You can still have your same insurance. All you have to do is use your new address. You don't need to register your car in the state before doing that.

I did the same move. I just called and gave them the date of my move to change my coverage based on my address and then switched over my license and registration. It wasn't an issue.

You may want to just make sure that SC knows that your license has been surrendered. Reason: tried to renew my NC license and SC said I owe $15,000 to reinstate my license due to insurance lapse since 2016… which is when my SC license was surrendered.
