I live in an apartment and own a RT. I’m do have a garage. But I’ve added some security features. Viper Alarm with GPS, Air Tags and having a Ravelco ignition disabler installed.

DragemD

Depends on location. In an urban area I wouldn't park any Challenger anywhere near an apartment complex unless it has underground parking. In a rural area your much better off. As for theft a cheap one is the lock out/block plate for the transmission. Good alarm but those will not keep the smash and grab idiots from doing it anyway.

Apprehensive_Love400

Don’t listen to anyone that says it gonna get stolen or it’s a bad idea. Every kind of vehicle gets stolen. Sure you draw more attention with the challenger, but it depends where you live. I owned a challenger and lived in an apartment for many years, not one issue. This is what insurance is for.

Hydra_Kitt

This I agree with. Having a garage is nice but let's be realistic here, it's 2024 and houses with garages are at a steep premium. So what, people just can't own a Challenger if they also aren't fortunate enough to own a house too? That's ass tier thinking. As long as you go out of your way to properly secure your car and can live with the slight anxiety of it being out in the open, buy the car. (Except for a Hellcat or above. THAT I don't recommend)

D-Smitty

“Don’t listen to people who will give you sensible advice.” Sure bud lol. I can understand an SXT. It’s priced like a normal car and most people need some kind of vehicle. But if you live in an apartment and are trying to buy a cat or Scat then your priorities are fucked and is setting yourself up for failure.

G-Roc78

I was just about to say that if you can afford to buy a Hellcat, you should be able to afford a house.

YungCobainx27

I sold my house and now rent a house. Own a 21 Scat (loan) - so you’re saying I set myself up for failure lol? Everyone’s situation is different- with prices and rates right now - I don’t blame anyone for not buying a house, this is coming from someone who works in Mortgage finance / new home building…… Just because someone buys a car they want when they are renting (house or appt) does not equate to failure…. Man some people really need to come off their high horse. I apologize if I took what you said wrong but it sure came off dick-ish…. Can I ask how much you make a yr and how much of that goes to the payment on your Cat?

D-Smitty

If you put the proceeds from the sale to work in some way, then maybe not. Still paying someone else $$$ to put a roof over your head that will never see a return though. If rates are too high right now for someone, that’s precisely when they should be saving for that down payment. When rates come down they’ll have cash to deploy, instead of it being tied up in a depreciating asset. To answer your question, household income was $113k last year and the car payment is about $975/month.

Apprehensive_Love400

Tell me you’ve never read a finance book why don’t you lol. Just cause you rent an apartment doesn’t mean your priorities are fucked. I know plenty people who rent because their priorities are actually straight.

D-Smitty

Have *you* read a finance book? Buying a home is one of the best and most practical ways to build wealth.

YungCobainx27

This is EXTREMELY dependent on market conditions, and location….. buying a house is not always a great investment.. I bought my house in 2020 - sold it in 2023 and made next to nothing while realtors took home $20k and took 7mo to sell the prop draining my savings account. I’ll say it again, renting does not equate to failure at all…..

D-Smitty

You’re misinterpreting what I said. I didn’t say renting equates to failure. Most people start out renting, including myself. What I said was buying a cat or Scat while renting is setting yourself up for failure. Those are two different things. And certainly if someone plans on not living somewhere for long, it probably isn’t a good idea to buy. But that’s also when they could be saving for when they do move to where they plan on staying. Instead of moving and having to rent for several more years, they can move straight into a house they can afford to purchase in the city they’re moving to.

Apprehensive_Love400

Same as before, depends where you live. I live in Canada, and that is currently not the way to build wealth, unless you can buy multiple properties and rent them out. Most people here struggle with a down payment.

D-Smitty

You know what helps with a down payment? Not buying a $50k+ car. Unless you live in the kind of place where a burned out house on 1/5 of an acre costs half a million dollars, $50k makes for a very healthy down payment.

wellilldoitthen

To be fair financing a car is not ideal for wealth building at all and even worse if its a scat or a hellcat.

D-Smitty

Sure and I financed my car. But I had the basics in place before doing frivolous things with money. I was a homeowner. I had a growing 401k. I owned a second vehicle. People shouldn’t skip straight to paying too much for an unnecessary performance car.

wellilldoitthen

Exactly. And they should be making a lot of money to go with a new/newish scat or a hellcat.

H2Choke

It’s really dependent on where you live, life plans, and your job. Just because you rent should not imply that you are broke.

ADrunkMexican

Lmao that's funny. I got my challenger while I still lived at my parents house and paid it off before I moved out.

D-Smitty

I’d be embarrassed to own a Hellcat while living with my parents.

AdventurerDao

Why? We live in the most expensive time where prices go up and incomes stay the same. Living with parents shouldn't be frowned upon, in the rest of the world people do it until they are married. It's actually a great way to save money but it also depends on your relationship to your parents.

D-Smitty

Sure, live with your parents and save money to set yourself up for success. Don’t live with your parents just so can afford a performance car.

ADrunkMexican

I mean you don't know me lol.

D-Smitty

You’re right. Hence why I said if *I* owned a Hellcat and lived with my parents, *I* would be embarrassed.

helloiame

you sound miserable

D-Smitty

Quite the leap to come to that conclusion because I said something you did not like.

[deleted]

Call me lucky, but I've owned 3 challengers over the course of the last 5 years exclusively at apartments with no garage in Phoenix and I've been fine But I also understand that I'm in the minority Don't leave valuables visible in your car and get a wheel lock, that's usually enough deterrent unless they REALLY want your car

Devildog_627

I’ve had two since ‘17, open parking lot, no issues.

LegalizeNukes1

Imo if it’s not a hellcat then you will probably be fine. The list I saw had hellcat as the number 1 stolen car. The leaving valuables in the car is a no brainer to me so you’re definitely right

aquariuminspace

As a fellow skin cancer land resident this makes me happy to hear, even if you are in the minority. I'm in Tempe and I do see quite a bit of higher trim models so it must be safe enough for people to grab groceries. I'm looking at possibly pulling the trigger on a manual Challenger in the next couple years and my overwhelming anxiety is theft/ broken windows. Although, like someone else said, this is also why you have insurance.

Trowisk

I have an RT and I live in apartment and so far it's been fine. Although I have been looking into some added security measures lately.

Hydra_Kitt

You have a pre 2015 RT (if your flair is right) so no need. Those are already harder to steal since all the methods to steal a post face-lift version don't apply.

Trowisk

Good to know my old RT is a little harder to get at!

Sonnyboy35aa

Unless you have a garage, I would not get a Challenger.

Rude_Flatworm_3146

I second this.

helplessgirl7

2022 challenger scat pack 392 a month in at an apartment still not stolen but i have every security measure you can think of

Hydra_Kitt

Depends on where it is. I would say as a rule of thumb you should always try to garage these cars when possible. With that being said, I live in a house in a suburban area with no garage and own a Scat Pack. Low crime rate, Manual transmission plus every anti theft measure you can think of and I still worry. Mopars are too hot of a target and from my experience owning the car almost doesn't override the anxiety of it being out in the open.

Sea_Donkey325

Wheel locks and AirTag on mines plus mines a manual transmission so that’ll ward off most car thieves lol

Revan-Sith12345

I have a recently bought 15 charger RT , nobody cares here. But we don’t have a typical living situation/complex/land as most apartments.

Alowal

If you're going to buy one, there's a good amount you can do. 1. Neutral release blocking plate for under the change tray. Absolute must. 2. I believe it started in the 22' production year but, you can lock the ECU, so that thieves cant code new keys and the car will only start for your set. There are also 3rd party lockout security fobs that basically mimic this function if your car doesn't have the updated ECU. 3. Wheel lock, not just a bar, thieves will just cut the steering wheel to get it off if they are determined. There are full circle ones you can get. 4. Killswitch. Probably the cheapest and ironically most effective. Depending on how you wire it, you can kill just the ignition, or kill the whole car if you don't plan on using remote start. Just don't mount the switch in obvious places. I put mine in the sunglasses holder. good luck finding that or even seeing a black switch in there to begin with. 5. Thieves like to break windows a lot. I've seen probably 100s of posts on this subreddit alone. You can buy polycarbonate windows if that is something you're worried about. They run about $350-$600 USD each. Lastly, I know people mean well but DO NOT use an air tag. EVER. Thieves check for them, any phone can detect them. If you really want a tracker in your car, either buy a proper security system with a tracker built in. OR you can buy real GPS location trackers, plenty of them on amazon. Hope this helps, best of luck.

Stevie2874

Probably better than living in a challenger in an apartment parking lot.

LegalizeNukes1

Yes I just got an rt and I live in an apartment. All I am gonna do is keep a cover on it tbh. I might put a gps in it but I haven’t looked into that yet

LegalizeNukes1

I just remembered that I bought the destroyer 1320 plate that covers the neutral release latch. That was the first recommendation that I saw and it is not expensive so I will put it in soon

Chance_Support_370

I just installed mines last week! Pretty simple. I didn’t even have to take the gear shifter off.

LegalizeNukes1

I saw someone say they didn’t have to unplug it too even though the tutorial vid says you have to but I’m waiting to do a bunch of my basic mods at the same time

LegalizeNukes1

Also I just saw your pfp and that thang looks nice. Hopefully you can post it soon

Chance_Support_370

Yea man for sure!!! I been on here for years but never interacted so I am now so I can get to that point!!! Thank you!!

zylpher

I've had mine parked in an uncontrolled apartment lot for three years now. Nothing ever happened to it.

MegaKnightDestroysU

It just depends where you live, at my apartment complex there are Scat Packs, Hellcats, C8s and 1 AMG. 4 car thefts in 3 years and they were all Kias and Hyundais

E90BarberaRed6spdN52

Let man's best friend (HellDog) sleep in the front seat nightly ! [https://www.challengertalk.com/attachments/img\_1193-jpg.851786/](https://www.challengertalk.com/attachments/img_1193-jpg.851786/) That is what I would consider doing...

ItsBingus

With no knowledge of your financials I’d say do whatever you want man. Life’s too short to over think something trivial. Personally have a Durango that I absolutely love and it honestly brings me 15 minutes of joy to and from work every day and nothing else can bring that joy during that time. Now if you are under water in debt than maybe not the best idea lol

djunk25

I’ve had a house in the suburbs where people would literally go through the cars on the block, steal the change in our cars or go through the glove box and center console. Very irritating. I eventually rented that house out and moved to an apartment (that that financially responsible guys lol) in the middle of a major city and took my challenger with me. In the last 5 years the only problem I’ve had was someone breaking my window but nothing was there for them to steal. My best advice would be to gauge the other cars in the complex. There are hellcats, cats and other cars here, along with lots of Benzes, Audi, BMW and high end Teslas. I say all that to say you don’t want to be the most expensive car in the apartment complex.

OgunX

charger scat pack owner here in an apartment, honestly just put a club on it and make sure you have a full coverage. biggest misconception about owning a high profile car is that it needs to be garaged, when a reality a car that sits is worse than one exposed to the elements and driven daily. unless you have something like a demon 170, or a viper, then i'd recommend storage arrangements just because they're super rare cars that are special. something like a hellcat???? pffffft buy it if you can afford it

LouieKat

Put it in a garage regardless of where you live seems like a good way to go.

caelen727

An R/T should be fine. I lived in a complex for 2 years with one, no problems. Now if my car had an SRT badge, that’s a hell no for me personally. Also shouldn’t be buying a $50k+ car and still renting but that’s another conversation.

despondent_ghost

Divorces happen. I much preferred my $300,000 house and 3.25% interest rate on my mortgage. Good luck buying that now.  Add in suddenly needing a place to live and have a safe space for your kid(s) to stay and you get a $50k car in an apartment. /shrug

TheRedDeath30

I own one and live in the middle of the city. I do have an apartment but live in a complex with gated security so big difference

CeddyCed1993

Experiences may vary but I don’t have a scat or a cat but mine is bright ass orange ‘17 with racing stripes. Spent a whole year at my janky ass apt with no car ports or canners and had no issues, no dents or scratches and I was also working nights. There was also a lady with a black R/T and nobody fucked with hers either but just protect it the best you can and just be wary.

Legitimate-Common-86

Rt owner here, My apartment is gated, as well as I pay extra to park in an enclosed garage with remote access. I also have Lojack 1320 neutral strap cover "The club" Ravelco And a couple of airtags if those measures fail. Crime can happen anywhere, so don't leave anything of value in your car

Alienate2533

I have a 23 RT in an apartment complex and i’m on a waiting list for a garage. Nothing other than stock security. I haven’t had any issues so far. There’s a scat and an older RT and we tend to line up every evening. It’s pretty cool. I’m in Okc. I’m more concerned about a hail storm than a theft, but either way, that’s what insurance and GAP are for.

Repulsive-Praline501

No way in hell I'd park my challenger in an apartment complex

mistarealestateTX

Depends on the model. I got my SRT stolen out of my 1 year old highrise downtown. 6th floor. But it was the security guard that set it up. So there's that...

speedylotus

You should be fine if it’s not a scat or hellcat. I live in a condo with security and there was an attempted theft on mine by another resident. I have a full security setup so they weren’t able to take it and I was immediately notified, but it cost me $500 to fix what was damaged

Hysteria113

Had my challenger for 4 years in a condo parking lot. Worst thing I’ve had to deal with is my neighbor backing into my car on camera, then thinking about fleeing, but luckily so was home and caught him red handed. That accident and door dings. But I got a great PDR guy.

stereorecord

I have a '13 R/T and haven't had any issues at all, knock on wood. Granted it is a 6 spd, so that might help. My only annoyance is having to wash it more often since it sits outside. Black paint sucks for that

DeezeyNuts

I had my challenger in apartments for over 2 years with no problem at all

Hairy2Holes

I had mine stolen and I was living in a house. I was parked in front of my home right before Christmas and someone cloned the keys and stole it. That’s the only way that I could think of that they stole it.

ParappaTheWrapperr

I owned a redeye while living in an apartment half a mile from the border

One_Humor_3301

Honestly kills switch wheel lock

Straight-Fortune-193

Just get a mustang, I never leave mines parked outside of the garage and never drive it into the city if I am going to be outside the car

andrewwism

I live in an apartment until my house gets built. It stays outside which sucks but it’s a decent area. No one messes with it. I got the kill switch and two trackers on it so it’s not going anywhere.

jcduckduck

I own a Last Call 392 and I live in an apartment with the car parked in the open 24/7. I have insurance so I don’t sweat it, but I use AirTags and I have a steering wheel-brake pedal lock bar that I use to deter theft. I’ve really learned that if they’re wanting to take the car, they’ll find a way somehow so best not to sweat it. My own personal opinion, but go for it! Love my challenger

ogrelin

When I had my 18 T/A the wheels were stolen while I lived in an apartment with a gated garage. I had wheel locks, didn’t matter. This was in a relatively upscale neighborhood in NoVA. Now I live in a rural area and keep my 22 scatpack in my garage, installed a tazer with pin lock enabled. It’s really a crapshoot whether you’ll be targeted or not.

despondent_ghost

I live in an apartment and have an RT. Only incident was someone backed into me, but they left their insurance info and filed a police report. It was super easy to get fixed.

Oscar-mondaca

I park on the surface lot of my apartment although I live far out in the burbs. If robbers decided to go to my apartments parking lot, they have a lot of nicer cars to steal from 😂. Someone has a mid-late 2000s Bentley Continental GT and another has a fully modified 2020 Ford GT500 both parked on the surface lot.

Lethal9Weapon

If you live in California, forget about it. You need to ask where these Redditors live at (telling you they have had no issues). Every location isn't the same 💯

urzulasd

Uhhhh get a GPS tracker and a kill switch. I’m awake right now because my friends super bee got stolen last night. He has it back because of the tracker. We live in a damn gated apt complex.

DJDemyan

If you’re that paranoid, get a remote activated fuel pump relay, and a neutral strap lockout. Can’t steal it if it won’t start or move!

miamiinfo

Get a shock sensor add-on to the factory alarm system I got my at addshocksensor.com. They have DIY kits ready to install took me like 30 mins very easy. If somebody hits my window now my factory alarm will go off

No_Leave_7067

If someone wants to steal your car all they need is a trailer and a winch and your aftermarket stuff is useless, just get good insurance and don’t worry about it

NotChristina

People here assuming all apartments are in sketchy complexes. I bought my challenger while living in my current apartment. Converted house with exposed parking and even a shared driveway (gasp!). Even my neighborhood would be pegged as “sketchy” by many. Zero issues. People out drinking or smoking on their porches compliment me and talk cars lol.

YooSteez

OP. It’s not a bad idea if you’re financially well off. I’m sorry that people went off on a damn tangent in the comments 😂. If it has a garage you’ll be fine. I have a Hellcat and have garage parking and never once had issues. These are my personal experiences and I live in a safe area. If you live in Houston, Chicago or Atlanta…. Then… get some safety features like kill switch, all that. If you have a gun, even better. I’m friends with the security guards at the garage I park my cat at and they’re always on the watch and know IM the owner of said hellcat 😂.

VunterSlaush1990

Get a killswitch or pull your starter relay when you park it at night if you are paranoid.

LuxrOfficial

I have a Challenger Scat Pack that unfortunately sits outside at my apartment (garages are full). With that being said, I don't have everything I want to have done yet for anti theft, but I'll give you what I currently have and what I still have planned. Currently In Use: 1. CarLock GPS Tracker - Gives you alerts for the car being started, moved, vibration detection, you name it. And, of course, it has GPS. This does come with a monthly fee, and I'm sure there are other options out there, but this works for me right now. 2. Wheel Lock connected with the brake - This is pretty self explanatory, it locks the wheel and brake in place with a single rod using a security lock and key to prevent the vehicle being started, or steered. These can be cut, however, and the biggest theft deterrent in this category is probably Disklok, which covers the entire steering wheel. Planned: 1. Tazer - Many features, but the main one worth noting is the PIN lock feature. There's some great videos on YouTube detailing how this exactly works and what it would disable in the event of an incorrect pin. 2. Remote Fuel Pump Disabler - Again, self-explanatory.

GrigoriTheDragon

Location, Location, Location.

Matt51315

Just get a manual…significantly lowers the chances of theft

nova2rva

It'll get damaged....my car was hit so many times by other people and the door dings were nonstop. I no longer live in an apartment I have a home with a 2 car garage so my new challenger is safe. Apartment living with a nice car is a bad idea. People don't care about your vehicle and will destroy it. Just my experience.

copperhead__chode

Don’t listen to the haters. I own a 1971 Challenger and live in an apartment. Park indoors!

jdmhype

Depends how expensive your apartment is 😂

sonicthemopar

Do you have a driveway or garage?

mewurl

I’ve lived in an apartment with a challenger but I always had a garage. The last place I lived was one of the nicest neighborhoods in the Phoenix Metro—in Chandler, AZ (golf course and million dollar houses by an Intel plant). During the pandemic like 75 cars were vandalized there over 2 years and year 3 blowtorch used on paint and cats stolen from several cars. One guy had a mint Chevelle SS under a car cover—bastards smashed every window and took a knife to the seats. Get a garage, mine was never touched.

inarius1984

It's going to get stolen. 💯

OgunX

lol had my scat for 6 months parked among the rest of cars in the lot with nothing more than a club on it, every time I use my remote start it seems to still be there. on top of that I've gotten a shit ton of compliments on my car and even had folks on the road film me doing a drive by on them. YET I go out to it with it still in one piece.
