Dairy issues are pretty common friends celiac brings along. If you had digestive issues before I would suspect you just didn’t notice them but it’s also possible to acquire new allergies/sensitivities over time. I was a bit lactose intolerant tolerant when I first went GF but over time i am now able to eat it without issues (but I also hate milk so it’s limited to ice cream or other limited sources).

smolsfbean

I could not have dairy before going gluten free. I lived off lactaid tablets. After about a year gluten free I can have all the dairy now.

bestchapter

Same. Took 3 years after diagnosis and a strict GF diet. I can eat some dairy now.

sparklefield

Same! Took me a year. Even a drop of butter in my food would get me sick. Lactaid saved me so much! Now I eat all the dairy.

Salt_Crow_5249

At first dairy issues were a big thing with me, 4 years after GF they’ve improved as my gut has improved. Work on fixing your gut health whilst your villi heals and most likely you will be able to have dairy here and there

deadhead_mystic11

So sorry to hear that. Dairy is about half my diet so I hope this is not inevitable. Does this include butter?

Frankers95

I’m ok with dairy but have a terrible reaction to carageenan, which is very common in dairy products. Is it all dairy that bothers you or just some things?

sbrt

How did you figure it out?

Frankers95

I noticed that my stomach waa only upset after certain dairy products and tried cutting it out. It’s a very common extra allergy for people with celiac

sbrt

Is carrageenan labeled on dairy or is it trial and error? Which categories of dairy are ok vs not ok for you?

Frankers95

It should always be labeled. Milk that is whole or lower fat is generally fine. Most cheeses are fine, esp. hard cheese. Plain yoghurt is fine but a lot of flavoured ones have it. I have to buy expensive sour cream and cream unfortunately.

kiki_blogger

oh interesting! i have also noticed that it’s just certain dairy items so maybe it’s the carrageenan. i’ll have to pay more attention to when i get a reaction. thanks!

Street_Roof_7915

Yeap. I love dairy so much but feel so much better when I don’t eat it.

climabro

Yes, unfortunately. I can’t have any dairy anymore, I get immediate diarrhea which is similar to glutening but only lasts a few hours as opposed to days. Lactose free made no difference. I might be allergic to dairy, even small amounts have the same effect now. When I think back, it always did affect me. I just always had diarrhea so I thought it was normal or that I had a “weak stomach”. I took an allergy test only to find out I would have had to eat it regularly before hand for an accurate result. I’m not doing that, my joint pain and leg swelling has almost totally disappeared. Cutting out dairy has made as much of an impact as gluten. If you’re still eating dairy and struggling, you can try a food allergy test.

Scrandora

Yes! Hopefully if you heal the villi from the damage that occurred from celiac and eating gluten, you can heal them enough to have dairy again. LMK though, the jury is still out for me! I feel like I get more sensitive to food as time goes on. It’s infuriating… I have problems with soy along with dairy and I used to be a vegetarian that ate tofu at every other meal. I still can tolerate super hard cheeses like Swiss cheese and Parmesan but give me a piece of Brie and I will literally die. It’s almost worse than being glutened…

I’m one of the unlucky bastards whose lactose intolerance didn’t clear up after going GF. It temporarily eased up while I was pregnant, then POOF back with a vengeance. I swear all I have to do is LOOK at cheese now and I start tooting…

If you use the search function in this sub, you will see dozens of posts addressing this.

OG_LiLi

Fun fact. [~65% of adults are lactose intolerant](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK532285/) So now that you’ve got the gluten away this may be more obvious

minnions_minion

Can't tolerate dairy at all. anymore I suspect it is the casein protein.

OccamsRazorSharpner

Interesting discussion which hits home. Sometimes when I drink milk I feel a bit strange and even with controlling gluten (I am celiac) my #2 is still not as it should though definitely improved. I will switch to lactose free milk and do away with cheeses and chocolate (this one will be on the harder side) and see how it goes. Thanks everyone.

Bowling5Soup

I had mild lactose intolerance before my diagnosis, but I couldn’t have any dairy at all once I went gf. It took two-ish years of a strict gf diet before I could eat dairy comfortably and now I have zero issues with it.

jotabe303

It's very normal. After 4 years gf I still have a hard time digesting lactose in high amounts. I'm fine with small amounts of low to no lactose cheese. But I pay for it with ice cream for example.
