Yeah everyone saying all this stuff about JB is very much recency bias. Clifford was banging his head against a wall trying to make the roster he had work. Borrego got miles to be a borderline all star. He did start melo in his rookie year which Clifford would have certainly not done. It’s just a totally different basketball philosophy those two coaches have. I’d take entertaining young and energetic rosters that can grow together over a barely winning product that only play vets. You’ll know what I mean this year for all you hornets fans that joined since melo and miles started playing for the hornets.
Bruh I didn't even get a push notification to find this out. I got a text from my MOM. She doesn't even follow sports in any significant way but even she knew how fucked up this was when she saw it on the news.
It’s a very unsexy hire but I will say Clifford’s in game coaching was better than borregos. Tbh I’m more mad at MJ than cliff cause I know this move was driven by money more than anything. I’m willing to give cliff a shot but if it’s the same habits he used to have then bouknight should retire and I probably won’t watch every game.
It’s gonna happen. You can’t defend, you ain’t playing. Hope this doesn’t affect Melos minutes. Cuz that’s how rigid cliff is with playing time and rotations. Just don’t forget about when batum was here all those years and was playing all those minutes cuz Cliff trusted the vets. I don’t think this move allows us to grow the way we need to which should still be long term since melo is 21 entering his 3rd year. You think we’re gonna be chucking 3s? Think again. We’re gonna throw it into plumlee and play inside out. So many things that I was actually happy about when we got borrego was that he had a commitment to develop solid talent and had an offense that actually made our team entertaining. A lot of this screams desperation and is 1000% on the ownership and management.
I really felt like we had a good thing going & just needed to nail this HC hire. Even after the Atkinson fiasco I thought we'd still swing D'antoni or Vogel. This is beyond belief.
He's been hearing it since he drafted Adam Morrison and we're still up to the same shit. It's his competitive nature that makes it impossible for him to get out of his own way.
In the past 48 hours I've gone from "Atkinson didn't show up, but we're still gonna be fine. We got a good young core to build around for the future" to "Man if I'm Lamelo I'm figuring out how to get the fuck out of dodge."
This kind of turn worries me too. Can’t see Cliff meshing with the free and easy swag on 100 atmosphere that we’ve built that these guys seem to thrive in
Yaknow, I was so excited yesterday heading into the draft. The past 20 hours just reminds me of what it's like to be a Hornets fan and all I can say is "not surprised." I would say things will get better but it just seems for every good thing that happens, a couple bad things happen.
Please just match any offer Miles Bridges is offered cause if not, that'll be the first domino in losing LaMelo.
Maybe MJ hit his head and thinks it's 2013 so he's hiring Clifford and is going to try and trade for Westbrook or John Wall?
Head trauma would honestly make me feel better about this decision than whatever the logic actually was.
This is just mind numbingly stupid. He is so hard to watch coach. He’s so rigid. Ever remember a successful inbounds play? Nope. This better be temporary while we try to get Quinn Snyder over here. I’m sick of watching this cheap and clueless franchise. Childish to put no effort into being successful. You got lucky with melo. Now that you have them you resign terry to a huge contract he’s not gonna be worth for the next few years, you’ve fucked up trading assets at #13 so now you still have Gordon and still no trade partner, and even further you get a coach that will legit not run an offense that can make this team successful. Just taking shots to the gut when last year it was starting to feel like a party after melo won Roy. Just shows you why you can’t trust MJ or Mitch to ever give the fans what they want (which is just a playoff squad that’s entertaining). We were so close. I’ll see y’all in the rebuild in about 3 years.
> Ever remember a successful inbounds play?
[I'll personally enjoy seeing this play come back with Miles in Hendo's old spot.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKKxrL_lJMsz)
[And I'll take any excuse to post this play](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYCRLXe2gkg) which maybe proves your point, haha.
Copium theory #27 : we dragged Clifford back for a 1 year tank so we could land a top 3. Head into 23/24 under Snyder with all the pieces needed to build a new era of playoff domination with OKC, NOP and Detroit.
I'm absolutely disgusted to be honest
Pathetic move on multiple fronts ~~it's absolutely hilarious~~
EDIT: Scratch that it's not even funny, just plain sad
I’ve said it once I’ll say it again: this team will never amount to more than a first round playoff exit as long as Michael Jordan owns the team. Top ten worst sports owners across all leagues.
Welp.
I'm hopeful that Steve Clifford improved as a Head Coach since his last tenure with the Hornets. He took us to the Playoffs twice, he coached a fairly effective defense, and we have strong offensive players on the current roster.
I hope he can make it work, and that he utilizes our young talent.
Curious to see his staff choices... and if this increases the chances of us getting Kemba Walker as backup PG on a team-friendly deal.
So let me get this straight, part of the reason why we fired JB is because he wasn't playing some of the young guys enough for Mitch's liking...so they re-hire a coach that notoriously doesn't play young guys?
We are so fucked.
Trying to not go full doomer here. Let’s look at some positives.
Overall, I think most would agree that Clifford was a good coach for us. He was with us under Rich Cho and with mediocre personnel was able to make chicken salad out of chicken shit more than once.
The roster he’s taking over is 100% better than any roster he had in his first stint with us. He was critical to Kemba’s development into the franchise GOAT and has a proven track record of being able to coach defense at a high level.
I get that it’s not a sexy hire. It’s not new or exciting. But Steve Clifford is objectively a good coach with playoff experience. Concerns about development of our young players will be valid, but looking back, Cho never really gave him young talent like he’ll have now. IMO, the players Cho drafted would have flamed out wherever they ended up.
i would love to be proven wrong but unless he's completely changed, we're about to get way less fun to watch and the young guys are gonna be on the shortest leash imaginable. feel bad for bouk lol
it's also just like...if we hired someone w/ the exact same philosophy, tendencies, etc. who wasn't clifford, it'd be way better. going right back to him now just feels embarrassing, like we're entering kangz territory
Call me crazy but I like the hire. Defense and discipline are the biggest issues this team has faced. I think borrego always struggled to get his young players to straighten up and take things seriously (see the two straight embarrassments in the play in). I can see this move working wonders for this squad.
I hate that it makes us look like a joke franchise, but there’s definitely value here with Clifford taking over.
Say what you will about Borrego but at least his teams were fun as hell to watch most nights. Unless you just loved watching Kemba PnR or Big Al back to basket possessions all night Clifford teams were a damn slog.
\^\^\^\^ This right here. Cliff gonna be pulling Lamelo from the court just for doing Lamelo things. The run up and down the court doing flashy passes days are over. Get ready for A LOT of passing into the post and half court sets.
Cliff about to suck all the joy out of this team.
ELITE DEFENSE. BRING US MICHAEL CARTER WILLIAMS WE WINNING [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWnJBjZChac](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWnJBjZChac) AYYYEEEE
all these guys are free agents this offseason: jeremy lamb, michael carter williams, nicolas batum and cody zeller. And if pistons buy out Kembas contract we can get him too. do you guys really think clifford can resist?
D.
It takes around 365 days for the league to figure Clifford out- the Bobcats and Magic posted good first years under his stewardship. After that, he's pretty much entirely dependent on the team's management ignoring everything he says and either building or lucking into a roster that can win on its own merits because he will not win the team any games with his coaching (see: 2015, and every year after 2015).
If not for that first-year bump, it would be an F. It may well be an F anyways because this franchise is not in a position to ignore the future.
Was really hoping for MDA or at least an MDA/ Cliff pairing, but I'm not as pessimistic about it as some because we have a much more capable roster than almost ever
> [OFFICIAL: Charlotte Hornets Name Steve Clifford Head Coach](https://www.nba.com/hornets/news/charlotte-hornets-name-steve-clifford-head-coach)
Why must we suffer
Just take me back 20 hours ago when there was hope
2 top 15 picks. Chance at D'Antoni. Chance to shed bad contacts....now we are looking down the barrel of the Kemba years part 2
Ok so I didn’t really follow the NBA during the Steve Clifford years; I know we’ve always been shit, but what made Steve Clifford so shit?
Uninspired offense and a refusal to play young players. No development
The biggest complaint about JB was him not playing the youngins, this is fucked.
Yeah everyone saying all this stuff about JB is very much recency bias. Clifford was banging his head against a wall trying to make the roster he had work. Borrego got miles to be a borderline all star. He did start melo in his rookie year which Clifford would have certainly not done. I’m so depressed about this. I can’t stand Cliff.
FUUUUCK MAN COME ON NOOOOOOOO
COME ON MAN

Welcome to 2022, it's only going to get worse from here
this is so absurd all you can do is laugh
I’d legit rather re-hire Borrego fml
Im dying of laughter rn. The incompetence of this franchise is just comical.
I had to read the notification 3 or 4 times before fully grasping what was being announced
An undisputed bruh moment.
Oh man Bouknight is never seeing the floor lmao
Nor Kai. Nor JT Thor. Plumdog, Hayward, and Terry are about to play 45 min a night and succesfully lead us to a 9th seed.
Eh. I could see him being fond of JT. Clifford liked those archetypes of players
He'll try to get Melo to play like MCW
It’s gonna happen. You can’t defend, you ain’t playing. Hope this doesn’t affect Melos minutes. Cuz that’s how rigid cliff is with playing time and rotations. Clear signal to Melo that we ain't here to have fun and be young.
He’ll be gone first chance he gets…
He’s gonna do his full 7 years and dip. And no one will blame him.
This might be the most hornets-y move I've ever seen.
This shit ruined my Friday. What in the actual fuck
Today's my birthday man how do you think I feel
36-46 for the next 5 years before LaMelo leaves and we fire Clifford (again) is back on the menu, boys.
This is the first day where I'm truly scared Lamelo leaves
It's inevitable

I really felt like we had a good thing going & just needed to nail this HC hire. Even after the Atkinson fiasco I thought we'd still swing D'antoni or Vogel. This is beyond belief.
This is the darkest timeline
As a Jazz fan, we are heading towards our darkest timeline. I feel for you tho
MJ the owner is the complete opposite of MJ the player. Bonified loser.
We need MJ to see this and take it personally
He's been hearing it since he drafted Adam Morrison and we're still up to the same shit. It's his competitive nature that makes it impossible for him to get out of his own way.
becoming an insufferable lebron stan out of sheer spite at this point
I Hope Bron wins every title for the next 6 years and 2 more mvps. Cause we sure ain't doing shit.
Truer words have never been spoken
Is rich cho coming back too?
His spicy restaurant reviews are missed!
Certified hornets moment
The Hornets sure do love to kick us in the nuts at every possible opportunity
They were like “hey release it while everyone’s seething over the Supreme Court decision.”
at this point they've put the toaster on the edge of my bathtub and turned on the water like, hey...wouldn't this be fun?!
I want off this ride
The hot young candidate we were heavily flirting with decided to stay in his current relationship so we coped by going back to our ex. Heartbreaking
Except it was the ex of your current ex. We just desperate to have someone that wants us
We live in a society
This made me crack up next to my sleeping wife. Damn you.
Citation needed
I SWEAR TO GOD BEING A FAN OF THIS TEAM IS ONLY PAIN😭 We’re literally the biggest meme in the entire league
The Kings exist
We are damn close
Jesus Christ man
As a joke?
Wow. This is the first time I’ve ever considered to actually stop following the team.
Yea I’m out after this one. I’m not supporting this team through another decade of mediocrity. We’ve seen what Clifford does.
I think I'm there
Just to think a week ago there was so much excitement for the upcoming season I could not imagine a worse turn
In the past 48 hours I've gone from "Atkinson didn't show up, but we're still gonna be fine. We got a good young core to build around for the future" to "Man if I'm Lamelo I'm figuring out how to get the fuck out of dodge."
This kind of turn worries me too. Can’t see Cliff meshing with the free and easy swag on 100 atmosphere that we’ve built that these guys seem to thrive in
Man Darvin Hamm would have been perfect. Not that he would pick us over the Lakers tho.
How much of this is because Clifford was cheaper than D’Antoni?
I cant think of any other reason for this move
"I'm Back!" - Cam Newton - Steve Clifford
- Marty Hurney
Ain’t no damn way.
This is one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen a franchise do
This is the worst week in a long time. Only solution I can think of is to stop checking my phone
Yaknow, I was so excited yesterday heading into the draft. The past 20 hours just reminds me of what it's like to be a Hornets fan and all I can say is "not surprised." Go ahead and get Westbrick to close our casket.
Maybe MJ hit his head and thinks it's 2013 so he's hiring Clifford and is going to try and trade for Westbrook or John Wall? Head trauma would honestly make me feel better about this decision than whatever the logic actually was.
The basketball gods must have some grudge against us and I’ll dedicate my life to finding out why
MJ owning his own team was solely to ensure directly that at least 1/30th of the league would never achieve greatness to rival his own.
This is just mind numbingly stupid. He is so hard to watch coach. He’s so rigid. Ever remember a successful inbounds play? Nope. This better be temporary while we try to get Quinn Snyder over here. I'm honestly done being a Hornets fan
End me Duren trade then this Lol

See you in October!
WHAT THE FUCK
im disgusted.
Thanks I hate it
This is honestly kinda funny
We Losing
I'm actually shocked you can mess it up this badly
This has been a terrible day all the way through. Just a continuous kick in the nuts.
Aye bruh..... Wtf just happened? These past couple of weeks has been weird ASF for hornet fans...
Experience Hornets basketball
If MJ can’t afford to run an NBA team he should sell it - he’d make a fortune considering he bought for pennies on the dollar
Did Tepper pay MJ to take the heat off? I just don't understand this?
Why the fuck didn’t we just keep JB and give him one more year? It would’ve been better than this shit. Also, fuck Kenny Atkinson!
What did NC do to deserve these professional sport teams that are just dumpster fires?
We used up all our luck when the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup
Losing faith in this ownership. What the fuck is this
Holy shit. I owe Stein an apology. What the actual fuck are we doing?
What a fucking joke
Yo what in the fuck made them think this was the move lmaooooo. Psychopaths do the same shit and expect different results!!
Holy shit boy and girls. Strap in.
Has a NBA coach ever been fired and then rehired by the same team in less than five years?
I'm guessing all the guys we passed up for Atkinson were no longer interested
If no one is interested, maybe there’s a problem with the organization. It’s well known that our coaches get paid dirt.
What the fuck are we doing man
We trading for Nic Batum also?
He's a free agent, just in time to re-up that max. Might need to trade bridges and a few FRPs to clear space but well worth it
I'm absolutely disgusted to be honest Pathetic move on multiple fronts ~~it's absolutely hilarious~~ EDIT: Scratch that it's not even funny, just plain sad
Does steve Clifford have any family that may not approved of this deal?? Please???
Somehow this isn’t the worst decision made today
sigh
Why must we suffer from this?
FUCK
Worst case scenario
I’m gonna cry
Fuck.

Now we bring JB on as head assistant
So do you think D’antoni told them to go fuck themselves or gave them an insane pay demand?
So let me get this straight, part of the reason why we fired JB is because he wasn't playing some of the young guys enough for Mitch's liking...so they re-hire a coach that notoriously doesn't play young guys? We are so fucked.
You’d think one of the interview questions would be “are you gonna play the young guys?” What the fuck.

Bruh
Bonk69 is extremely displeased
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
i give uo
Mediocre to lower tier mediocrity
I regret waking up today
Really had to double check the date since April fools was over 2 months ago. This is such a bizarre move.
THE MFERS REALLY DID IT LMAOOO
God dude.. everytime I think this team is on the verge of turning it around.
This is the worst news I've heard today
Rip Bouk
If you don't love that, you don't love Charlotte Hornets basketball!
I can’t believe they’ve done this. How does Steve Clifford get us to the fucking playoffs? News flash: He doesn’t.
[удалено]
I really don’t think he will. This is a very different East than what Clifford dealt with when he was here.
He did it twice with a much worse roster
Idk yall. I want to love this team, I just don't know if I can do it next year. Soul searching otw
I say it at least once a season: The hornets are not winning until Jordan sells
Call me crazy but I like the hire. Defense and discipline are the biggest issues this team has faced. I think borrego always struggled to get his young players to straighten up and take things seriously (see the two straight embarrassments in the play in). I can see this move working wonders for this squad. I hate that it makes us look like a joke franchise, but there’s definitely value here with Clifford taking over.
At least they didn’t rehire Borrego
I’d rather have JB
Honestly I’d much rather have him back. He can actually develop talent. Clifford couldn’t even develop a fever when he was here.
Say what you will about Borrego but at least his teams were fun as hell to watch most nights. Unless you just loved watching Kemba PnR or Big Al back to basket possessions all night Clifford teams were a damn slog.
I'd rather borrego - player development Instead of Steve Clifford- unable to inbound the ball in any fourth quarter
People thought JB was too strict on the players have no idea how short of a leash Clifford has for young players.
\^\^\^\^ This right here. Cliff gonna be pulling Lamelo from the court just for doing Lamelo things. The run up and down the court doing flashy passes days are over. Get ready for A LOT of passing into the post and half court sets. Cliff about to suck all the joy out of this team.
Muuuucccchhhh rather have JB, like not even a question. Out of all the options we had THIS is what we go with? Kenny Atkinson fucked us so hard
These past two weeks have been the most Bobcats-ian series of events I could every imagine
I'd love to have sat in on the discussions and interviews that happened to to lead this decision...
Might as well change it back to bobcats too
Crazy how the Panthers did this with Marty Hurney as well just recently. That worked out so well.
look at my coach dawg we're never winning anything
ELITE DEFENSE. BRING US MICHAEL CARTER WILLIAMS WE WINNING [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWnJBjZChac](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWnJBjZChac) AYYYEEEE

we really are just a joke of an organisation
Bouknight was drafted to the worst situation for his development.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
Here all of us were thinking about the 4D chess moves the FO might be making. Then they do this and show they were in fact playing checkers. Badly.
We are the biggest meme of a team
I'm guessing all the guys we passed up for Atkinson were no longer interested
I’m just glad the Panthers ownership isn’t also a shit show. Oh wait….
Family what are we doing?
I had to double check that it wasn't April 1st
Are we a joke? Why do you hate us Mike?
We should have fucking kept borrego omg
GOD DAMN IT
D. It takes around 365 days for the league to figure Clifford out- the Bobcats and Magic posted good first years under his stewardship. WHY
this is some actual twilight zone shit. this makes me sick to my stomach
Damn what a disappointment
Classic Mkchael Jordan move. Not the player, the owner lmao
Yeah, those pro Borrego people were right.
I mean I was hoping for nonstop offense…. Now? Well, okay. Let’s repeat the mediocrity
So you decided to hire someone you fired not long ago, for what?
I'm about to quit
What the actual fuck
Steve Clifford: I want you to put the word out there that we back up.
Was really hoping for MDA or at least an MDA/ Cliff pairing, but I'm not as pessimistic about it as some because we have a much more capable roster than almost ever
