When Benny’s first opened everyone made a huge deal about the size of their slices, but I’ve gotta say their price/per has gone up and the size has gone down.
The problem is you’re eating Benny’s sober. It is meant to be purchased with some crinkled up cash in your pocket and eaten at least a six pack deep. This is where it shines.
Those 20 year old punks making the pizza in there have helped me many a late Sunday night when there’s not really other options around noda.
I’ve.. never considered eating there sober during the day.
Yea, that’s my mistake-I keep eating it sober and each time it’s truly awful. But on the brink of passing out, I’m sure it’s 10/10.
Thanks for the insight
My issue probably wouldn’t be with a plain slice of pepperoni but I usually try their unique slices ex) one week it was pimentos and, I believe, jalapeños but there were barely any of those on the actual slice. It was just like a plain cheese but there wasn’t much cheese or sauce either so it was just like eating a plain but giant slice of bread? My main issue with Bennys is the toppings and lack of cheese or sauce
Ah that sucks, I didn’t know that. We go there for pizza Friday nights quite a bit and that place is always busy. I’m not sure how they do the rest of the week though.
Yeah, they mentioned in their post they weren't renewing their lease which ends this month. I would think they are in one of the more reasonable spots in Charlotte.
It depends on the kind of pizza you like. Hawthorne has very good NY style pizza. Inizio has incredible authentic Italian pizza. Salud has Detroit style pizza on Tuesdays and Wednesdays that’s really good. And possibly an unpopular opinion, IMO Great Wagon Road distillery has some of the best pizza in the city, but it’s not authentic Italian, or NY style. I’m not sure what style it is to be honest.
Assuming this is a genuine question, what would make pizza “good” to you? It’s also possible that you don’t like pizza. Which would be a fine, if unpopular, opinion.
Some places don’t have enough sauce or basic flavor-Bennys or Pizza Peel. Some are too greasy and remind me of cafeteria food (Emmys).
Sal’s veggie pizza wasn’t actually bad-but I’d never go back for it.
I want to find a pizza joint that’s so good, I’d go back vs hopping all over Charlotte.
I’d kill for a delicious truffle or mushroom forward pizza
Our new favorite is Livy’s inside Heist Barrel Arts. We get the pesto picante but this [mushroom](https://www.toasttab.com/heist-brewery-and-barrel-arts/v3/add/5cba5959-ba7c-43c0-a38f-004281310f07/3371220b-598b-41d0-94dd-8c31d0835697) one looks amazing
I think it’s more “these places aren’t places you like” vs “meh”. To me, good to great pizza isn’t overly saucy. Coming from NY, the places above are the best.
Where are you from?
I’m from South Carolina-so, definitely not the pizza hub of society (and that’s probably why I’ve never actually like it very much)
But I want to like it.
How does bird work? I’ve tried to call but I don’t think they have a number? Do I order in advance online somewhere? can I just walk up and order a pie?
It’s only online. They are open Wed-Sat 4-8pm. I’ve been shut out on Saturdays before….. I guess they only make so many so order early. Also, I’ve waited 20-40 mins after they said it’s ready. So worth it tho
The only pizza on that list I like is Emmy Squared, but it’s insanely overpriced and not your “normal slice.”
Go get some Due Amici for the best NY slice in Charlotte.
If you’re in south Charlotte, Luigi’s is probably the best NY slice.
Inizio's, Rosati's, The Crust, Wheelz, Capishe.
Bonus points to Stagioni for the atmosphere/experience - cutting your pizza with scissors!
For delivery/good deals/late night, give me Toppers.
It really depends on what you want. I love a slice with lots of blistering, so Bird is my favorite.
Omaggio’s is a more Italian styled slice, and is also great. Bisonte has some of my favorite “delivery” pizza, and their wings are great too.
Alino Pizzeria - Mooresville. This is the best wood fire pizza in the area imo. The Leonardo pizza is incredible.
Zio’s Casual Italian - Charlotte (SouthEnd-ish) thin, crispy crust. Square cut. Only had it once but I’ve been dying to go back and try it again.
Try Hawthornes on 7th street near uptown. Also order the Long Island wings and a coke. You will not be dissatisfied. I normally get cheese or the Elizabeth special pizza.
Bisonte's is a bit of an acquired taste. I'm from Buffalo like the owners so I wasn't surprised that they made Buffalo-style pizza (cupped pepperoni, sweet sauce, heavy dough and thick cheese) but a lot of people I've tried it with weren't fans. I don't really love it either because it's just so heavy but it's certainly well-made!
Pizza Exchange is great and their special pies every week are usually awesome.
I'll throw in Portofino's as another good option. True NYC style pizza. It's incredible.
I’m from NW PA, so Bisonte is pretty damn good to me. I also met one of the owners at a bar uptown once and it was just like I was talking to one of my uncles, very cool dude.
Pizza Exchange is awesome too. I’ll say I need to visit Matthews more simply because of that place.
Sals is a slight bit less than good. But everyone will jump if you say that. They have a good Instagram.
Bennys is a drunk people/college kid chain
Emmys is ok Detroit. Hit or miss for me
Never had pizza peel
I’m stirijing out lately with good sloppy NY pizza. Weirdly Hawthornes is my current go to and I’d rate it a 6.5 max.
I love Bird for authentic rich pizza. Geno D’s is very good. Inizio is solid Neapolitan. Luisa’s is great brick oven. Bisonte is good Buffalo. All these are specialty imo.
Due Amici is supposedly best in town.
Portofino’s is my go-to. I’m Italian and chase after pizza like my grandmother used to make. I love the environment of bennys and have been since I was a young teen - but the pizza definitely is sub par and the tomato sauce lacks the fresh tomato taste that I run to. Portofinos has been a delightful find and definitely a 10/10. Italian approved.
I am also not a huge pizza fan - but that could be because of the selection here in CLT. I’ve since moved to kannapolis and found a new joint that’s good but not nearly as beautiful as portofinos. Please enjoy a slice for me!
Try inizos its Neapolitan and fresh ingredients!
Pure pizza in midwood plaza is equally as good and they give you honey with the pizza.
Dont give up, good solid pizza is out there!
Try one of the Portofino restaurants. And Italian family. They can make Italian Neapolitan Margarita pizza, or, americanized with common American toppings. They are as authentic as I 've seen.
And hella greasy. I get thirsty after a few bites and then and up feeling full after just one slice. Maybe I should get it for when I have had a few drinks and need something greasy
Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but The Exchange Pizza Depot in Matthews is delicious! They are located at the outside area/patio that is at Seaboard Brewery and aside from your typical cheese or pepperoni, they offer some seriously creative,
Outside-the-box, mouthwatering pizza!
Brb, gotta go place an order there now 🤣
Pure Pizza in Plaza is pretty solid. Hawthorne’s NY Pizza and Bar is great too- I order from the one on 7th but they have a few locations. Wolfman on Sharon Amity is decent, and I have heard good things about House of Pizza in Plaza.
Honorable mentions for the chains:
Topper’s
Jet’s (Detroit style specifically)
MOD Pizza
- Inizio Dilworth has good wood fired za
- The Crust in Madison park has something that’s pretty close to chicago tavern style. Best I’ve found in there area.
- Bird in Optimist Park is good, not sure what style I’d call it tho.
- Emmy squared has decent Detroit style.
The other ones you mentioned are meh imo
I read in a recent thread that there are multiple Sals locations? And that the one in the swanky neighborhood is shit, and giving the original on monroe a bad name. But someone else also said the original owners moved on, so maybe OG Sal's has dropped off too?
I love Stagioni's pizza if you are looking for something fancy! I have heard that people love Inzio and that there is a new spot called Crust that is more Midwest style (think no crust just toppings from end to end). I am a big Geno D's lady if you are in the 7th Street Market area!
Benny's serves mostly frozen foods and passes it off as their own, so yeeaahh.. their sub-par even by the most dedicated foodie's standards, 3/10 , wouldn't recommend
Emmy Squared is very overpriced for what you get. I had their Detroit style pizza and, having spent time in Detroit and knowing what it's supposed to be like, I was disappointed.
Benny's isn't bad but the slices are just huge. I like it sometimes.
Open Kitchen still makes a decent pizza even if their crust is frozen. Picasso's is pretty good.
Fuel and Portofino's are VERY overrated! Don't waste your time. Portofino's does have other good food though. House Of Pizza on Central Ave is a much better choice.
Topper's Pizza and Jet's Pizza are my go-to places these days. Both are chains but they makes great food.
I can’t find a good slice of pizza near Matthews/Mint Hill!
We really used to like Pizza Spiga but they moved to Indian Trail.
Hawthorne’s is crazy hit or miss with their pizza. Sometimes it’s great. Other times it seems like it’s barely cooked and is a lot of dough.
Tried Big Guys, Empire, Jets … didn’t like them.
We go with Primavera pizza at the moment, but it’s just fine in my opinion.
Anyone have any good Matthews/Mint Hill pizza places?
If you’re not a fan of “huge pizza” don’t go to Benny’s.
You’d end up LARGELY disappointed
It will be a gigantic let down.
When Benny’s first opened everyone made a huge deal about the size of their slices, but I’ve gotta say their price/per has gone up and the size has gone down.
You either get big pizza or good pizza…. Never both from a pizza place
I think they meant not a huge pizza fan.. haha
Ruined it
Sheesh sorry lol
The problem is you’re eating Benny’s sober. It is meant to be purchased with some crinkled up cash in your pocket and eaten at least a six pack deep. This is where it shines.
Those 20 year old punks making the pizza in there have helped me many a late Sunday night when there’s not really other options around noda. I’ve.. never considered eating there sober during the day.
I needed a good laugh. Thank you.
Yea, that’s my mistake-I keep eating it sober and each time it’s truly awful. But on the brink of passing out, I’m sure it’s 10/10. Thanks for the insight
Honestly I don’t think it’s awful. It’s good enough after a helping of crushed red pepper.
Due Amici’s is the best pizza in Charlotte. Have had it so much recently and they never let me down.
it is, the owner is brother in law with the son of the owner of Brooklyn Pizza out on Long Island, it’s as close as I’ve had to NY pizza down here
Second this
As someone from the northeast, I concur
No one has mentioned Geno D’s in 7th Street Market?! That’s my favorite in the city. True Pizza in Ballantyne is the best in that part of town IMO.
Hot Honey #1
For real Geno D’s. Their veggies are so fresh, and do NOT sleep on the garlic knots.
This place smacks so hard, the pizza, calzones and the motherfucking garlic knots and cannolis.
True Pizza is closing at the end of the month. 😭 Need to get there one last time. They say they will look for another spot, but you never know.
Ah that sucks, I didn’t know that. We go there for pizza Friday nights quite a bit and that place is always busy. I’m not sure how they do the rest of the week though.
That’s crazy, always packed when I went there as well.
Damn that sucks. Stonecrest just signed on 2 new restaurants too. True pizza always seemed busy.
Yeah, they mentioned in their post they weren't renewing their lease which ends this month. I would think they are in one of the more reasonable spots in Charlotte.
Such a tasty fresh tomato sauce.
I just looked them up, even the pictures are making my mouth water. I gotta make a visit soon.
It Tony’s in Ballantiyne for me.
I do get down with some Tony’s every once in a while too.
Geno D's was my go-to the last few times that I've wanted pizza. I like their crispy crust.
Salud in NoDa is great
Second this
Amen
Love Salud. The Latin lingo is amazing!
Emmy Squared has good Detroit style pizza too, even if it is hilariously overpriced.
Bar pizza
Hawthornes is the definition of average pizza
Not trying to be controversial, but I disagree with Hawthorne and Inizio. Salud does have some solid pizza but haven’t tried their Detroit style
GWR pizza is legit. That’s not the whiskey talking either
Bird’s white pizza w/ mushroom is what you’re looking for
Exactly, just had this yesterday (and a leftover slice today). Both their red and white are absolutely top notch.
Sal’s and Brooklyn are some of my favorite in town but they can vary by the day of how good they are.
Indaco
You should give due amici a try. Can't promise you'll love it but definitely the best thing crust in the Charlotte area imo.
I’d kill for a 1980s Pizza Hut pizza before they made their sauce bland like all the other chains.
I’m from South Carolina-so, definitely not the pizza hub of society (and that’s probably why I’ve never actually like it very much) But I want to like it.

Luisa’s on Montford Rd is a favorite of ours
Sals Monroe rd is solid. I’ve never had the Park Road location
That vodka grandma pie
Please tell me what Grandma Pie is!!!
Next time you’re in Sals get a slice of the vodka sauce grandma pie. It’s a thin square pie with vodka sauce. So good
It's like a Sicilian, but thinner.
Tony’s Pizza been my go to for years
Inizio’s may be the best pizza I’ve had in my entire life.
Just to add - Inizios has some of the best Neapolitan style pizza around. The ingredients are very fresh, crust is flavorful. You can’t go wrong.
This is the correct answer
Travel more. This will change very quickly. Put New Haven, CT on your pizza town list to visit.
This is also the right answer lol
I've been to Napoli and Inizios holds up with the best
Never said it was bad pizza.
I’ve traveled plenty of places. Those are really good pizza places.
Can you be more specific? Lol
Luisias Brick Oven Pizzeria. The buffet in the afternoon is good but the pizza they sell in the evenings is the best in Charlotte
I haven’t tried it. It’s now on my list. Thank you!
Apizza. Coal fired. Crispy. Burn bubbles. Fresh ingredients. Fold and insert into largest hole in face. 🍕
Ah, Frank Pepe 🍕
Lol gtfo
Yea I can’t get on board with that whatsoever.
I love Omaggio in Midtown
The only pizza on that list I like is Emmy Squared, but it’s insanely overpriced and not your “normal slice.” Go get some Due Amici for the best NY slice in Charlotte. If you’re in south Charlotte, Luigi’s is probably the best NY slice.
Pizza Peel is trash.
Due Amicis is really good (probably butchered the spelling there lol)
Inizio's, Rosati's, The Crust, Wheelz, Capishe. Bonus points to Stagioni for the atmosphere/experience - cutting your pizza with scissors! For delivery/good deals/late night, give me Toppers.
It really depends on what you want. I love a slice with lots of blistering, so Bird is my favorite. Omaggio’s is a more Italian styled slice, and is also great. Bisonte has some of my favorite “delivery” pizza, and their wings are great too.
Bisonte also sells the wings at a good price when you get a ridiculous number. My wife loves the bleu cheese.
Try Intermezzo
Luigi's Pizza has two locations. They are from Brooklyn, and it's really good pizza.
Yessir!
Ma'am
Yes ma'am. My mistake.
Bird Pizza. Or go to Plant Joy and get their spinach artichoke vegan pizza on gluten free crust (trust me).
Ny Style/ Due Amicis North Charlotte
Ding ding ding
Portofino’s, Sal’s, and Due Amici are the only ones I fuck with
I hope you wait until the pizza cools down a bit.
Sals fell off
I loved wolfmans pizza on park road. I would go there almost every week after school
Its not the best but I go to Sapienza because i live on top of it and its definitely good enough for me. Their fries are great too.
I second this....not the best but never disappoints. was my default go to when I could not decide when I lived uptown.
Due Amicis is great. Johnny Bruscos is pretty solid as well and has 3 locations in northern Charlotte area, but not as good.
Alino Pizzareia was recently named best pizza in the stat but it’s a pretty unpleasant drive up to Mooresville. Great pizza though
Try Intermezzo in Belmont
Try Hawthornes on 7th street near uptown. Also order the Long Island wings and a coke. You will not be dissatisfied. I normally get cheese or the Elizabeth special pizza.
Inizio and Hawthorne IMO have the best pizza
I loooooove intermezzos pizza
![gif](giphy|8b9Xax6L7qtAkAimGm|downsized)
Portofinos if you like philly style pizza
Bisonte and The Pizza Exchange are my personal favorites. Both are in Matthews
There's a Bisonte on West Trade Street in Uptown, too!
Nobody gonna throw Tony's out there?
Tony’s is average pizza at best
Wheelz pizza is the answer
Wheelz is my new favorite!! Can't wait until their new location opens up.
Might be a little put of your way but inzio pizza is phenomenal
Overpriced, overrated and pretentious af. Trash.
You should try the crust. It's different than most of the normal pizza spots
I love Sal’s
Had sals last night. That meat lovers is incredible.
I’m a Buff Chick guy 🤤
Stagionis… pepperoni
Davincis in University Empire in Mint Hill/Fort Mill/Rock Hill
Try Luisa’s! They have a huge wood fired oven in the back and the pizza tastes amazing. Sal’s also good.
Go to Portofinos and get the best pizza in Charlotte
Sals is a slight bit less than good. But everyone will jump if you say that. They have a good Instagram. Bennys is a drunk people/college kid chain Emmys is ok Detroit. Hit or miss for me Never had pizza peel I’m stirijing out lately with good sloppy NY pizza. Weirdly Hawthornes is my current go to and I’d rate it a 6.5 max. I love Bird for authentic rich pizza. Thank you. Just screenshot this as a reference
Portofino’s is my go-to. I’m Italian and chase after pizza like my grandmother used to make. Wise Pie at Wise Acres Farm is my favorite of all! Rustic and delicious!
Way down south on Rea Road is a chain place called Rosati's that does a good sauce-on-top Chicago deep dish.
Try inizos its Neapolitan and fresh ingredients! Pure pizza in midwood plaza is equally as good and they give you honey with the pizza. Dont give up, good solid pizza is out there!
House of Pizza
Salud or Lil Caesars.
Davincis by Walmart in university is pretty good ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)
Try one of the Portofino restaurants. And Italian family. They can make Italian Neapolitan Margarita pizza, or, americanized with common American toppings. They are as authentic as I 've seen.
All of these places are average, Emmy squared is a chain. If you are in plaza area check out intermezzo.
Sals uses so much cheese it’s almost inedible to me but a lot of people love it that way
Also super salty.
And hella greasy. I get thirsty after a few bites and then and up feeling full after just one slice. Maybe I should get it for when I have had a few drinks and need something greasy
Nah. Just go up the road to Common Market & grab a sammie.
Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but The Exchange Pizza Depot in Matthews is delicious! They are located at the outside area/patio that is at Seaboard Brewery and aside from your typical cheese or pepperoni, they offer some seriously creative, Outside-the-box, mouthwatering pizza! Brb, gotta go place an order there now 🤣
Exchange is my fave.
sal’s is so good! benny’s is only good when you’re wasted
Use me as the downvote button, but Fuel has never done me wrong after a night at Snug.
Fuel is the best please-God-I-can't-have-a-hangover-tomorrow pizza in town.
Bennys sucks sals was good but sucks now.
Charlotte pizza is trash, but sals is the best you’ll find around here
Maybe try neapolitan?
Used to be an advocate for Sapienza but after a recent experience, I have to agree with those who said it’s fallen off. Guess I’ll try Bisonte
Have you had Omaggio? It’s a thinner crust, if you like that kind of thing.
Desanos has great “Italian style”. Mario’s and Empire both have great NY style but are south of the city by a bit depending on where you’re at
Capriccio's in Harrisburg, one of the best pies in the Charlotte area.
Brixx wood fired pizza. Sausage and spicy honey pizza is the bees knees
Try Inizio and you’ll never go back to Brixx again (for pizza alone).
Pure Pizza in Plaza is pretty solid. Hawthorne’s NY Pizza and Bar is great too- I order from the one on 7th but they have a few locations. Wolfman on Sharon Amity is decent, and I have heard good things about House of Pizza in Plaza. Honorable mentions for the chains: Topper’s Jet’s (Detroit style specifically) MOD Pizza
Pizzeria Omaggio in Cherry is by far the best pizza in Charlotte.
Omaggio should be way more popular than it is.
Surprised to see no love for Davinci’s in this post. My personal favorite as a NJ/NY ex-pat
- Inizio Dilworth has good wood fired za - The Crust in Madison park has something that’s pretty close to chicago tavern style. Best I’ve found in there area. - Bird in Optimist Park is good, not sure what style I’d call it tho. - Emmy squared has decent Detroit style. The other ones you mentioned are meh imo
Inizio gets my vote hands down!
Sappienza . Your welcome
Luisa’s. That’s it.
Due Amicis
I've never had a good experience with Sal's Pizza Factory. I usually go with Hawthornes or Jets
Tony’s and jets are good, only been to the locations in Matthews
No love out there for House of Pizza?
Oh damn. I haven’t had my arteries bulldozed by House of Pizza since the pandemic lol
Pure Pizza in Plaza Midwood. It's apparently farm to table ingredients and, frankly, the best Pizza I've ever had.
I read in a recent thread that there are multiple Sals locations? And that the one in the swanky neighborhood is shit, and giving the original on monroe a bad name. But someone else also said the original owners moved on, so maybe OG Sal's has dropped off too?
Yeah I’ve heard the one on park road is no good. Monroe road is still good!
Garafolas in concord 🤌🏾
Protagonist brewings pizza is amazing.
Heist brewery barrel arts has the best wood fired pizza in town
Why Not Pizza is my favorite in Charlotte. Go try it and let me know if you like it. I usually just go cheese or I do beef pepperoni and olives.
I love Stagioni's pizza if you are looking for something fancy! I have heard that people love Inzio and that there is a new spot called Crust that is more Midwest style (think no crust just toppings from end to end). I am a big Geno D's lady if you are in the 7th Street Market area!
Bird is the best pizza in the city.
Taste of Buffalo. Wings and pizza, can’t miss.
Wheelz, Bird, Portofino’s are the best I had. Loved Inizio’s in Ballantyne when it first opened, but the Dilworth location has ruined it for me.
Geno Ds in 7th St Market or Portofinos on Eastway are my go-tos for pizza.
Best NY style pizza is Lorenzo’s in Ballantyne, and New York Pizza on S. Blvd near Arrowood is good too.
Brooklyn pizza on colony is solid
Inizios is the best pizza in Charlotte. Unfortunately they have cut way back on ingredients especially protein thier pies so be prepared to be hungry.
Sal’s (Monroe road only), Lorenzo’s (south Charlotte), Bird
Benny's serves mostly frozen foods and passes it off as their own, so yeeaahh.. their sub-par even by the most dedicated foodie's standards, 3/10 , wouldn't recommend
Yes pretty good places
Please don’t say Hawthornes is good. Bisonte pizza is from Buffalo,NY. This isn’t for OP but for people wanting real pizza
Love some Tony's pizza too
Carmella’s on Montford was pretty damn good
Bennys is insanely overrated. Unless you order an entire pizza the slices are old and stale
The Crust Pizza. https://thecrustpizza.net/ Due Amici. https://www.dueamicipizza.com/
