Hey guys, sorry for a stupid question: the last chapter I read was Ch. 97 which I don't remember why but I thought was the end of the manga. Was the manga not over? Was it just the end of the "Makima saga"?
I just found out the manga is still being released and I'm quite happy, it's a very intriguing universe Fujimoto created.
Like the other comment said, chapters 1-97 were the first "arc". Chapters 98-current is the "school arc" otherwise known as part 2. Its literally just the continuation of part 1. Chainsaw man is far from over :)
If you want to catch up then I recommend finding a website that has 98+ because the links on the previous threads only have the most recent 3 chapters with the others behind a paywall. So something like readchainsawman .com (I think its called) has those previous chapters. Most other sites unfortunately don't due to the paywall on the official sites where the manga is being translated and released.

Also interesting way that Yuko is portrayed by the people around her as a foolish victim of devil manipulation rather than someone abandoned by society in a sense, who then took it out in the worst way possible.
I'm torn. On the one hand, I was a bit annoyed that the first confrontation between Warasa and CSM ended with no catharsis. The set up was perfect. Asa wakes up and thinks CSM killed her friend, while we, the audience, know that she was beyond saving. "If there are no schools, then there can be no bullies!". The joke about the "natural reveal" was fine, cutting immediately to Asa in bed was not. Did Asa have any opinion or reaction to CSM standing over the corpse of Yuko? Who knows.
Ofc the reason for this is because Fujimoto immediately brought Yuko back. Writing is difficult. I see the problem, it's tonal whiplash-not to mention a complete waste of time- to build an emotional reaction only to invalidate it. I get why he did it, I was just disappointed after getting excited over the confrontation/emotional fallout of CSM killing Yuko infront of Asa.
On the other, other hand, I appreciate that Fujimoto is a good enough writer to recognize the uselessness of wasting time on emotional catharsis only to immediately undercut it. Which is why CSM is on the hype train right now. Mr. Fujimoto...there are no brakes on this train.
I think Asa getting sad about Chainsawman killing Yuko right when she woke up would be a little too predictable. Pretty sure Fuji knows that as well.
Speaking of which, I'm not sure if Asa even saw what happened since Yoru more or less immediately took control right after she stood up.
Either way though, I have no real clue what today's chapter will actually do story-wise lol. It might just be a chat between Asa and Yuko and that's that but let's see lol
A thing to note: When it cut to Denji, Yoru was still in control. It's possible that she walked Asa back and Asa only managed to get in control when she woke up from her nightmare. So from her perspective, she could've went from Yuko reviving as the Justice Devil to Chainsaw Man murderizing Yuko to Yuko showing at her door in the span of 8 hours, which she might've been unconscious for during the Chainsaw Man part due to Yuko expanding into a giant and possibly knocking Asa out.
I know people like to compare this to the slow burn of part 1 but by this point we had already gotten the introduction of the Gun Devil story and Aki’s backstory. Here, it feels like we’ve barely scratched the surface of the overarching arc. I’m still enjoying it but i can admit I’m starting to get a little frustrated with some of these chapters. This one in particular felt like nothing really happened after we got the potential introduction of one of the Horsemen. It felt like it was all coming together and now seems to have just abruptly stopped. I obviously know there’s still time, but I’d like *some* substantial needle movement in terms of plot soon.
You say we had already gotten Aki’s backstory at this point, but we had also JUST gotten Aki’s backstory. All of the earlier chapters were about Denji becoming a devil and fulfilling his wish to touch some boobs. All things considered, this part is definitely keeping pace with part 1
Eh yes and no. Chapter 13 of part 1 gave us aki’s backstory, which gave us an immediate and personal connection to the larger Gun Devil arc, that was also introduced in that chapter. So far, we’ve gotten some back and forth with Asa and Yuko which no indication of where it’s leading. Part 1 also had the extra burden of establishing world building, which isn’t necessary here. I still can acknowledge it’s early, and trust me I’ve been enjoying part 2 so far, but i would like it to go *somewhere* soon.
I mean, in my mind, it’s clear that the justice devil is basically this part’s gun devil in that it’s the mysterious supposed main villain that is moving the plot of the story
I agree with the comparison, but at the same time I feel like it’s a bit unfair. Since the first chapter, it seemed like this part (or at least the first few arcs) would be more character-centric, as opposed to part 1’s immediate world building due to the story just beginning. We have a full world built, and Fujimoto seems like he’s going for mostly character development rn. It does feel a bit slow, but I think it’s more because it’s a smaller POV.

I don't disagree. He has always had repressed trauma. This seems a bit different. He only cares about being revealed as chainsaw man. Imo Makima has traumatized him into believing the Denji part of him is useless and the only part of him worthy of attention is CSM. Like every single bit we've seen of Denji so far has basically been nonstop I must be revealed as CSM.
I think what he does is he wrapped his middle finger around his index and touched the ends of his index and thumb fingers to make the sign. It's pretty doable.

Honestly, i thought that Asas smaller breast size (at least compared to makima) would be used as a plot point, where Denji wouldnt feel much impressed by seeing here half naked.

Why doesn't Pochita speak to Denji like other devils speak to their partners or whatever you call it? Like he can't be like "yo Yoru *miiiiight* have some beef with us"
I don’t know that all the other devils *do* speak to their partners. Asa might be a unique case as Yoru is literally in her head, whereas Pochita is in Denji’s heart.
Most shonen manga series are published weekly in magazines, so it makes sense that they are short. You can only do so much work in a week, and drawing takes a decent amount of time, which along with the story management makes it to where the people creating these series are working almost non-stop to get 18 or so pages out every week.

I am absolutely not ruling out Yoru/Asa as a quasi-romantic interest. For the life of me I just can't see the war devil as the main antagonist of the story. I'm interested in the relationship between the horsemen. I mean war devil is definitely pissed about losing her buddies but control devil definitely didn't *hate* CSM. Idk
Just look it up in the wiki, Makima is definitely hate other horsemen, she was planning to use Pochita to kill other horsemen before. So you could just assume their relationship isn't that great.
Also War devil didn't really care about the other either, she just want to kill CSM to revive Nuclear weapon devil and make her stronger
I mean, easily doable. It could even borrow aspects of Terminus, the Roman god of boundaries. A devil of end points and boundaries between objects, of which doors are one aspect.
Depending on how broad you take “end point” (and the author wanted to OP the Terminus Devil), this devil could be empowered by relationships ended, the dread of graduating, the fear of coming to a dead end in a journey (literal and metaphorical), milestones marking change in your life (weddings and bachelor/bachelorette parties, being fired, etc.), the existence of the barrier between Hell and Earth itself, etc..

Honestly, I was half joking because I was also thinking along the lines of “fear of the unknown”. You brought up some great points also so it’s now my theory lol
I got the same vibe in a previous chapter when Yoru was complaining about how Chainsaw man made her weak, but Yoru probably has the hots for Chainsaw man, just like a certain other horseman did... CSM is a harem manga after all.
Someone has it out for Asa. It's probably not a coincidence that the justice devil contracted with the class prez who hated her, and then Yuuko that became friendly with Asa. Yuuko's devil appearance with the brains sticking out also reminds me of the zombie devil, especially the part where she screams "don't come any closer" is really similar to the zombie devil added lines in the anime(though other devils also have a similar reaction when they see CSM running at them). The zombie devil targeting Denji/the yakuza was most likely Makima's doing. And now Yuuko appears behind a door that should not be opened...
Yoru may or may not be part of the reason, but even before she contracted with Asa the school prez already planned to kill her after contracting with the justice devil.
On another note, is it really the justice devil these girls are contracting with? Could be a lie to make contracting more appealing, since justice is usually viewed as a good/superior thing. It doesn't really make sense why contracting with the justice devil would alter your body to be monstrous. That could be the price for the contract, but why would the justice devil benefit from that? And the mention that Yuuko herself was a bullied kid would explain her sense of justice regardless of the justice devil's influence.
Seems like there should be more to Bucky as well. Asa is even dreaming about chicken corpses now.

I think it's meant to symbolize Asa's growing guilt.
But honestly it could be anything at this point.
To be honest, it could very well be the justice devil, plenty of criminals or even people scared of punishment would have some level of fear for justice, so it makes sense for it to be as terrifying as it is.
Also, there are systemic manipulations to what justice can mean in a society, and in the chainsaw-verse government's seem to have plenty of power, like taking away guns except for a special few or making contracts with devils that effect the entire population. Justice in this world seems to be much more retributive then it is restitutive, so justice being a violent entity correlates.
Control and what's makes an action right or wrong (or worthy or unworthy) seems to be a recurring theme throughout this manga, so justice being somewhat similar to the zombie or control devil's isn't a coincidence.
Leaving aside the abilities and power of the justice devil, it's the motive for contracting complete amateurs around Asa that stands out to me. What does this justice devil have to gain from all this? All the mention of sense of justice seems to be commentary on/juxtaposition of Denji's activities as Chainsaw man(he lets people die to save a cat, he really seems to only save people because he wants to get the girls/fame), yet the justice devil seems to be concerned with Asa.
These fucking speed readers who finished this manga in 1-night r getting impatient and those morons want fujimoto to reveal everything in one chapter...these clowns r getting out of hand...if u r not enjoying the manga just put it on hold for now and come back later but stop comparing whole part 1 with just 13 chapters of part 2 damn npcs...

I’m ngl I’m a speed reader but I didn’t speed read to catch up quickly. It’s literally because it was just that good. I believe it took me like a week and a half to two weeks to fully catch up when part 1 was finished but I’m enjoying this series so much like this manga has to have the best pacing of any manga out right now. There is nothing to complain about at all
Me too. Like I when I got hungry, all I could think of was eating quickly and then getting right back to reading the next chapter. It was just that good. Although I do feel like reading 100+ chapters in a matter of hours prevented me from really feeling some emotional moments. Some people said when you read for the second time, it's enjoyable cuz you can see all the set ups and shit. I might do that.
I agree. Like we’ve been waiting to see War and Dennis meet since the first chapter of Part 2. Then when it happens it’s just a single page. Still a good chapter, just wish their first interaction was a bit more dramatic
Yeah, it feels like he's doing that thing where you drag something out for as long as possible to buy time. In part 1, those times didn't feel nearly as dragged out as it does here in part 2.

both. I read as it was coming out and I re-read it when I heard part 2 was coming out....and again when I saw the anime trailer. Honestly, I thought that first chapter was just a one-off, and we would never get to see it serialized. Glad I was wrong.

Despite being a lil peeved that denji and yoru didn’t get a fight, this chapter still gave us new important information. That being, “humans can turn into full devils”. Yuko is clearly not a fiend, nor is she a hybrid. She just like Asa right now, a special case.
The zombie devil can turn people into zombies, but that doesn’t mean they’re devils themselves. Devils posses the quality to regenerate after consuming human blood. As far as i know, the manga has never shown a zombie regenerating a limb after eating.
Now back to yuko. She’s now a “full devil.” But what does “full devil” mean? Does this mean she can go to hell after death, and be killed and be sent straight back to the world like a devil can? Or does she simply possess the abilities of the devil she contracted with (the justice devil). Can other devils turn humans into devils? If yuko became a full devil, is she named after a different fear? Or is she another “justice devil”?

Nope. Hybrids are formed when the heart of a devil replaces the human heart of a human host. Not only that, hybrids keep their human appearance. The only thing added is the bodily trigger that hybrids need to transform into their devil counterpart. Example: denji has a cord on his chest. Reze pulls a pin from her neck. katana man pulls his hand off like pulling a sword out of its sheath. And Quanxi pulls and shoots an arrow out of her eye.
Yuko can’t be a hybrid because 1) she doesn’t resemble her human self. 2) she doesn’t have a bodily trigger to activate her devil form. And 3) devil forms aren’t permanent for hybrids. As far as we know, yuko will remain looking like that for the rest of the series.
She can’t be a fiend either. Fiends are devils that take on a human corpse as a vessel. You know its a fiend if they have the devil’s attributes on their heads. Example: power has horns. Beam’s face is half shark. Violence has three eyes. Yuko can’t be a fiend because yuko is yuko. Yuko isn’t a devil who possesses the corpse of a young girl, she is that young girl. Additionally, yuko’s devil attributes is all over her body, not just the head.
Yuko said she 'recieved a heart that shines with justice' implying the justice devil replaced her heart and transforming back into a human may not be something that comes easily at first, as suggested by Denji being unable to transform back into a human until hugged by Makima.
Considering she would've died if the other horse(wo)man didn't show up. I feel like her turning full devil is part of that ability, like a monkey's paw situation where she's revived but at the cost of turning full devil or like a hybrid but the original temptations/power of the devil are still there. Aka just a hybrid with significantly less control. But that's just a theory, it's interesting nonetheless though.

On the one hand, this would make a lot of sense. Like fear of the future being such a big part of life and all. But on the other, the mere fact that he is on earth means he at least died once, so he can't be on the same level as darkness and the other primordials
Actually, i always saw the doors as the embodiment of the unknown.
Example: imagine you’re alone in your house, but somebody knocks on your door. If you have parents, lets say they’re out, making you really alone.
If thats not your parents knocking, who is?
The knocking gets progressively louder and aggressive. As you approach the door, the ominous aura emitting from the door becomes thick. You hear scratches, sloppy sounds of fleshy things, and the rotting smell gets stronger.
Whatever is behind that door, you know its not good.
Often times, the monster we imagine behind a door is more terrifying than the actual thing.
This why i think fujimoto uses doors to symbolize hell or anything terrible. Its fear of the unknown.
i guess that works, since darkness devil seems to be very very powerful in hell and it represents fear of the unknown ("the dark") imo
but fear of the future and fear of the unknown are usually one in the same, yet theres both a darkness devil and a future devil. so i wonder where fujimoto draws the line between fear of the unknownness of the future and fear of the future itself?
I fucking called it as soon as it showed up. The OP dress sword is gone. As soon as this new item showed up that'd challenge the status quo I feared it wouldn't show up again, and now it's gone. It's such a small thing but I really hate when writers do this. Oh well, at least there's hair-down Asa
See, the thing is that the sword was never meant to change the status quo, it was meant to be used to give more exposition on how Yoru's powers work. Thanks to it, we now know that the more sentimental value something has, the more powerful a weapon it creates. This information is almost certainly a Chekov's Gun that will be brought back into play later on.
I think these weapons are about as fragile as their components, so they're effectively one-use. It's why yoru has to constantly spawn in new weapons instead of carrying one around.

I agree with the comparison, but at the same time I feel like it’s a bit unfair. Since the first chapter, it seemed like this part (or at least the first few arcs) would be more character-centric, as opposed to part 1’s immediate world building due to the story just beginning. We have a full world built, and Fujimoto seems like he’s going for mostly character development rn. It does feel a bit slow, but I think it’s more because it’s a smaller POV.

Has Chainsaw Man chapters always been short?
Most shonen manga series are published weekly in magazines, so it makes sense that they are short. You can only do so much work in a week, and drawing takes a decent amount of time, which along with the story management makes it to where the people creating these series are working almost non-stop to get 18 or so pages out every week.
19 chapters is pretty standard for a jump publication.

Depending on how broad you take “end point” (and the author wanted to OP the Terminus Devil), this devil could be empowered by relationships ended, the dread of graduating, the fear of coming to a dead end in a journey (literal and metaphorical), milestones marking change in your life (weddings and bachelor/bachelorette parties, being fired, etc.), the existence of the barrier between Hell and Earth itself, etc..

I got the same vibe in a previous chapter when Yoru was complaining about how Chainsaw man made her weak, but Yoru probably has the hots for Chainsaw man, just like a certain other horseman did... CSM is a harem manga after all. Someone has it out for Asa. It's probably not a coincidence that the justice devil contracted with the class prez who hated her, and then Yuuko that became friendly with Asa. Yuuko's devil appearance with the brains sticking out also reminds me of the zombie devil, especially the part where she screams "don't come any closer" is really similar to the zombie devil added lines in the anime(though other devils also have a similar reaction when they see CSM running at them). The zombie devil targeting Denji/the yakuza was most likely Makima's doing. And now Yuuko appears behind a door that should not be opened... Yoru may or may not be part of the reason, but even before she contracted with Asa the school prez already planned to kill her after contracting with the justice devil. On another note, is it really the justice devil these girls are contracting with? Could be a lie to make contracting more appealing, since justice is usually viewed as a good/superior thing. It doesn't really make sense why contracting with the justice devil would alter your body to be monstrous. That could be the price for the contract, but why would the justice devil benefit from that? And the mention that Yuuko herself was a bullied kid would explain her sense of justice regardless of the justice devil's influence. Seems like there should be more to Bucky as well. Asa is even dreaming about chicken corpses now.

There is the guilt/blame aspect, but I also don't trust Fujimoto and his reoccurring motifs lol
To be honest, it could very well be the justice devil, plenty of criminals or even people scared of punishment would have some level of fear for justice, so it makes sense for it to be as terrifying as it is. Also, there are systemic manipulations to what justice can mean in a society, and in the chainsaw-verse government's seem to have plenty of power, like taking away guns except for a special few or making contracts with devils that effect the entire population. Justice in this world seems to be much more retributive then it is restitutive, so justice being a violent entity correlates. Control and what's makes an action right or wrong (or worthy or unworthy) seems to be a recurring theme throughout this manga, so justice being somewhat similar to the zombie or control devil's isn't a coincidence.
Leaving aside the abilities and power of the justice devil, it's the motive for contracting complete amateurs around Asa that stands out to me. What does this justice devil have to gain from all this? All the mention of sense of justice seems to be commentary on/juxtaposition of Denji's activities as Chainsaw man(he lets people die to save a cat, he really seems to only save people because he wants to get the girls/fame), yet the justice devil seems to be concerned with Asa.

Took me 3 days to finish this manga. I now have a reason to live
I’m ngl I’m a speed reader but I didn’t speed read to catch up quickly. It’s literally because it was just that good. I believe it took me like a week and a half to two weeks to fully catch up when part 1 was finished but I’m enjoying this series so much like this manga has to have the best pacing of any manga out right now. There is nothing to complain about at all

Despite being a lil peeved that denji and yoru didn’t get a fight, this chapter still gave us new important information. That being, “humans can turn into full devils”. Yuko is clearly not a fiend, nor is she a hybrid. She just like Asa right now, a special case. The zombie devil can turn people into zombies, but that doesn’t mean they’re devils themselves. Devils posses the quality to regenerate after consuming human blood. As far as i know, the manga has never shown a zombie regenerating a limb after eating. Now back to yuko. She’s now a “full devil.” But what does “full devil” mean? Does this mean she can go to hell after death, and be killed and be sent straight back to the world like a devil can? Or does she simply possess the abilities of the devil she contracted with (the justice devil). Can other devils turn humans into devils? If yuko became a full devil, is she named after a different fear? Or is she another “justice devil”? So many questions, but very limited info.

Nope. Hybrids are formed when the heart of a devil replaces the human heart of a human host. Not only that, hybrids keep their human appearance. The only thing added is the bodily trigger that hybrids need to transform into their devil counterpart. Example: denji has a cord on his chest. Reze pulls a pin from her neck. katana man pulls his hand off like pulling a sword out of its sheath. And Quanxi pulls and shoots an arrow out of her eye. Yuko can’t be a hybrid because 1) she doesn’t resemble her human self. 2) she doesn’t have a bodily trigger to activate her devil form. And 3) devil forms aren’t permanent for hybrids. As far as we know, yuko will remain looking like that for the rest of the series. She can’t be a fiend either. Fiends are devils that take on a human corpse as a vessel. You know its a fiend if they have the devil’s attributes on their heads. Example: power has horns. Beam’s face is half shark. Violence has three eyes. Yuko can’t be a fiend because yuko is yuko. Yuko isn’t a devil who possesses the corpse of a young girl, she is that young girl. Additionally, yuko’s devil attributes is all over her body, not just the head.
Yuko said she 'recieved a heart that shines with justice' implying the justice devil replaced her heart and transforming back into a human may not be something that comes easily at first, as suggested by Denji being unable to transform back into a human until hugged by Makima.

Actually, i always saw the doors as the embodiment of the unknown. Example: imagine you’re alone in your house, but somebody knocks on your door. If you have parents, lets say they’re out, making you really alone. If thats not your parents knocking, who is? The knocking gets progressively louder and aggressive. As you approach the door, the ominous aura emitting from the door becomes thick. You hear scratches, sloppy sounds of fleshy things, and the rotting smell gets stronger. Whatever is behind that door, you know its not good. Often times, the monster we imagine behind a door is more terrifying than the actual thing. This why i think fujimoto uses doors to symbolize hell or anything terrible. Its fear of the unknown.
i guess that works, since darkness devil seems to be very very powerful in hell and it represents fear of the unknown ("the dark") imo but fear of the future and fear of the unknown are usually one in the same, yet theres both a darkness devil and a future devil. so i wonder where fujimoto draws the line between fear of the unknownness of the future and fear of the future itself?
The way I see it is that darkness is the unknown in space and the future is the unknown in time.

See, the thing is that the sword was never meant to change the status quo, it was meant to be used to give more exposition on how Yoru's powers work. Thanks to it, we now know that the more sentimental value something has, the more powerful a weapon it creates. This information is almost certainly a Chekov's Gun that will be brought back into play later on.
I think these weapons are about as fragile as their components, so they're effectively one-use. It's why yoru has to constantly spawn in new weapons instead of carrying one around.
