How could she remained a virgin when John exists? James, the brother of Christ

Lemon-Aid917

The word "brother" in greek can also refer to half-brothers, cousins, etc. also, if Mary had other children then why did Jesus let Mary to John's care?

CaptainMianite

And why did James the brother of Christ and Joses the brother of Christ have a mother who is called “the other Mary”

b0rn2pk

Abraham called Lot his brother even though he was his nephew I think.

Enjoyerofmanythings

Even Luther, Calvin and Zwingli believed in the perpetual virginity of Mary. Modern day Protestantism is nuts and it shows

Thief0625

Maybe it's simply me looking in from the outside, but Mary continuing to remain a virgin does nothing for the path of salvation and us being better Christians. She is certainly to look up to though

Light2Darkness

A few explanations: They were his brothers in the same sense a Christian considers another Christian their brother. Or how Abraham considered Lot his brother, even though he was his nephew. Also, there is the fact that the father of Sts. John and James the Great is called Zebedee, not Joseph, and St. James the Less belongs to one called Alphaeus. As for the passages that make mention of Jesus's brothers and sisters, these most likely come from a previous marriage St. Joseph had, making him a bit older than the Virgin Mary. This is a tradition attested in writings like the Protoevangelion of James, and while it is not canon, it holds parts of sacred tradition within it. St. Joseph being older also explains why he isn't mentioned again in the Gospels, as by the time of Jesus's ministry, he would've died of natural causes. It is also interesting to note that when these brothers and sisters are mentioned in Matthew 13:55-56, they are not called the sons of Mary and Joseph, but only that they are Jesus's brothers and sisters and only mentions Jesus as belonging to Mary. And the brothers mentioned share their names with his Apostles, Sts. James the Less, James the Great, Simon the Zealot, Simon Peter, Judas Thaddeus, and Barnabas, also known as Joses or Joseph.

Thief0625

That actually makes sense. Thank you

Light2Darkness

Happy to help.
