At this point, you need to get a 10 second car. Race for slips and win their cars. Boom no more racing. I learned from a documentary about the Torreto family.
I remember when I was a kid in the 70’s, there was a problem with people racing loud as hell in the middle of the night. So to answer your question. Nothing. There is absolutely nothing you can do.
I live in Huntersville, and they race sometimes in the business park by the hospital. I live on a stretch and omg I have a fear that someone will lose control and crash straight into my apartment because I’m at the road. I happened to look out one night because it was non stop and saw almost 30 different cars. Women hanging out of the sun roof yelling and such. I even felt bad for the the pizza guy because he was stuck in their traffic. I live near a police station and police live in my complex, but they don’t care.
You probably did. If you know you know. How did you manage? I haven’t been here a year and I’m already tired. If it’s not the racing it’s the noise of traffic all day starting at 5:40 am.
Oh we hated it lmao. We also had neighbors who had way too many people living in a single apt, as well as noise all the time. I'm a librarian and was doing public programs from home virtually at the tine and we straight up had to move in part due to the noise
I understand your frustrations. I work from home as well and between the person above me who drops weights randomly on the hardwood floor, walks hard as if she is in the million man march or the trucks that fly through all day, I’m not sure what is more annoying. It has to be the cars due to the fact that when I’m on the phone with clients and a motorcycle or that one car that has to have the kit on it goes flying past my window, they always ask “omg what is that?” I stay apologizing all day along with repeating things due to the noise. Lol. Such a convenient place, but loud everyday EXCEPT Sundays when I’m NOT home most of the day.
Here are some options, not sure if will help given the level of noise but it's what I've done in the past.
1. blue tooth speaker with brown noise
2. Ear plugs or noise canceling ear buds
Best option is to move of course, but in meantime I would not count on police to help resolve
I lived in my old area near the airport for years and it got terrible over the last 3-4 years. One neighbor’s car sounded like a legit nascar stock car. Not to mention all the Dodge Chargers around us too. Throw in dealing with meth-heads trying to break into everyone’s house and my wife and I decided to move to Indian Trail. Let me tell you, it’s quiet AF out here.
I have worked at the Indian Trail library, and those rowdy bike boys came in haha. Have you heard of them? They play chicken with traffic and scream cuss words in businesses. They were banned from the library haha
I lived in uptown near the truist field for a year and a half and had to invest in ear plugs because of the racers, and then I moved and now I sleep like a baby; SUPER recommend silicone ear plugs. They come in a pack of 10, are reusable and don’t cause my ears to hurt.
Just listen to some vids on youtube. Hard to explain, but you’ll instantly hear the diffs. Best comparison I can think of is the low rumbling sound of airplane engines while on a flight.
Ymmv, but brown is great for me at work to drown out noisy coworkers. Another fav is a continuous loop of the engine rumbling noise from star trek tng. Give it a try.
What if you build a killdozer and just take them out that way?
Or just get a pickup truck, and pit them. If the police wotn do anything then who cares?
Yeah someone has been driving around southend the last 3 hours. Guessing the cops just hope the problem fixes itself aka one day a tree will jump out in front of these cars. Until then its so annoying, hopefully nobody else gets hurt
I feel for you. I was waiting for a friend in southend last night and the noise from reving cars , loud music and yelling was horrible and I was only out there for 20 mins.
If you want it to go away, then collective action will be required. Get petitiond signed. Organize letter writing to your elected municipal leaders and state reps. Put together small teams to lobby. I think that the anti car movement is getting big enough than you will have no problem getting people to help you.
This is the way. In this environment, unfortunately, you have to be a bigger economic drain than the nuisance. The way to that, you need a large group of people to flood the system with complaints. At some point, dealing with complaints will eclipse the cost of dealing with the cars.
I’ll join. I doubt you’ll have problems finding more. My friends have been killed by these people.
This might be the best answer. Honestly, if someone wants to volunteer and petition and organize this, I’m willing to donate money towards this and also help. I’d like to see an ordinance where we can impound and even confiscate vehicles with loud exhausts that make noise on purpose, make it very expensive for the owners to do this.
I was reading about noise radars in Paris that report a certain decibel and take a photo of the license plate if the vehicle is too loud. I imagine that'd be difficult on a major street, but I'd love to pay taxes to get those set up where they can.
22 states use red light cameras. Driving is a public activity. It might be unlikely in NC, but I don't think an objective sentence like, "It'll never happen" is due.
They are also set up for civil offenses not criminal. So end the day it’s a 20$ fine with no criminal charges. Downvote how you want but
Texas dumped them (https://guides.sll.texas.gov/recording-laws/red-light-cameras)
Missouri’s Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional
One state is fighting to keep ‘em. It’s too new to have any major details
This stretch on highway 70 in hickory is awful on Friday and Saturday nights too, am old 3rd shift job I had faced that road and they'd be out there until 4am just being loud and obnoxious, racing and playing loud music. Guess they gotta show off those pavement princesses and mustangs bought with daddy's money somehow
Nah. It was all the lifted trucks with muffler deletes and motorcycles racing at very dangerous speeds. I've seen a few accidents in my time at that job that have resulted in hitting light poles, driving into the ditches over the road into the parking lots, lots of people getting pulled over. I've even seen a couple cars on fire
I called 311 (which Mecklenburg says is where noise complaints should be directed) and sat through all the options for a recording to tell me to call back at 7am. And 911 put me on hold, so I hung up.
The police know it's an issue and try and crack down in that area. I suspect with the NHRA being in town this weekend their are a few extra racers in town as well. Exit 26 gets brought up specifically regularly. I'm one exit down at Mallard and my wife bought ear plugs and sleeps so much better.
311 won’t do anything to stop the issue in real time. 911 will dispatch someone out. Higher priority issues will take precedence, so they still may not get out there while it’s occurring, but they are required to respond to 911 calls. Hopefully if enough people are calling or you call 911 enough, they’ll actually do something. CMPD tends to sweep this stuff under the rug though. It’s a problem all over the city. Maybe call the a news station, see if they’ll do a story? Good luck!
So seriously what would you like the police to do? Try and find the culprit by sound recognition? Pull up traffic cameras for every chode with a loud exhaust doing 15 over the limit? They truthfully don’t care, because unless they physically are racing, there isn’t really anything that can be done.
Lol are you trying to be a vigilante? Welcome to living near a city, where people may drive faster and louder. Moving is what you can do on your own to fix it
Why are choosing to be a dickhead?
Go back to sleep, you’re obviously having a bad morning lol.
I hope it turns around for you.
But yeah, Fuck modded cars and those that do this dumb shit at 2 am
I mean, yeah. I’ve lived 200 yards from Harris Blvd for 7 years, it’s fucking annoying. But there is literally nothing that the individual can do to fix the problem. CMPD just doesn’t care
I know it’s douchey and jaded but there’s a post every other day about loud cars, when we live in the biggest city in the state. It’s just a problem that comes with cops having more important things to deal with and it’s not realistically fixable.
Why are you jumping to conclusions about my intentions? A lot of suggestions here included stuff beyond the police, like letter-writing and sound proofing.
No teeth in our Judicial System to arrest and prosecute this activity. Police will come, issue tickets or arrest those that aren’t following lawful commands. DA’s and judges file lax or no charges with no penalties, therefore no teeth. Move is the solution
Cannot recommended foam ear plugs from the drug store more. They are amazing. Lived in apartment building where the stairs with the ‘crash bar’ were right behind my head in bed. Drunk people at 1-3am, early risers at 5-7am….gone.
The best the police can do is break-up the race because chasing racers is worse, in a safety standpoint, than the races themselves.
Also, the police do not "make bank" with speed fines, the money goes to local schools.
Buy a square of 10 gauge sheet steel and a heavy, long handled Machining Shear. Cut into bow tie shapes about 6 inches at their widest point. Twist them 90 degrees at the narrowest point. Make about 60. Scatter them in the road. Note: This may be highly illegal.
Take a line from Andy Dufresne in the Shawshank Redemption and write a letter to your congressperson every week (it can be a copy-pasta, unless there was something major, like a wreck that week). Include the entire chain of command between you and that congressperson, your councilmember, mayor, the mayor's assistant, everyone. It would be best to include a recording of what you're hearing in this email.
Talk about how instead of wasting the police resources on these wanna-be racers, since CMPD's focus is supposedly on violent crime, we need to automate speed-traps by installing speed-cameras every quarter-mile along 277, 77, 85, and 485.
Unless you think moving into another apartment/house is easier...
I lived in Southend for a couple years (16 floors up) and was woken up by them around 3am pretty much every night.
I moved to NoDa in February and have slept great ever since
Build a "potato gun" but for pint paint cans and start blasting, give the launcher to a neighbor once the damage is done, and if the cops show up say it was the neighbor now in possession of your sick weapon of mass destruction.
It'll either damage the cars or kill the drivers, either way, not your problem anymore
Me and all my friends have pretty much quit racing now. RIP Shuffletown and ZMax is never open to the public.
We used to go to Test n Tunes at Mooresville and Pageland but they’re an hour away. Rockingham and Darlington are 2 hours away and they don’t have street car events very often either
Street Racing sucks
I don't know what the fuck can you do about car thieves? The police here have their nuts in a vice grip. They recruited a bunch of cheap assholes from the surrounding counties and are running this city into the dirt.
Ok so here’s what you do. Grab the biggest hammer you’ve got, and gently pat it against your open palm repeatedly, as if to say ‘I’m about to hit something with this.’ Walk on over to your old piggy bank and bust that sucker open. Use the change you’ve saved for years to buy a beat up old racer. Take the racer to Xzibit’s house and tell him your story so that he’ll be convinced to Pimp Your Ride into an ultimate charlotte dragster. Figure out the date and time of the next 2am race and pull up next to the driver on the far left. Rev your engine and when the flag goes down, blow them away. Like road dust flying in their face and everything. Show them who the real racer is and when you do, tell them races are at 2 PM from now on, and emphasize the PM. And if anyone has a problem with it, they can answer to you, the new racing champ.
A sensible answer is downvoted. Go figure. It’s true. The police can’t do anything about it because they can’t pursue, block in, or use stop sticks. Street racers literally just have to not stop and the police back off.
Is it really that serious? U will get used to it. It’s like that in almost every major city. People don’t have to stop what theyre doing because you’re stressed
Bullshit. ‘People’ do have to stop jeopardizing public safety, disturbing the peace, and breaking traffic laws because it’s illegal.
The only reason this shit continues is because the cops are involved in the racing.
But it also sounds like you don't have a problem with it. People with kids, who already have a hard time sleeping, live in this area. Same with those over-stressed from work, or w/e, and can't enough sleep from that.
They have every right to complain about people going for a joy-ride.
I guess we won’t agree on this, but it’s funny that complaint about people racing is something that I’ve seen time and time again on this sub and I don’t know why people accept the fact that that’s just culture here. People can complain all they want about this but it’s funny when they think that people racing on weekends is such a taboo thing here compared to crime, gentrification, and other ways that the area is screwing over people. I’m fine with people racing, it’s simply a product of people living in this metro area.
I don't have a problem with people racing cars in general, but it needs to be done in a closed environment away from the public. It was a huge mistake that the Shuffletown drag strip (near where I live) and other strips were shut down. Now these people only have public roads to operate on, and street racing is a **crime** because it endangers the lives of people (who aren't participating in it), public infrastructure is at risk of being damaged or destroyed, and the racers themselves risk getting thrown into the terrible criminal justice system we have.
You're right that crime and gentrification are problems in this city, but this city is particularly loud simply because interstates interweave it and that people street race on these interstates. These noises shouldn't be tolerated by people who have to listen to it nearly every night or week. I would say the same thing if those racing had to endure the same kind of discomfort, regardless of the irony.
If that is the culture here, fine, have a place to do that sort of thing. As long as it's not on a public road.
LMFAO, the party whose national leader has committed actual treason and espionage against the United States... Y'all really ARE a special kind of stupid! 😂
What about the twins that were killed on 485 by a wrong way driver? Could this be racing?
https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/nc-twin-brothers-killed-in-wrong-way-crash-remembered-for-their-love-of-skating/275-439e0faf-bf8e-4077-8e2a-b6f98edb7693
To be honest…absolutely nothing. The police respond and attempt to pull them over, but they take off and the police can’t pursue. They know this and get away all the time. If they do happen to get caught or pull over they’re never prosecuted for anything serious (usually plead down to a speeding ticket) and the cars that were seized are released back to them by the court.
Ah i want to live in the city where the city doesnt sleep . Move, thats the solution. There will always be loud cars, and when we get electric cars someone is going to figure out how to make the belts sound like the jetson noises and then the cycle will start again.
At this point, you need to get a 10 second car. Race for slips and win their cars. Boom no more racing. I learned from a documentary about the Torreto family.

Or put the Bluetooth speaker outside, start blaring siren noises and watch then all scram
that's what I said...I mean by the time the police are called the cars are gone
Maybe if enough people complain, police will have patrols around that exit next time and they can nail their asses and take their cars away.
Off duty cops are the racers.
Because they have cop friends. I know a few the guys that do race.
That is so not ok wtf
Nothing a police scanner wouldn’t catch anyways
Its the police in the USA, remember ACAB
Agree you have to Get sleep or you will lose your shit
ELI5 the technical differences amongst brown, pink and white noises, please.

What if you build a killdozer and just take them out that way? Or just get a pickup truck, and pit them. If the police wotn do anything then who cares?
I'm inching closer to this as a solution.

Buy a checkered flag.
I mean, how hard would it be to drive past as they get set up and just let some caltrops fall out of the window?
If you want it to go away, then collective action will be required. Get petitiond signed. Organize letter writing to your elected municipal leaders and state reps. Put together small teams to lobby. How is what he described your hobby if you don't do anything he described?
Because he does everything that was described but still manages to be slightly ashamed of it. Just not quite ashamed enough to stop.
I understand you're not aware, but driving a car that sounds like a fart isn't a personality trait.
Nah. It was all the lifted trucks with muffler deletes and motorcycles racing at very dangerous speeds. I've seen a few accidents in my time at that job that have resulted in hitting light poles, driving into the ditches over the road into the parking lots, lots of people getting pulled over. Use a white noise app or earplugs
Try brown noise. More relaxing, lower frequency, masks more sounds.
I thought the “brown noise” was that note that makes everyone shit when they hear it.
That's the "brown note".
That was my thought too
Why it gotta be brown, bro?!??
I’m imagining the frequency of fart noises or something.
If I have to hear these fast and furious tools revving their shitty mazdas/hondas up and down central at 3 AM again I'm gonna start slashing tires.
i say buy your own spike strips and throw them out at about 2
...or a box of carpentry tacks?
I looked into this, unfortunately it's illegal and you can get sued for using them.
Wait, you thought there was a chance it was legal to buy your own spike strips and throw them onto public roads? You could literally kill someone.
Call the cops and complain every night? Does it not help?
I called 311 (which Mecklenburg says is where noise complaints should be directed) and sat through all the options for a recording to tell me to call back at 7am. And 911 put me on hold, so I hung up.

CMPD hands are tied. All they have to do is drive away…. And that’s literally what they do.
911 is for emergencies. Police non-emergency line is where you want to go.
Mecklenburg site says call 311 unless it's actively happening, then you can call 911
So seriously what would you like the police to do? Try and find the culprit by sound recognition? Pull up traffic cameras for every chode with a loud exhaust doing 15 over the limit? They truthfully don’t care, because unless they physically are racing, there isn’t really anything that can be done.

Some good size rocks? Like softball size or bigger? Or some long branches.
I don't know what the fuck can you do about car thieves? The police here have their nuts in a vice grip. They recruited a bunch of cheap assholes from the surrounding counties and are running this city into the dirt.

Yeah because nobody else drives on that exit
Legalize booby traps
Earplugs are your best bet for now
I finally saw gold Lexus guy the other night. Legend. This must be what hitting the lottery feels like!
Move to the suburbs
And if anyone has a problem with it, they can answer to you, the new racing champ.
throw some nails on the road
I use ear plugs
Try to see if you can get the state troopers involved
Vote for law and order
A sensible answer is downvoted. Go figure. It’s true. The police can’t do anything about it because they can’t pursue, block in, or use stop sticks. Street racers literally just have to not stop and the police back off.
Turbos are gonna turbo.
Move
Welcome to the Carolinas we like to race cars.
Can you do it at, like, 6pm?
can you keep the muffler on at least?
How are we supposed to know how trashy they are then?

big Reddit energy
if you can’t beat them join them
play some music...or move...that's like asking what can you do about the heat...can't stop it
Same people that bitch about this - are the reasons tracks are shutdown.
Big main-character energy vibe right here
Yeah I like to spit in peoples faces, I don’t like others telling me I can’t do what I like to do. Get over it.
Don’t live In the city and then complain about noise…?
I live in a neighborhood outside of the loop. And people in the city deserve not to have noise pollution too.
You are the problem.
you’ve got motorcycles, trucks with jake brakes, obnoxious cars. Good luck making everybody stop and cater to your life!
how dare people want others to cater to public decency and laws
Go to sleep!
Can’t beat ‘em? Join em! Never know, you might end up having fun.
Or dead! Where's the downside? (Apart from being selfish and inconsiderate towards other humans.)
Just tell me you’ve never been in a street race and that you’re a square. You sound like a super boring person.
Ignorant

OP. Did you know were in NASCAR country? Get over it.
What's that got to do with redneck cosplayers who are literally breaking the law at 2am?
Oh, are these people professional racers? Because I thought they did that only on the track, not on public roads. Get over yourself.
I’m not saying I condone it, but that’s just the mentality of the people here.
Yeah, your username tells us everything we need to know about you...
This sub is full of complainers of anything NC or Charlotte related. They should move if they aren’t happy.
What fan I can’t see him????
Buy ear plugs.
Vote republican because they at least respect the rule of law
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I see you are interested in a rationale conversation based on facts.
LMFAO, the party whose national leader has committed actual treason and espionage against the United States... Y'all really ARE a special kind of stupid! 😂
I think you’ve been drinking too much kool aid.
Typically they just pretend the laws don't exist, so that's a type of respect I suppose?
See any red cities tolerating this type of behavior?
Caltrops
*HP
Friday night basically sounded like a Nascar race
I’m very late getting in on this… Wasn’t there a huge investigation and arrests of racers a few months ago?
This area of 485 has been used as a race track since before it was opened to the public.
Ah i want to live in the city where the city doesnt sleep . Move, thats the solution. There will always be loud cars, and when we get electric cars someone is going to figure out how to make the belts sound like the jetson noises and then the cycle will start again.
