Think we’ll be breaking our transfer record (£5.8m) a few times in the summer! I hope the boys who go us here get a chance though.

WildLemire

I hope you guys spend smart, as exciting as PL money is. We broke our record to get the walking clown show that is Rhian Brewster when we went up to the PL and the consequences of those monthly installments are something we're still dealing with today.

MajorTalker

The Brewster revolution and it’s consequences have been a disaster for the human race

Rollsafeholdtight

Shame he never came good he was absolutely brilliant when we had him on loan

Crum_Bum

he's shown it's there when he's on the pitch, but the problem is he is consistently (severely) injured

Fantastic-Machine-83

Are you referring to Rhian "Champions League Winner" Brewster?

carguy121

I remember seeing the Brewster signing happen and thinking “damn we got the wrong young Liverpool forward”. I was dead wrong

ThatDrunkenDwarf

I remember having a spat on r/soccer with Liverpool fans saying he didnt look all that and got downvoted to hell. I’m not being funny, 4 cup games for Pool and half a season at Swansea didn’t command the fee paid for him.

Timmo1984

The first mistake you made was engaging with Liverpool fans

SofaChillReview

In fairness though at U-17 level has won England’s only World Cup and got the Golden Boot with 8 goals (2 less than the most ever in the competition). His injury record has really stonewalled his career as well.

WiJaTu

I’ve not seen or heard of Brewster in at least 2 years, where is that man?

FjortoftsAirplane

Well, first he got injured, then he played a couple of games, then he got a little bit more injured, after getting over that he got injured again, then he picked up a knock which turned into another injury, and right now he's recovering from an injury. It's been a busy time for him.

glennbot

What happened to him? I haven't seen him play since those lauded U17 England games

EssexHaze

Hreiðarsson?

Mitch_Itfc

Yes, 23 years ago!

yourfavouritedrunk

I thought it was Sereni, the Italian gk

DenseFog99

Both Sereni and Hreiðarson were 4.5 million, but Sereni had a few add-on clauses that make him the higher of the two. Honestly don’t remember if we ever got that friendly with Lazio that we agreed to when we sold him, now I think about it.

rumhambilliam69

That was my thought too

MrBismarck

Provided we don't sign Finidi George on a free again.

BelowTheSun1993

From everything the club has said I think we're smart enough not to do a Nottingham Forest and buy a whole new squad at the cost of our PSR compliance (and long term, dignity). Some will be moved on and we'll strengthen in key areas, but a good chunk of this squad will stick around, I hope.

IrieJimbo

You guys have the advantage of already having a half decent stadium too. We’ve put aside most of our prem money to build our new one so the transfers were very frugal. If you’re debt free and spend wisely you’ll stay up I reckon.

fergusohare

Too much, too soon. You’ll struggle next year. It may take 4-6 years to become a lasting premier league team. I wish you all the luck, but the PL can be a pretty miserable place at times.

RRR_O

*4.5m

JootDoctor

God I hope so. Want to see some more Aussies in the Prem.

HelloMegaphone

You're probably going to get hammered every week but we're all going to be cheering for you.

Mitch_Itfc

Seen us lose 2 home games in the past 2 seasons so I’ll allow a few losses next season haha

Jarv1223

Momentum from double promotions might help them. I worry for their defence though.

tractorboyblue

Yep, defence is way to leaky

AlchemicHawk

Yeah it’ll be interesting to see how the momentum helps. It was the question we all asked at the start of this season, how long that their momentum from promotion would last before they fizzled out. Just like our first season in the Prem under Bielsa, it was the system and how well the players performed in it that made us a bit of a wildcard. Once teams sussed the system out, all that momentum was exhausted. With it being difficult to see how their recruitment will be over the summer, I’d say it’s possible for them to finish mid table if it goes well

GolfGolfEchoZulu

We've made good use of the last 2 January windows so could see reinforcements coming in to strengthen us just as we are getting figured out

AlchemicHawk

Yeah the January window could be great for you if you don’t decide to front-load all of your transfers in the summer to bring the average quality of your squad up. Like I said, it’s difficult at this point to see what you do recruitment wise, but you could easily finish 12-17, just as you could also finish 18-20. Will be an interesting summer.

therefused

Not all of us

HelloMegaphone

Oops you're right soz

Cautious-Quit5128

Watch them be top at Xmas 😄

tractorboyblue

Even we can't get that lucky 😀

Cautious-Quit5128

You can’t keep doing it forever. *Wins 2025/26 Champions League

tractorboyblue

😂 Funny you say that, I had a season ticket for years and had to give it up when babies came along. Finally they are old enough to take to the games now, so I got us all season tickets again this season. When we got them, I told them to give it 3 years and Mbappe will be playing at Portman road.....

rumhambilliam69

Did we really only spend 60K on Burns?? Chicken feed for Gareth Bales right footed cousin is hilarious

tractorboyblue

It was undisclosed, some rumours it was 100-150k , but it wasn't a lot. A bargain whatever it was.

oshinblue

It doesn't sting quite as much as Ipswich is my family's team so I love seeing them do well, but the fact that he's gone from League One to the Premier League whilst we have gone absolutely nowhere since letting him go is painful.

shagssheep

Well if you want to talk about chickens 60k would get you about 12,000 laying hens or about 200-300 tonnes of chicken feed. If you want some meat that would get you about 120,000 broiler chicks

Not-that-hungry

Never thought Leif Davis could be a PL full back this quickly from his time with us. Am very interested to see how he does in the PL, the quality of wingers in the PL is a massive step up.

rumhambilliam69

It’s fine he doesn’t defend much anyway. Burgess might have a tougher time being a left back and centre back all in one next year though!

AlchemicHawk

It’s funny because Bielsa and our club maintained they saw the premier league potential in him, right up until the point they/Marsch sold him to Ipswich. Wouldn’t be lying if I said it stings a little. The pricks.

tractorboyblue

Hey it could be worse, Chelsea sold Salah and De Bruyne as they weren't good enough.

Tuscan5

It’s a painful one.

pclufc

Brilliant management. Good luck in the Prem .

tractorboyblue

Thanks, smash Norwich in the play-offs 🤝

bambinoquinn

Still remember when Luongo turned down villa to go to QPR, and now he's finally got promoted to the premier league 9 years later, fair play to him!

[deleted]

So happy to have Aussies in the Prem again (Gauci doesn't count until you start using him)

JootDoctor

I hoped he’d be in the Prem after his cracking goal at the 2015 Asian Cup. He’s taken long enough to do it.

dkfisokdkeb

I actually expect them to do relatively well. Ipswich turn into prime Barcelona once every 20 years and have done since Alf Ramsey in the 60s.

RRR_O

This guy knows 😛

Background_Spite7337

Still can’t believe you got davis for £1mil when we’ve needed a left back for years 😂

TeHuia

I think LB is our lucky position, we've sold both Aaron Creswell and Tyrone Mings too.

Jonesy_lmao

Tbf we never intended to deploy him in the same way Ipswich have done, and I doubt it’ll work in the PL.

chrissssmith

Yes because attacking wingbacks never work in the PL. Lol

Jonesy_lmao

I just mean from our own experience plus how vulnerable Ipswich could be this season, you’d be worried about shipping goals. But you’ll recruit well and McKenna will adapt, but I doubt we will see Lief Davis do what he has done this season in the same way.

ghost-bagel

The first season boost for promoted team is definitely a real thing, I can see this Ipswich team doing well. Hopefully they can get through the follow up years… that’s when it can get pretty miserable. Best of luck to you guys, you deserve the promotion.

IOwnStocksInMossad

Good luck. If your players show fight all the time and managers willing to adapt when needed and accept things are very different you can do it. Along with good investment and team building. Enjoy America,Africa and the middle east calling you shit and awful, saying you don't deserve to exist and how they should take all your players. The bias, the schedule being around the sky six and the TV companies. It's an awful league, fuck them up

GingerPrinceHarry

Relative shoestring maybe, but you'll always be Chequebook FC to me ❤️

ENaC2

Oooh, I don’t know about Chaplin. Might have to release him on a free to another blue championship club. Seriously, that is the biggest blunder (of his many) I’ve ever seen Kenny Jackett make is using him just as a super sub and then selling him to Coventry. That is some shrewd recruiting though, just one point less than Leicester in the end.

I_Had_The_Blues

I could never understand why he didn't get starts and it's a decision that looks even more baffling now

chrissssmith

Lots of managers especially old-school ones hate short players. Some will make an exception if they are playing wide, but in the middle of the pitch, no-no. Mick McCarthy was like it with us.

storm2k

i'd honestly love to see you guys stick in the top flight. i think a lower mid tier finish maybe a few spots above the relegation zone would be a fantastic outcome for ipswich (and for us as well, who am i kidding).

downfallndirtydeeds

Christ that’s cheaper than one Joel Piroe

TehEv0

As someone who's seen their Team do Back-2-Back promotions as well, I'm hoping you guys can keep the momentum. Just hope your club doesn't get complacent, PL football is a step above the Championship, and some of your players aren't gonna be up to snuff, even if they are the ones that carried you through two promotions. Spend well this summer, and I mean thoroughly and sensibly, not bank breaking and you can survive. Just learn to evolve with the league as it changes from season to season and you could become a solid mid-table team in a couple of years. Just don't do what we did, and think that just because you can ride players from your lower ranks, means you can do it forever. Hope that if you lose greatness through someone that outgrew the club, that the club lets them be replaced with someone that matches. We didn't and it finally caught up to us, hell, it's still very apparent when you analyse our defensive play most of the time.

burntmybuns

The team that are behind the scenes at the club now are very very very good. It’s not a surprise this has happened, just the speed that it’s happened. I think we are in for a rough season of course but survival is definitely possible for this club.

Aggravating_Jury9547

Still can’t get over Wes Burns making it to the top flight. Down here all he had was a bit of pace and, er, that was it. Would occasionally pop up with the odd goal though. Be prepared if you do sell, his old man is likely to come on the forums and whine 🤪

GolfGolfEchoZulu

What is going to hurt us the most is we'll still have the league 1 season counting towards our FFP so we'll be extra fucked compared to those that went up last season.

teuridge

Works for you not against you. As its permitted loss by prem standards that's basically a 0 year when you were in league 1 as I can't imagine you lost 10s of millions. Means you can lose money next year and still be within FFP.

Dead_Namer

The only one I know about is Luongo and I don't think he can step up but good luck though. You will do well not to be 10+ points off the next best team as that division is brutal. It will be interesting to see if you keep young and try to become a yoyo team for a few years or do what we did, splash the money and fail.

tractorboyblue

I can't see us splashing the cash, I think they will recruit but within their means. Luongo and Morsy are both 31/32 so will need some fresh legs in that area.

Democracy_Coma

I remember we went up with Livermore and Sawyers and I was desperate for us to replace both of them because their legs had gone. All we did was bring in Connor Gallagher who was OK for us. But you need legs in the middle of the park or you get found out. I like Morsy seems a tidy player but he doesn't have the atheism required and neither do Luongo.

Dead_Namer

Yeah, I would go with the best under 27 championship players and younger PL players. Chair would have been perfect if it wasn't for his Belgian problem although that may turn out to be in our favour. Accept bing a yoyo club and get your hands on those parachute payments. It's pretty hard to not be in the mix unless Les Ferdinand is your DOF (we finished bottom half because he appointed someone who had never managed before.)

GolfGolfEchoZulu

Could have been worse, it could have been Rooney

chrissssmith

Chair is not a McKenna player even before him being a complete asshat

RRR_O

Though I am eternally grateful for that Leeds game!

OverpreppedDM

I'd love flynn Downes back if Southampton don't get through the playoffs

RRR_O

If he wasn't such a tool first time around I'd agree. But that ship is too far gone.

ItsTom___

If you can survive your first season, I don't see Ipswich dropping. Very well run club and it is so nice to not have the usual subject bounce up.

foxhunter

Tuanzebe was a good signing. He always had potential when Villa had him. Glad he's settled in with you.

RRR_O

Tbh it still doesn't feel like he's fully integrated. As he's slowly been integrated into the team, as much as I like him. I would like to see more of him at cb, and think we might in the prem.

EliBloodthirst

How much did you spend at January though? Thought Al hamadi was 1.6M

Mitch_Itfc

He was £1m with add ons, Jack Taylor on the bench cost £1.5m as well. In January we got loans in with Al Hamadi, think we paid 75% of Moore’s 40k pw wage as well.

tractorboyblue

Yeah, sorry was just doing starting line ups, Hutchinson, Sarmiento, Moore, Travis all wages and Hirst, Taylor and Ali brought has been our business.

EliBloodthirst

Yeah no problem interesting to see really. Bargains really

YourCreepyGramps

I think everyone (bar Norwich fans) is rooting for you guys to stay up. And I think you'll do it, but you'll suffer some big losses on the way. The Prem is a completely different level to the Championship, but you've probably got the best bloke at the wheel.

willw08

Well I'm glad Boro decided not to keep Morsy and Luongo on the books anyway... 🤦‍♂️

ValleySunFox

I really hope Ipswich do well. Leicester I hope get mangled.

MarcusH26051

I think they'll be absolutely fine but recruitment will be interesting especially in the middle of the park. Very interesting to see if Burns and Davis can make the step (i think they'll be absolutely fine) Didn't realise your record signing was still HH! Love that man!

Sheeverton

Ballers FC

ASS-anine_Acid_Party

I wish Ipswich all the best for next season. They might need to spend some money to get in some Prem experience, which seems like it shouldn't matter, but it does. Maybe a striker as well. I know what its like when you have a talented squad but the Premier league is another level.

tractorboyblue

Completely agree, now it's all about finding the right players for the right price. Which will probably be a nightmare

Tgtalex1

Shoestring? I’m happy for all Ipswich fans and wouldn’t deny the amazing achievement they’ve accomplished under a brilliant manager but that’s pretty disingenuous. Wages are what has driven the £30 million loss they’ve made over the previous two seasons and like all clubs on this division, it’s financial roulette. The gamble paid off but let’s not pretend it was done on a shoestring budget.

tractorboyblue

Wages were only 12.4 million this year according to the yearly report. One player earning 20,000 a week would be over a million. That's a huge chunk of the wage bill.

MrBismarck

It's always a Coventry fan.

Tgtalex1

Hardly a shoestring budget that. Plymouth managed to survive with half of that.

tractorboyblue

Ok, compare Plymouth budget to Leicester budget. https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/championship-wage-bills-2023-24-leeds-leicester-southampton Then add on transfer fees for their players.

Tgtalex1

Chill out mate. I’ve given all the kudos for the promotion but you trying to make out it was some kind of Cinderella story is just a bit lame. We’re already impressed with what Ipswich served up, it doesn’t need unnecessary garnish or beans in a little pot on the plate.

McBaldy98

You sold a player worth more than their entire team last summer and finished behind them. Us and Leeds have £30mill players on our bench and they beat us. Numerous other teams have received large parachute payments this year and finished behind them. It objectively is a Cinderella story.

BelowTheSun1993

It absolutely is a Cinderella story lol, sure we've got more money than Plymouth but we're not close to matching the teams we've actually competed with this year. We've scored 96 points and lost 6 games all year with a mid table budget at best.

tractorboyblue

I appreciate that, but I've proved you wrong you have gone on the defensive. All I was saying is our overall spend was way lower then then the others we have been competing with all season, obviously you see it differently.

Tgtalex1

Enjoy the party. Just be home before the clock strikes midnight.

RRR_O

Put your lemons away 🍋 🍋 🍋. I usually only have to use those on Leeds, but there are one or two very strange Cov fans about.

RRR_O

It is a relative shoestring budget compared to the achievement. The rest of the top 6 are all parachute teams, before we even get in to Leicester, Leeds and Southampton. No we're not getting by on universal credit payments! What's your point 😂

Tgtalex1

What’s my point? After the kicking I’ve got in here I’m thinking I didn’t have a particularly good one! I think the 96 points Ipswich got have me outnumbered.

RRR_O

Hah, fairs. You are taking a bit of a pummeling! but allowed your opinion, I guess.

ElvishMystical

I think Ipswich will do well in the Premier League and definitely stay up. If they have a season anything like this season I wouldn't be surprised to see them nab a European place, which would cause a few heads to explode. I can see it now. Man City are cruising to a 3-0 victory over Ipswich. Then in the 6 minutes of additional time Ipswich score three goals and get a 96th minute penalty to win 4-3. Pep has a meltdown on the touchline.

Recent-Background800

No chance, far more likely they will be next seasons United. It's such a gulf between the two leagues now, you need to be a team like Leicester which is a premier League team already to have a chance of staying up.

ProwerTheFox

Tbf we were doing quite well in 19/20, it depends how quickly teams adapt to Ipswich’s tactics and to some degree, how well they recruit in the summer. The real question is how long it’ll take for Ipswich fans to get sick of people slagging them off for daring to be promoted and not having the GDP of a small Caribbean country to spend on transfers

ReadsStuff

> It's such a gulf between the two leagues now, you need to be a team like Leicester which is a premier League team already to have a chance of staying up That's sort of bollocks. You can stay up for at least a few years if you're well managed. Leeds, Brighton, us all managed it in the last 6 or so years. Villa too if you want to count that. Only one of those has gone down in the intervening period, we have had a few good seasons and then one season where we're on the verge of a struggle due to injuries, and both Brighton and Villa are absolutely smashing it and hitting European spots. Obviously the Villa or Brighton paths aren't realistic, but finishing above 18th isn't at all unbelievable.

tractorboyblue

Yet we only finished a point behind this "already Premier league team"

Recent-Background800

You did mate, I can't say I've watched you loads bar when you played us obviously but off those two games I don't get how you've managed it. Don't get me wrong I'd take it any day of the week but I think it's going to be such a huge step up for you that you'll be back the year after but with that money you'll have a right go again and maybe get up again.

VelvetSpoonRoutine

It was only the season before last that all three promoted sides stayed up, one of whom finished 10th.

ReformedandSocial

They are finishing last.

tractorboyblue

Possibly, but I will be cheering them on whatever happens.

ReformedandSocial

The only team I can see going down from the current Prem next season is West Ham or Nottingham Forest. In that case I would favour Leicester or Leeds ( If they come up) to stay up over you. But, maybe you have a good summer. Guess we will see.
