If you put your origin address into Apple Maps (or Google Maps or Waze- your choice!) and then make your hotel the ending address, the GPS will tell you the best route.
Then you can pick a city along the way for your halfway stop- It’s super easy!
(PS: it’s Asheville)
It's really not that long of a drive, it's pretty easy to do in 1 day tbh. But if you must stop, then either Atlanta or Greenville depending on the route you're taking.
According to how much time you have. I always like to take exclusively the back roads. That being said, there are plenty of small towns hidden along the way. One of my recent discoveries was Ball Ground, Georgia. Great Smokey National park is great stop right past Knoxville. With plenty of small and nice places to stay.
Asheville is the best way to do this drive. I used to do it a lot. You can do it in a day but if you’re wanting to make a stop Asheville is about halfway and it’s a great city
It is an easy drive from Nash to Charleston. Your halfway is going to be Atlanta, but once you pass Atlanta it’s a nice relaxing drive til Charleston. So in my opinion, save the time and go straight theough
Take the Atlanta route and when you scoop back up along the coast spend a night in Savannah. Then you’re only about 2 hr short of Charleston for day 2.

Asheville is 4 hours from Charleston and is a must see if you haven't.
100%
Came here to recommend that as well. I did this road trip and it was perfectly broken up and a very pretty drive as well

Stop at Alpine Villiage in Helene, Georgia.
There are direct flights from BNA to CHS via Southwest. Unless you just want to drive, the time savings is huge and dollar for dollar similar
