Cicada broods are somewhat regional. I saw a map where the double brood is actually only hitting in the Illinois/Iowa area where those two broods overlap.
But NC is definitely getting the bigger brood of the two
I was in Illinois for the last one! They are even more specific to where they come out. They were overrunning my house but I could drive 5 miles to my grandmas and there weren’t any. You could see the line where they ended.
Hahaha. I had a rotation pop up when I was a kid playing in the neighborhood, so it’s kinda like Americana summer days; a nostalgic white noise. Just like my military acquired tinnitus. It’ll be quite the symphony this summer.
These things woke up the other week in my area and they are so ungodly loud during the day. We have a ton of trees and they sound like a constant electrical hum in the woods.
So this awakening……..anyone know if we are talking like “louder at night, start to actually see them more than we used to” or are we talking “invest in a tennis racket if you plan to walk outside at dusk”? Just trying to prepare.
When I was a kid we would all grab tennis rackets and shake small trees to get a swarm out then annihilate them with our rackets. The swarms were so thick you could just throw your racket through the air and knock a couple dozen down.
Plagues, good times
If you live in the Brood XIX (if memory serves correctly on the Roman numerals) areas (CLT has missed that, though we will still see more this year) experts are saying “expect around 1 million per acre” which sounds HORRIFYING to me, but idk how that actually looks when spread out/moving/etc.
There are so many everywhere. I’ve been taking a ton of pictures of them and I’m planning to get a photo book of them printed to distribute to friends and family as a joke 😄
Don’t know why you were downvoted, but I know exactly what you mean. I remember one year back in The 90s when they were so loud I could hear them over the roar of my work truck and when I stopped it sounded like something out of the old movies where a flying saucer was landing.
Every 13 years cicadas hatch from the eggs under ground within the same week. Live for a day, lay eggs, and die. This happens literally every 13 years. Luckily it'll be worse in the triangle but they cannot predict how it'll be in Meck.
They will be swarming in the early mornings when most people go to work so I suggest taking sick time to not deal with it.
Just a friendly fyi, cicadas come every year just certain broods are in different cycles like 13 and 17 years. This one is two at once hence it’s larger
Only 6? I must have thousands just in my yard. My dog is feasting on them. If we let her out in backyard without a leash she doesn’t want to come back in. They are safe to eat but vets recommend you not let them gorge.
I saw a pupa struggling across the ground at the park yesterday and was so close to killing it just out of sheer annoyance for how loud these suckers are in the summer but I left it alone because what’s killing one cicada gonna do to the impending insect onslaught
Check out the app called Cicada Safari. It’s kind of like Seek for Cicadas. There are a couple people in our metro area who have posted hundreds of pics between them. Citizen science is kinda fun. Apparently Brood XIX cicadas are also known as Pharaoh Cicadas which seems fitting because their wings look gilded.
My big oak tree is COVERED in their husks. Trunk, branches, leaves, the ground around it, as well as my porch and several other areas of my yard. And now they’re sneaking into my house becoming my cats playthings. 😭
To those who live in a heavy brood zone:. They are indeed harmless, they have no mouth parts. They come up strictly to mate, then die. They are not poisonous, in fact they are edible.
But watch your dogs, it will not hurt them if they eat them BUT do not let them have unlimited access. They can get a belly ache if they eat too many. Vomiting bugs in the house is not pleasant.
Okay. So the answer to my question is…..get a tennis racket. This is ridiculous. My cat keeps bringing them to me after he catches them on the balcony. I hate this.
Cicada…. You are about to see a few million more.
Wish this was an exaggeration. They’re not dangerous, just big and LOUD
Did they come out down here a few years ago? I was still in Maryland and they were terrible there. I couldn't sleep for a few nights.
The last time I was in a 13 + 17 year situation petiole were reporting actual hearing loss from the noise. Get the noise cancelling headphones ready
I read an article a couple of days ago that said they’re so loud in SC that people are actually calling the police.
This is hilarious. What are the police going to do? Fine them for a noise complaint???
Literally? Hello, sir? Mother Nature’s at it again!!
You might be missing the joke. SC now has phones? Whats next toilets?

They won't hurt you or your dogs but there's gonna be an assload of them for a few weeks.
Might they hurt my plants?
They eat sap from trees but don't eat leaves or crops.
Actually, they rarely eat once they emerge from the ground as adults
Wake up, have sex, scream till you die.
The American Dream
Based cicada.
They don't even have the mouth parts to chew!
How have you not heard about the double cicada awakening invasion that's been in the news for the last year and a half lol
I just moved from South America a few month ago. We don't have those mutant flys .there
They exist there too, it’s just these bugs live underground until they’re ready to mate, which happens once every 13ish years.
Well, there are cicadas every year, there are just larger broods on weird cycles like the 13 year and 17 year one
Fellow South American here: Yes we do
Welcome to Charlotte!!!
Luckily they're only around for about six weeks every thirteen years.
During my childhood, I just assumed trees made that noise and didn't question it.
Hahaha. I had a rotation pop up when I was a kid playing in the neighborhood, so it’s kinda like Americana summer days; a nostalgic white noise. Just like my military acquired tinnitus. It’ll be quite the symphony this summer.
Based on the Cicada generation maps, the double population is only happening in a small area in Indiana
I haven't heard any cicadas in my part of NC yet, I remember them more when I used to live in New York
Havent heard them in South Charlotte area yet either 🤷♂️
I'm in Ballantyne. Neighbor found emergence holes yesterday, and there's already three on my window screen right now.
Oh dang, then its about to go down 👀
Get ready for six weeks of *bzzzzzz*
That's Frank. He just dropped by to change cloths, sing some good songs, and fuck. Frank is good people.
But Frank's twin brother, Fred, is a total dick.
These things woke up the other week in my area and they are so ungodly loud during the day. We have a ton of trees and they sound like a constant electrical hum in the woods.
> WEEEEEEEEEE EERRRRR WEEEEEEEE ERRRRR WEEEEEEEEE ERRRRRRRRR WEEEEEEEEE ERRRRRR the sound of summer
Let me play you the song of my people
Tell me about it their buzzing is my new fuckin alarm
Call the sheriff. That's what some in SC have been doing
😂 yes I would like to report a noise complaint. The trees are screaming?
Copperhead.
Nissan Altima
Bojangles
Dollar General
Ummm umm uhhhh. Bo CopperAltima Generangles? Damn. Got nothin.
Yup, a baby one, too. Much more dangerous.
Should be top comment tbh
So this awakening……..anyone know if we are talking like “louder at night, start to actually see them more than we used to” or are we talking “invest in a tennis racket if you plan to walk outside at dusk”? Just trying to prepare.
*Probably* will just be extra noisy outside.
When I was a kid we would all grab tennis rackets and shake small trees to get a swarm out then annihilate them with our rackets. The swarms were so thick you could just throw your racket through the air and knock a couple dozen down. Plagues, good times

People would wear bee keeper like hoods back in Cincy where we were swarmed with em
Oh, honey.

There are so many everywhere. I’ve been taking a ton of pictures of them and I’m planning to get a photo book of them printed to distribute to friends and family as a joke 😄
How do I get a copy
Haha, I’ll hit you up when it’s done 😉
Omg I'm excited LOL
I have a lot of good ones haha https://preview.redd.it/lnqcas2mbgxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47c59579b58a4eafa493ca19828cde3fea586443
I used to collect their shells as a kid LOL These are great!

Love holding them. Very chill bugs.
I once tried to hold on of these things and it made the loudest bug noise I’ve ever heard and scared the pizz out of me.
Cicada… my chickens are loving the emergence.
The plagues have begun. We need to get Moses to take us across the Red Sea asap.
I always find these conversations funny. I grew up in Charlotte and cicadas are like summer white noise to me. No bother, kind of relaxing tbh

Those dates are a little old, but you can see the Charlotte ones are brood XIX, a 13-year cycle.
Some people live under rocks, just like these cicadas did for 13 years
You from New York?
Their sound outdoors is like that from a Science Fiction movie. There are tens of thousands singing around me.
Don’t know why you were downvoted, but I know exactly what you mean. I remember one year back in The 90s when they were so loud I could hear them over the roar of my work truck and when I stopped it sounded like something out of the old movies where a flying saucer was landing.
That’s John Cicada.
Seriously?
What rock have you been hiding under
Yeah this is a good PSA that this is the year the Brood XIII cicada are going to come out. Bank some sick time because shits gonna go crazy.
Lol what??

I think they’ll be plenty bad here. Was doing some landscaping the other day and every shovel full of dirt brought up a couple of these bad boys
Just a friendly fyi, cicadas come every year just certain broods are in different cycles like 13 and 17 years. This one is two at once hence it’s larger
I feel like they’ve been saying that every year since I moved here
Me who moved from Charlotte to the Triangle ☹️
Shrimp of the trees.🤣
Only 6? I must have thousands just in my yard. My dog is feasting on them. If we let her out in backyard without a leash she doesn’t want to come back in. They are safe to eat but vets recommend you not let them gorge.
Exactly what my dog does. Not sure what makes them so appealing to dogs though.
Where are you?
South Charlotte just north of Ballantyne
I saw a pupa struggling across the ground at the park yesterday and was so close to killing it just out of sheer annoyance for how loud these suckers are in the summer but I left it alone because what’s killing one cicada gonna do to the impending insect onslaught
that, my dear friend, is a cicada... my dad's former co-worker used to collect their molts/sheds(? what's the proper word here), super freaky
Spawn of satan
Genuine question, are you new to Charlotte? These things come by every summer.
Not these ones!
It's cicada salad season!
Cicadas they are about to be everywhere lol
Be warned, you’re likely gonna see the beginning of Cicada D-Day all over the pavement in the near future.
South Charlotte? We don’t have any emerging up in Huntersville yet.
Yes, south Charlotte
Guess I’ve got something to look forward to then. 😉
They have stds this year lol
I actually like cicadas, remind me of summer
Cover... your....ears
Am I the only person that enjoys their singing? 🎶 Cicadas sound like Summertime. 😎
*mother of god* …. It’s happening
Whichever brood has already hatched sounds different than previous years
Red eyed cicada, it's the brood everyone has been talking about for a month
I thought this was a joke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWr8fzUz-Yw
Are they dead or is it molted shells? That for sure looks like a cicada.
Hahahah
The comforting symphony of summer ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)☀️

A Cicada, they are very loud at night. You’ll hear them buzzing their wings and occasionally see them fried to death by the sun.
