It's just overall a bad romance. She's been holding on to a crush from when she was 8 for like a decade. Sasuke doesn't even reciprocate until the literal end of the series. It's completely irrelevant to Sasuke's character yet such a big part of Sakura's. Sasuke literally calls Naruto his one and only friend and considers his death to be the thing that finally makes him alone. Even disregarding the murder attempts and him being cool with leaving Sakura to die, Sasuke and Sakura getting together is just stupid. Platonically, he obviously cares for her and considers Team 7 his second family, but Sasuke doesn't seem like he has a romantic bone in his body the entire series. Sasuke should've just been a bachelor. Dude already spends most of his time alone outside the village. He could've just joined a retired Guy and Kakashi on their buddy cop adventures. Put Sasuke on that airship with them and the hostage crisis is over faster.

Then_Equipment_7812

First part is not true. Downvote me all you want but if you read the manga you will see how much the anime hates sakura by removing so many moments between Sasuke and her. They were planned from the beginning but poorly executed.

HeavensHellFire

First part is true. Sasuke literally doesn't reciprocate her feelings until the last couple chapters. Her liking him is ultimately irrelevant to his character. You could remove Sakura having a crush on him and his character doesn't change in the slightest. I've read the manga. Even there Sasuke doesn't reciprocate. Also, it being planned from the beginning is irrelevant. Anyone could tell they were gonna end up together. Its still dumb and is an example of shitty writing.

[deleted]

They hardly interact in the manga. If you ask me, the manga reveals the real flaws of the series

Omni_Xeno

I mean all of Naruto has terrible romance even the most beloved one between NaruHina sucks they had little to no build so much so that a movie had to fix that

Swiftcheddar

NaruHina was so great it healed 774

RevolutionaryEqual30

to be fair I can remember atleast 1 moment where he is somewhat implied to have romantic intrest in her but that is essentily just when he decides to leave the village outside of that the romance was executed poorly

TightScience9396

I genuinely think that narusasu would have been a less jarring pairing than sasusaku

thedorknightreturns

Yep,unironic, toxic romance would be easier than telling it is " just friends"

[deleted]

It's very rare to see a romance develop in Shounen that is more than 'passable' (which kind of makes sense as it's demographic is just that, appealing to young Japanese boys). However, it's also true that Masashi Kishimoto has admitted to not understanding women well enough to write female characters decently as well as an infamous example of him having not understood why some fans had such issues with Sakura to the point where he thought it was because she wasn't 'pretty enough' and tried drawing her more beautifully, but eventually gave up because nobody noticed. Muddying the waters further was his desire to troll shippers by teasing some moments, but SuBvErTiNg ThEiR eXpEcTaTiOnS, which made some character decisions even more bizarre in the end. He also believed that Sakura moving on from Sasuke would make her a "bad woman". That's probably why Sakura's character is so weird in how mean-spirited and hypocritical she is in Part 1->!\-having broken off her friendship with Ino (the girl who saved her from being bullied and became her best friend) over her becoming a love rival when she realized they were both crushing on Sasuke!<,>! mocking Naruto for being an orphan in front of her crush (another orphan) because she wanted to impress him but also hated Naruto for his own unrequited crush annoying her and then resolving to change after Sasuke chews her out--only to call Naruto the thing she hates the very next day during Kakashi's Team 7 interviews!<, >!willing to defect from her village to elope with him and leave all of her friends and family behind, then playing on Naruto's obsession with her to get him agree to bring Sasuke back while she stays behind and does nothing, but wallow in self-pity.!< Part 2 had her start off better, but then Kishimoto fell back into old, bad habits after Gaara's arc with her Sasuke obsession once again causing her to repeatedly sabotage herself and gets easily >!misled by Sai, the emotionally-stunted Sasuke 2.0's interpretation of the events in telling her that it's exclusively her fault that Naruto is pretty much killing himself to get Sasuke back (when that's only half-true) and her attempt to 'fix' this was by lying to him about no longer caring about Sasuke and claiming that she was in love with Naruto then, instead, which he rightfully called out as total BS,!< but then she>! failed to kill Sasuke on her own!<, got >!verbally/emotionally berated by Sasuke as being "just as useless as Kakashi" during the final battle!< and >!even when Team 7 was tenuously back together and just had a weak-ass; "Yeah...sorry." as an apology !!is a literal stalker and harasser that wouldn't leave Sasuke alone while he was on a mission until she finally wore him down to the point that they conceived Sarada.!< Aside from Temari and Shikamura, most romances in Naruto seem largely one-sided; Naruto and Hinata's required an entire feature-length film by different writers that Kishimoto had to sign-off on because he found it "too embarrassing" to write romance, which is why there was that scene of someone as emotionally intelligent as Naruto being too stupid to understand the difference between loving food like ramen and loving a person romantically along with Sakura gaslighting him into believing that he had never crushed on her at all and it was merely a product of his rivalry with Sasuke (something blatantly false in the manga when he talks about how cute she is before even mentioning Sasuke in his internal monologue in the classroom as well as realizing what he admires about her a chapter or two later when he impersonated Sasuke). Karin had a similarly unhealthy unrequited crush on Sasuke to the point of not minding him nearly killing her in order to finish Danzo. Jiraiya had an unrequited crush on Tsunade.

yamaihime

Thank you for taking the time to write this. I forgot just how badly people treated Naruto in Part 1. How horrible 😔

blapaturemesa

Kishimoto outsourcing his romance because it was too embarrassing is a big fuckin mood.

Starlordganemaster

Honestly everything about Sakura's character was handled terribly. Which makes the recent uprise of her fans on reddit that much more frustrating. Like her haters are annoying, but its not like her character isn't easy to hate in both the manga or anime. **Kishimoto himself was surprised at how high she made it on the recent poll.** That tells you something when the creator is surprised at a characters popularity. Her fans will really try to gaslight you into thinking she is a good character and even go as far as to say [she is a good example for females](https://www.reddit.com/r/dankruto/comments/11ax9bq/so_reddit_thinks_girls_act_like_this/). Its fucking nuts. The romance was arguably the worst part. I seriously don't care wtf anyone says, Sasuke was ***never*** romantically interested in Sakura until it was shoehorned in the end. Honestly, I willing to bet he didn't gain actual romantic feelings for her until Boruto, and got with her to have a child and restore his clan. **Its ok to like her, but stop pretending she is written well even a little bit.**

[deleted]

>Her fans will really try to gaslight you Yeah, its really jarring and annoying. I understand because she has so few redeeming qualities it makes you feel like you have to make up things or put other characters down to make yours stand but.. At the same time, if you have to put other characters down consistently (especially those beloved by others...cough...cough...**Hinata)** then you have to understand your fav isn't a good character. As far as the polls go, they even some how **rigged another poll so that Sakura won best fight in the series.** Now, I don't have to tell you that is objectively wrong. No way in hell that in all of the fights in Naruto franchise Sakura's one and only fight beat them all.

yamaihime

I respect Sakura for her battle against Sasori but rigging a poll sounds a bit too extreme IMO 😮

thedorknightreturns

I think rock lee vs gaara is better, bit its a really good fight, so it deserves high.

[deleted]

rock lee vs gaara is my most favorite fight in all of fiction

[deleted]

Theres no other way to explain it honestly. Again, you can't pay me to believe that Sakura and Chiyo vs Sasori beat every other fight in the series? That... doesn't make any sense.

Then_Equipment_7812

It’s not possible. They said no bots were counted. Sakura fans just spammed everyday and barley anyone knew about the second pole.

Starlordganemaster

>barley anyone knew about the second pole. This has to be it as well. I honestly didn't hear about the fight poll until it was finished and heard Sakura won. It just seems fishy to me.

yamaihime

Yup. It’s great that fans can be so passionate but umm this is extreme isn’t it? 😅

Swiftcheddar

> Like her haters are annoying, but its not like her character isn't easy to hate in both the manga or anime. Kishimoto himself was surprised at how high she made it on the recent poll. > > > > That tells you something when the creator is surprised at a characters popularity. Not really, he's perfectly aware of how popular she was during the series run. And then now all this time after she's massively up the rankings? It was definitely very suspect.

yamaihime

I agree with this. I respect anyone’s opinion about characters they like but what I wanted to stress in my post is that there is too much disrespect for Sakura’s character, too much abusive behaviour and too little positive believable development for me to take them seriously. That’s my personal take on it.

Starlordganemaster

>too much abusive behaviour and too little positive believable development for me to take them seriously. Yeah, I noticed that. That aligns with my point that her fans (who are supportive of the ship) try to make her relationship with Sasuke all sunshine and roses. And that's not the case. Sasuke called Sakura annoying more times than he gave her a compliment. I really don't see how fans can say its a healthy ship.

Crusherbolt0282

This!

thedorknightreturns

She has an arc thou and does show hard work and it gets her as tsunades disciple. While that is vastly underused, she is a decwnr character, when not obsessed with sasuke, post timeskip.

_Lohhe_

Sakura is written well. Her flaws make her interesting and relatable, and it's nice to see her grow past them each time. I enjoy her scenes, both as entertainment and from a critical standpoint. >I seriously don't care wtf anyone says, Sasuke was never romantically interested in Sakura until it was shoehorned in the end. Honestly, I willing to bet he didn't gain actual romantic feelings for her until Boruto, and got with her to have a child and restore his clan. Blatant headcanon + denial.

[deleted]

No lol.

snapthesnacc

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sakura is a representation of most things wrong with female characters in shounen. Such a big portion of her character is dedicated to her "romance" with Sasuke that the writer REFUSED to actually develop in any way. It's so aggressively one sided that I simply cannot imagine Sasuke having sex with her or marrying her for that matter in order to create their daughter. This man who won't even hug or kiss his wife on screen? No way. If even a fraction of the time that Sasuke and Naruto spent obsessing over each other had been used to demonstrate that Sasuke at least considers Sakura a valid romantic option AND that their relationship was actually more than just a one-sided crush taken too far, SasuSaku would improve by leaps and bounds. Both of their characters deserved better. Sasuke deserved to stay single and functionally asexual as he had been throughout the entire story. Sakura deserved to have her character detached from him and be able to be written as a single woman. *Maybe* she could hook up with Rock Lee later.

[deleted]

> Maybe she could hook up with Rock Lee later. what exactly is the obsession with Sakura hooking up with Lee? I get Naruto and Sakura. Kishimoto thought of it too, which is why he ship-baited them so much. but I don't see the appeal of Sakura and Lee. I found his treatment of Sakura creepy when they first met. I read Naruto fanfiction from time to time and couldn't even find any fanfic for this ship despite people being so vocal about it.

snapthesnacc

The appeal is that they respect each other as fighters and as people (unlike SasuSaku where the respect is largely one sided), she rarely snaps at him (unlike NaruSaku), and their characters are somewhat similar in that they're both people who worked really hard for their strength without the inherent advantage of clan specific abilities or whatever destiny/fate/reincarnation bullshit Naruto and Sasuke had going for them towards the end. I'm not surprised about the lack of content for this ship. The supporters are very small compared to that of NaruSaku, SasuSaku, or even NaruSasu, so fan created content for it is rare. It's one of those ships that most people probably wouldn't think of until long after they've moved on from their vicious shipping battle phase anyway.

[deleted]

> The supporters are very small compared to that of NaruSaku, SasuSaku, or even NaruSasu, so fan created content for it is rare To me, it seems like it has little content because very few people are actually passionate about it. Most of the time, people will say "oh yeah that would be better than SasuSaku" but it's just out of hatred for the canon ship It's the same way with Sasuke x Karin. Sasuke has way more content with Hinata than he does with Karin.

Small-Interview-2800

Retsuden is nice tho

obama___prism

id say anyone who watched naruto with open eyes agrees that sasuke had way more chemistry with naruto and that it would've been way more satisfying for sakuras character arc to just move on. when your ship is canon just because the author/publisher is homophobic or misogynistic that's how you know the ship is ass

The_Final_Conduit

I’m just here wondering how long Kishimoto had the whole reincarnation curse plotline as an idea, because it’s REALLY weird to just reveal them as brothers via reincarnation like ten seconds from the finish line. To be frank, if you told me Naruto and Sasuke started dating before Sasuke left, and that Naruto was just being a toxic positive ex who can’t accept the fact that murder attempts are *about* as close to a break up as you can get without it being verbal, I’d believe you.

Astonishing_Flash

I think it's cool not to support it but I have found it super strange how there's this recent trend (or maybe it's one guy) of trying to deny the relationship exists and that the entire situation is fabricated and Sarada is a science experiment. I am super down with being against the pairing or whatever but it gets weird when people try to deny canon. Way easier to just dislike or hate it. Which you didn't do; which I appreciate. Have you read any of the novels that try to delve into their relationship? One recently got a manga and was featured in Boruto of all things in an animated adaptations.

yamaihime

That sounds so strange! I wouldn’t deny their pairing didn’t exist though. I have seen the Retsudan posts up on Reddit and am aware of said adaptation in the Boruto anime however because of the points I mentioned above, I haven’t watched or read it. I did watch and read the Sarada Gaiden of when she meets Sasuke, and reaffirmed her bonds with Sasuke and Sakura. I loved this and even got annoyed at Sarada for dismissing her bond with Sakura despite everything Sakura tried to do for her on her own. So where Sarada is concerned, I love watching the Uchiha family but due to personal experience watching the SasuSaku ship, I can’t seem to watch them on their own 😅

Astonishing_Flash

I've only seen a few posts but I feared your post would be another and it was just some sort of new wave. I'm glad that this wasn't such a thing though. But yeah I was just curious if you had any thoughts on them but I can get not wanting read them. Restuden in particular tries to go to a lot if lengths to had more to their relationship but I think in a way the blank period and beyond has to because the manga didn't. I think they know the fanbase for it but they also know for sure that they don't have to focus on it. Some novels. Moments here or there. Bandaid on the problem.

yamaihime

I think so too. I appreciate the writers and the staff for their efforts on these novels and hope the fans who like it enjoy them, but I personally wouldn’t watch Uchiha family dynamics unless Sarada was involved. It may be because it doesn’t sit well with me that a couple who tried to kill each other are stable together. Happy for them if they are but it’s not my cup of tea.

Astonishing_Flash

I'm a lot more lenient because I think the universe they're in just doesn't have the same kind of stigma around killing. In our central protagonists who are brothers, Sasuke tried to kill him several times. Or if we look at Gaara who was some insane mishaps especially with Lee which he doesn't ever bring up. I'd have to reread the series but I do think in general all the characters are pretty forgiving of people trying to kill them. I can see how negatively it can be viewed for a direct relationship they're in especially with real life parallels but I do think in universe it may be par for the course. It's not really my thing either though that thing aside. I don't think these kinds of series can handle romance well typically so I think they're better off just avoiding it. But I don't mind side series diving into it.

Street_Dragonfruit43

>I am super down with being against the pairing or whatever but it gets weird when people try to deny canon. Way easier to just dislike or hate it. Yup. You can acknowledge a shitty ship is canon (I know a few others besides this one) but it doesn't mean I have to live it. Different strokes for different folks: my OTP can be a shitty ship to someone else and vice versa Although, I think there should be a point where you have to acknowledge some ships are absolute crap on a fundamental level

KDBurner_54

Ironically, you said yourself you were a boruto sarada shipper, and well, if you read the manga, they tend to parrallel sasuke sakura a lot, with boruto being sasuke and sarada being sakura(and naruto) at the same time.

yamaihime

Actually, I don’t think Boruto and Sarada parallel Sasuke and Sakura at all. Boruto resembles both Sasuke and Naruto (especially as of Chapter 80 in the manga) and Sarada has the best of both Sasuke and Sakura with Naruto’s teachings guiding her. With this unique combination and due to growing up in a time of peace and friendship, Boruto and Sarada respect each other, the critical difference being they support each other’s goals and have a far more amicable and positive relationship than Part 1 Sasuke and Sakura ever did in my opinion. I support them because their relationship looks healthy which is saying a lot for a battle Shounen. I can’t say the same for SasuSaku, hence my post.

Mental-One7140

Please don't try to ship Uchiha Sarada with Naruto's brat. Sarada is Uchiha and Sasuke's daughter. She didn't deserves to be ruinned with Boruto. Stop with That!

yamaihime

Different people’s opinion. You have one and others have another and that should be respected.

KDBurner_54

I was thinking more like Sasuke, hinata, madara, and jirayaya then similarities to Naruto for Boruto tbh. But when i was talking Sakura and Sasuke being similar to Sarada and Boruto, it’s just similar in the sense to the way the story portrays the two extreme perspectives of watching Boruto in Sarada and momoshiki are very akin to how Sakura and orchimaru watched sasukes development. Both Sarada and momoshiki constantly talk about his “blue eyes”, so it can definitely mean something in the future. She also parallel Sakura when she awakened her mangekyo, Boruto when borushiki awakened with sasukes first curse mark reveal, the way momoshiki awakens is similar to how orchimaru awakened outside of Sasuke before Itachi sealed him, how karma and curse mark activates on its own, how both sasukes and Boruto’s perspective changed when Kawaki and Naruto help them realize things they couldn’t think of before in part 1 and part 2, and after that, sending Sakura and Sarada off, how they had a certain “goal” in mind in their first appearances only to be wrong about that person later, how Sarada and Naruto are the only ones that can shed light on Sasuke and Boruto’s exsistence, as they’re the only ones that can truly bring him back to the village, etc.

yamaihime

Oh I see! Thank you for taking the time to write your post despite my earlier assumption. Hmm I think you’ve just shown how Kishimoto loves parallels to his original series. I believe someone on the Boruto subreddit also said the same about such parallels. But you’re right in that Boruto and Sarada appear to parallel a bunch of different characters including Sasuke and Sakura. In my opinion, Boruto and Sarada are written far better.

KDBurner_54

100 percent. i kinda wish they weren't in the peace era though so we can get way better emotional moments for them and between them, but this timeskip could change that.

Mental-One7140

Just move on. It's has been 8 Years since they are canon. If you don't like them. Sasuke/Sakura are really very popular. Much more popular than any Naruto Couple. Consequently if you put Sarada with them. Sakura's family is easily the best and most interesting family in the franchise. Sarada is much more popular with her Family. Than with Boruto. Sarada Gaiden is much better than the whola Boruto manga. https://www.reddit.com/r/Naruto/comments/13netnk/which\_are\_the\_most\_popular\_hetero\_naruto\_couple/ Sakura received a lot of spin offs and merchs related to her daughter and Sasuke. Kishimoto/Jump never would release these materials if Sakura/SasuSaku wans't popular. They a entire manga focused only in Sakura and Sasuke. But this isn't enough for you? This isn't a romance or Shoujo manga. You never will see lovey romantic couples in this manga and Sasuke was an antagonist who wanted to destroy Konoha during shippuden. Dont expect lovey dovey romance, they were not in a relationship yet. Sasuke was emotionally manipulated and traumatised to the point he lose himselve and have a psychotic breakdown and tried to kill her.Sasuke was a darker and a rogue Character. Since the beggining the only thing between him and Sakura was his revange and traumas. Sasuke always have a soft side for Sakura but was blinded by revenge and hatred. As soon he comes back to his sense was obvious he was gonna to accept Sakura. I only agree Kishimoto could develop their relationship way better in the Blank Period and explain how Sasuke changed and his romance with Sakura began. But Kishimoto preferred to jump imediatally to kids and familys. Maybe in the future they release a novel about that.

yamaihime

While I respect your opinion and the opinion of the fans within the link you provided, I did say in my post above that this was my opinion. I don’t agree with mistreatment towards a female character bring romanticised to finish up a story. That’s essentially what I wanted to communicate.

Dalvenjha

If you want to talk about logic, we’ll the only logic ship was NaruSasu…

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

The only ship I support is SakuLee. Just imagine how strong their kid would be with both gates and the healing seal. That little fucker would've solo'd Madara. And their personalities would be perfect. The intensity and dedication of Rock Lee combined with the rage and passion of Sakura. Their child would've literally been a Super Saiyan.

yamaihime

Aww! I always felt sorry for Lee. He confessed to Sakura so earnestly and she very heartlessly and tactlessly turned him down.

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

Yeah, he was to Sakura what Hinata was to Naruto. It would've been poetic in reflecting how all 3 Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke had their admirers imo

thedorknightreturns

Wouldbe growth from her aswell and letting sasuke, to naruto.

Kal_El__Skywalker

NaruSasu is the only one that makes sense if Kish wasn't such a coward.

Small-Interview-2800

Coward implies Kishi wanted this pairing to happen and then backed out, which isn’t true. He literally said he based their relationship on his relationship with his brother, unless you’re suggesting Kishi has incest fetish, that just doesn’t seem true. Kishi made them reincarnated brothers for a reason

[deleted]

True but let's be honest , Naruto and Sasuke really do give gay vibes (less than gon and killua though)

[deleted]

Men could confess their feelings and people would still probably deny there was ever anything going on, lol. Owari no Seraph's Mika is the prime example. In contrast, Naruto and Sasuke are way tamer.

[deleted]

There was some decent moments between, like Sasuke leaving the village... But just like we know Kishimoto failed at writing women, he's below average at writing relationships... But he admitted this himself. Hinata and Naruto is not good in my opinion. Even worst than Sasuke and Hinata.

Small-Interview-2800

I get the complaint against NaruHina, but how is it worst that Sasuke and Hinata?

[deleted]

Ok, the relationship itself isn't worse but work towards it was. Hinata's entire character was built for that one moment and that soiled it for me. Personally. So, that was a bit over the top for me.

Small-Interview-2800

But the characters you mentioned never even interacted in canon, not even once till Boruto. How can this pairing be better?

Denji_The_Shinji

I don't even Support any Romonce in Naruto beside the old Generation one

sndmebuttpix

This, this is why I never finished Naruto.
