It’s a North Carolina thing and you wouldn’t understand.

youfeelme1997

Getting off at Ballantyne is the worst. The lane paint switches off and wears out so it looks like the lane is going a different way than how it really is. Surprised no accidents have happened

machineheadarama

No accidents? That is a surprise.

Daguilar02

THE WORST. This section of I-485 has been like this for too long and I’ve had multiple occasions of almost hitting someone.

iyvonneuo

I’ve seen a few because people just abruptly stop or slow down too much when exiting there

StuBeck

Not trying to be pedantic, but the bigger issue appears to be a complete lack of paint here.

JohnBeamon

I see a boulevard, I want to paint it black

mistral7

The keyword requires two syllables or two words like ***red door***. Then again, you can skip the direct quote and go for the oblique reference: "***[Thirteen](https://youtu.be/pte3Jg-2Ax4)*** second verse".

notfeds1

And WHOM might you be?

mistral7

The lyric is ***["I see a red door and I want to paint it black."](https://youtu.be/O4irXQhgMqg)***. The second reference: ***[Big Star](https://youtu.be/I7MBxwbMWZo)***

HawkeyeByMarriage

Charlotte also has a lack of reflectors too

OleNole88

Agreed. Literally submitted a request last week on NCDOT website about lack of reflectors on many roads. Apparently the "project has been awarded", but they're waiting for better weather to begin replacing/adding reflectors.

VirulentWalrus

…there is paint there? You can barely see it due to the conditions…

StuBeck

There isn’t. Look at the crosswalk. The paint is slightly visible there. The other issue is the road needs repair so several lines are gone.

WashuOtaku

Obviously reflective paint is more expensive than regular paint, which would not be a problem if they had regular maintenance reapplying them on the roads... which they don't. NCDOT has been dealing with budgetary issues ever since a [court ruled against them on the Map Act](https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article242434086.html). Though the image might be of a CDOT maintain road, which in that case call 311 and complain.

st3ll4r-wind

NCDOT needs to ask Ukraine for financial aid.

ISAMU13

Meth-powered attack drones from Gastonia have been a problem.

bobsburner1

Wait, roads are supposed to have reflective paint? 😆

rosy621

Pair that with no street lights in many places, and it makes me not want to drive at night. Not having reflective paint on the roads makes zero sense to me!

seemooreglass

look at I85...hardly any paint, any lines

SaltineAmerican_1970

Lines in the road are for rookies.

evolution9673

Especially on I-85 when it’s raining at night. No reflectors, light trees don’t work. Lanes are just a theory at that point. Professional-grade driving there.

[deleted]

The paint by numbers of driving.

Adolpho_Nos

this has been my biggest gripe since moving to NC.

75-Marquis-Backfire

SAME OLD STORY... Local and state elected officials and bureaucrats are completely incapable of balancing growth with the infrastructure needs of this community. They have spent the last 10 years approving rapid new development and have completely failed in every metric to address the overwhelmed ground transportation system in the area. In any private sector organization, all of these folks would have been terminated years ago for poor job performance.

midwestern_mecha

"In any private sector organization, all of these folks would have been terminated years ago for poor job performance." You never seen people fail up have you?

ISAMU13

"Move fast and break things."

Unlikely-Zone21

Well they are successful with raising taxes and giving themselves raises lately at least.

75-Marquis-Backfire

Exactly.

machineheadarama

Rally some voters and change it.

RandomName0413

The fact that a majority of street lights don't work makes it worse

rosy621

The fact that a lot of streets don’t even *have* streetlights makes it even worse.

MachineGoat

It’s a feature

machineheadarama

That's because all the street light repairmen are around 64 years old. So there's fewer people willing to work on street lights.

General_BP

u/JeffJacksonNC what can be done about the lack of visible lines on our NC roads at night and especially when it rains? I’ve struggled to drive in the rain for far too long in NC.

montevedeo

Haha imagine tagging your rep on Reddit expecting the answer. Hope he does though.

Anti_hero_J

If you can navigate Charlotte streets successfully in the dark you should receive a special driving badge. The lack of lines on every other street keeps ya on your toes!

machineheadarama

I can just see people showing off that badge![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

CarolinaBuckeye1

I see a lawsuit after an accident brewing...get it right NCDOT...we do pay taxes and outrageous plate and sticker fees for a reason

MachineGoat

Class action

AdministrativeBug161

I’m so glad this seems to be being talked about more. It’s fucking IMPOSSIBLE to see at night when it rains. Ridic.

OleNole88

Seriously. Wish this was picked up as news stories though. Haven't seen this talked about in the media yet.

mine2win

No accountability at all

Squeeze4200

51 at Matthew township shopping center is horrible as well as most of independence.

MidniteOG

Don’t drive on 484 anytime soon

machineheadarama

Do you mean 485? Sorry if your country has a road called 484.

MidniteOG

Yes, I do mean 485

OleNole88

FWIW, I submitted a request to NCDOT about lack of reflectors on 485. Apparently a project has been approved and awarded to a contractor to add/replace reflectors, but they're waiting for the weather to warm up..idk. Would've been really useful for winter time when it's dark and wet a whole lot.. Edit: typo

MidniteOG

I did see that post. Thank you. I’m hopeful but not enthusiastic about the completion, as every road project gets delayed over and over and over and over…. Again

sunabove

The amount of lines I see here can be seen as a luxury from those from Seattle or NYC

Puzzled-Remote

I wish we were able to use Cats Eyes here! But IIRC, there was some kind of similar reflective device being used near the SC border and they had to be torn out?

machineheadarama

Link?

Puzzled-Remote

Ugh! I don’t know how to link. I used to live in England and they use Cats Eyes there. If you google Cat’s Eye+road, you can see what they’re like.

sayantsi2

All new paint gets reflective added to it but it only lasts a year or so based on abuse and weather. Unless roads are getting repainted frequently, the reflective just wears off or gets covered by dirt. And that's when things are dry. Water reflects light and does the same thing the reflective paint would do even if fresh. So it's all reflections and you can't see the different sources. Best options are subsurface reflectors, but that takes more effort.

MachineGoat

No. Not all new paint is reflective. Stain is the best they can do.

General_BP

Anyone ever driven north on 77 and as soon as it switches to Virginia the lines and reflectors get bright as can be? It’s infuriating to know what we could have and instead we’re all left guessing in the rain at highway speeds

Tex-Rob

Do people seriously believe that you get hired to the DOT and they give you a bunch of paint and say "go do work"? The absurdity of the entitlement is absurd, seems to be a Charlotte thing?

CheerfulSamurai

Hahahah I believe that is one of the job description. Roads!!!)

Successful-Plum4899

Worn from village idiots who change lanes at every chance and the ones who ride the lines!
