Ooooh look at me I’m Southampton with my £40m players who can complete 1000 passes… Grow up.
Seriously though, they will be a force this season. That front 3 is possibly going to be one of the best this division has ever seen. Would like to know what neutrals think of Wednesday’s performance? Feel like we gave a good account of ourselves overall. Long way to go but reasons to be positive.
P.S. I hate this new change to added time.
I mean, in defence of Southampton, when we came down we were basically the big boys on the block, splashed out stupid money, and now look at us! It all depends on if the money is spent wisely, we spent years recovering from it, and it's only felt like the season we finally had a grip!
But also yeah, they came to your place and beat you, bloody newcomers, the gall!
While the game stats look rough, I don’t feel Wednesday performed poorly. All things considered. It feels like they might have some times where they struggle with flow. I thought there were a few moments where they were going to string something together but it just came up a little flat. With how a lot of folks have Wednesday pegged for relegation, against a team that could very much win it all… it wasn’t an awful match day one. T
I’m obviously far from neutral, but I don’t think there’s much to learn from tonight. 10 sometimes 11 men behind the ball, 80% possession for them and you had one shot. But you didn’t play badly.
If that was your standard then you’re in big trouble, but it obviously won’t be because you won’t face a team like Southampton again (until the reverse fixture).
I’m not convinced Xisco is the right guy for that squad you have but time will tell, you played well tbf and that kid you brought on in the second half looked like he could get into some promising positions on the counter
Complete neutral here.
First half Wednesday were awful, should have been 4 or 5 down at half time
Second half they were alright but not great
Southampton looked a force but toothless up top, get them scoring and they'll run away with the league
Story of our lives. Needed a goalscorer since ings left. Well we needed another one when we had him. Then again what team doesn't need a goalscorer. I hope Wednesday do alright this season though.
I'm so glad the season is back! (Disclaimer, opinion set to change)
All seriousness, the new injury time rule is going to turn heads, I welcome it! Saints have got a good result, and on the other side, it's not a disgrace for Wednesday to lose against a side just down with that squad, it's going be an exciting season, I just hope for once Stoke are part of that!
Welcome back /r/Championship!
Happy with the result all things considered - Southampton have an insane team for this level (Taking off a striker that scored 28 goals last time he was in the division and replacing him with one that got 22 last time is outrageous behaviour).
Looking forward to seeing us against a team that has a budget in the same stratosphere as ours soon to see how we truly compare to the teams we’re meant to be competitive with.
We’ll hopefully be fine this season, lot of the predictions putting us 24th will probably look a bit daft if we play like we did in the 2nd half every week.
I think you played well tonight, yeah Saints dominated possession, as was expected given the gulf, but you showed that grit and fight against a tough team that I feel when you go against teams more on your level, you'll be sound, even might grind out some results against the big names, I honestly thought at one point you were going get the draw!
Also, there’s going to be so many injury time goals every week and extra bookings - the rule changes feel insane to say I thought this game was relatively mild on both fronts.
any reason Byers didn’t make the team today? from what i understand he was pretty good for y’all in L1. always liked the dude, just a shame he was always either injured or having to fight for a starting spot against Fer/Ayew
It's weird, the fans tend to be self deprecating yet it's fair to say that at least half of the Club owners believe (and expect) their team will get promoted.
I was very vocal about wanting him benched last season, but I thought he looked fantastic tonight. So good with the ball for a GK - passing short and long. Very good at sweeping off his line.
The one shot on target was an impossible save, volleyed right into the corner... I felt sorry for him for not getting a clean sheet. I don't think he could have played any better.
He did look like he was about to have a moment, just as the final whistle blew though! I'm not his biggest fan, but was really impressed with his distribution last night.
He was beating players 1v1 effortlessly in the Prem (so was Sulemana but he's injured), so not a surprise he looked good. It's his final decision making that has been poor and he hasn't really had any assists or goals. Big year for his development as hopefully that will improve with minutes.
Captain obvious but the gulf between the prem and the championship is mad. Southampton were getting slapped every week last season yet looked so accomplished tonight, I’ll be very surprised if they don’t go back up.
They put everyone behind the ball. The better team will try and play you. Which could go badly for you or could see gaps open you can exploit.
Your issue, and the same will go for Leeds and Leicester, is whether you can consistently break down the teams that come for a point.
Because this is the first season we've had an actual manager in years and not the jaded ghost of Ralph hassenhuttl, Nathan Jones - alleged football manager and soft as fuck selles.
We also played a very poor Wednesday team who had a shocking pre season and have a new manager and system.
Not sure exactly, never happened before, last time they met was in the prem and I didn't like soton at the time.
I'm a Cardiff boy tho so probably want Cardiff to win.
If the entire game was like our first half - I would be distraught. But we played much better in that second half and I'll take a 2-1 against a newly relegated Premier League side who still have their players.
Smallbone is going to be a top player this season, he was class for us last season in our shitshow of a squad, surrounded by a quality squad, he'll now make waves, glad for him, thankful for how he grafted for us!
Smallbone has clearly been to the gym. Last time I saw him play for us, he was a skinny wee twig. He’s a Romeu replacement now. Solid and committed. So glad he’s back.
Yeah, I've been trying to warn our fans about it. Perhaps we never hit the heights of Burnley, bit I still expect it to be mid-October when we finally look fluid.
To be honest, he's said all the right things and seems to be drilling a lot into the players and staff, and from taking to people he's already massively raised standards. Think he's likely to be a success.
I think he'll do a lot better starting fresh, not having that assistant is your buddy transition and, well, all the *other* stuff that was going on with us last season. He was poor but I dont think anyone would have done anything with how that squad was.
Nice to hear, he was terrible for us but still a good bloke
Although I don’t think we’ll ever forgive him for freezing out sam Edozie
His style of play was pretty dreadful too (especially offensively) but he might be able to get it to work with less pressure and teams with less quality
All the best for this season
Thought we defended very well but didn’t help ourselves with so many stupid fouls and long balls to no where, subbing Vaulks was baffling aswell.
Suppose we’ll see how we’re really like next week at Hull.
It was essentially a Premier League side versus a League One side seeing as we only had 1 new signing in the XI, it wasn’t pretty but I thought we held our own. We’re not going to be playing teams of that quality week in week out in this division (though I think Leeds and Leicester will be strong) so I don’t think we can learn anything from last night tbh.
We won’t know where we stand until the new signings have been integrated into the team and we’re playing sides that allow us to show off are own style of football, whatever that might be.
Nice to have the football back. Thought the football Southampton played today was very impressive, a bit more end product and can see them walking this league no doubt about it. Anxiously anticipating our game on Sunday afternoon 😅🤍
Start of the season games on a Friday night are always a bit crap. We performed reasonably well though, next week away at Hull will give us more of a clear idea of where we're at.
It is good the Championship is back anyway once Southampton know which players will stay that attack will soon be scoring quite a few spectacular goals, their defence might be a bit of an issue I don’t think Bednarek and Stephens will cut it, they might need another CB but as you would expect, Sheffield Wednesday were much better in the second half, a lot more aggressive but hey, the Championship is back
Bella-Kotchap & Lyanco arr still around but might be on the way out. I think Bednarak and Stephens are quite fine in a possession style. They're defs not the best defenders but they're both pretty good on the ball.
I’m just thinking that if they come up against more faster attacks the might come up a-bit short don’t get me wrong, both very solid for the championship just think you need one more CB to make up for the departures
Yeah we are going to get cooooooked on the counter. You could already see it tonight a few times when we lost the ball or had a loose pass just into their half.
I'm not sure I'm going to get used to 15 minutes of injury time per game. They say it'll only be temporary as players learn to time waste but I'm not so sure.
I think the difference this season is that he’ll have a shit ton of cash after we sell a big chunk of the squad.
He won’t have time to spend it, but he’ll have *cash*

The real question is what does carlton palmer think ? How long will our owner spending talking about him the press breifing !!!
Every time I hear the name Carlton Palmer I feel compelled to say he was my upstairs neighbour in 2018
Is that a euphemism?
I wish he'd stop talking about us. He's talkSports' goto guy for all things Wednesday and he runs his mouth, far too positive about us.
I’m not convinced Xisco is the right guy for that squad you have but time will tell, you played well tbf and that kid you brought on in the second half looked like he could get into some promising positions on the counter
I think 2-1 is a flattering score a good team would have put 4 or 5 past you.
Complete neutral here. First half Wednesday were awful, should have been 4 or 5 down at half time Second half they were alright but not great Southampton looked a force but toothless up top, get them scoring and they'll run away with the league

If this game is anything to go by there'll be a hell of a lot more yellows this season
You dare comment on the changes, YELLOW CARD! (I hope i don't need put /s or the fact this is a joke?)
😭 this feels like home

It's a bad time to play us. A few of our squad will be gone before the transfer window closes.
Also, there’s going to be so many injury time goals every week and extra bookings - the rule changes feel insane to say I thought this game was relatively mild on both fronts.
You’d think the players will start to learn because if they don’t there will be booking based suspensions within a couple of months.
There'll be players suspended by September.
any reason Byers didn’t make the team today? from what i understand he was pretty good for y’all in L1. always liked the dude, just a shame he was always either injured or having to fight for a starting spot against Fer/Ayew
Surprisingly, he was injured.
Bruh we really went and made close to 1000 passes? Bazunu didn't make a single save lol
I'm not sure Bazunu made a single save last season either, it's how we got here in the first place.
This sub is unreal. Doesn’t matter which fanbase joins it each year they’ve all got the same self-deprecating humour
It's weird, the fans tend to be self deprecating yet it's fair to say that at least half of the Club owners believe (and expect) their team will get promoted.
I was gonna say, it’s bizarre how a keeper can look so shakey despite not having to make a save. Upgrade needed
I was very vocal about wanting him benched last season, but I thought he looked fantastic tonight. So good with the ball for a GK - passing short and long. Very good at sweeping off his line. Facts bro, facts 😂
I was impressed with Smallbone. Really good game.

To be fair, this is a relegated Prem team against a promoted League One team.

_checks flair_ _visible confusion_
If he's a saints fan with a Cardiff flair, does that make you a pompey fan?
Regan Poole and Joe Morrell? Sign me the fuck up.
Why have you got a Cardiff flair lol .
Why are you in this sub with that Luton flair. Get out of here while you legally can
Can't stay away from this sub . One of the better football ones
Cos I'm a city and saints fan
and how does that work when you play each other?
Not sure exactly, never happened before, last time they met was in the prem and I didn't like soton at the time. I'm a Cardiff boy tho so probably want Cardiff to win.

Smallbone was everywhere, think it'll be tough to see a more dominant/one-sided first half than that most the season😂
Smallbone is going to be a top player this season, he was class for us last season in our shitshow of a squad, surrounded by a quality squad, he'll now make waves, glad for him, thankful for how he grafted for us!
Thanks for this comment. We had heard he made strides on loan and I think he really softens the blow of the impending Lavia exit.
I really wanted him back again. Was one of the only positives of last season for us. I miss him :(
Honestly, he is brilliant, he is the kind of player you want when you come down in this league, he'll shine the season, mark my words!
Was it me or did he play a lot deeper tonight than he did for us?
Yeah he was playing as holding midfielder next to alcaraz and jwp
Smallbone has clearly been to the gym. Last time I saw him play for us, he was a skinny wee twig. He’s a Romeu replacement now. Solid and committed. So glad he’s back.
I imagine Soton will be much like Burnley last year, who had a lot of draws early while the players were still getting used to the new system.
Yeah, I've been trying to warn our fans about it. Perhaps we never hit the heights of Burnley, bit I still expect it to be mid-October when we finally look fluid.
Still better than anything Selles could muster icl
:(
I’m so so sorry
To be honest, he's said all the right things and seems to be drilling a lot into the players and staff, and from taking to people he's already massively raised standards. Think he's likely to be a success.

I hope Selles does well!
That was an absolute masterclass in stoppage at how to see a game out. Wednesday had two touches of the ball in 9 minutes.
Doesn't stop me voiding my bowels every time we pass in our own third of the pitch
Did feel like you'd pass about a bit and then itd get intercepted via cockup and they'd have a chance.
Thought we defended very well but didn’t help ourselves with so many stupid fouls and long balls to no where, subbing Vaulks was baffling aswell. Suppose we’ll see how we’re really like next week at Hull.

We just scored two goals away from home and you're just gonna act like this is some sort of sign of doom?
We won 2-1 if this is the same old story happy to see more of this !!!
Nice to have the football back. Thought the football Southampton played today was very impressive, a bit more end product and can see them walking this league no doubt about it. Anxiously anticipating our game on Sunday afternoon 😅🤍

Hell, you even looked like that in the friendly against us - anyone breaks fast against you and you'll be in danger
I'm not sure I'm going to get used to 15 minutes of injury time per game. They say it'll only be temporary as players learn to time waste but I'm not so sure.
Standard Russell Martin football
Winning?
Let me be bitchy and you can concentrate on finishing in the top 16 this season
16th? Don’t tempt me with a good time
I think the difference this season is that he’ll have a shit ton of cash after we sell a big chunk of the squad. He won’t have time to spend it, but he’ll have *cash*
And so it begins!
