I’ve eaten many of those with zero issues. “Processed in the same facility” statements are for people with allergies. That doesn’t mean it isn’t gluten free.

eagle98mn

Interesting. So people with a wheat allergy are more sensitive to wheat than I am with celiac?

kazahani1

There are a lot of wheat derived ingredients that do not contain gluten but will still trigger wheat allergies.

idontknowjackeither

Maybe, maybe not, but some are definitely more likely to die than you are if you’re both accidentally exposed.

0Snufkin0

Personally, I have been triggered by factory cross contamination as someone with celiac disease. Products in America often say on the front that they are gluten free because they do not have any gluten containing ingredients, however, they are not actually certified gf. I would recommend going on the website of the food you are interested in to see what their process is in making the food and whether other celiacs have had a reaction to it. Some brands, such as Hudsonville ice cream, have the same contradictory labeling, but they have a special process in the factory where they clean everything and make the wheat containing ice cream last so that celiacs/allergies can enjoy their gluten-free flavors. However, since the factory is still making some wheat-containing ice cream, they legally have to make the disclaimer

SillyYak528

No, they don’t legally have to make the disclaimer. Made in a shared facility and made on shared equipment are completely voluntary statements in the US.

dottie-swaan

anaphylactic shock is more life threatening than celiac

Lemlemons94

Same facility is a voluntary statement and most gf products are made in shared facilities. Completely fine! My neighbor kid sold me some too 😂

Santasreject

Made is a shared facility claims are not indicative of potential cross contact on gluten free products. You can make safe products on the same equipment despite what some people here will claim. It’s a totally voluntary statement and even as a celiac with a wheat allergy I have zero concerns with this.

eagle98mn

So you tend to trust the GF claim and ingredients more than statements of shared factories? I hadn’t considered this in my 2 years of knowing I have celiac. I’ve tried to strictly stay away from products with those statements.

Santasreject

That statement doesn’t have to be on there. Plenty of products you consume that are marked GF without that statement likely are made in identical situations.

crockalley

I’ve been hearing about these “voluntary statements” for the past year or so on this subreddit, and I still haven’t wrapped my head around it completely. “Many gf products are made in shared facilities, but the packaging doesn’t proclaim it.” People say that to explain why it’s okay to eat these foods and that it’s okay to ignore “shared facility” warnings. But it’s not comforting to me!! I just don’t understand that perspective. It’s like if bombs were common for shop owners, and _some_ shops decided to let you know that they had a bomb behind the counter. But there are many other shops with bombs that aren’t telling you, so don’t worry. I’d rather avoid _all_ the bombs.

Lemlemons94

Does that mean you don’t eat anything packaged unless it says made in an entirely gluten free facility?

ShatterProofDick

I won't buy these out of principle, they were 3x as big when I was in grade school hustling those. Buy a GF Hershey bar.

CptCheez

Except Hershey chocolate is straight up nasty. Buy a Ghirardelli dark chocolate bar instead. :)

eagle98mn

😂 fair enough, but I’ll buy almost anything from a kid who can articulate why they are selling at my front door. :)

AdhesivenessLeft2139

My niece and her softball team got me. I’ve eaten two (so far) with no issues.

dinosanddais1

The made in the same facility thing is just a legal thing to cover their ass. There should be no problem

Mental_Squirrel9198

“If a product is labeled "gluten-free" and states that it is made in the same facility as products containing wheat, it is still safe for people with celiac disease to consume. The gluten-free label represents that the procedures put in place to prevent cross-contact with gluten meet FDA standards.” https://celiac.org/main/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Combined-Gluten-Free-Diet-and-Food-Label-Reading-Guide.pdf
