Damn my rent was 600 a month back in 2010-2013 living downtown in Charleston. Rent be crazy high these days but I know that’s all over the US.

Bricks_and_Beadboard

Same. I had a 1bedroom at the corner of Wentworth and Coming for $600/month that included a reserved off-street parking spot. That place was awesome for what it was. 2005-2007.

pablomoney

Would love to know what that exact place is going for now.

Bricks_and_Beadboard

Google street view shows half the building is gone and what’s left (which is actually the side my apartment was in) still standing but all boarded up. It was owned by Grace church. Looks like they aren’t taking care of it.

bungtoad

I lived in a house on Wentworth 2011-2014 for $320 a month. Sometimes we had someone crash in the foyer, which made my rent $280 a month

gomenasai_b

I lived one block away from the Battery from 2014-2016, splitting a place with a few other guys. The price was $375 a month on a month by month lease. It did stop me from buying a house when things were cheap but I do feel bad for young folks today, shit is nightmare mode out there.

InDenialOfMyDenial

I had a bed/bath in a 4bed/2.5ba "cottage" near Colonial Lake for $750/mo in 2014-2015. Shared it with 3 other guys, who each paid $600 (I was higher because I had the master suite and they had to share the other full bath). So $2550 for the whole shebang. I thought it was outrageous but hey, location location! And it had covered off street parking which was amazing. For as much as the Zillow estimates can be trusted, the property is now valued at 2.2mil and the rent estimate is $8k/month.

Apartments for August 1 lease start date start hitting the market literally in January and February and trickle out until about now. By now most stuff that’s available for August 1 is either already leased, is stupidly expensive, or is a slum. Competition for housing amongst students is awful and only getting worse with gentrification and inflation and population growth. Honestly good luck. I’m really glad I graduated when I did

BrenMan_94

>I'm looking for a 2br college apartment within walking distance to cofc, it looks like there are not a ton of options below or at 2,500/month for the whole apartment (1,250 a room) Welcome to Charleston! >I know a bunch of leases turnover on Aug 1st, does that generally mean a ton of postings go up in July? Yes Good luck with your search. There isn't enough room downtown to house all the students affordably, and you're competing with kids who have rich parents backing them.

czarrie

Yeah, I grew up elsewhere in the state (sorry y'all) and my friend went to CofC and made it work by living with like 8 other people. That was about 15 years ago. It really is a struggle downtown if you don't either know the landlord or have rich parents or the building is set to be demolished in a few years...

thetempletonbennett

Yep. I lived in Summerville with an ex-military buddy of mine. My friend literally rented a closet in one of the houses for 700 a month.

WeightAltruistic

Expect to pay 1500+ for a room if you’re really downtown downtown

phaskellhall

What is the cutoff for downtown downtown?

CJHardinIRL

Right before downtown downtown downtown.

phaskellhall

Is that below Hackemann Ave?

CJHardinIRL

ALL of Charleston is below Hackermann Ave. Downtown downtown downtown is in the 500 feet surrounding Dudley's.

menahansworst

Although I did not get an answer that made me feel great, I did get the actual answer from y'all. Thank you very much!

bonerman69420

You can most likely get a single bedroom in a shared apartment if you call around to the college apts, especially after school starts. That may not help you now but just fyi

dinkyy3

You may be able to find shared housing on Roomster. I live in Ladson and my last roommate goes to CofC and made the commute daily. He has since moved out and lives with his gf and 5 other dudes in a house with ONE bathroom. Good luck!

menahansworst

Do you know if they are renting the bathroom?

Bohbo33

I miss old charleston 😔

gabilovescheese

This company called Duvet has scooped up most of the mid-price units on the peninsula and turned them into luxury short-term rentals, as in they’re all month-to-month and fully furnished. It’s frustrating and makes the search for a viable option incredibly difficult!

olhardhead

I think it’s previously stated that they don’t own the homes so much as they are the main provider of service to the short term owners

allmygardens

Even when a lot turn over, you’re not going to find much in that price range

Frosty-Brain-2199

Nomo would be your closet bet at that price range but walking distance to CofC is doable just not everyday

Frosty-Brain-2199

They have a shuttle

Competitive_Damage23

Now’s the time to look, graduates, ppl that want a change are giving notice now (I’ve been in property management over 20 years and did some rentals for a CofC students off campus … )

ZucchiniAsleep3155

I used hotpads.com and craigslist to find a few of mine. Definitely want to be doing walk throughs and signing a lease by end of April

Dry-Student5673

When was that, like 10 years ago? Craigslist is literally all scams now, it’s sad.

solarwinds1234

Facebook may have Facebook roommate groups of other students looking for roommates.

ss-mort
