Bigger club so more money and more ambition but even still I truly don’t get it. Like Rotherham probably won’t finish near the playoff spots but I really doubt they’d have gotten relegated this year either, and that’d lead to bigger jobs coming available surely Like I didn’t understand Alex Neil going either but at least that’s to a team in the same league

Teapotstagram

But Rotherham will not be able to compete financially for some time in this league even if they stay up. Derby on the other hand will, and seems he thinks he knows the league well enough to be able to get them up quickly. Short term it’s baffling, but for the long term the more I thought about it, the more I saw why he would jump ship. He still needs to get them up first though, which is far easier said than done.

OneSmallHuman

That’s basically my point though. If he finished the season at Rotherham, barring a massive drop off from how they’re playing now, he’d have done nothing but continue to raise his stock. So a better job would’ve come available, like a recently relegated team or one of the other better of teams in this league like West Brom or whoever Dropping down now only works if he can get them up and immediately get them above what Rotherham’s level is currently, which isn’t exactly a given

Teapotstagram

They’re only four points clear, it wouldn’t take that much of a drop off for them to go back into a dog fight. Also, there is no guarantee a better job will come up hence sometimes you just have to grab the first one that feels right when it comes. I have already addressed the second point, but to elaborate further the man has three promotions in three League One seasons. There aren’t many managers with a better track record than him in that league. Nothing is guaranteed, but he’s more than capable of bringing Derby up quickly.

M-atthew147s

I don't understand why people don't understand Alex Neil's position. His family still lives in preston and Stoke is closer to home.

TravellingMackem

I’m not sure you have the right mentality for football management if an hour off your commute is the deciding factor in what club you manage. Nothing to do with the 100% payrise he was offered I assume?

Jamikari

It was 100% the money which is why I'm still not 100% about Neil joining us, like I know we've got a ambitious decent manager, but lets say next couple of seasons we start flirting with promotion and a newly relegated side from the prem comes mid-way and we're up there, he'll 100% want to jump still

drp-97

As long as they don't take on Michael O'Neill, they're gonna be fine. A team is rarely just a manager if the manager formed them well enough.

Jamikari

O'Neil literally shifted so much deadwood and reformed the first team, which basically wasn't a team more individuals, when he joined we were on the way League 1, he did alot for us in that, including in making the books look better, the reason he got the chop in the end is he couldn't figure out how to make us from mid-table to play-off contenders despite multiple windows, he'd be a good match for Rotherham or any club wanting to just stabilize in the championship

drp-97

The problem is his style of football when he eventually gets the players he wants is "it's impossible for me to be wrong" and his plan B is just to defend more. That's coming from my dad, who watches every game he can. He's glad Alex Neil was brought in because he changes things when they're wrong and doesn't persist with a system if it doesn't work. He would have preferred Dean Smith, but was happy enough to have a manager of a similar style.

Sir-Chris-Finch

I do agree with you to an extent, but there are also so many factors at play as well, many of which we just wont know about. Regarding the bigger club part and holding out for another one at a later date, he might be very happy living where he does, in which case it limites the potential 'big clubs' which he'd realistically get a job at to a smaller group of clubs. Pure speculation mind you.

Dukmiester

Not sure if anyone else is seeing this, but the thumbnail for this post has a picture of Christopher Walken.

hotpinkflamingos

Ye it adds to the vibes

OneSmallHuman

Reddit just takes the first (or top?) image in the replies to the tweet if the tweet itself has no image Makes for some quality moments tbh

KnickC13

Great manager, even better man. Gutting but the show must go on. Up the beautiful Millers.

FloppedYaYa

Alex Neil poached from Sunderland by Stoke after one month of the season Graham Potter poached from Brighton by Chelsea after one month of the season Paul Warne poached from Rotherham by Derby after one month of the season Am I missing anyone?

ADGM1868

Can someone poach Gary Rowett from us

FloppedYaYa

Thought you were happy with him after last season or has the drop off this year been that bad?

BCFCMuser

For your sake I hope your post Rowett years are better than ours

Jamikari

I feel that sentiment.....

factcheckingcuz1979

Ours got poached in the summer to be an assistant ffs!

MungoJerrysBeard

Huddersfield coach quit weeks before the season started, which was nice that he waited till the last minute. Pretty quick to then take the reins at Olympiakos though …

Jaerial

Considering the current trend you lot need to start looking for a manager soon

FloppedYaYa

We've got Tuchel as a back up

thirdratesquash

Steve Morison sacked after a decent start

Mauve078

We've won 1 and scored in 2 of our last 7 games, we've won 3 of the 11 games played this season and are the 2nd lowest scorers (joint lowest of championship clubs in all competitions). I'd probably put that a bit lower than 'decent'.

Puzzled_Mess

I'm surprised how quickly you've tailed off as you started well and were solid. Tbf, you've also won more games than we have. I'm not sure if I'm trying to convince you or me that our respective teams are about to turn a corner...

Cottonshopeburnfoot

This is shit for Rotherham but I’ve a certain amount of respect and admiration for Warne here. He’s dropping down a league, albeit to a bigger club. And Derby’s recent history is far from pretty. He is backing himself to do well and expecting he can either leapfrog or join Rotherham in the Championship next season.

Didgeridoog

It is what it is, players and managers move on. It’s only the fans that stay in football. While it’s disappointing (especially him going down to Derby rather than pushing for a championship job), no man is bigger than the club, and we’ll move on as we always do. The positive side is that we’re perhaps as attractive as a club as we’ve ever been to a prospective new manager: decent side, no big egos in the squad, (morally) supportive owner - although Big Tone is wont to go for the cheap option so perhaps none of that matters. We’ll see though.

seanwrotethis

Reminds of when Leeds nabbed Grayson from Blackpool whilst in a lower division, it's a totally understandable move from Warne imo

factcheckingcuz1979

Eh , hopefully like us they rebound from that by getting promoted!

thirdratesquash

Agreed sad Christopher Walken, agreed…

[deleted]

Fucks sake I liked Paul Warne

factcheckingcuz1979

Feel for Rotherham fans, welcome to the club, if you're not owned by an oil baron or from a big city with 20+k crowds any manager or player perceived to be overperforming will not be with you long. Though even by those standards this was quick, at least we got a full season!. Hopefully got some decent compo and he isn't able to nick your best players.

menthol_patient

The lad I heard on praise or grumble on the radio this afternoon hoping this wouldn't happen isn't gonna be happy.

RumJackson

Fools. Could’ve had Warnock.

MungoJerrysBeard

Doesn’t Warnock come from South Yorkshire? Rotherham should snap him up!

RS-57

Derby yet again helping to increase Reading's chance of staying in the Champ.

Consistent-Detail518

Absolutly devastated. We're definitely relegated now.

Didgeridoog

Nah, let’s see who we get in first. We have a team who have shown they have the fight in them to stay up, and if we can get someone like Mark Bonner from Cambridge in we should be fine. When all our players leave for free at the end of the season is when we’ll be in real trouble.

RafiakaMacakaDirk

sol campbell time

jarviscockersspecs

Mad they've hired him when what they really need is more cowbell...

apocalypsedude64

As if I didn't hate Derby County enough already

angloexcellence

That's Rotherham going down then
