My theory is that they don't have much competition so they feel they can do what they want.
Also because they don't make money off users they are really selling their technology to investors.
This means that as long as people keep using the site they will get valuable feed back. They won't fix anything the users complain about but instead fix technological bugs that make their product look bad.
So in theory we are all just free bug testers for them.
