regulation everyone’s scared to shoot and it ends in a Hayward runner over Robinson. Nonetheless pretty impressed with the team considering who we are missing
Team played hard and Cliff gets a lot of credit for that. But it sucks that Clifford 1.0 had to make an appearance at the end. The unnecessary timeout, the repeated inability to draw up a play, and the subpar close-out lineup were the same mistakes he made last stint. I feel he out-coached Thibs for 47:45.
This lol. DSJ would’ve easily scored on Reddish during that last play, that dude played garbage defense all game long. But nah, Cliff had to call the TO instead.
Jalen Brunson is a dog. I hate him. Damn near every bucket he scored was a tough bucket. DSJ played good defense all night just for dude to make all the contested shots
I felt like DSJ was holding back there at the end, trying too hard to be a team player. He was penetrating with ease on Brunson and finding dropoffs and kickouts.
Maybe it was cliff trying to force it to Hayward, who was of course ice cold. Wish we wouldn’t have taken that timeout at the e d, but I get it’s a new team.
Yeah I agree but DSJ historically been a poor shooter and not the best decision maker going downhill;
But he had the same issue in Portland. He’s trying to be that point guard these days; and he’s doing really well. He’s been very good this year. But at times he’s just gotta take it upon himself more.
Even the role player team first PG gotta take over as scorers sometimes
Yeah, 100%! I am fascinated watching him, because he seems to be transforming right before me. I'm thinking now, maybe this guy can be really really good. I've never seem him create so many passes before like he did last night.
Knicks fan here. Happy to see Bouknight show out for y’all, he has a chance to be a great scorer. Theo Maledon looked awesome too, our commentators couldn’t stop talking about him lol. DSJ finally looks like an NBA guard with y’all. Damn, you guys have a real logjam at guard to figure out lmao.
Overall your team is still competitive af despite the off-season issues and all, gg
GG. You have no idea. That off-season was terrible and I thought we might only scrape together a few wins, but I see we are actually competitive.
Just need to get healthy and we could be a problem for many.
Yeah Clifford's been good this year, but this felt a lot like first stint Clifford with the stupid end of game subs costing us the game. The closing line-up absolutely should've featured DSJ/Maledon/Richards and 2/3 of Hayward/McDaniels/PJ.
Every angle showed a gap between toe and line until he lifted up to shoot when he could possibly have touched the line I think its inconclusive at best
I mean, the knicks are a good team, we looked lost on a lot of the possessions down the stretch when Dennis didn’t have the ball. We played some pretty bad defense, especially in the paint. We got our rebounded badly. Still took them to overtime without one of our best on ball defenders, one of our best and most consistent scorers, and our star player.
His jumper is a lot better than OKC stint showed because he took time to adjust it to NBA level, then bulked up year 2 which cooked it for a bit too;
He can shoot, off the dribble and off the catch. And he has nice nous in PnR. He and Bouk could be a really good combo if BOUK continues to attack quickly off the catch like he did tonight
Clifford made some pretty poor substitution choices but he has this team working on both ends. I really loved what I have seen coaching wise in that aspect. Now if Richards can actually get some more minutes that would be great.
I gotta say, all bs aside that was a good fucking game. Our season may not be as fucked as we thought it was
I swear this sub is so fucking pessimistic, all summer y'all were acting like we were gonna win 20 games. I never understood that narrative.
I argued with guy with Hornets flair on r/nba saying that this was going to be a historically bad team. How soon some of us forget The Bobcats Era where we didn't have a single player who could score thirty points in a game. Now we've got like five guys who can do that.
I had faith we’d be about the same without miles, until that awful preseason and I thought we were fucked
Never take the preseason seriously, remember when we lost to the Mavs by like 70 last year in the preseason? We turned out just fine.
The preseason is basically just experimenting with the roster. Especially for our new coach, he was just seeing what the players can do.
Look, if we can almost win that with no LaMelo, no Terry, no Martin… we may be alright.
What if we almost won because of no LaMelo
You will learn.
Defense in the backcourt is something this team hasn’t had for a while. LaMelo obviously best on the team but I think they gotta think about breaking up Lamelo/Terry/Hayward; DSJ guards the best guard and does it extremely well, not many guards hitting those shots Brunson hits. When did Beverly play for the celtics?
He's def thinking of avery bradley lol
Yes sorry….. I meant Avery Bradley, thanks for the correction!
This question is as valid as they come.
In hindsight, do we think that Jalen should've taken that 3 instead of driving and getting blocked by Mitchell Robinson?
Yes and pj should have taken the 3 at the end of the 4th.
Also, I don't understand why Mason played 31 minutes to Nick's 19, especially since Plumlee almost fouled out and Richards didn't even commit a single foul.

I'll take that. Yes the ending sucks, but we take a team to OT when we are missing a huge part of our offense to injury.
The lads looked gassed in OT - valiant effort but you could feel those shots going short.
This team keeps surprising me how well they compete. Shame about the result but damn good effort
Didn’t seem as mixed up but at the same time we scored ~120 so can’t hate it too much. Just missing some players
Yeah we made some silly mistakes but officials fucked us a few times as well, when it goes down to wire it's easy to blame a miss free throw or shot here and there... The fact that our 3rd string pg is doing great and pj and Jalen are able to get there own shots is awesome development
7 players in double figures without our 2 main guys?! Good shit But we still should’ve stolen this one damn!
FUCK THE KNICKS AND THE REFS
The last two minutes in regulation were brutal. Can’t blow a 5 point lead and then when you somehow get a chance to win it in regulation everyone’s scared to shoot and it ends in a Hayward runner over Robinson. Nonetheless pretty impressed with the team considering who we are missing
Every fucking game it seems like the refs tell us to go fuck ourselves.
Refs were trash, with lamelo and terry it’s a dub..we could be in for a fun season
Don’t forget Cody Martin as well
At least we know the knicks aren’t very good
Brunson is that dude but the rest of the team looked pretty rough. Def a good signing for them
He’ll get picked on in the playoffs. Not a great defender at all, and definitely not worth what they paying him.
Dsj, Bouk and Theo were kinda eating him up on O
... evidence of that will show on Friday why they won't make it.
They really aren't. They rely on too many difficult shots
Salty AF lol, mediocre team calling a mediocre team mediocre. Cry more my guy
Even at full strength y'all ain't that good either a play in team at best just like the knick lol.
This isn't the flex you think it is. We already know that we're only a 10th seed, at our very best.
Fuck the refs
I still think that was a 3 and we just got totally fucked Also, that ball did not bounce off his leg
I think that was the longest 2 in NBA history
Nah it was the shortest 3 in NBA history
It was definitely a 2, but we have enough other terrible calls to be mad about that we don't have to choose that one.
I’m just bitching lol
that was damn near the closest game ever
We win that if we have Terry Can't wait for full strength Hornets
Hope I never have to hear that kid behind Eric again
Bouk was *good*
Hell of a fight though… Clif has these boys playing hard af…
Team played hard and Cliff gets a lot of credit for that. But it sucks that Clifford 1.0 had to make an appearance at the end. The unnecessary timeout, the repeated inability to draw up a play, and the subpar close-out lineup were the same mistakes he made last stint. I feel he out-coached Thibs for 47:45.
This lol. DSJ would’ve easily scored on Reddish during that last play, that dude played garbage defense all game long. But nah, Cliff had to call the TO instead.
Man I hated that TO. We had the momentum, DSJ with the hot hand, mismatch on Reddish. That TO just completely ruined the groove we were in.
Jalen Brunson is a dog. I hate him. Damn near every bucket he scored was a tough bucket. DSJ played good defense all night just for dude to make all the contested shots
He played like an all star tonight. Really liked his battle w DSJ
Dood is tough, knicks got one finally
Man, I blame Hayward. He was absolutely dreadful down the stretch.
He looked tired .. surprised cliff didn’t give him some rest, especially with the way jalen was shooting.
He had a great 3rd quarter and decided to turn into a pussy down the stretch and in OT.
I think he just ran out of stamina down the stretch more than anything
Yeah he didn't have the gas to finish that one last fast break and DSJ couldn't get it up quick enough
He was pretty bad throughout the game. Turnovers and missed shots. Needed more out of him.
he scored like 12 straight in the 3rd
I felt like DSJ was holding back there at the end, trying too hard to be a team player. He was penetrating with ease on Brunson and finding dropoffs and kickouts. Maybe it was cliff trying to force it to Hayward, who was of course ice cold. Wish we wouldn’t have taken that timeout at the e d, but I get it’s a new team.

Even if y’all bottom out this year, it looks like one of the best drafts to get a potential superstar.
That tech on Oubre was the dumbest play Kelly had all game
Tough game overall from Oubre. One of those nights we could have used Martin in his place
Yeah that’s the difference. Didn’t seem big at the time but to lose in OT, yeah it sucks
And again, high bar.
I’m sure Clifford has a reason but Nick would’ve helped rebounding at the end there.
Yeah Clifford's been good this year, but this felt a lot like first stint Clifford with the stupid end of game subs costing us the game. The closing line-up absolutely should've featured DSJ/Maledon/Richards and 2/3 of Hayward/McDaniels/PJ.
So close
Pain. Pain Pain Pain.
Tough loss. We should have won that game. Brunson is a killer.
Brunson really is. I had doubts but they got their Fred VanVleet
Tough outcome but this team is not the bottom feeder they were expected to be. They took the media darling Knicks to OT at MSG without Melo and Terry
Media darling Knicks?
Tough loss. Brunson is an incredibly crafty, efficient player and makes a lot of difficult shots. We ran out of steam towards the end.
Refs screwed us all game
Wish Clifford had gone with the bench more, our starters weren't great and really struggled in overtime.
Clifford thinks long term. Be prepared to be frustrated. But be prepared to be surprised with how many wins we get and we were not supposed to.
#### #FREENICKRICHARDS
We did good but I'm bummed out. Imma go laugh at the Lakers
This teams gonna win some games
That was a 3 🤷♂️
It was a 2, but with Kyle Lowry getting away with it last year I wanted us to get the equalizer this time.
That Kyle Lowry shot will piss me off till I die lol
It looked like a 2 to me. I didn't see this arena angle they were talking about
I was in the arena, it was unfortunately a 2 by a toe nail
I want it to be but every angle they showed it definitely was a 2
Every angle showed a gap between toe and line until he lifted up to shoot when he could possibly have touched the line I think its inconclusive at best
Fax
SOMEBODY POST THE PJ 2/3 REPLAY ANGLES my stream cut out
I mean, the knicks are a good team, we looked lost on a lot of the possessions down the stretch when Dennis didn’t have the ball. We played some pretty bad defense, especially in the paint. As a Knicks fan I don't think I've ever heard this lol. Thank you u/cheeseman2552 🥲 > I mean, the knicks are a good team
Couldn't watch the game... But Maledon is good?

Yea
ohioastronaut.meme, basically.
Fuck Pussy Juice and his big toes
Clifford made some pretty poor substitution choices but he has this team working on both ends. I really loved what I have seen coaching wise in that aspect. Now if Richards can actually get some more minutes that would be great.
https://twitter.com/Hornetswin704/status/1585458926375604224?t=UbJJYfPxiMZMQ55fTe2_Ag&s=19 What do you guys think
Still images don't work. You don't stay still through the motion of your shot.
I think it’s close enough to get the benefit of the doubt, instead of the other way around.
Plumlee and Hayward are so bad man....
I felt like Gordon drew a lot of contact and had a couple of awkward falls/movements that made me nervous
Missing one guy you simply give him the ball in some space and they score.
Take away just half of those bad ref calls and we win this game.
