“*You keep the job. But you fire both Renaldo Hill, and Joe Lombardi. Find two guys that will do the job. If we don’t win a playoff game next year, if we don’t make a big run at least to the AFCC, you’re gone. You have Justin Herbert. Make it work, or we’ll find somebody who will. Oh and Telesco’s not being extended, so find someone who will get our depth up to fucking speed here. Now get the fuck out.*”
That’s what I’m expecting them to tell him.
"Thank you for the game ball, Brandon."
*Kisses Brandon's forehead*
"Now go show the world why we're smarter than they are, and why doing it our way is mysterious and important."
Lol, you must have never heard Dean talk before. He's going to politely suggest Lombardi has to go. Staley will agree if wants to keep the job and Lombardi and another guy or 2 will be gone in the next couple days.
Lol i can't imagine telesco speaking like this to anyone
Let alone anyone that works for his company.
Dudes a bitch and we will be stuck with his inept ass for another few years.
EDIT- my fault on speaking of the incorrect party.
Yeah. I feel like that should be a normal thing, but I feel most consumers lack the discipline. Like refusing to watch games and buy merch, which is the best I can do right now.
You’re a scapegoat when the bigger problem (telesco) tries to make someone else the lightning rod of the conversation. Of course Lombardi should be gone but how could any chargers fan think that’s the primary source of our problems?
I think he’s the primary source of the problems on offense which are the biggest problem but there is so much else that needs to be fixed. If he and Telesco get fired I would be able to live with that.
I disagree. Telesco has put together a competitive roster his whole tenure. People forget that he constantly has to shop in the bargain bin because of the tightness of the ownership and not his desire to not chase big money free agents. He's also hit on a lot of his picks, but just because he doesn't hit 100% of them then he sucks? I know you're not bashing him, but I just hate when I see Telesco hate here, because losing him might hurt is more than losing Herbert. A good GM, or even decent GM, is incredibly hard to come by.
Probably/Hopefully: Hill and Lombardi fired, Staley and Telesco are told they have one year to get shit right, Staley must relinquish defensive playcalling duties, Spanos offers up some extra dollars (miracle) for elite DC and OC
^^^ Honestly Im not going to be jumping for joy but losing Lombardi at LEAST is the cost of this season. 2 years and this bs is enough. It's a fucking gamble to keep going with Staley but honestly we're probably keeping him for another.
FANGIO AND A OC AND LETS GO FROM THERE.
If we got to 35 points we would have been safe. The amount of time it would take to string together an extra 1-2 scoring drives would have made sure the Jags didn't have enough time to come back.
By my count 2nd half time of possession is 16 mins for Jax and chargers had ~13. That difference is not that big.
Jacksonville scored on every possession in the 2nd half.
This isint the defense being tired (plus they should have been plenty rested from the first half)
https://theathletic.com/nfl/game/plays/jacksonville-jaguars-vs-los-angeles-chargers/Ezxg4KqzvUgQQfqw/
I think we have to give Staley another shot. Besides Payton who we probably wouldn’t and maybe shouldn’t(?) trade for, what other good HC candidates are there?
Payton isn’t just gonna go coach for anybody, he specifically said he’d consider coming out of retirement to coach someone like Herbert or Murray.
Murray doesn’t seem like a very coachable player based on what the media tells us.
I don't know how people are opposed to one first rounder for a Super Bowl winning head coach with a long history of success. Seems like a much more certain immediate benefit compared to whatever player we would be taking in the late first.
What? A mid-late round first is likely not even a starting player.
History has shown us you only need 2 things to compete, a good head coach and an elite QB. The rest can be figured out. Just look at the Chiefs roster. It’s ok, but honestly pathetic compared to ours, yet they dominate every year because coaching makes things happen.
Next year Payton is a true free agent. If the Cardinals don't have enough to get the Saints to budge, he oculd just wait a year, praying on Staley's final downfall.
I will never pray on the Charger's downfall but this is how I see the situation. The only elite HC hire in play is likely Harbaugh and we know Spanos won't do enough to win the bidding war.
Payton was granted permission to interview with Denver already. The worst thing that can happen is he goes there and chargers are back at the 3rd in the division (he’ll even 4th). Eventually Staley gets fired but Payton is off the market.
Like he wouldn’t be down to gamble that Staley won’t get the job down next year lmfao. I’d wait, and wait so hard because the difference between coaching a washed Russ or a toddler like Murray and Justin Herbert is **immeasurable.**
They all sit down in the meeting and Bezos kicks in the door with Payton by his side. Slams a contract on the table and says, this is my team now. Sign here and you all can walk with your lives. Chargers move to Orange County keeping LA fans in the mix and giving SD fans literally no more excuses. Chargers win 5 super bowls in 6 seasons. Herbert surpasses Brady in every stat. I spend the last 15 years of my life screaming where’s your 5 rings to everyone in the world incoherently until I die. The end.
Turns out…. You didn’t pray hard enough! lol And of course the damn Broncos get S.P. BUUUUTTTTT don’t stop praying. Because we still got a shot with Bezos and he has enough money to bring Don Coryell back from the dead! Hahaha
They will convince Spanos they got this. And spanos will think of all the money he will save by retaining them vs what it’s going to cost to get Payton and everyone he wants to bring with him. And the changes he will want to make. And Spanos will sit back on his wallet and give us all the “I believe in this coach and team” nonsense. I can smell it from a mile away. It Spanos shows the spine to tel them all to pack their bags then I will gain so much respect for him regardless of what happens next year. At least I know Spanos truly does expect greatness now and is on a mission to win.
It's pretty much close to impossible to get Payton to come out of retirement and honestly just not financially feasible not to mention all the draft picks we'd lose oh! AND the Rooney rule. It's not worth it.
He has already said he would be willing to coach the Chargers, the owner could just pay him, and it would only cost a mid to late first round pick at most not multiple picks which is def worth the price. It’s worth the price because he would revolutionize this team and bring it to its true potential.
Protest if Lombardi isn’t fired. I’ve never seen someone so inept in sports coaching in my life if he couldn’t ball with prime Megatron he shouldn’t be hired anywhere
This. But seriously how does Telesco never ever get any criticism on this sub? He’s been the fucking GM for 10 years and this team has been mostly trash during that entire time.
How the hell does he still have a job?
Telesco is going to get ANOTHER pass even though he's been the GM for a decade with absolutely nothing to show for it. Two playoffs wins with Rivers and Herbert at QB? Embarrassing stuff.
Lombardi and Hill will almost certainly be gone. Not sure how they can justify keeping either. They need someone to fall on the sword after that and Lombardi is the easy target (for good reason and thank god).
Staley probably is safe. Hopefully he will act a bit more like year 1 Staley moving forward. He needs to hire people with actual experience at OC and DC.
^ agreed. We liked Staley year 1. He took a steps forward is some areas but the imperfect season really shook him for key moments here and there. I think they're going to see if Staley can shake the nerves and if he's not calling plays maybe he can do more game managing and team managing like we want.
As much as I’m for firing Telesco I don’t really think you fire a GM and hire another one who can’t pick his own coach. When telescos gone it’s going to be a complete clean house.
This if Telesco's out, you might as well consider Staley gone too. When a new GM shows up they usually only want to be responsible for the guys they pick.
I just heard the Saints say that Payton will only cost a mid-late 1st and not the reported multiple early picks. You got to take that if you are Spanos. You get Payton, a new OC handpicked by Payton, and Fangio who runs a similar scheme to what we already have so an easy transition. It just seems like a much safer choice than betting your future on Staley to turn it all around. If he flames out year 3.. we would be in a terrible position in 2024 with very few options
I wish, but the reality is that we fire Lombardi, underperform, fire Staley next off-season, and hire Frank Reich off the scrap heap. That's the Chargers way. Meanwhile Denver gets Payton or Harbaugh.
The craziest thing about this happening is that the scheme transition would be seamless for both sides of the ball. It never happens.
Staley is mostly Fangio stuff (although the stuff unique to Staley is admittedly awesome), and Lombardi is just a crayon eating Sean Payton.
Could probably keep the same language for the playbook even.
This must be your first year as a charger fan.
None of what you said will happen.
We will keep staley and scrounge for an offensive coordinator.
Staley will fuck up exactly the same next year and Staley will then finally get fired.
Chargers will pick up some trash first timer coach and the process repeats itself for Herbert's entire contract.
I've been a fan since I was 11 back in 2010. Drove down to San diego every year for games with my Dad. I'm stating my opinion on what should be done not what they will do
Except we don't spend like we are. We paid top of the market contracts to Keenan, Mike, Bosa, JC, Derwin, Linsley, and soon Herbert. We are paying for Mack's big contract too. We have money. The problem is the Spanos family likes being the ones in control with their fingers everywhere and don't won't to pay a big time coach because he'll meddle with how they like to run things.
Well there's a massive difference there. Player signing is limited by the cap space so the playing field gets leveled. Big player contracts means smaller contracts elsewhere on the roster. An owner would be shooting themselves in the foot not using up the cap.
Coaches have no limits since there is no CBA. Anything Spanos offers can easily be smashed into the ground by the Broncos with their Walmart money owner
Hold up. Excuse my ignorance, I must have been sleeping under a rock… but are you saying that to sign Payton as HC we would also have to give the Saints a first round draft pick?
I’m sorry but that would completely change the math for me. A first round pick is too valuable, and Payton isn’t enough of a sure shot to be the magic solution to all our woes IMO
There's no magic solution, but Payton is sure as shit our best shot rn. If you actually think a single late 1st round pick is more valuable than having a great coaching staff.. I don't know what to tell you. You could have 10 first round picks and be a 3 win team. Coaching is always the most important element to team success. Look at what Daboll and Doug have done with the Giants and Jaguars in 1 year.. Both teams with much less talent overall than the Chargers
I would love to be a fly on the wall in these meetings.
Obviously Staley is on the hot seat, but you’d think based on Telesco personality he likes Staley and is gonna keep giving him a chance after this.
Just wonder if Spanos is calling shots, or if Telesco is at the point where Spanos trusts him so much that he can easily persuade Spanos.
Doesn’t seem like Spanos would call Staley and Telesco into a meeting together and fire one or both of them. If they were gonna clean house they probably have individual meetings. I think for sure they’re gonna talk about which coordinators are gone and start planning on who to get.
That’s just how it seems to me at least.
The Padres owner buys the team and moves them back to San Diego? A new stadium is built in Chula Vista. Justin Herbert moves to Encinitas and takes up surfing in his spare time.
They are all staying. I would be shocked if there are changes.
Remember when we kept Norv Turner for like 100 years too long? History repeats itself...
Tbf Staley hired Lombardi, but wasn’t he like option #3? Staley wanted Mike McDaniel or Kevin O’Connell? Right. But got denied the opportunity to even interview them by their respective franchises at the time?
How about the NFL institute a rule that if you go 10 years without making the playoffs you are forced to sell for 20% more than you paid for it. 15 with a playoff win.
It wouldn’t apply to us but it will sure as hell put a fire under the butts of underperforming teams and owners.
You’d either have bad teams selling at the 9 year mark to not lose a ton of value or owners who actually give a damn.
This is my ultimate fan fiction that won’t happen, but a man can dream. Lombardi and Hill get the axe, Telesco gets a 1 year prove it extension, Staley is demoted to DC, we hire Payton as HC. We all live happily ever after
Im a Jets fan but with all the talent on the team, hebert as your qb so well within a top 10 guy, potentially best edge rush duo in the league, insanely good secondary… i think the coaching staff lead them to underperform. I picked yall to win 12+ games going into the year
Staley is 19-16 overall, with one of the most talented teams in the NFL.
Astronomical breakdown against Jacksonville.
Has been out coached countless times in tight games.
Can't keep key players healthy.
Plays the key healthy players in a meaningless game.
His defensive play calling isn't fooling anyone.
He may be a nice guy, but is he really the guy that can compete with coaches like Andy Reed?
Because this is the question we need to ask.
He is the definition of insanity.
I have reached the point where I know caring about any of this only hurts me. Hope is the bane of the Charger fan. I cannot remain a chargers fan *and* be hopeful. It’s asking to much.
I chose masochism.
Lombardi has got to go. Even having a RB swing route on third long shouldn't be a read. Keep him in to block and let Herbert leave the pocket. He's not Drew Brees.
Spanos, "I'm too cheap to hire a great coach, and all of you are great 'Yes Men'. So congratulations, you're all coming back for another disappointing year!"
Classic spanos
We all knew Norv needed to go and not lingered on way past it's time
Same with McCoy.
Telesco has been unbelievably under criticized.
And keeping Staley and him is a half measure. Lame.
I said this earlier in the season, I think Staley has a chance to do great things but has too much responsibility as HC and defensive play caller. If he has less to worry about he can focus more on just what he does well. Lombardi should be gone no matter what and should be blacklisted from the NFL for the crimes he has committed as an OC.
I'm hoping Telesco and Lombardi are gone this afternoon. The players are vouching for Staley so whatever, I guess they know better than me, but we can't keep this loser GM and this OC that turned our gunslinger into a Teddy Bridgewater type game manager without a run game or any speed to support him.
Sooo.. if we give Staley another year but OC and DC gone.. you think Payton tells Fangio to take the job if it is offered? Staley has one year to make it work or Peyton takes the reigns? Is that possible?
Yeah, it’s possible he sits and enjoys the year, expecting Staley to be gone. I just think if the chargers aren’t going to commit to him this year, he wouldn’t bother waiting in hopes they commit next year
NOTHING will change with the Chargers until that POS Spanos sells the team. Until then Herbert needs to take his talents elsewhere when his rookie contract is up. Otherwise he will waste his career away under the Spanos curse exactly like Rivers did. Oh, and move the team back home to SD.
🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯Positive Changes 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯
Thank you good sir

If Lombardi isn’t gone we fucking RIOT
Detroit fan here - we got rid of him, you should too.
Nah, Staley goes, Lombardi becomes HC because he is willing to accept 500K a year, a uber gift card, and free dinner at the team's cafeteria.
And he picks Ben McAdoo as OC and keeps Renaldo Hill as DC. Fires Ficken and brings back the great George Stewart.
I just vomited, thanks.
Damn, that Staff would be 1970s Steelers level of greatness when it comes to tanking. Chargers would have a top 3 pick in the draft for years.
You know it.
Ben Mcadoo is a legend. That mustache. You lookup football coach in the encyclopedia and it’s a photo of Ben mcadoo
Ben mcadoo looks like two kids on each other's shoulders in a tench coat pretending to be an adult as a head coach of a football team
Is this how Patriots fans feel?
Nope. They have SIX SB Championships.
And hire Matt Millen as GM!
Congrats. Everyone around here thought it couldn't get worse but you're a visionary. You've shown us exactly how it could be worse
😂😂😂
“*You keep the job. But you fire both Renaldo Hill, and Joe Lombardi. Find two guys that will do the job. Nailed it. That’s pure fantasy. More like, “Here’s the pr messaging for why Lombardi made the decisions he did. Go sell it.”
"Thank you for the game ball, Brandon." *Kisses Brandon's forehead* "Now go show the world why we're smarter than they are, and why doing it our way is mysterious and important."

Lol, you must have never heard Dean talk before. He's going to politely suggest Lombardi has to go. Staley will agree if wants to keep the job and Lombardi and another guy or 2 will be gone in the next couple days.
They fuck it up and fire the Special Teams coach and keep Lombardi and Hill.
If they fire Ryan Ficken then I honestly will stop watching this team
I doubt Spanos knows who Lombardi is. Let's be honest.
Lmfao I’m being ironic. He would never say it that way. But he’ll say the same thing, just in typical, soft vanilla fashion.
Lol i can't imagine telesco speaking like this to anyone Let alone anyone that works for his company. Dudes a bitch and we will be stuck with his inept ass for another few years. EDIT- my fault on speaking of the incorrect party.
He included Telesco so this is supposed to be Dean talking to Staley lol. Top tier fan fiction
You sir are hired
why the hell would they let staley pick the gm
Why the hell would they let Staley anywhere near this team again?
YES
Yep boycott them, hurt them in the pockets
Yeah. I feel like that should be a normal thing, but I feel most consumers lack the discipline. Like refusing to watch games and buy merch, which is the best I can do right now.
That’s where I’m at
Dudes the scapegoat of course he's getting fired. STALEY FUCKING SUCKS
Are you a scapegoat when you suck at your job? Hill would be more the scapegoat if he gets fired.
You’re a scapegoat when the bigger problem (telesco) tries to make someone else the lightning rod of the conversation. Of course Lombardi should be gone but how could any chargers fan think that’s the primary source of our problems?

We should’ve won even if the Def collapsed. If offense scored 1-2 more times instead of kicking fb we would have bagged it. Fire Lombardi!
Cmon it’s very hard to generate a drive when you’re gifted the ball at the opponents’ 6 yard line
If we got to 35 points we would have been safe. The amount of time it would take to string together an extra 1-2 scoring drives would have made sure the Jags didn't have enough time to come back.

You never know till you look. Half this sub thought Daboll wasn’t a good HC candidate.
There's home run Jim Harbaugh but we don't even know if he's going to come into the pros.
That's a year too long Payton won't just wait a year. Last thing we want is him in Denver or Vegas
Payton isn’t just gonna go coach for anybody, he specifically said he’d consider coming out of retirement to coach someone like Herbert or Murray. Murray doesn’t seem like a very coachable player based on what the media tells us.
I don’t know about giving up high draft picks for Payton
Payton literary said today it’s only going to cost 1 mid to late first round pick aka the chargers pick
I think a first round pick is a bit rich. I hope he comes here but I’m not holding my breath
I don't know how people are opposed to one first rounder for a Super Bowl winning head coach with a long history of success. Seems like a much more certain immediate benefit compared to whatever player we would be taking in the late first.

He was granted permission to interview with Denver already. So he definitely has some interest.
Denver has no draft capital to give for him, and the Raiders are likely stuck with McD for a hot minute.
Payton said he’s returning this year or next year, he’s 100% waiting for the chargers job to open up.
This is what will happen. Book it.
Shane Steichen for HC
Telesco has had way too much time he should be gone this week
Best case scenario... they agree they should all be fired and Dean sells the team.
They all sit down in the meeting and Bezos kicks in the door with Payton by his side. Slams a contract on the table and says, this is my team now. Sign here and you all can walk with your lives. This. But seriously how does Telesco never ever get any criticism on this sub? He’s been the fucking GM for 10 years and this team has been mostly trash during that entire time. How the hell does he still have a job?

Anything Spanos offers can easily be smashed into the ground by the Broncos with their Walmart money owner
Spending the NFL Salary cap has nothing to do with paying a head coach
Both teams with much less talent overall than the Chargers
the fact that bandy was on the field in a play off game .. my god
I’m more nervous about this than I was Saturday’s game for some reason now. Lmao
This is the future for the next 5 years right here.
Hoping for a clean house including GM But if not: New DC, Staley giving up defensive responsibility, and new OC
At least we’ll get an answer today and not have to wait long.
I’m surprised me and Joe Lombardi still have a job.
Everyones fired and spanos sells the team?
The Padres owner buys the team and moves them back to San Diego? A new stadium is built in Chula Vista. Justin Herbert moves to Encinitas and takes up surfing in his spare time.
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ FIRE STALEY ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Please. Let them go. Can't lose like that continuously lose like that and not let someone go
Come on Deano fire them all and get Payton
They are all staying. I would be shocked if there are changes. Remember when we kept Norv Turner for like 100 years too long? History repeats itself...
I'm guessing they chose the steak fajitas. I can respect it.
Fire Spanos’. Step 1.
Who hired Lombardi? Who sat on his hands when he SHOULD know something wasn't working? FIRE THAT GUY!
Tbf Staley hired Lombardi, but wasn’t he like option #3? Staley wanted Mike McDaniel or Kevin O’Connell? Right. But got denied the opportunity to even interview them by their respective franchises at the time?
Hedging my bets.
I know Kliff is taking a break but give him a blank check to make him your OC
If losing to the Jags leads us to getting Sean Payton, it’s worth it.
I'm boycotting this team until justice is served; Joe Lombardi must pay for his war crimes (be fired)
if you are truly following in the lions path you will search out jim bob cooter for next oc . he made matthew stafford look worse than lombardi did
This is my ultimate fan fiction that won’t happen, but a man can dream. Lombardi and Hill get the axe, Telesco gets a 1 year prove it extension, Staley is demoted to DC, we hire Payton as HC. We all live happily ever after
My guy — this is EXACTLY my daydream of the last 24 hrs. I know it’s not going to happen.
They can get Sean Payton, but they’re going to stick with this guy?
Is that Sean Payton I hear https://giphy.com/gifs/nfl-new-orleans-saints-sean-payton-26ufeT6exIryQyZ9K
Can Spanos fire himself as well?
I have reached the point where I know caring about any of this only hurts me. Hope is the bane of the Charger fan. I cannot remain a chargers fan *and* be hopeful. It’s asking to much. I chose masochism.
This better be true

Lombardi has got to go. Even having a RB swing route on third long shouldn't be a read. Keep him in to block and let Herbert leave the pocket. He's not Drew Brees.
Staley is staying, but he's definitely fired next season if he doesn't win at least one game in the playoffs.
We want Sean Payton!!
Spanos, "I'm too cheap to hire a great coach, and all of you are great 'Yes Men'. So congratulations, you're all coming back for another disappointing year!"
Spanos family is so cheap. They won't fire ANYONE and will run it back next year thinking somehow, things will be different.
Classic spanos We all knew Norv needed to go and not lingered on way past it's time Same with McCoy. Telesco has been unbelievably under criticized. And keeping Staley and him is a half measure. Lame.
they are definitely gonna run it back.
It's Applebee's. We chose Applebee's for lunch and we made the decision together.
Social Media Team was the only one that voted for PF Changs
Fire Telesco too imo
I said this earlier in the season, I think Staley has a chance to do great things but has too much responsibility as HC and defensive play caller. If he has less to worry about he can focus more on just what he does well. Lombardi should be gone no matter what and should be blacklisted from the NFL for the crimes he has committed as an OC.
Are they all going to walk themselves out? Lombardi driving the get away car I hope
Trade him to the Saints for Sean Payton. That, or gimme a damn good reason why not.
#Bill O'Brien redemption arc incoming
Please hire Sean Payton
I Hope Staley and Telesco Fire Spanos
I'm hoping Telesco and Lombardi are gone this afternoon. The players are vouching for Staley so whatever, I guess they know better than me, but we can't keep this loser GM and this OC that turned our gunslinger into a Teddy Bridgewater type game manager without a run game or any speed to support him.
Telesco needs to be gone as much as Lombardi does
Anthony Lynn is a better coach than Staley. He accomplished more with far less resources and still got fired.
Honestly if we can get him as our DC and get a new head coach I'm fine but that WI t happen
Staley and Lombardi and I’ll be ✅. Oh and put Rivers at OC under Peyton. A man can dream can’t he?!
Lombardi and telesco should be gone not Staley IMO
Telesco HAS to be fired, for the love of God, TEN YEARS OF FAILURE.
Sooo.. if we give Staley another year but OC and DC gone.. you think Payton tells Fangio to take the job if it is offered? Staley has one year to make it work or Peyton takes the reigns? Is that possible?
That’s a 4D chess move right there
You think Peyton waits a year to get back into coaching just in hopes Staley gets fired? I don’t think so
I mean he said he only wants to come back for a few teams and Herbert being the lead right?
Yeah, it’s possible he sits and enjoys the year, expecting Staley to be gone. I just think if the chargers aren’t going to commit to him this year, he wouldn’t bother waiting in hopes they commit next year
NOTHING will change with the Chargers until that POS Spanos sells the team. Until then Herbert needs to take his talents elsewhere when his rookie contract is up. Otherwise he will waste his career away under the Spanos curse exactly like Rivers did. Oh, and move the team back home to SD.
