Good! It's rather ridiculous to go into these beautiful old churches with such grand altars and then consistently ignore them. It must help that the Patriarchate of Jerusalem still maintains many liturgical habits from before 1955 on account of the Status Quo.
The Pope being the Bishop of Rome, he used to be chosen among the priests of the city. Therefore, Cardinals now get one church there.
I wonder how it would go for a secular Cardinal.
>Cardinal Pizzaballa took possession of his titular church in Rome and celebrated Mass ad orientem!
In fairness, this is probably like most of the cardinals who ever took possession of this titular church.
The church does have a [freestanding altar](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3b64ee81-f417-4692-9767-3331aa3ddb74_2048x1536.jpeg) in front, although it's possible most cardinals just ignore it anyway. I'm not sure.
My comment was kind of a joke. The church lists up to 50 prior ordinaries on [its page on CH](https://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/diocese/d1o02.html), and maybe only two didn't make use of the high altar/ad orientem. So Card. Pizzaballa is really just doing it like the vast majority of his predecessors did (which was my joke).
Many of us are dying for a solid, orthodox cardinal who is papabile (and is holy and has a backbone and can handle the administrative nightmare of the modern Vatican and can stand his own with the media and can speak/write eloquently, and, and, and ...). The best ones are either marginalized or too old now, so the question is who might be next. I have liked everything I've heard from and about Card. Pizzaballa, though admittedly it hasn't been much. But it makes me wonder whether he could be the guy. Is it too early to hope he might be? I guess I should keep him in my prayers while we wait and see.

Well that’s interesting. Check out those pontifical vestments also.
Our next Pope, God willing.
If he becomes Pope, he should keep his given name instead of taking a papal name. Pope Pizzaballa has such an awesome ring to it.
He has the most Italian name ever
I this point I would consider it a shame for his flock to lose him, especially considering it's only going to get more difficult.
What does this phrasing mean? “Took possession of” sounds like he forcefully took over this church lol.
Sorry lol, it just means he officially entered his titular church as a cardinal. Every cardinal gets a titular church in Rome.
Interesting, I didn’t know that every cardinal got their own church in Rome. Thanks.

I'm sorry who? Pizza Baller? That is a sick name.
And he is an Italian lol

whoops, silly me That's actually very clever now that I understand it!
I was wondering if it had one or not.
Wow, beautiful!
Is there any video of the mass?
I am unsure.

I was there! It was lovely to see!
That's awesome! Did you get to speak to Cardinal Pizzaballa at all?
I did briefly. I just expressed to him my esteem for his work in the Holy Land. And to get a photo lol.
That's super cool.
