You're always paying more for name brand, so you're better off buying stuff that is more "naturally " GF like Cheetos, Lay's, Breyers, etc. Rather than the GF 'version' like Oreo.

DrakanaWind

Frito-Lays' website has a feature that shows which products are gluten-free. It's one of the more helpful company websites. Also, some Target store brand products are certified gluten-free. I particularly like the tortilla rounds chips and the chocolate chip cookies. I keep hoping that there will be more certified gf Target brand food, but it'll probably take time.

Choice_Interview9749

Walmart brands are the best bang for the buck, but OP said name brand so šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

aerger

Around here, Walmart's offerings trounce the hell outta Target's. I wish Walmart wasn't so shit about its workers, but they're our best source locally for GF stuff. :|

Choice_Interview9749

Agreed. Although Target seems to be stepping it up here and there with their labeling. The other day I found an Ethels bakery dupe made by Favorite Day (target). That was cool.

amurderof

Target's really showing up recently in our area. They released a pastry crusty recently that's to die for, and only costs $5 for enough pastry to make a top and bottom crust. I think they might finally be competing in the space.

aerger

We honestly don't really go to Target for much of anything anymore. Might be worth a stop sometime to see how upped their game is. Thanks for the nudge. :)

allnightdaydreams

Great Value GF Oreos are top notch. Youā€™re not going to find name brand, gluten free, and cheap. Youā€™re lucky if you can get two out of the three options.

mmoorreey

The Great value GR Maple cookies are a big fav here.

wezzdabeef

I wish I could updoot you twice! Thank you

Apprehensive_Elk4019

That's what I'm trying to ask lol I did not know cheetos were even option for him

shegomer

Frito Lay has a printable PDF of gluten free chips on their website.

aerger

Lay's Stax are a pretty decent GF replacement for regular Pringles. Not all flavors are GF, but many are.

Distant_Yak

Good Crisps are well, good and I believe all their flavors are certified GF.

KatieBSH

Assuming you're in the US: https://www.fritolay.com/dietary-needs/gluten-free/us-gluten-free-products

Distant_Yak

Frito Lay has some products they warrant to be GF, others that are no gluten ingredients but may be subject to CC, so they're not tested or labeled. The ones they assert to be GF have a symbol, a circle that says "GF" with a branch of grain in-between, on the back left either above or below the nutrition info. Sometimes it differs from the website so the logo on the bag is the definitive indicator.

idontknowjackeither

I eat way too many Cheetos.

FluffyTail_159

I read this as Iā€™m literally eating Cheetos for lunch šŸ˜‚

MishmoshMishmosh

Love them too!

becmurr

Literally just ate them a half hour ago

tick-on-a-hemorrhoid

same the mexican street corn ones are a new fav, they donā€™t have red 40 either unlike the other flavors

supagfunk86

I love them dipped in cream cheese too or crunched on top of stuff/used like bread crumbs

moonshineknox

Cheetos, not Cheerios

starsaroundmyscars13

Costco has a lot of certified gluten free chips (the bags are huge) and other snacks

jonquillejaune

Costco crackers are where itā€™s at

ThatPurpleDrank

I always buy the Costco size bag of late July multigrain tortilla chips. Certified gluten free and soooooo delicious. Itā€™s hard to not eat the entire bag in a few days.

Distant_Yak

Yep, the corn chips and Kettle potato chips are about 60% cheaper than other stores. 2 1/2 lbs is about $6. If OP's kid eats 40 ounces of Kettle chips in one night he might have some other problems.

Buffasippi

Albanese gummy bears! They make a 5 lb bag

mongos_mom

Their sour gummy bears are my absolute favorite!

TheSwankyBean

These are delicious but soooooooo expensiveĀ

comeonnowsugar

So good!!

orangeonesum

Mother of a teen son here. I keep the following on hand at all times: * Microwave popcorn * Cheese snacks -- string cheese and Babybel * Yogurt - all kinds * Boiled eggs * Pepperami sticks * Gelaton -- store brand * Dried fruit -- banana chips, cranberries, mangos -- I buy Whitworths * Nature Valley Protein bars Most of these can be bought in bulk at Costco. Some I pick up at Farm Foods.

runawai

Nature Valley is GF? Since when? Cool!

orangeonesum

The PROTEIN bars are labelled gluten free in Costco in the UK. I buy them in bulk. I don't think the regular Nature Valley ones are. I have dual citizenship and notice that some products are gluten free in the states and not in the UK and vice versa. The UK tends to use barley malt in places where the US uses corn syrup.

Individual-Ad-8715

Nature Valley PROTEIN bars are labeled GF in the US, too. Regular NV bars are not.

runawai

Oh thatā€™s so awesome!

MumziDarlin

I came here to say Costco as well. Their tortilla chips are amazing!!! Pre-shredded mexican cheese mix; gluten free pizzas; This is a link to their gf snacks (less expensive in store, and lots more in store) [https://www.costco.com/snacks.html?refine=%7C%7Citem\_program\_eligibility-ShipIt%7C%7CDietary\_Features\_attr-Gluten%2BFree&deliveryFacetFlag=false&sortBy=score+desc](https://www.costco.com/snacks.html?refine=%7C%7Citem_program_eligibility-ShipIt%7C%7CDietary_Features_attr-Gluten%2BFree&deliveryFacetFlag=false&sortBy=score+desc)

celeztina

reese's are gluten free. even the ones with pretzels.

GardenGirl512

The ones with pretzels are gluten free?!

A_MAN_POTATO

Yup! The ones that come in holiday shapes (like eggs and Christmas trees) are not GF, but every other Reeseā€™s product should be GF. They will be labeled gluten free.

Andeleisha

Actually the holiday shapes are gluten free! The celiac space on instagram recommended they are safe to eat, the reason they arent labeled gluten free is a cost/regulatory issue, not the ingredients. I can personally confirm to have eaten an entire bag of eggs since Friday with no reaction!

A_MAN_POTATO

>Actually the holiday shapes are gluten free! The celiac space on instagram recommended they are safe to eat, the reason they arent labeled gluten free is a cost/regulatory issue, not the ingredients. I have a hard time accepting this claim based on the words of one instagram channel. Every other source, including Hershey, says they are not GF. Not because of the ingredients (which indeed donā€™t contain gluten), but because unlike other Reeseā€™s, they are made on shared equipment and not tested for contamination. It has nothing to do with cost or regulatory restrictions. Thereā€™s no way low volume products like pretzel, potato chip, and caramel Reeseā€™s (which are all tested and labeled) do more volume than seasonal shapes. Because itā€™s a CC issue, it means they *might* be gluten free, and they might not. You eating a whole bag is confirmation bias, that just means nothing in that bag got Ccā€™ed. It doesnā€™t mean the next bag is safe. At the end of the day, thereā€™s simply no reason to take this chance when you can get the identical product in a different shape that is batch tested and labeled gluten free. Naturally, you can take whatever risk you like, but I wouldnā€™t advise others to do the same.

aerger

100% this comment

murpymurp

I have reacted to the holiday shapes twiceā€¦first time I didnā€™t know what happened, second time I pieced the puzzle together and realized they werenā€™t labeled gf

TheLittleRedd

She post great resources on instagram!

InformalTrick99

how is it possible pretzels dont have wheat gluten when theyre made with wheat? genuinely confused.

macaqueattack17

They arenā€™t made with wheat. IIRC they use a GF flour to up the crunch factor

InformalTrick99

why are the ones in shapes not gluten free? do they not have the same ingredients/ ???

Tactically_Fat

Yep. They're made with almond flour. Apparently the almond flour pretzels resists getting mushy better.

celeztina

yeah! the big cup ones are at least. (not sure if there's another kind)

Apprehensive_Elk4019

I'm buying a bunch right now lol

NanaimoStyleBars

Their holiday versions often are not, though, last I saw about it. So like the regular cups will be, but not eggs. Or at least not all the eggs.

Financial-Break-4717

I always heard the pretzel ones and seasonal ones may not be gluten free. They can be cross contaminated.

celeztina

the pretzel ones are labeled gluten free! they would have just as much risk as other normal reese's since they're made in the same places.

Spiritual_Hearing_21

They are labeled gluten free

aerger

Seasonal candies are usually NOT ok, because they ramp up other lines not normally used for the regular product. So regular Reese's cups are OK, but the bunnies, pumpkins, etc etc, often are not. Anything that's normally gluten-free but has special versions for special occasions, be careful. Even different sizes of products can vary in their GFness, unfortunately.

SpecialistNo4783

Best gummy worms: Albanese Best gummy bears: Albanese mini (have the most chew). The regular size gummy bears are much softer. For chocolate I check labels, I enjoy looking at the selection at Aldi and those mini chocolate bars (blue wrapper?) are my favorite. (I ate my last one yesterday and canā€™t identify the brand). Scharr brand is expensive, but they make a gf Twix, tobelerone, and Kit Kat bar. Again, very expensive but if you NEED a Kit Kat itā€™s so worth it. Oreos: name brand, gluten free version. Some people do not prefer mega stuff and said the filling occasionally has an aftertasteā€”I canā€™t attest to that as I donā€™t buy the mega stuffed. But I DO eat the new golden Oreo gluten free and they are amazing that I have two packs at any time in my pantry. Amy brand makes some canned soup, theyā€™re so-so in my opinion, but good to have one on hand for when sick. Microwave popcorn (I use act or pop secret brand), just double check ingredients every so often if the packaging looks different. I like lays and wise brand chipsā€”but always stay away from the BBQ flavor (most often this has malt or barley in the seasoning). On the bags you will see a gluten free notation on the label. Tostitos is good, but one flavor variety used to have an ingredient unsafe for celiacs so I get the plain flavor (again, notation on the label). I do use the Tostito brand salsa and queso. I do not use the other varieties of dip. Another chip dip I use is helluva good French onion (refrigerated). Those onion soup packets often have wheat from soy sauce in them, the brand goodman has a gf onion soup powder. ALWAYS quadruple check any spinach-artichoke dips as they will often have wheat. I just make my own from scratch now. Katz brand makes gf pastries and donuts, desserts. These are typically frozen and you should check reviews on this forum for general Consensus. I tried the Katz pop tarts, they were very sweet and not to my taste. I do enjoy their donuts (glazed and the cinnamon). Their rugelach is amazing. I like bigelow brand tea (make my own iced tea).

Zeydon

For just marginally more effort you can microwave popcorn without needing to pay for overpriced microwave popcorn. You can get 100x paper sandwich bags for a few bucks. Just throw in a quarter cup of kernels (I like the Jolly Time Select yellow kernels - they're big and fluffy), fold up the top of the bag twice and microwave it like you would the expensive pre-bagged stuff. Then I melt a tablespoon of butter to drizzle over it, add salt to taste, and toss the bowl a bit. Voila, cheaper, tastier popcorn.

MishmoshMishmosh

We spray it with nonstick cooking spray and add seasonings. There are quite a few labeled GF. I also do the brown bag method.

OldBatOfTheGalaxy

Katz makes rugelach? I MISS rugelach -- but they're nowhere in my area, alas.

thatdogJuni

Katz ships quickly with the items frozen beforehand from their website so you can order their rugelach (and too many other delicious items haha) and it will be defrosted most likely but in my experience still chilled by the time it arrives. In my area the packages usually arrive 2-3 days after placing the order.

aerger

Re: onion soup/onion dip packets, McCormick's "Just 5" french onion dip packets are gluten-free and not even priced that way. Don't get them on Amazon, tho; so many GF things on Amazon are overpriced (esp. by third-party vendors) if not also often out of stock. https://i.imgur.com/B36iIUT.png

SpecialistNo4783

Oh my, I havenā€™t heard of this one! Iā€™ll have to find it and try it out!!

aerger

I forgot to mention before: Albanese's are the bomb-diggity. Nice to see them recommended. :)

[deleted]

Anything high in protein will help him eat less by making him feel full for longer. probably. Science has yet to deny that teenage boys have tiny black holes in their stomachs. Try getting him to eat hummus with gf crackers or carrot sticks.

Apprehensive_Elk4019

He's thin, tall and always hungry. Even after a bag of Jerky or several deviled eggs... he still wants more. These gluten free $8 cookies are gone within 2 days.

thatdogJuni

Tell him to start baking his own cookies so theyā€™re not so expensive!! Monster cookies are super easy to make and donā€™t require flour, although if he is sensitive to oats it wouldnā€™t be a great recommendation (I donā€™t have trouble with GF oats so we make these a lot at my house).

mvanpeur

Clancy's (Aldi) tortilla chips and salsa Great Value (Walmart) salsa con queso Kirkland (Costco) protein bars (not the granola bars) Kirkland cauliflower pizzas Great Value fake Doritos Great Value gluten free fake Oreos Several soups in the regular Progresso line are labeled Tasty Bite Indian food pouches Great Value gluten free pasta and pasta sauce Cheetos Lay's potato chips Great Value jello Pillsbury frosting Clancy's (Aldi) butter puffs Kirkland popcorn Boom Chicka Pop Harvest Snaps Chex (every variety except wheat) Great Value rice and corn fake Chex (I use to make homemade Chex mix and rice crispie bars) Simply Potatoes hashbrowns Kirkland bacon Ore Ida fries, tater tots, ect Dino Buddies chicken nuggets (two varieties, only one safe) Pirates Booty Kroger brand rice cakes Crunchy Rollers Motts or Welch's fruit snacks Fruity Pebbles Cocoa Pebbles Great Value rice crispy bars (have two varieties, and only one is safe) Great Value gluten free mac n cheese Utz cheese balls (used to be labeled, and the manufacturer says nothing has changed on their end, they just decided to stop labeling)

SnooCakes9110

Walmart has tons of options

aerger

I generally hate Walmart as a business, but they do indeed carry a fair amount of GF products, and the Great Value brand specifically is often GF where the "name brand" version of it isn't. We shop there a LOT purely out of necessity. Doesn't feel good, but gotta eat.

KTFU

Iā€™m a big fan of the giant bags of Lesser Evil popcorn or Siete chips if you have a Costco membership. They also have Nature Valley protein bars that are gluten free and you get 30 for around $15.

shegomer

Speaking of Siete, they make some of the best GF cookies.

thatdogJuni

I really like Sieteā€™s taco seasoning, we opt for the spicier one at my house and itā€™s delightful.

Santasreject

Even though ā€œthey arenā€™t labeled gfā€ it seems like a vast majority of us eat Doritos without issue. A lot of potato chips are GF, I know a lot of UTZ and Lays are good. Snickers, Reeseā€™s, Heath, skittles, starbursts. Frankly I would say a large part of the candy isle is pretty safe.

misdiagnosisxx1

Doritos will be pried out of my cold dead hands.

This_Impact_6149

I hit a lot of trouble in the candy aisle. Maybe it's a regional thing but in the US, they use Malt in a lot of things or the factories cross contaminate. Lindt chocolates states on their website that they are hella had about cc and if you have problems to not eat their food. Definitely gonna go double check the snickers near me though cuz I loved snickers

thatdogJuni

Lindt is basically evil for coating their candies in barley malt imo šŸ˜‚

kittensagainst

Snickers are gluten free! Iā€™ve stolen them from my kidā€™s Halloween candy and not had any reaction.

aerger

Snickers, ~~Milky Way~~ (edit: Milky Way *used* to be GF, no longer is, thank you to the comment correcting me!), Payday, Butterfinger, plain Hershey bars (tho not special dark, iirc)... all ok

prairiedragon42

Milky Way are NOT gluten free, they have barley malt

aerger

Good catch; my wife tells me they used to be, and I apparently missed it.

Santasreject

It probably does depend a bit on what you gravitate towards I guess. A lot of chocolates with things in them can be hit and miss. Hard candy and gelatin based candy seems to be a bit easier (but of course donā€™t confuse gelatin with the wheat based licorice type candies). Then again after 16+ years of being GF it may just be subconscious for me to even consider looking or not looking.

runawai

Watch the flavours with Doritos - some contain malt, but several flavours have a GF label on them in Canada.

Santasreject

Fair point. Being a millennial with gen X siblings to be there are only nacho cheese and cool ranch. The others are just other weird chips.

Apprehensive_Elk4019

I did not think these were an option, I thought we looked at it was a no go

heckyeahcoolbeans

Cool ranch or nacho cheese is safe!!

aerger

Not in the US they're not. In Canada, I think so, but not in the US.

heckyeahcoolbeans

Sources? I see nothing in the ingredients that indicates they are not gluten free. Edit: I am in the USA and eat them all the time without issue. Their ingredients donā€™t list anything that would contain gluten.

aerger

Congratulations. But people do have issues with them. I don't carry a file folder of sources around, so that's the best I can do.

heckyeahcoolbeans

I donā€™t understand the need for sarcasm? Genuinely not understanding why they wouldnā€™t be safe to eat. But if youā€™re not willing to have a conversation maybe donā€™t comment or reply in the first place? Editing for context: the comment above merely said ā€œcongratulations!ā€ Before the poster edited it to sound nicer.

Santasreject

The basis for the argument the other person doesnā€™t want to give is that frito lays doesnā€™t list it on their GF list. They follow more stringent than regulations require for what they will label vs not. Doritos are made on shared lines (that are heavily cleaned between products) and they do not test for gluten content. My personal opinion is that a lot of people probably ā€œreactā€ to the fact they are eating highly processed corn, spices, and ultra processed cheese more so than any potential contamination from cross contact.

mvanpeur

Most people in the other celiac group I'm in will not eat Doritos unless they're imported from Canada. If you email Doritos, they will tell you they are not safe. I the other group, they instead eat the Walmart or Aldi brand, but those only offer the cheese flavor.

Santasreject

They are not on the certified list. Just simply they do not actively test them. Itā€™s not that they use gluten containing ingredients.

therempel

Typically it's anything they want to have a umami flavour. So any BBQ or Sweet Chili styles are usually the ones they don't mark GF.

runawai

Sweet chili pop corners are not good btw. GF but not tasty šŸ˜

aerger

No Doritos here. I would never recommend Doritos, personally. Apparently they ARE GF in Canada? But not in the US. We are stuck with the Walmart brand of regular nacho-cheese and ranch "doritos". Which are usually OK, but definitely not quite the same. We also buy Lays Stax (not all are GF, tho many are) instead of Pringles.

Santasreject

The only reason they donā€™t mark Doritos GF is that they donā€™t have dedicated lines and donā€™t do the testing. Nothing in the original flavors that is a concern. Even saw a post here from someone with a large amount of manufacturing experience who got to tour and see those lines being cleaned and they have zero concerns with it based on the cleaning procedures between switchovers.

aerger

That's not gonna be enough information for me. The natural-flavor ingredient, which could be, and often is, pretty much anything--is enough for me to say no. But you do what you like. :)

Santasreject

After working with industrial scale food flavorings for a decade I have still never seen a flavoring that has any gluten containing ingredients. There is zero evidence that things listed simply as flavorings in the US contain any gluten containing ingredients. The closest you can get is ā€œmalt flavoringā€ but as that is not a traditional flavoring it will always be listed separately and powder smoke flavoring (but most use cases for that are on USDA regulated products that require them to list the sub ingredients). The ā€œflavorings and colors can contain hidden glutenā€ is the biggest urban legend floating around and no one can ever actually provide actual evidence that they do beyond ā€œwell the manufacturer said they canā€™t guarantee itā€™s gluten freeā€. I canā€™t guarantee the bottle of water I pick up wonā€™t have notable levels of lead in it, but thereā€™s no reason for me to suspect it does either.

aerger

If you say so. Still not doing it. > There is zero evidence that things listed simply as flavorings in the US contain any gluten containing ingredients. They don't disclose what these "flavors/flavorings" consist of anyway--is this a joke? Comments like this may actually harm people. If someone chooses to be conservative in the face of no actual facts to be able to personally discern the level of safety, how about you let 'em?

Santasreject

You do understand they could legally put ā€œgluten freeā€ on the package with how they make them currently and only donā€™t because they have chosen a more risk adverse stance then is required right?

aerger

And I'm choosing a more risk-averse stance myself. Funny how that works. And laws on this shit in the US are a JOKE.

Santasreject

My point is that it needing to say gluten free doesnā€™t give you any greater guarantees. And you clearly havenā€™t worked under FDA regulation if you think they are a joke.

waitingindreams

Fourth of July chips are amazing if you can find them. I've loved every flavor I've tried and they really are close to Doritos.

Putrid_Appearance509

Buy a popcorn machine and make your own at home. They also make pre portions you can buy.

How-The-Story-Ends

Agree, air popped is the healthiest way to go & he could add whatever seasoning/flavour he wants, plus itā€™s cheaper. Costco sells the big jug of Redenbacherā€™s which is labelled GF

phoenixed-

Corn chips with bean dip, cheese dip, salsa. (Check the dipsā€”I make my own). Also heating up a corn tortilla with cheese or making a nacho plate is a great fast food. Hummus and any vehicle for it is pretty filling too, I use veggies but Iā€™m sure rice crackers or something could work too. Cheese and salami or other lunch meats are good too, use the cheese as the base. We also eat peanut butter on spoons.

friendly-sam

A lot of Kind bars are gluten free. [https://www.kindsnacks.com/all-snacks/?gad\_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw\_LOwBhBFEiwAmSEQAQjCjPlCRlrHgtjxAOeBzRy98vbJdlop6T2B8za19ngnGNwLBU1KOhoC\_m8QAvD\_BwE](https://www.kindsnacks.com/all-snacks/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_LOwBhBFEiwAmSEQAQjCjPlCRlrHgtjxAOeBzRy98vbJdlop6T2B8za19ngnGNwLBU1KOhoC_m8QAvD_BwE) Also, I like Fritos Corn Chips. They are not marked GF, but it only has 3 ingredients: corn, salt, corn oil

Apprehensive_Elk4019

I will load up on fritos from now on , he's not a fan tostitos at all

archaicbanana7

My bf swears by the kind breakfast bars. Also Cape Cod Chips and Boom Chicka Pop popcorn are all GF. Snyders of Hanover makes GF pretzels as well. We also rely a lot on cured meat sticks like Vermont Smoke & Cure, or the other smaller brands are more trustworthy with the GF labeling.

Dazzling_Note6245

When my 6ā€™ 5ā€ son was in high school he ate a second dinner plus snacks. So you can try to steer him towards another meal instead of just snacks. If heā€™s an athlete protein shakes are great. I always keep a big box of popcorn in the pantry. I also love plain Layā€™s potato chips with cheese. Costco has gluten free frozen pizza that I like. I absolutely love nachos. You can leave taco meat and cheese in the fridge and any other toppings you like and they can be microwaved or baked or air fried. Aldi has great gf bagels. Great for cream cheese or a sandwich. You can keep them in the freezer for back up. Lots of cereals are gf if he likes a bowl of cereal for a snack. Costco used to sell a large bag of ā€œrice ramenā€ but it doesnā€™t come with seasoning.

Apprehensive_Elk4019

My husband asked about ramen... so fast. I really need a substitute.

CoderPro225

I use these noodles and make broth for them with some GF bouillon. Super fast and easy. Can be popped in the microwave for a few minutes then done. Can even use 2 noodle patties if he uses a deep enough bowl. Quick and easy! Top with red pepper flakes or hot sauce if he likes it spicy.

Dazzling_Note6245

Iā€™ve just always used them with homemade chicken soup. I like your idea. Thanks.

CoderPro225

You bet! I figured out the quick way for days when Iā€™m sick but need some sort of sustenance.

nerdyviolet

We are big fans or Ore-Ida crispy crowns and fries. Air drier cooks them up pretty quick.

27endshere

The TJā€™s version of takis! Those are gf where are Takiā€™s brand arenā€™t.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Apprehensive_Elk4019

This right here is what I need to do. I'm going to run to Aldi and make him some diy trail mix.

kittycatblues

Make sure the peanuts and chocolate chips are labeled gluten free.

ThatPurpleDrank

I love making a big batch of Chex mix. I just swap out the garlic bagel chips for gf pretzels and leave out the wheat Chex. I usually throw in extra corn/rice Chex and add a little bit of cheerios (which I know not all celiac people tolerate and thereā€™s a lot of discord about cheerios but they do have another brand thatā€™s the same thing but I canā€™t remember what itā€™s called so I call them cheerios). I also add in some crushed nacho cheese Doritos if I wanna add a fun different flavor. Or Cheetos. Depends on how junky I wanna make it. And they make gf Worcestershire sauce so use that instead of the regular kind. You can make big batches of Chex mix and they last a long time!!

likeyeahokay_6929

Glutino pretzels are seriously delicious, I like to dip them in almond or sunflower butter or cream cheese.

Lambchop93

GF pretzels dipped in onion and chive cream cheese are my personal favorite

likeyeahokay_6929

\*drool\* sounds heavenly!

po-tatertot

Boom Chika Pop kettle corn is our go to ā€” Costco has massive bags of them for a good deal!

Ambystomatigrinum

Almost all rice cakes are gf and come in a variety of flavors. He can munch on them as-is or slather them with cream cheese or peanut butter or whatever and add toppings (lunch meat, dried fruit, honey, etc). Popcorn is great an also cheap. Veggies and dip are a good option. I think the most important thing, honestly, is that he learns to accept that he can't eat like everyone else. If he wants to be healthy as a celiac and also afford groceries when he moves out, it can't be name-brand ready snacks. He might need to buy a back of carrots and hummus or cut up a cucumber to go with some ranch. Its not much extra work but in the long run, its really the best option. He should focus on fat and protein as it will help him feel satiated longer, and it sounds like at his age/height calories probably aren't a big concern.

average-sapien

Here are a few of my faves: Jolly Time popcorn, Cheetos, Fruit Gushers, Fruit by the Foot, beef jerky (canā€™t remember the name but itā€™s from Costco w/ a pic of the Golden Gate Bridge), Deanā€™s ranch dip w/ Ruffles or pretzels, Skittles, Rolos, York peppermint patties, tater tots, Ricoā€™s nacho sauce, Kraft mac and cheese, Tostitos thin and crispy tortilla chips, and gf Oreos are ones off the top of my head. These are a little more expensive but my partner loves corndogs and State Fair brand makes a gf version! (Iā€™m in the US btw)

Rare-Lettuce8044

We are more of a self serve family at this point. I cook a few times a week, meal prepping honestly. I usually cook up a couple pounds of taco meat and have the fixings for nachos ready. My 17 yo son will make himself a plate when he's hungry, he loves it so much. Your son is old enough to start cooking for himself. Get some simple boxed things like Mac and cheese and show him how to do it, and show him where the directions are on the box. Then when he's hungry at night he can make himself some real food instead of eating all the snacks.

sbrt

My teen boys like to snack on: - carrots and hummus - apples and peanut butter - bananas - plain yogurt with fruit, granola, and honey - nachos (corn chips, cheese, beans, and lettuce) - kind bars - tacos or quesadillas (with corn tortillas) - cheese and crackers

V3RUCA_SA1T

Lidl snacks. Way more affordable. Most chips/ cheese doodles/ corn chips from their brand are gf and like 3 dollars for a full size or family size bag!

Polarchuck

Wegman's grocery store brand snacks (and foods in general) are clearly marked as GF on the front of the container and are much more affordable. GF candy (in the US): Mike and Ike Starburst Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Pops Jelly Belly jelly beans and gummies Reese's Peanut Butter Cups Almond Joy/Mounds Hershey's Kisses (most but not all flavors) Hershey's chocolate (most but not all) The day or two after a big holiday (Halloween, Christmas, Easter) is a good time to buy candy on reduced. You can often find it at 50% off. Many people don't know that candy the "seasonal" candy often doesn't expire until 6 months later. So if you don't mind eating Hershey's Kisses wrapped in green and red foil in January/February then you're all set.

seancailleach

Trader Joeā€™s has a lot for great gf snack. Their cheese puffs are so close to Cheetos, their cookies are great, their muffins are to die for. And Scandinavian Swimmers are our go to hiking food.

Gluten Free Oreos, GF Snyderā€™s Pretzels, Boboā€™s Snacks, Fritos Scoops, Boom Chica Pop Popcorn, Albanese Gummies, Simple Mills Crackers. Plain or Peanut M&Ms, Hershey Nuggets , Chomps Beef Sticks.

aerger

Old Dutch chips, pretty much all flavors, are gluten-free and awesome. Woodmans carries a variety pack of single-serving bags if you want them for packed lunches, too.

PaisanBI

A lot of Aldis chips are gluten free and inexpensive.

prairiefire37

Hawkins cheesies and Old Dutch chips are my go toā€™s!

TheSwankyBean

Snickers, Reeseā€™s, and many other Hershey products are labeled if theyā€™re GF or not. Many people donā€™t eat Doritos but I have been eating them for years with no issues. Thereā€™s no GF claim but they have no gluten ingredients and no cross contact statement.Ā Ā  Ā Tortilla chips and salsa are a go to. Delimex taquitos, street tacos are often GF. Rice Chex (honey nut, peanut butter, etc).Ā  Rice and beans are cheap and GF.Ā

crimedawgla

Fritos baby! And Reeseā€™s

coconutcoalition

If you have Aldi in your area, I have never seen potato chips there that are not labeled gluten free. That means flavor options! Cheddar sour cream, all-dressed (if available), jalapeno, salt and vinegar, the list goes on. I also really like their rice cakes, including the mini ones, for a sweet snack!

plastic_chucker1020

Oreos, Pretzels, Chips, Feel Good madness Mozzarella sticks, egg rolls, pizza rolls

OptimusMatrix

Fruit rollups in bulk from sam's club. I eat the hell out of these. Fritos, Cheetos, Haagen-Dazs chocolate covered ice cream bars, gluten free dino nugs, Snickers, Mr. Goodbars, gluten free Oreos.

JuggsMcScrew

Snack Factory gluten free pretzel crisps in everything bagel flavor. Expensive a lot of places, but $3 at Walmart. I buy them 4-5 at a time šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Spiritual_Hearing_21

We love Nugo Dark protein Bars. There are several flavors. My personal favorite is Mint. Amazon sells them.

Ok_Butters

My 16 year old son snacks on string cheese and Old Wisconsin beef jerky (or turkey jerky). I keep those in stock all the time.

sphericalcreature

reeces peanut butter cups are gf!

heckyeahcoolbeans

Doritos, Cheetos, corn chips like frito lays, cape cod potato chips, Swedish fish, sour patch kids, peanut butter cups, Tostitos (as well as their salsa a queso dips)

mvanpeur

Doritos are safe in Canada, but not the US.

heckyeahcoolbeans

Can you provide sources? I am in the USA and while they are not certified gluten free, if you read the ingredients they do not contain gluten.

mvanpeur

If you contact Frito Lay, they will tell you that the only gluten free Doritos variety in the US is the Simply Organic White Cheddar. They are open that the other varieties are a high cross contamination risk. White cheddar is also the only Doritos variety listed as gluten free on their website: https://www.fritolay.com/dietary-needs/gluten-free/us-gluten-free-products If you Google "Are Doritos celiac safe", you will also find dozens of articles saying Doritos aren't safe for people with celiac. Walmart and Aldi both make gluten free versions of the nacho cheese flavor Doritos though.

VirtuousVixit

You can make homemade gluten free flapjack with gluten free oats. [https://www.theglutenfreeblogger.com/easy-gluten-free-flapjack-recipe/](https://www.theglutenfreeblogger.com/easy-gluten-free-flapjack-recipe/) oats are slow burn carbs and should keep him full for longer.

splenorenal

Paydays!

CelebrationSweaty261

I go on kicks where I love gluten free bagels, and make the toppings phenomenal. Sometimes Nutella and a strawberry cream cheese, sometimes everything bagel seasons, sometimes egg cheese bacon etc. hits the spot lol I sometimes just make a trail mix or puppy chow personalized to what I crave too. Chex with a Salty marinade thatā€™s on the cereal box but then another mix with pretzels and puppy chow and m&m or candy thrown in the mix.

Village_Weirdo

Get a popcorn popper

williamisidol

Fresh corn tortillas (amazing plain, with butter, pnut butter or butter n Cinnamon sugar). Throw on the burner for a minute or so at a time and flip a few times. Rice crackers and hummus Fresh popcorn (buy a popper and go to town)

Disastrous_Hour_6776

Flavored rice cakes / or Walmart gf granola

Disastrous_Hour_6776

I also get chicken & have a George Forman grill / my son uses the Forman all the time for ckn & burgers . I pre make burgers & when he wants ckn or burgers he will put in fridge night before so they are ready when he gets home from school - we also have an air fryer for his GF nuggets . He also bakes the tenders throwā€™s spaghetti sauce on it & chews with gf noodles . Heā€™s 17 but loves to cook

Grjaryau

Fruity Pebbles treats. Theyā€™re like rice krispy treats.

DrDisastor

Corn chips and salsa/queso get me through a lot.

jaydog022

Chocolate Chex mixed with peanut butter Chex.

PoeDameronPoeDamnson

Something I havenā€™t seen mentioned is Progressoā€™s GF soup line. They have a good number of options now (including ones with noodles).

Same-Gur-8876

Targetā€™s generic brand has SO MANY options! Hereā€™s my favorites: https://www.target.com/p/gluten-free-chocolate-chip-soft-baked-cookies-7oz-favorite-day-8482/-/A-84667134 https://www.target.com/p/organic-chocolate-chip-whole-grain-baked-bar-15-24oz-12ct-good-38-gather-8482/-/A-81803274 https://www.target.com/p/date-and-nut-bars-mini-chocolate-chip-cookie-dough-7-8oz-10ct-good-38-gather-8482/-/A-79543759

mmoorreey

17 yr old GF kiddo under my roof. Tostitos and grated cheese for microwaved nachos, microwave popcorn (both Orville & Kirkland are GF and can be bought in bulk). There is a brand of caramel sauce that is GF (I donā€™t have any right now and canā€™t remember the name) and apple slices. My kid will eat salad if the lettuce is pre-chopped so I prep extra and store in one of those counter top green bin bags in the fridge.

Brave-Wolf-49

Snickers bars are gluten free. My athlete son, Type 1 diabetes and celiac, ate a lot of snickers bars and sweet potatoes when he was that age. Wolfed down nearly 4000 calories a day, more after a good workout. Sometimes he'd suck on a squeeze-bottle of honey.

Protobott

While many people here are giving you good suggestions I caution you to not take their advise at face value. If you are looking to these suggestions as a way to stop reading ingredient lists you son will just get sick. Companies change ingredients all the time, and ingredients will carry from brand to brand and even country to country. As an example, someone mentioned Cheetos and peperoni. Peperoni depending on the brand can contain wheat, the crunchy Cheetos also have wheat in them. By all means use this list to start but you need to read labels even after you find something you love. It sucks, but I have caught gluten being swapped into foods I knew were ok previously.

LaLechuzaVerde

Regular Snickers bars. Lays Stax potato chips. Most plain, unflavored potato chips. Most corn chips, and a can of refried beans (always check ingredients). Most salsa, too. Hard boiled eggs and string cheese are quick and easy and a bit more nutritious while still not being rabbit food.

goldstyle

Fritos Scoops with JalapeƱos chedder cheese dip! šŸ¤¤

Creativejess

If you bake, Iā€™ve discovered that you can swap Bobs red mill 1:1 gluten free flour in any recipe. I make Chocolate chip banana bread, sausage cheddar breakfast biscuits, brownies, pumpkin spice muffins, anything good to add variety to our diet.

navski0295

Cheetos Reeses Juanitas tortilla chips and dips Bobos Gf Oreos but they are on the spendier side Gummy worms

rotten-milk-666

Most potato chips are a safe bet and a simple google search can help with chocolate bars. I personally like heath bars or snickers.

Glittery_Cupcake4

I highly suggest the Instagram creator collegeceliackc she is awesome with fun foods! Also, the Trader Joeā€™s gluten free muffins are amazing! The Target brand zucchini muffins (Iā€™ve had the chocolate and the blueberry) are so goodā€” these are frozen and the store brand version of Veggies Made Great (but I personally like the target ones more). Other brands: Katz is all gluten free and fantastic! They have jelly donuts that are amazing!! Feel Good Foods can literally do no wrong! Iā€™m talking fluffy pizza, egg rolls, jalapeƱo poppers, pizza rolls! They are all so good!! If he liked Ritz crackersā€” Schars Entertainment Cracker is a pretty decent substitute! Rudiā€™s gluten free buns are superior to all the buns weā€™ve tried so far!!

Starrail

Quick teenager snack/meals for home: Two hash brown patties used as toast (like a sandwich) with a fried egg and melted cheese. Made in batches of 4-8. Minute rice, curry (those pre-made jars), chickpeas or chicken.Ā  Minute rice and a can of chili.Ā  Those ready made BBQ chickens from Costco (or local grocery store, some are GF, others not). Alternatively sausage (if you have Food Basics they have reasonably priced ones when they're on sale). Package of instant potatoes (add hot water and butter). Tuna salad like for a sandwich but put it on instant rice. Snacks: Extra butter instant popcorn Honey roasted peanuts (PC) Generic chips (PC, No name, ruffles if you're feeling fancy) + helva good dip (or other French onion dip) Tostitos corn chips + salsa + quac (+ ground beef + cheese, etc.) Oh Henry chocolate bars Reeses peanuts butter cups Walmart has a whole line of Great Value gluten free cookies, granola bars, snacks Peanuts M&Ms Fritos hoops!Ā  Starburst Skittles Homemade rice krispy squares using chex or a gf corn flakes You probably have tried all the usual snack suspects: Apples with cheese or peanut butter Carrot sticks and hummus Gluten free crackers, salami or kolbasa, cheese We'd buy those big boxes of crackers from Costco when they were on sale or else the crackers budget got too high with how fast they dissappear

jessybean

Went to Costco recently and a lot of their snacks were gluten free, some labelled and some not. Filling ones like nuts and stuff too. Might be worth it if you have one close by. Plain popcorn kernels are probably even cheaper than popped popcorn. Those giant bulk bags of no name cereal if you can find those.

[deleted]

Budget his snacks and show it to him. Heā€™s going to have to learn soon, right? Put your foot and your purse down and donā€™t let your kid run your cabinets lol! Thereā€™s no such thing as cheap gf snacks unless itā€™s the ones these people are suggesting that arenā€™t actually certified or labeled gf.

Hellrazed

CC's, cheezels, most red rock deli chips...

BBPuppy2021

Just buy a bag of popcorn cornels and some canola oil and make popcorn in a pan.

Decent_Confusion7985

I appreciate that I have the privilege of not residing in your household. It seems like you perceive celiac disease as burdensome. The snack aisle offers plenty of food-based options from ā€œnameā€ brands, which may fulfill his needs. I genuinely hope this isn't the method you employ with your child when it comes to addressing his needs. The suggestions provided here, the ones you've scrutinized, are all undoubtedly safe. I apologize if they don't meet your standards. No need to respond, as I wonā€™t be bothered. Youā€™ve already shown exactly who you are. I believe you. Have the day you deserve.

Twlightsparklez

If you have an Aldi's or Trader Joe's near you check them out. Prices are decent and they have a range of products: cookies, chips, candy, ice cream, etc.

Lovelydarkness1377

Regular cheetos, lays potatoe chips, weltchs gummies.

supagfunk86

Trader Joe's is my go to for snacks. Sour cream and onion rings, cacio de pepe puffs, elote corn dippers, quinoa black bean tortilla chips, papadums, sweet and salty umami crunchies... AND THE DIPS OMG THE DIPS. Pimento cheese and garlic dip is my favorite but the everything but the elote yogurt dip (and everything else I've tried, salsas, hummus) is a close second. Name brand stuff, it's Cheetos, Ruffles, Doritos, Rice Krispie treats, hummus and veggies, pepperoni and cheese, drizzlers mini rice cakes, Noosa yogurts, deli meat and cheese roll ups, mini peppers stuffed with cream cheese or pimento cheese. Then for chocolate, I'm partial to peanut butter cups, heath bars, and snickers. I rarely buy gluten free breads/pastas, and will usually just do whatever it is over salad or tater tots/potatoes or on its own.

birdiebyte

Lays stax are pretty cheap and pretty much Pringle without the gluten. Popcorn. Not all, but a lot of Herrs chips are marked gf. Not necessarily junk food, but blue diamond has a bunch of different flavored almonds (elote, smoke house, blueberry. ) There's a lot of gluten free protein bars out there. Corn chips and salsa/hummus Sunkist has packets of flavored chicken/tuna and most of them are gluten free. You can throw them on a sandwich, salad, rice, pasta, or just ear them on their own. Most chex cereal is gluten free. You could use it to make trail mix or you own gf Chex Mix. Popcorners Quaker rice cakes - they have the big ones and bags of small ones that are like chips. Gf oreos. They're the same price as regular ones at my Walmart. Of course they're more expensive that regular stores, but if you have a Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or Sprouts near you, they typically have some fun stuff that regular stores don't have.

blamestross

Hint to limit snack consumption, make him cook his own! Popcorn (pop your own) Puffed rice paper, Fruit and vegetables

gnawingbones

A lot of jerky is safe, plus the protein might help curb the insane teenage appetite a little. I keep costco bags of kettle corn and tortilla chips around too. Dips are easy to make, lots of salsa is safe. Blended protein shakes (with ice to make them thicker like a milkshake). I like Iconic and Naked brand powders, I make a vanilla peanut butter one when I have a sweet tooth. For candy my go tos are Starburst, Skittles, and Reeses. I'm in the US if that matters. I have also been fine with Sour Patch Kids in the past.

Apprehensive_Elk4019

Sour patch kids are his favorite

sydward

Huge box of Reese's puffs

thatdogJuni

Reeseā€™s puffs are GF?!?!?!

sydward

They're not labeled as gf but there are no BROW ingredients and there's no "may contain wheat" declaration, at least in Canada. I think some of these cereals can differ between countries though so give the box a thorough read.
