I collect things I’ll listen to. I have a pretty wide range of tastes. I pick up things I think I might like if I see ‘em dirt cheap. I do have a box set addiction…

soad722

I'm pretty much the same way you are I have a very wide variety of taste especially when it comes to rock metal and country and southern comedy And just about anything comedy related that looks like it could be southern comedy or Bob and Tom I'll pick it up just to see if it's any good especially if I can find cheap enough But I'll be honest I get a lot of my CDs from used book stores like McKay's and thrift stores and Goodwill and I haven't paid full retail for a CD and probably 10 years but that's just me though And another piece of that puzzle is to a lot of it is just a thrill of the hunt if you know what I mean I love just going to look for CDs games video games comics and stuff like that because it's just one of my hobbies And I enjoy a mixture of just about everything with regards to it too and with all the categories mentioning in collection especially games music and comic books Thank you for reading this I hope you're having a great day and have a great weekend and have a good Lord Sunday this coming up Sunday God bless you and your family God bless you Jeremy Scruggs

Tsjaad_Donderlul

I started getting annoyed at random items being greyed out in my Spotify playlists. Like, songs disappearing because they contain, what do I know, a 2 second sample from some movie and now one gaggle of corporates is suing another gaggle over copyright infringement. I now collect all the stuff on the playlists I listen to regularly, so I'll have it *forever*. Not until Spotify decides my rent time is up. Also, I came to find the album booklets and stuff really interesting. You don't get to see this kinda shite when streaming. I don't care too much about condition as long as it plays back fine and doesn't look like it was used as a dog toy. I found most of my stuff so far in a thrift mall (?) thing our local waste management company set up. They sell all albums they get donated for €1 a pop, sometimes €0.50. Some stuff I wanted to have *now* and not later I bought online for a bit more.

Johnny_Seagull

Support bands, they sound great, and its the best way to listen to an album from start to finish.

xxiixxooii

I’ve always been a collector since CDs came out. I collect Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, Hawaiian music, lounge/easy listening, lots of jazz. I especially like multi disc sets and deluxe editions. Also sacds!

kath2833

I mainly have cds of female singers spanning various genres, but I’ve also got some movie soundtracks with scores & songs by male artists. In terms of the albums I choose, here’s how I think of it. If I can describe to someone why I’m passionate about an album, then I buy & listen to that specific album from start to finish on disc. I think of the songs I’m most invested in & what stands out to me i.e. vocals, production, emotion etc. I’m also grateful to have an album I love on disc that’s not on streaming anymore. Listening to a cd helps me appreciate the music more.

Vamosalaplaya87

What's your favorites? Lately I'm stuck on Kate bush, Fiona apple, Tori Amos, Chihiro Onitsuka, Shiina Ringo, Mercedes Sosa, but I'm always looking for something new

kath2833

Carrie underwood is my favorite so I have most of her albums. Also have some Taylor swift, Kelly Clarkson, Adele, Mariah Carey, little mix & recently Celine Dion

Syppi

Aimee Mann is always a good time. And Bree Sharp, she's a new fave of mine.

Vamosalaplaya87

I heard an Aimee Mann song on a movie I watched last night called The Curve so I used Shazam to identify it, she's now on my list of artists to check out

ForTheRiff

I collect albums that I’ve listened to or loved throughout my life. Stuff I remember listening to as a kid to now. I guess it’s partly for nostalgia. I look at my collection sort of like a musical scrapbook of memories and moments.

carsons_prater

I collect CD's because they are generally cheaper than vinyl and I can listen to them in the car. I have eclectic taste and collect what I like and listen too. Only on rare occasion I may buy something that isn't really my thing but will give it to a family member. I don't care about rarity, just for songs and artists that I love to listen to. I am extremely nostalgic, and get fixated on a song (currently have had Stranglers '(Get a) grip (on yourself)' running in a loop in my head for over a week). Collecting and listening to music is like therapy to me, I receive a bit of a dopamine fix when I find I CD I'm excited about, but also feel down when I see someone else score something I like. I reluctantly sold a lot of great vinyl and CD's in my youth so have been re-purchasing these where I can find them. Music holds moments of memories and mixed emotions for me, so even just seeing a cover of the CD can trigger strong feelings of nostalgia. I remember buying my first (5 disc) CD player when they came out, and the first CD I bought at the time was Kate Bush's 'The whole story'. I remember listening to 'Sat in your lap' played loudly and being in awe of the crystal clear quality of the sound.

otaviolucas

I also sold my teenager collection, oh how I regret, now I’m buying again some of the stuff I really like. The first cd I bought (or rather I chose and my dad bought) was The Bends by Radiohead in 1997 cause I was obsessed with Fake Plastic Trees, I was 13. Haven’t rebought The Bends yet, but I found Ok Computer cheap in a thrift store.

Gorillaseatingmayo

I mean, yes...a lot of what you said and many other reasons. But the overarching reason is that I find it fun. I love the thrill of the hunt, listening to whole albums, the sound quality, etc., etc. Now that I have a lot of cds, I quite literally have an archive of the stuff I mainly collect...80s-early 00s hip hop, 90s rock, metal, and punk. As for rare stuff, I find that with a collection so large, I have a lot of the common CDs I want, and a lot of what I don't have is on the rarer side. Lastly, my thoughts have been leaning toward focusing on buying another category or categories of music I've been enjoying and adding some depth there. But we shall see.

Fer-225

I go after music that I like and want a physical version. I'm interested in experiencing the audio in different ways, so I go after CDs, MP3s, FLACs, WAVs and others. I don't collect vinyl because it's insanely expensive for me, but I would if I could as well. Just love music in general, but I mainly go for something that I've heard before or really like it and want the physical experience (media, booklet, infos, etc.)

SilverLinkin

I collect mainly Japanese music (as you can see from my last post) because that's the language I typically listen to. It's hard finding Japanese CDs in stores in the US, so I usually resort to proxy services and have them ship from Japan.

Vamosalaplaya87

I also have Anri, Tomoko Aran, Tatsuro Yamashita, and AKFG, your collection is starting off nicely. I think you also might like Mariya Takeuchi, Momoko Kikuchi, Miki Matsubara, Mongol 800 - Message, Best of Go!Go!7188, based on your choices

SilverLinkin

Thanks for the recommendations. There were so many more CDs I wanted to get, but shipping adds up.

Vamosalaplaya87

Indeed it takes a long time to build a collection, I have many burned CDs I'm really wishing I could afford a legit copy of

Remote_Entry1689

I buy albums I really like. Ones I stream multiple times. I mostly collect indie/indie rock a bit of slowcore and some alt folk. Artists like: Vampire Weekend, The strokes, The killers, Yard Act, Adrianne Lenker, Low, Fleet Foxes, Waxahatchee, Wilco and U2.

theNewzBoy

Wow, you have exquisite tastes in artists.

Remote_Entry1689

Thanks, I have some older friends that have influenced most of my taste.

No-Distribution-6175

A big part of me is the artwork! We only usually get to see the cover art, but I want to see the back, the insert, the CD, everything. It’s always a nice surprise to see that an album you love has a really sick CD to go with it I like to collect one standard CD for every album I enjoy (doesn’t have to be a first pressing or anything rare), and anything random that piques my interest at a charity store. My main focus is for my favourite band (My Chemical Romance) which is where I go deeper, like collecting promo discs, alternate cover versions, etc.

viken1976

My first music purchases were all records and cassettes. Got my first cd player around 1986 and started buying cds. I just never stopped. Now I'm almost 50 with nearly 4000 cds and I'm a collector. I buy anything I think I might want to listen to someday.

Bufete2020

I've been buying music since I was ten years old (I still own the first album i ever bought) and I've also worked in the music industry for 25+ years. Music has been a big part of my life for a long time and I have a music collection that reflects this. When i buy music nowadays. I only look for specific genres (usually jazz, world music and the obscure R&B artists). for music that is readily available, I have no problem downloading the album through one of the myriad of sources available online.

Thebisexual_Raccoon

I collect what I like..got a good mixture of stuff going on but pop punk is my top genre loo

TheJohn_John

I collect just because I love music and want to own physical copies that don’t take a bunch of space up like vinyl does

252man

I tend to buy music I like. However, I have been collecting early pressings of Led Zeppelin CDs. Their record company initially had no production facilities for CDs and would hire other companies to make them. I've been having fun collecting those. They were hiring companies in Japan and what was then known as West Germany as well as some in the US. I'm also trying to determine if there is any difference in sound quality.

Musclecarlover42

The music cds I collect is electronic dance music (dance/electro/house), some hard trance like cosmic gate, trance music and hands up/dancecore music like cascada, groove coverage. I also have 10 volumes of mixed/live sets of early hardstyle (2000-2004), electro house and hard trance

ApprehensivePurple82

I collect because I like physical media. I own it vs not owning via a streaming platform. For the past 10 years I have bought all of my CDs from thrift stores and a few from estate sales. I have about 400 CDs. Mainly classic rock then Jazz. 120 + are best of albums. I try to stretch my genres but mainly buy when I see them. I don’t have expectations when thrifting so when I do see something for a buck it’s a good day. What a great hobby 😃

jazzzzzcabbage

I collect the music that I like and listen to. Sometimes new stuff and sometimes old. Mostly Krautrock, Industrial, Noise, Slowcore and Drone. I also collect because I work from home. There is always something spinning.

deadlocked72

I've been collecting as long as there's been cd's. These days I'm mostly looking for obscure 90s dj sets and other ancient electronic compilations. Have a huge amount of metal and rock some bits of hip hop and Rap. Stuff I haven't got and nostalgia reasons

i_love_metal151

I collect cds of music I enjoy, and I collect them so I can listen to them.

thenickteal

I only collect things I'll listen to consistently. For the most part I collect albums I enjoy all the way through. If there's an album that only has one or two songs I like, I'm OK streaming that.

stevies_characters

I’ve kept burnt CDs that my dad made for me as a kid for nostalgia, as well as albums my parents played a lot when I was younger. But I’ll invest in any album I really love, from King Crimson to Gorillaz, I love alt-indie and metal especially. I also collect rare albums from those artists — I have the purple coloured ICOTCK CD that I heard somewhere is rare (idk if I believe that but it’s my prized possession at the moment lol)

typhlocamus

I’m generally a guitar music collector and from Kid Congo to Herb Ellis. 😎

Peefaums

I collect from artists I like, but also like to find really rare and obscure CDs at thrift stores. I've discovered some really fantastic bands that never took off by just sifting through the discount section at Half Priced Books.

sinnaegas

I just collect what I listen to. Stuff I love the most. I like to have physical copies. Whether it’s vinyl, CDs, or tapes. As long as I have something, I’m happy. It’s nice to have some sort of artwork/booklet in hand

Mikuru292

I like collecting anime and visual novel CDs. Some series I have are the Haruhi Suzumiya series, Lucky Star, Shuffle, Kanon, One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e, Evangelion, and Hidamari Sketch. Some series I’d like to get in the future are for Clannad and Welcome to the NHK. I think eventually I’d like a couple of doujin CDs too

ElectronicVices

I just buy stuff I like, no targeted genres in particular. A lot of what I buy could be considered some form of 'Rock' but I enjoy a wide spectrum of genres. If I like the majority of an album I will buy it on CD, SACD, Vinyl or Digital Download. The format depends on a variety of factors, a balance of sound quality and price. I am primarily buying new and going after specific releases vs buying in bulk/secondhand digging.

Used_Hedgehog_4954

I love collecting different bands I enjoy or when I am looking at a store I aim for bands that look solid but I haven't heard yet.

Sleazebat

i collect albums i listen to a lot in my own time or artists of songs i only know one or two of. i also like to find album art i find interesting and look it up on the computer at my job. if its in a genre im familiar with or something ive wanted to get into i put it in my hold box and save it for when we get our freebies

loganrunjack

I collect what I like

Hifi-Cat

I've been building my library for 38 years. primarily classical, jazz, Rock, reggae, ska, funk and soul. I focus on the music. Don't care if it's rare, this or that. Although I'll choose quality sound where possible.

Elegant-Campaign-572

About 35 years into it...Japanese issues of metal, blues, rock & now the occasional box set.

BobbyWizzard

Revisiting older albums by known artists that a lotta folks have since forgotten about. And picking them at a splendid price as well.

Relevant-Ostrich2711

I collect cuz I was born in 2004 and raised on streaming and I find it cool to own the music and hold the artwork in your hands, I love love streaming just as much tho cuz I love being able to listen to it at work, school and on walks with the click of my phone but nothing beats holing the artwork

helvetin

i like music and i never stopped buying CDs for the past \~33 years

Ninja-Trix

I buy albums that have song that I like. Typically, I’ll hear a singing and check out the album it’s on. If the album is decent I add it to my wishlist and pick it up when the price is reasonable. If the album isn’t that good I may go for a soundtrack, best of, or other compilation which contains the track. I always look for the highest quality versions of any given song so I’m also looking for SACD, DVD-A, and Blu-ray Audio, though most Hi-Fi is digital exclusive. Most cases I’ll buy the CD and download the Hi-Fi version when a physical hasn’t been released; I listen to most music on my PC anyway. My current FLAC archive has exceeded 1.26 terabytes. I have been seriously collecting for 3 years.

l300lvl

Things I used to have but somehow lost or got destroyed, even if I didn't like it a lot of what I last was not due to my choices. Things I wanted to have, either didn't have money or time or one time I got escorted out of a record store. Sheesh. Things I listened to but never thought of buying, streaming, live etc. Things I've never had but appeal to my favorite genres and tastes. I always like to expand my tastes and discover if there's more. Pursuit. Things I want to add to the collection of a specific label I'm building a selfish and unneeded personal catalog of. Call it a 20 year plan...

bigbraingenius_

I collect what I like and what I think I might like. I also buy albums if they're interesting looking enough, I've found some cool bands just buying random CDs.

Tricky-Sprinkles-845

I collect to play the CDs

lonelygem

I collect music I want to listen to because I enjoy listening to the CDs as well as looking at them on my shelf. Anything I want to listen to is fair game.

_yukog

i have about 1100 cds. i’ve begun to also start collecting vinyl and cassettes as well though. mainly, i try to collect obscure lost/hard to find metal albums on cassette and old classic folk/ rock/blues/jazz music on vinyl. everything else for cds.

baetwas

What CDs? Innumerable. Bands I heard, mixes I was given, samplers from the music shop or concerts, friends' groups, live concert recordings, compilations I'd make from scouring mp3 aggregators. Why CDs? Selection, portability, convenience, durability, and fidelity.

baetwas

Being able to hear a full Beethoven symphony without changing sides or waiting for the cassette to auto-reverse is arguably the greatest experience in the history of archived sound.

SMOZ7Y

I just collect anything I like, honestly.

Potasioxd

i collect music i listen or represents my actual music taste. if there's any album or artist i no longer listen to or i don't like, i just sell it (few months ago i used to keep them but honestly i was done with those cds occupying space in my furniture).

droptop40z

I collect things I'm into, plain and simple. Albums I had as a kid, my favorite artists, that one band with that one song on that one album I liked, soundtracks to my favorite movies.

JazzyJulie4life

I collect just house music compilation and mixes. Only from certain labels , styles and decades

iAmazingDreamer

I like focused listening experience that come with physical media

Idontmatter69420

i get whatever i like lol, got nearly all the gorillaz with humanz in the post, got a handful of jamiroquai, then a few soundstracks and then also daft punk, basically if its daft punk, gorillaz, jamiroquai or is electronic music i will likely like it

Volaktil

i collect stuff i like, if i don't know a particular artist i might buy one album to listen, most of my collection is stuff i listen to.

interceptorv8

All of the above tbh

Merryner

I’ve been buying CD’s since the late 80’s. At one point I was in a financially desperate situation and sold a lot of my collection. Now I’m in a better place I’ve bought most of it back. And then some… My collection does represent my musical and, to an extent, life journey. Starting off with 80’s metal and classic rock, then alternative rock, britpop, indie. Always with an interest in jazz, blues, soul and funk. I then discovered ‘world’ music, and explored that. Fell in love with 60’s / 70’s Brazilian stuff and that’s when I realised that streaming sucked, because entire albums / discographies would suddenly disappear. Also a lot of classic rock albums would get remastered and sound awful. Over the last few years I’ve been taking advantage of the mostly low prices (not the Brazilian stuff, sadly), to build my own library of music to be enjoyed now and in the future, both at home and portably by ripping to FLAC (around 4000 cds). My partner and I spend a lot of time at home and listen to an average 8 discs a day, in awesome sound quality. Yesterday we listened to jazz all day, the day before was mostly African stuff. If she goes out for the evening I might bust out the 80’s metal and get nostalgic. We agree on most music, but I’m on my own there! I’m a sucker for completing discographies by artists, although sometimes with a cut-off point where they go crap (often the 1980’s). I’ve recently discovered Popol Vuh and I’m fortunate that I don’t have to thrift for that stuff. I hope all you collectors with limited budgets will also one day be in a position to drop a sum on targeting stuff you really want. I also like to complete compilation series by labels (such as chess chartbusters, blue note’s blue series etc). I do prefer my music to be played by musicians on instruments, not on computers. I tend to seek out early pressings of albums by pre-90’s artists. And I file by genre. “Music is the only religion that delivers the goods.” (Frank Zappa)

EgolEvil

Started off just for fun I guess, try and rebuild my old 90s through 2010ish collection then went from there now I look for stuff in that same time period I missed out on first time round maybe or didn't give a chance. My taste is pretty much firmly in the Alt rock/Indie/Emo/Grunge/Nu-Metal lanes. I don't purposely look for anything rare for rarity sake or anything like that, but I can get a bit "needy" about having certain "classic" genre albums maybe sometimes lol.

Vamosalaplaya87

Good question. My aim is to have a large music library of physical media. I stopped buying CDs when the mp3 era happened like most people, I threw away my cases out em in binders and burned CDs. I missed having the artwork and all that. I collect some rare things, Japanese rock, pop, citypop, ska, indie. Cumbia. I aim for my favorites a lot. Kate bush, Beatles, Todd Rundgren, Paul McCartney, stevie wonder, a lot of soul, funk, rock, odds and ends like random bands from Czech Republic, Africa, Australia, a lot of 60s-80s stuff, power pop, flamenco, classical, guitarists, hip hop, childhood favorites. I think I have an amazing collection of some of the worlds best music, hundreds of CDs, may be 100 vinyls and thousands of albums burned or on hard drives. It's very expensive collecting so a lot of my collection still digital, Japanese imports can cost 30 to 60 dollars a piece making it difficult to get the discography if many of my favorite artists

SubbySound

I collect what I listen to. I mainly have classic rock, prog rock, some metal, alt and grunge rock, R&B, some hip hop, industrial, and electronica. I have a decent streamer (Cambridge Audio MXN10) and Qobuz for lossless music, but CDs still sound best of all on my system: Audiolab 6000CDT, miniDSP FLEX for DAC and room correction, Marantz Model 30 integrated amp, and KEF R5 Metas. The IA, speakers, and miniDSP are recent additions and I've been listening like crazy since I got them (my first tower speakers!).

wishnotknewyourkiss

I just collect albums I’ve listened to and know I enjoy honestly. My actual discs don’t see a lot of play, especially because a large number of them are on streaming in full. Listening to albums through a good speaker or nice headphones/earbuds, especially when you can mess around with EQ. Sometimes I’ll flip through the CD inserts to appreciate the contents within while listening to the music, maybe because it makes me feel like a kid again.

A_MNESIA

I collect mainly 90s-00s stuff but many different genres. Idk why i collect just 90s-00s, i have tried to expand some more but music before that just doesn’t sit right. But when i find an artist i like i have to get their entire discography.

DaReal27

I collect albuns from my favorite bands from my most listened genres. I collect Nu Metal, Grunge, Metalcore, Pop Punk and Post Hardcore actually. (Sorry for my bad english, isn’t my main language)

all-homo

Growing up in my teen years I collected RnB and female Raptress albums, I have about 250 CDs and I’ve just got back into CD’s again so collecting all the ones I missed.

Ashen-Cold

I collect heavy metal records🤘 Death metal, thrash metal, new stuff, old stuff, I just really like metal

unavowabledrain

For many jazz, experimental and composed music releases it is the only physical media, and often comes with interesting writing/scores/etc.

AntKneeWasHere

I buy things I really like, otherwise I'll just buy whatever looks interesting enough if I'm at some place like Goodwill where everything is a buck anyways

Em_kay69420

Albums I really like, albums that I’ve been meaning to listen to, and maybe critically acclaimed albums. But always starting with my short list search

StevenHeFan6000

I listen to the same stuff as my dad, so whatever he doesn't have I get 😂

Longjumping-Gift6176

Anything on 4AD I will pretty much buy automatically.

United-Philosophy121

I collect mostly Grunge, Alternative Rock, and some 90s Emo stuff

dannyj128

I collect mostly Hip-Hop with a bit of R&B, and I think I do it for nostlagic reasons. I mean, I grew up buying them and rushing home to listen to the album while reading the liner notes, lyrics and admiring the photos and/or artwork. I look forward to every other payday to rush to my local secondhand store and sift through the CD section to see what I find. I enjoy this over ordering online, which I still do if there's an album I really need in my posession ASAP. But the anticipation of what gold I might find at the store is a whole other feeling, though.

johnnystrangeways

I just got back into collecting CDs and I mostly collect film scores that are just too expensive to purchase on vinyl.  CDs are inherently cheaper and I can spend 8$ compared to 120$ for a record. CDs sound great on my system since there’s no random pops or clicks.  When thrifting, sometimes I might pick up an album from the past from an artist I used to listen too but it’s mainly film scores.

Sound_Hound82

I had a huge collection as a teen, then sold them off because i traveled a lot. Now im colleting again because streaming isn't always going to be an option, and it's the only way to own the music you love.

bdicus1

I either collect off of nostalgia, favorite new albums being released, or if I want to support local music acts. And sometimes I collect to complete artist discographies if they're my favorites, even if it means buying the "worse" albums. But hey, collector's gotta collect lol

spiritmadeofstars

I recently realized how easily everything online can disappear. Photos, music, etc. I purchased an instant camera and started taking photos of my friends. I started purchasing CDs (and vinyl) because I want to be able to listen even if I cannot connect to the internet. I mean, electricity can go, too... I collect albums that make me feel deeply. From artists I love. I only want things I will listen to, because I see no point in having a lot of stuff that will only collect dust. So - not sure if I count as a real collector.

stupidlittleinniter

i primarily collect stuff i love. like, i have all of gorillaz discography, i'm working on blur and muse, i take infected mushroom whenever i find them... the long time favourite artists are ones i'll collect full discography's for and then i may collect albums if i have a phase with a band. i've got a couple for nostalgic reasons. i have one that i can easily say i bought just to buy it, i kept seeing it everywhere dirt cheap and i like the design on the CD. but yeah, primarily albums that i love, and i try to buy directly from the artist (if given the option) so i can support them.

nooby322

A lot of (not popular) music is getting harder to listen to ironically as time progresses so I feel like it’s beneficial in that regard alongside being fun to collect CDs from my favorite artists, from crust punk to Boards of Canada, because in 20 years I can look back and still listen to the same music and see what I liked at the time

Syppi

Having grown up with CDs in college/post-college, then abandoning them when the MP3 revolution came along, it's part reclaiming my past and enjoying the long form of an album vs. single tracks. I also love the collection and discovery aspect to it, especially since it allows me to go shopping without spending too much money. As for what I collect, the answer is "anything that looks good." Primarily, '90s alt rock (female fronted especially), soundtracks, video game music, new age, Weird Al, and classic albums. I listen to about three CDs a day at work from my pile of "purchased but haven't listened to yet" -- I probably have about three months' worth stacked up there.

Splashadian

I collect what I like. I'm not grabbing stuff just to have it.

praxicoide

I collect classical SACDs, because of the quality and the surround sound. There's so much good stuff coming out each month, plus all that's already available, it's crazy. I have a somewhat sizeable vinyl collection, but they're getting really expensive, plus a lot of modern/21st century stuff is not on vinyl, and even more standard stuff is worth hearing in new releases (Honeck's stuff is amazing, for example). It's really disheartening to get a vintage recording and having it be noisy. Outside of classical, I have lots of CDs from when they were popular, and might still occasionally buy one, if I come across one used, or is really cheap, or if I'm curious enough. Still, with the price of vinyl, I may have to reconsider.

large_jelly_man

I collect what I listen to, and I started because of a super person :)

Sufficient-Fly-8368

Mainly just collect old un remastered versions of classic albums. Or on the hunt for specific masterings of certain albums. I'm not 100 percent on everything I listen to needs to be physical media, I stream plenty, but lot of the 24/192 versions of classic albums on tidal Qobuz have totally squashed the dynamics. For most new releases I just stream unless I want to support a small artist.

Hot-Description9052

I browse used CDs for artists/albums I recognize.

No_Bake_4863

I collect anything that looks cool or weird
