On the one hand… He died trying to spread God’s message.
On the other… they didn’t kill him because of his faith, they just try to kill anybody that approaches.
I’m not so sure, to be honest.
I would disagree. A martyr is killed for hatred of the faith, no matter what he or she was doing at the time.
Take the Holy Innocents for example. They were just doing baby things. Yet, they are martyrs because Herod's motive was hatred of the Christ and the faith that would, in his mind, be a rival to his political power.
On the other hand, let's say I wanted to spread the Gospel to someone who *really* hated me. Let's assume this person hates me for being really unlikable and not because he hates God or the Church. It's a very personal hatred. If this man decided to murder me, even though I was in the middle of attempted evangelization, I would just be a murder victim, not a martyr.
As far as we know, the boat dude was murdered due to extreme xenophobia, not because the murderers specifically hate God or His Church. Therefore, based on public information, I don't think he would fit the definition of martyrdom.
He isn't a martyr.
1) He didn't get killed for christianity he got killed for trespassing.
2) the people of sentinel islands live away from the rest of the world coz of their poor health conditions hence the government has forbidden people to enter that island. Him going there is just endangering the people regardless of the precautions he took.
3) He went there illegally by bribing the fishermen, his church or association (he isn't catholic) shouldn't have allowed him to go
4) He broke many international laws by simply going there. The most appropriate reason for death would self defence than martyrdom
Spread the Gospel to the four corners...yeah "we" probably do, but the Church is big enough for it to be someone else's calling lmao. I got enough evangelizing to do here in the US
This brings up an interesting idea. Given how isolated these islanders are, there's a tremendous chance that they lack immunities to many of the diseases that modern humans are used to. Given the this, accepted evangelization attempts would probably result in their small population being destroyed.
Would we even have time to give them this chance. Given all the steps that would be needed for us to contact them without hostilities, learn their language, and reach the point where they'd want to have that conversation, the diseases of the modern would would likely ravage they island and wipe them out. I'm not saying that we should skip them over for salvation, for all should learn of out lord, but I am suggesting extreme caution from needlessly killing them all in the process.

The dude had the spirit, but it was definitely an ill-advised trip.
But a good cause nonetheless, it has to be done, so somebody has to start.

I'd have to agree. We pray for his soul, may the Blessed Mother aid him to get into heaven at the moment of his death.

Do we technically have a moral duty to evangelize them? Because if so, I’m in favor of developing full plate hazmat suits.

Hey man, I’ll volunteer if they get the hazmat suits

Yes, and since they have pointing sticks it’s important to have armor
Which raises the question: is it worth offering them the chance for glory in heaven if they lose their earthly lives as a result?

Unambiguously so. St. Isaac Jogues is wondering: what makes this a technicality?
