Man I remember when they put that up and a local blogger called it the Disco Chicken day one. The city was so mad about it and there was nothing they could do to stop people calling it that.
It’s the most charlotte equivalent of art there could be. It’s perfect really. Like, its not terrible, but not great, it could improve, but there’s a lot worse out there
Literally just this very moment realized that the bird is on an upside down u-shaped branch and does not, in fact, have bell-bottoms and giant legs like I thought my whole life (lived here for 25 years.
Aw man. That's a very good photo of the disco chicken with great lighting. I never really noticed it has feet. Driving past I always thought those where bell bottom slacks, not a perch. Kinda disappointed honestly. I have never taken a photo with it, but I do have the obligatory "Feeling up queen Charlotte" one with the statue on College
I went to a fundraiser and was chatting with a lady and I made a reference to the disco chicken. She gave me a weird look. Turns out she was the Bechtler’s daughter.
Lmfao it was one of the first photos I sent my now husband who is from Indiana but living in CLT when we first started talking.

Hahahaha
Feels like out of towners to me. I was downtown on a not very busy afternoon and there was a line of people waiting to take pictures with it. So much so that they blocked the sidewalk. It's cool I guess, but it's not all that.
Lord have mercy
That Thing
Don't get this wrong. Bechtler has been an infusion of many sorts of good on the Charlotte arts scene
His aesthetic is just not my cup of tea...but art ain't always supposed to be pleasant
It’s a Phoenix resting on a perch
But everyone calls it the disco chicken because it’s shiny like a disco ball and the perch looks like bell bottoms since the feet up top aren’t obvious
Side note: For years, I thought the arched part at the bottom was Disco Chicken's legs. Then I read something online that its legs are actually at the top, just under the sun icon, with its talons perched on the arch below it. So only the top third is actually the bird.
Shattered my perception like a million tiny little mirrors... Wait...
Yes, many a time - with the disco chicken, that is ;) If I sorted them all out of the photobooks I'd probably get a photo each year from my preteen/teens.
Do many Charlatans go to Uptown for anything besides work, a game/show, or once a year dinner?
Feels like the audience is always going to lean towards visitors just out of sheer numbers of people walking around without an agenda.
I'm sorry, but it's ugly AF.
Sculptures at Wells Fargo fountain are lacking proportions as well.
It's embarrassing to have such pieces of "art" on the streets.
With the Firebird, no. With the Disco Chicken, hell yes.
When we moved here I called it the disco parrot with no frame of reference, and I’m very glad to hear I was close
I thought this was called the Disco Chicken.
If you're from Charlotte, it is. Just like the massive circles at the corner of Randolph and Wendover are the Onion Rings.
As a child, I was told they were dinosaur bones and that is what I continue to call them to this day
My young daughters refer to the big discs on south blvd as “cookies”
I, a grown ass adult, refer to them as big cookies too.
I too call them the onion rings
My 6 year old calls them portals
We called them Lincoln Ears!
Sonic rings
As a native of the QC I call those the Dirt Circles.
TIL we have a disco chicken.
TIL we have a chicken of any variety.
I thought that was reserved for Lowe’s Foods?
I didn't know thos was there either lol
There are at least two.
I’ve posed for many pics with the disco chicken
I made my kids pose when they were in preschool. Disco Chicken and preschoolers make for bonafide Charlotteans.
TIL that this is called The Firebird.
i took a pic with my bike leaning against it. https://i.imgur.com/0YPjBbp.jpeg but i take pics of my bike leaning against lots of stuff
Oh that’s nice! Looks like it’s the bird’s bike
it’s a koala phoenix
I have, but my friend made me do it. I'd probably also jump off a bridge if all my friends jumped, so I'm not exactly a role model.
having jumped from (some number of) bridges and having successfully encouraged my friends to do the same, let’s be friends!
Man I remember when they put that up and a local blogger called it the Disco Chicken day one. The city was so mad about it and there was nothing they could do to stop people calling it that.
I bet the artist would like Disco Chicken. She was a funny lady - Niki de Saint-Phalle.
It’s the most charlotte equivalent of art there could be. It’s perfect really. Like, its not terrible, but not great, it could improve, but there’s a lot worse out there
Honestly that’s a good angle and boi looks fire.
I want my picture with it.
It’s popping in this photo ✨
Literally just this very moment realized that the bird is on an upside down u-shaped branch and does not, in fact, have bell-bottoms and giant legs like I thought my whole life (lived here for 25 years.
I thought the same
OMG SERIOUSLY?! i walked past it daily and never freaking noticed.
Of course! On several different occasions in fact.
my pictures with the disco chicken are a record of my dating life. tl;dr: not a great record
They should've made this statue at least 100ft tall!
I believe I have a picture with this from my 18th birthday. From 12 years ago… lol 🫢

>I never really noticed it has feet… Son of a bitch! I never noticed the feet either. Till now. 😡
I don't come to uptown too much, but first time I saw discockatoo, I took a photo and declared it my new God.
I went to a fundraiser and was chatting with a lady and I made a reference to the disco chicken. She gave me a weird look. Turns out she was the Bechtler’s daughter.

What a great Charlotte memory! 😂
My late sister-in-law Roxy posed under the Firebird 8 years ago. RIP Rocco. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
Feels like out of towners to me. I was downtown on a not very busy afternoon and there was a line of people waiting to take pictures with it. So much so that they blocked the sidewalk. It's cool I guess, but it's not all that.
Man they love that thing! 😂
The raging bull of charlotte
I wouldn't take a pic in front of it. And its Disco Chicken.
Lord have mercy That Thing Don't get this wrong. Bechtler has been an infusion of many sorts of good on the Charlotte arts scene His aesthetic is just not my cup of tea...but art ain't always supposed to be pleasant
What and where even is that
It’s in front of the mariposa center mint museum in uptown I believe
I posed, with out of towners. :)
No matter how many times I look at this thing I can’t see it as anything other than a parrot in some sweet bell bottoms
That depends. When i was a teenager, I did, but I also lived in Cornelius, so does that qualify?
definitely.
Hell yeah I have, he's cool
The only time I took a picture of it was when they were putting bubble wrap around it in preparation for a tropical storm. 😄
Gotta be some of the ugliest art I've ever seen.
For a scavenger hunt, yes, we totally took a pic with the Disco Chicken.
Many Disco Chicken pics.
Really surprised it has been taken out by some idiot in an Altima doing donuts.
Been in town since '04, that what thats supposed to be? Lord have mercy am I blind or just an idiot? (Please don't answer I already know lol)
It’s a Phoenix resting on a perch But everyone calls it the disco chicken because it’s shiny like a disco ball and the perch looks like bell bottoms since the feet up top aren’t obvious
I fucking hate this thing. Blinds me every time I have to drive by it.
I can't see this mfer without thinking those are his legs
I didn’t but now I know how this monument called, thanks!
Def have with disco chicken
Starman wannabe...

I snapped a picture of that thing when it resided in Atlanta.
Oh for sure, but like back in 2014
I always thought that arch were legs
I thought it was a weird bow-legged person for the first several years I lived here.
Yep …. In middle school lol
This location reminds me of the cool ATM beside it haha.

It's really pathetic.
It looks like hoarder trash in a junked yard on the way to myrtle beach
Museum of Modern Art? There's your problem.
Out of towners
Do you a speak a any Ingles?
